I only got mine in adult life and for a whole year they were my sister's chickens so I only got to know them properly during the first pandemic lockdown. She soon realised they had become my chickens and that they loved me too much and gave them to me 😂😂

Yes, it really is her.🙂 it took a lot of work helping her along but the day has come when she is able to hop around the garden and even roost on her own! I am shook too! 😂😂 I honestly didnt know whether she would ever be able to do it, but so glad she is making progress. Thank goodness for her strong personality and will to live!

Thank you Jackie. I did try crushed eggs shells in the past but they didint like it so much. In the end I found some extra fine oyster shell (the type made for budgies) and they really liked that. They have it all the time but Squeak is very bad about not eating it often enough and I think Defiance is still learning... Plus I think the lack of sun here at this time of year was not helping matters - it also helps for strong egg shells. I hope they have now stopped laying for the rest of the winter and fingers crossed they get better at eating oystershell by the time summer comes. All the best.
Hi Ayesha, I tried to find pictures but those little cockerels would never stand still so I don't have any good ones. I will keep looking and might post a video instead. But for now I can tell you that Chick Five (Defiance's brother who kept her company) looked exactly like Mr Snuggles when he grew up, the same dark red all over, but a tiny bit paler. Then if you look at the current batch of cockerels in my latest two videos, Chick Three from last time grew to be deep golden much like one in this batch, and Chick One grew to be dark/mottled just like two are in this current batch. As for the remaining two, I think I will try to put a little video together and hopefully you will see them there. Baby Two (Precious's baby) was particularly beautiful I thought. He had black lace edging on some of his feathers and brown in the middle, and a lovely posture.

Hi Harvey, so glad you enjoyed the update. Yes, it turned out the chick with Defiance was a rooster. All the other five except her were roosters in the end! I had to give them away because we dont have enough hens to keep two roosters in our garden. We would need at least 10 hens per rooster to keep them from fighting. Sadly Lulu passed away in the summer, which was awful, from heat stroke. We rarely get very hot weather in the UK and it was completely unexpected. I had meant to mention her in this video and only during editing realised I had forgotten to say. Her passing was the reason I hatched out this latest batch of chicks, hoping for at least a couple more girls, but got all roosters instead. Thanks for remembering Lulu so fondly. She was Mr snuggles's fave and he missed her for a while. Thankfully my extra precautions during our mini-heatwave meant the rest of the flock was fine. All the best.

Thank you, and for your good wishes for Defiance too. I was so stressed about her future at one point - lol. I guess that happens when you get so wrapped up in caring for a sick chick. I will make more videos of these little cockerels growing up for you. I hope they stay good boys through the winter. Fingers crossed! So far they have been wonderful and no real fighting at all. I think it's because I kept them away from the hens, which is what starts them being too competetive with each other. Have a great day! I do not think I will be able to keep even one baby roo. In the last batch Chick Five (Defiance's brother who was her buddy) was actually such a good and calm little roo, and Mr Snuggles got on with him quite well. BUT I would have always had to keep him and Defiance separated from the rest of the flock if I kept him, AND kept him separated from Defiance a lot of the time in case he injured her when he jumped on top of her. And I couldnt do that. So I had to give him away. The problem is that for each rooster you need to have at least ten hens if you want to stop the roos from fighting. That's the general rule anyway.

