- The extended version of "Méditation", a symphonic intermezzo from the opera Thaïs by French composer Jules Massenet.
The "Méditation" is an instrumental entr'acte performed between the scenes of Act II in the opera Thaïs. In the first scene of Act II, Athanaël, a Cenobite monk, confronts Thaïs, a beautiful and hedonistic courtesan and devotée of Venus and attempts to persuade her to leave her life of luxury and pleasure and find salvation through God. It is during a time of reflection following the encounter that the Méditation is played by the orchestra. In the second scene of Act II, following the Méditation, Thaïs tells Athanaël that she will follow him to the desert. (source: wikipedia.org)

Thais meditation is an epic piece of musical work, an ageless melody for the soul. A great, and yet, a tragic end of a story that melts the heart for its purity as it portrays human struggle to get closer to the lord almighty, to be pious, virtuous, and commit to goodness. I cannot get enough of this piece for its utter beauty and sad melodious feel, it makes me cry every time I dare listening to it, which I do quite often and glorify God almighty for enlightening me to know good and evil. This is the most hauntingly beautiful piece of music, I could listen to it all day. It reminds me of my father who just loved listening to his brother & 2 youngest sisters playing the violin. Our earth is richer for such a masterpiece.

Im 90years old. Have been playing since 1986. But playing by a book called "All for strings,and could only go so far in th 2econ book. Then I needed a teacher. r. play by ear to church music. And I did fairly well on radio WDAC.What little I learned, I took to church and played with others that done the same, played in there sits, any where in church. The Barcuse meaning, A lullaby to the Christ Child". The next one I want to learn is Meditation"! I go to sleep listen to it. God bless to all that listen to it... This is such a beautiful piece of music that I can't pass a day without listening to it several times a day, especially before falling asleep because it fills my mind and heart with such a peaceful beauty and relaxation without it I am almost always unable to fall asleep easily.

This is my favorite piece of music when I was four years old. I listen to it through the years. Now I am 86. Still one of my favorites, besides Serenade Schubert....among others.

I know this opera quite well and "Meditation" is a very appropriate Intermezzo to the context of the story. I especially like the version with Michele Pertusi and Eva Mei. The Dancers in the opera are quite beautiful and again appropriate to the story line.
