  • More wild broodstock programs have changed the way hatcheries operate, as the method requires a lot more hands-on work and careful handling of these fish. For #SteelheadWeek, we visited Alsea Hatchery, which produces mostly trout and a lot of steelhead over the course of a year. Sr. hatchery tech Eric Hammonds walks us through a typical winter day at the hatchery.

    Do any get a chance to be transported to open water systems? Like the deschutes, john day or umatilla river?

    Imagine being one of these fish living through this horror show of being picked up by humans, forced to squirt eggs into a container, then released like what the heck happened? I bet they tell their fish friends and it’s akin to being abducted by aliens.