Do Serama chickens normally have so many different colors?! I have silver duckwing bantams and all the roosters look the same and there are only two variations in color for the hens. What a nice flock you have! 🐔🐥
Hi Isaac, and thank you. Yes seramas come in all sorts of colors. They are a relatively new breed so they dont breed true to color. The chicks can look like anything and wont necessarily look like thier parents. Which is a pity because I would love to have one that looks like our yellow Sweet Pea. One baby from the last batch looked almost a twin of Mr Snuggles. And there is one growing up now who also might end up all red. The rest look nothing like their parents at all. But its also very interesting to see what the chicks will look like as they grow. Hope your silver duckwings are doing well. Take care
Thank you for posting an update! After watching this video, I was curious - do you think that some of the hatching issues could be related to the issues that are at times inherit with Serama genetics?
Hello, Glad you enjoyed it! I know there is a japanese short leg gene issue with seramas sometimes, but in this case I don't think that is the issue. I contacted an experienced breeder of serama and he said that sometimes in a poor hatch (when only a few of the eggs hatch) he also tends to get mainly cockerels because they are stronger and they survive. I think part of the problem might be that Sweet Pea and Precious were both a bit unsettled during both of their hatches (in the second hatch we had a sudden red mite issue that I had to competely clean out so I moved their nests midway through the hatch.) Plus I have rarely seen them turn their eggs like they should be doing. I might try different things if we do another hatch in the spring, and then we might have more of an answer. The reason I don't think there is an issue with genetics is because when Mr Snuggles and Precious and Sweet Pea hatched from their eggs those were the only three fertile eggs we got through shipping and all three hatched. It's a small number, I know, but that's what I am going off. Plus in the second hatch most eggs were from Squeak who is not related to Mr Snuggles at all, and yet we had the same bad hatch rate. So I suspect it was tricky hatch conditions for the eggs that was the problem. Have a great day!
I'm so glad she grew up. She's still much smaller than she should be, but healthy, so that is good. Defiance's sister turned out to be a brother! He was very devoted to her but he ended up trying to jump on her when he became a teenager (as roosters do) - and she was still so tiny it would have injured her. First I had to separate them to prevent her being injured - he still hung out with her through the chicken wire fence. In the end I had to give him away with the rest of our cockerels (I was so sad because he was such a GOOD boy!) But it had become SO noisy in the garden (we have neighbours all around), and because even two roosters in our little flock was going to be too much trouble with all the fighitng, and the risk of Defiance getting injured. @@sumathi1508 Thank you. Lulu was around 3 years old. I read somewhere that seramas can live on average 7 years, but they are susceptible to heart conditions too. Poor Lulu. I like to think of her as keeping her sisiter Artemis company somewhere in the great big beyond. We lost Artemis some months earlier than Lulu. Take care.
It's nice that defiant is alright other than the leg injury. Was all the other chicks boys? I'm guessing you are going to give then away. Let's hope the others hatch more hens.
Hi Cornish, good to hear from you. The biggest challenge with Defiance right now is making sure she is happy with life in the flock. She;s still nervous of the other chickens, but I hope to get her more confident in time. Fingers crossed. You are right - the others all turned out to be roosters! An experienced breeder told me this sometimes happens in poor hatches (when only half the eggs hatch) and the ones who make it tend to be the cockerels. I think I need to look into what went wrong with our hatch conditions. Hopefully there will be better luck if I do another hatch next year. It would be nice to have a couple more girls in the flock. Hope all is going well with you and your flock. Can you beleive winter is ocming so quickly! Poor chickens! 🙂
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 yeah that's good she's still has a chance. I also had some hatches. Got 14 medium fowl chicks and I tried hatching some more sebrights, a half breed hatched and 1 pure one hatch that is currently still alive from 12 eggs. Can't be worse than that. All my other chickens are doing well. Some are moulting and are looking scruffy. The sebright chicks that hatched last year are both boys but are really got show quality I think. I'm trying to show them soon. Put up the ads for the cockerels yet? Else it'll get noisy.

Luckily this batch has not been too noisy so far - I am keeping my fingers crossed they will stay that way, but they never do, do they! lol. I hope keeping them feeling secure and away from the hens will mean they arent feeling too ruffled or stressed and thus less noisy. Fingers crossed for my little experiment!

There's a show in January down here so hopefully I can go. When you hatch out some hens? Would you breed those with me snuggles or try get a different cockerel?
@@cornishchickens6778 I might order more hatching eggs from ebay to get a new bloodline, or I might just buy some pullets instead to save the risk of hatching out too many cockerels again! Not sure yet. Cockerels really are such a handful, arent they? I am amazed this lot of mine is being good so far and am praying it continues, but sooner or later they will realise they are teens and the drama will start I am sure! I had a broody bantam hen this summer who laid and hatch 10/10 eggs and there were 4 boys and 6 girls. I don’t know what I would have done if they were all boys 🤷♂️
So glad you got a good percentage of females! With mine I think all the girls didnt make it possibly due to something wrong in the hatching conditions. I shall have to try different things in future. I had really been hoping for girls but it wasnt to be this time! Wish me luck for next time! 🙂
Hi Varshith - Defiance in this video is one of the two chicks. She was the injured one. The other chick that I put in her brooder to keep her company (Chick Five) turned out to be a rooster in the end. When he grew up I could not have two roosters in my small flock (not enough hens to keep them from fighting) so I had to give all the baby cockerels away once they grew up. i was sad to see him go.
Egg sex is determined by temperature and this temperature dependency varies widely by breed. While Squeak may not seem like she can keep the eggs warm enough, giving them to a mother whose nest is warmer can prompt them to become male.

