When I traveled the world in the Navy I always took pride as an acting ambassador. I left 90% of social media in 2016 when I came to the conclusion is wasn’t social but actually the opposite
I agree with your opening point. Of the thousands that love watching your channel, my guess is that 30% have never been on a boat, 60% are local day sailors, 3% are cruising the world, and .05% may end up at some of your spots over the next 10 years. It's great. And besides, the kind of people that end up going to the remote tourist spots via your channel are going to be sensitive and respectful to the places they go.
I hope so, David. It takes an effort to get here so you're already mindful of the delicate infrastructure, the nature, the different culture. That said, there'll always be idiots, even on sail boats 😁
Thank you for the many descriptions of the places of interest at the ports and anchorages that you have visited in Indonesia. I'm a solo sailor currently at Pangkor, Malaysia. I intend to sail West to East through Indonesia during January-March 2024. Australia is my final destination. Your vlogs have been most enjoyable and extremely helpful with my own passage planning. Love Esper's ketch rig.
You did a great job on the video. I almost feel can’t say that after you mention me at end of video but I appreciate the video. Thanks for great content.
170th subscriber LIKE; 1,598th desktop-traveler view: which is my first reply to the title and content of this episode - I particularly tune in for the footage (drone is best) of the remote areas you go, where I'll never otherwise see. 2nd - you both speak clearly & succinctly enough that I can watch much of the dialog portion at 1.75 TH-cam speed-up option, and not miss anything. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Cheers.
I wonder if some of these influencer's that go look where I am swinging the camera about whilst still keeping themselves in the frame, walk about off camera whilst carrying a vanity mirror out in front of them ?
Check out Joeybtoonz, linked in the comments. He does a video of clips of people practising their poses in secret (in public). They are unaware they are being filmed, which makes it all the more ironic.
@@followtheboat I've seen many of these on Twitter in their original format, weirdo's and nutters are what's making our society a crazy world, guess the latest craze not entered his video editing yet, and thats two err masked turds entering random homes and being confrontational with the home owners, or walking up to random people saying you want to die, it's getting sick out there and will only end badly for some.
Most sailors and some other tourists are sensitive, responsible, respectful to other cultures and avoid negatively impacting wildlife and nature. But the vast majority of tourists are not, that's why I'm in favour of not disclosing locations which are still virgin!
It's a fair point. Many of the locations we explore are difficult to get to anyway so only the most adventurous would get there. Hopefully the effort required to get there will be a reminder for them to treat it with respect.
@@followtheboat However, some see sailing easy & safe, due to the lifestyle portrayed by most sailing channels. With result of unsafe nil experience, similar dis-respect they have for their homeland, Indigenous. I went Blue water to get away from RV riff-raff, now there out here.
Clap Clap from 42:15. Doesn't matter if u promote or not, others will, therefor others will follow, incl those who'd normally RV, see a sailing channel, believe it's just as easy/safe, some care little about local culture, environment. Local government attempt to deter riff-raff via increase pricing, = the good cruisers, & local retailers, punished due to the bad.
Liz here (belatedly!) Had to find out what is at 42:15 - ah yes, my rant. You can tell how much touching wildlife and cultural sights winds me up. Haha! It started when I watched idiots climbing on Rodin's statue in Paris to get a photo of themselves with "The Thinker" (this was before selfies). Then when I returned to India to find much of the Agra Fort roped off because too many tourists had defaced the walls of Shah Jahan's place of incarceration. Then a yachtie chasing and terrorising a blue-spotted stingray in the shallows just to see if he could touch it. Tosser. Liz
you-tubers don't put a gun to heads, but make the lifestyle look very attractive. Just start a sailing channel & viewers will fund me sailing my family around the world, even tho I've never sailed a day in my life
@@followtheboat Yep, seeing a lot of new channels lately openly admitting it though, even with a loan, comparing it to RV, just work while travelling, etc. They film themselves dragging anchor, bouncing off other property, perhaps thinking it gets increased views. Others having to rescue them. Plus the negs mentioned in this vid.
Stop at about 23.00, You really have made a good point, Liz, with the maybe weird but true comparison to Cornwall! When a place becomes popular with tourists, the local folk, who might then have a 'wonderful chance of having different (underpaid) employment' within (serving) the tourist industry, only to have to come to terms with the fact that they can't afford to live there anymore, as, in the case of an island, surely prices would rocket for land, people would sell and move away, or just become engulfed in the tourist industry! If handled very carefully and responsibly, an enviromently/ eco-friendly type of tourism could maybe be carefully introduced, with benefits for the islanders without any negative 'side effects'!😊 All love and best wishes to you both, Claire, Tommi the rescue dog, and now Amber the rescue cat! Your new 'Sofa Crew'😂❤
Most people who live on these islands don't own property, so have nothing to sell, I'm afraid. We're talking about a pretty basic life here. Hope you're doing well! Liz 🙏
Liz, I love your rants and how Jamie circles the wagons back around. You and I are like minded and see eye to eye on many subjects. Influencers are the reason I don't click. I'm not interested. I simply move on.
I am ambivalent to this tourism craziness. I do think, people need places to let steam off, relax, misbehave, get drunk and party, a gated community like a resort or even a whole city or village that separates them from the locals and preserves peace of the rest of the country. It provides jobs and infrastructure development, and those places are aeasy to avoid for normal people. It is gets bad if a whole economy is focussed on tourism and basically becomes a disneyland folclore zoo. I understand people want to see the world but have not the time nor the money, only few privileged can afford doing it without cheap organized mass tourism. A new way around is unfortunately to embrace the vagabond lifestyle without the social risk ending up as a poor a homeless begger by using the internet like Instagramm, TH-cam and Patreon to get paid for it, but you have to deliver attractions on a weekly base. It is not a problem if few people do it, but it becomes an avalanche snowball problem, because there are too many lining up for a free ride or at least a photo of the places their idols were..

Thought provoking. We didn’t choose to start life in the west and you can’t really choose the simple rural life abroad wherever you want. I wish travelers would adopt the backpacker ethic of leave no trace behind.
but like all things, not all backpacker live/travel by that ethic, good & bad
I agree, it's a good ethic to travel by, Jim. Sadly there will always be good travellers and bad travellers, no matter how they travel.
