I think the best thing I took from the movie Arjun Reddy is the climax, when arjun says to preethi "even if the child is not ours tell her that I am her father." I wont be hitting a women I love even if it is shown in a 100 movies. It is upto the people to choose their takeaways from the movies. Movies influence people. But it is upto the people to get influenced right. I may be a sort of guy who could love a girl to an extent of harming myself. But that doesn't make me say that Arjun Reddy inspired me to be one. At the most I will be feeling like, " there is some guy who likes to love a girl to such an extent, I thought I would". That is it. People should be mature enough to segregate milk and poison. View Arjun Reddy as a film of 2 flawed characters, who love each other despite their flaws. That is it. There are films in which a women is portrayed as an item dancer or stuffs like that . Those are the movies which should be debated.

Bingo!! I was about to reply the same. Today, girls are being attacked, disrespected and judged. But , Arjun Reddy - just loved her and did not mind about the child. He also says ,” it’s just blood and flesh “ wow ! He is a true man...
also, Arjun, stands for his values. We also have a scene where Arjun was banned from the medical practice due to his alcoholism. His father / brother were with him and just a bunch of lies would let him continue his practice. He denies and stood up for what he believed. That’s what Arjun Reddy for me.

I don't think he actually understands the criticism that is coming his (or the film's) way. There is a difference between saying 1."these 2 people are abusive to each other BUT they also love each other" and 2."these 2 people are abusive to each other BECAUSE they love each other". In the first statement you are drawing a distinction between love and abuse while still recognizing that they can both exist in a relationship (although we can argue about what kind of love you have if you don't have respect but that's another story). In the second statement you are making love conditional on abuse (or the right to abuse). You are saying if I love you then I also have the right to abuse you (or that abuse isn't really abuse if I love you). Arjun Reddy the film and the director of the film don't seem to understand this distinction. I think that's the main issue here. I don't think most people who are criticizing this film want every relationship in the world to be exactly the same.
Also, just because a lot of women love something doesn't make that thing OK. We all grow up in a society that normalizes abuse, especially abuse from men to women. So everyone internalizes this including women. Those who are more aware of the issue and how it affects society are a little more critical when they this playing out either in real life or on screen. It seems like Vijay needs to become more aware of social issues and how they affect people outside his own life. But I understand that's really difficult to do especially when the criticism is so personal. I think given some time he'll be able to step back and view the film and the issues surrounding it a little more objectively and decipher the valid criticism from the noise.
    Sorry for the essay lol

It is wrong if they say 'if you are in love you must be abusive' (which the director kind of implied in the interview). The point is VD didn't get it. His point of view is you could expect them to be abusive if they are in love.

I also want to add that there are so many kinds of movies, shows, series that are available on all OTT platforms which are more hard hitting than Arjun Reddy movie. For me, living in the US with an 8 year old child who goes to school, it is a movie like Joker that would bother me. Here, as you all know, shocking incidents happen in schools where one of the kid in that school decides to go on a rampage. As a woman who grew up in the 80's in India, I do understand how women get treated in a relationship. Some relationships can be really bad, not only in terms of physical abuse, but mental manipulation as well.
So, the place, society and the current situation who grow up influences a lot of our understanding. When someone says Joker was okay, but I felt Arjun Reddy was bad because he slapped the girl, I feel like it is more of the society that influences the way we see things. For me, Joker was a scary movie and I don't want my child who is so much into comics and superhero movies to watch that movie.
It is also upto the adults to decide what you want to watch or not. I have seen some web series that have been created by well-known movie makers in India and I feel terrible about how these shows find air time. Using cuss words in every sentence is also bad. All cuss words in Indian language are centered around women.
I saw Student of the Year 2 on TV and was shocked to see that the actress'es father decides to slap her in front of the school Principal and another student. Is that justified. Don't you think a girl's mental attitude and thought process is influenced by the atmosphere at home too.
Finally, I don't really think only movies influence people to make certain choices, here maybe bad, unless their own mentality matches with that. If we are saying it influences people then the problem is somewhere else. We need a good family, society and education system that prepares strong willed people.

    • @arthurmorgan8765

Joker doesn’t glorify turning into a psycho and murdering people. It is clear throughout the film that the leading man is insane and making the wrong choices, so I don’t understand how anyone sane can walk away from that movie and start thinking it’s ok to act like Joker.

  • @purpleus5

Being a feminist from the bottom of my heart , I watched Arjun Reddy eagerly expecting to see some misogyny. But honestly I was quite taken aback because the problem isn't misogyny at all, but of ego and anger issues. If you observe closely you'll see his anger makes him ill treat and disrespect his friends, family and ofcourse Priti. There's nothing exclusively misogynistic or male chauvinistic in it. Also the 'fat chick' dialogue is more of fat shaming than disrespecting women!
Basically to all my feminist friends out there, yes we need to strongly oppose misogyny but don't try so hard that you start seeing it in places where it isn't really the case!

Poojitha Dandamudi You haven’t thought this through at all. Maybe you haven’t watched enough movies, or maybe you don’t realise cinema doesn’t have the power to change the society ‘for better’. For instance, Andhadhun showcased killing, and deception as normal and ‘some’ people in the theatre were laughing when tabu kills old lady (neighbour) and movie Joker was seen him killing others obnoxiously and everyone was wearing mask in the last scene of movie and audience rooted in theatre for that. If someone is stupid enough to get influenced negatively, the recent example of Priyanka reddy is enough to say the victims will face their fate in reality. There will be consequences for the cruelty in real life; if someone thinks a character in the movie got away from crime doesn’t mean the person will have the same fate if approached in real. Thank you 🙏🏻

Normalizing/glorifying misogyny on screen is very different from simply showing misogyny on screen. He just doesn't get it. Also, clearly, he seems to have prepped for the interview and was clearly taken aback when BR asked about the 'fat chick' comment. The point is not just that he called a female 'fat', it is the context in which he said it and the way he did. There was no scene in the movie which indicated that he was a nutcase, everyone just accepted it. The portrayal was as though it is completely normal to be the way that he was.

@@rameshlovemaryarivalanpott8290 It wasn't the movie as a whole as it was some of the scenes and how the movie treated its protagonist. If the movie had at any point recognized that what Arjun Reddy was doing was wrong, then so many people wouldn't have had a problem with it. The scene where he held a girl at knife point forcing her to have sex with him is basically rape, and it is being glorified. There's no regret about what he does, and the movie accompanies some scenes like this with heroic background music. You might argue that scenes like this won't actually influence people, but sorry, there are very impressionable youth in India. VJD shouldn't see this as a personal insult or targetting of him, he should see this as people calling out the portrayal of his character and how he and Vanga are defending him. He should take social responsibility and just come out and say that Arjun Reddy is a flawed character and that he wouldn't want people to be influenced by him instead of being blind to the fact that people do get influenced by him.

@@sanjitharajesh8436 OK you're making three arguments here and I'll address them one by one.
      1) The way in which the film treated the women:
Ok I've heard this one often. But why is the focus only on women. A person doesn't become misogynistic just because he hits women. However he is misogynistic is he hits ONLY women. But it's relevant throughout the film that he hits both men and women. He is not an asshole just to women he is an asshole to his friends his father his dean his professor all of whom are male. So how can you say that he is misogynistic. He is an asshole to both men AND women.
      2)Glorification of Toxic Masculinity :
You can argue that the film glorified toxic masculinity. But that is only true if you consider candor a masculine trait. By saying that aren't YOU implying that women can't exhibit candor and being a sexist YOURSELF?
      3)The accessibility argument:
You are acting like VJD didnt accept that AR is a flawed character. This is a brazen lie. There is an entire video in which he discusses about this and guess what the video is named? "VJD says that AR is a flawed character"
On a side note why does every actor have to be socially responsible with their craft? Art should not be suppressed. That is the first step towards fascism.
And the knife point rape scene that you mentioned. You do realize that he feels ashamed to have even thought about it that he abruptly exits her house right? How can you argue that he feels no remorse whenever he does anything bad and at the same time ignore the exact moment in which he felt remorse and in fact disgust at himself?

This was what I tweeted some days back. To understand misogyny for anyone who has had the "normal" upbringing in India is very difficult, as in our country, patriarchy is internalised.
To be honest, I was also one among them. I was a rebel questioning the discrimination, but never got an opportunity to comprehend the roots of it.

Vijay Sir's interviews are very raw and honest coming from a good place but there's this point that physical abuse , no matter what you are physiologically, weak or strong is wrong. If in a relationship, be it parental , romantic or mentor-student, there is physical or emotional abuse, it will negatively affect their perspective of the world. Management of behaviors could be done in a non-violent way and just because we are not aware of it does not mean it is not there. Educating yourself with it is the key. Arjun Reddy is in the grey area like how Vijay sir mentioned and it's a story so let's just keep it that way and put an end to this conversation once and for all.

He says if movies influence people then people would have got inspired and been toppers and surgeons etc after seeing his movie. What he doesn't undersatnd is becoming a surgeon and a topper is tough. Harassing people and bullying is not. He says movies only influence people only at a later stage of life and people form their understanding in their formative years. All that might be true but these movie stars, directors and influencers should understand that our cinema is the reflection of our society. It would have been perfectly normal a few years ago if women were ordered around and treated as secondary characters in movies just as the hero's love interest, someone who is meant to be saved from the villain. Then situation changed and women were given more importance in society and this change reflected in our movies. People watching them are definitely going to be influenced. They might not imitate these characters. Young kids will watch these movies and think this is how we are supposed to behave with people we claim to love.

If a 3-hour movie can influence people then those people have no CHARACTER for themselves, they are just empty vessels ready to be filled up with anything.
Movies COULD influence people if your core is already rotten (i mean only about negative things), if not movies you find inspiration elsewhere. A movie could serve has an IDEA ONLY if you already have an INTENTION regarding something, otherwise, it will be just entertainment.

All I can say is the world is fucked up right now, people find problems over everything you know. We live in a society where defaming others is making people happy. People are running behind spreading hatred and only negativity. None is appreciating talents here. Social media world is seducing us in a wrong way. It's so hard to be ourselves here.