I had been thinking that the chances were that she probably came from Sweet Pea or Precious, but I do wonder now if she might have been Lulu's. I would love it if she was. We learned a few months ago that we are becoming Grand-Parents for the first time on my husband's side, so we are thrilled ! And I made a baby blanket, a little hat and will be making a pair of booties tomorrow . 😄Hubby said it makes him old, I laughed ^^ .

Yes, it really is her.🙂 it took a lot of work helping her along but the day has come when she is able to hop around the garden and even roost on her own! I am shook too! 😂😂 I honestly didnt know whether she would ever be able to do it, but so glad she is making progress. Thank goodness for her strong personality and will to live!

If you give the hens crushed egg shells, it will help harden the egg shells that the hens lay.
Thank you Jackie. I did try crushed eggs shells in the past but they didint like it so much. In the end I found some extra fine oyster shell (the type made for budgies) and they really liked that. They have it all the time but Squeak is very bad about not eating it often enough and I think Defiance is still learning... Plus I think the lack of sun here at this time of year was not helping matters - it also helps for strong egg shells. I hope they have now stopped laying for the rest of the winter and fingers crossed they get better at eating oystershell by the time summer comes. All the best.

Hi Ayesha, I tried to find pictures but those little cockerels would never stand still so I don't have any good ones. I will keep looking and might post a video instead. But for now I can tell you that Chick Five (Defiance's brother who kept her company) looked exactly like Mr Snuggles when he grew up, the same dark red all over, but a tiny bit paler. Then if you look at the current batch of cockerels in my latest two videos, Chick Three from last time grew to be deep golden much like one in this batch, and Chick One grew to be dark/mottled just like two are in this current batch. As for the remaining two, I think I will try to put a little video together and hopefully you will see them there. Baby Two (Precious's baby) was particularly beautiful I thought. He had black lace edging on some of his feathers and brown in the middle, and a lovely posture.

Hi Harvey, so glad you enjoyed the update. Yes, it turned out the chick with Defiance was a rooster. All the other five except her were roosters in the end! I had to give them away because we dont have enough hens to keep two roosters in our garden. We would need at least 10 hens per rooster to keep them from fighting. Sadly Lulu passed away in the summer, which was awful, from heat stroke. We rarely get very hot weather in the UK and it was completely unexpected. I had meant to mention her in this video and only during editing realised I had forgotten to say. Her passing was the reason I hatched out this latest batch of chicks, hoping for at least a couple more girls, but got all roosters instead. Thanks for remembering Lulu so fondly. She was Mr snuggles's fave and he missed her for a while. Thankfully my extra precautions during our mini-heatwave meant the rest of the flock was fine. All the best.

I do not think I will be able to keep even one baby roo. In the last batch Chick Five (Defiance's brother who was her buddy) was actually such a good and calm little roo, and Mr Snuggles got on with him quite well. BUT I would have always had to keep him and Defiance separated from the rest of the flock if I kept him, AND kept him separated from Defiance a lot of the time in case he injured her when he jumped on top of her. And I couldnt do that. So I had to give him away. The problem is that for each rooster you need to have at least ten hens if you want to stop the roos from fighting. That's the general rule anyway.

Do Serama chickens normally have so many different colors?! I have silver duckwing bantams and all the roosters look the same and there are only two variations in color for the hens. What a nice flock you have! 🐔🐥
Hi Isaac, and thank you. Yes seramas come in all sorts of colors. They are a relatively new breed so they dont breed true to color. The chicks can look like anything and wont necessarily look like thier parents. Which is a pity because I would love to have one that looks like our yellow Sweet Pea. One baby from the last batch looked almost a twin of Mr Snuggles. And there is one growing up now who also might end up all red. The rest look nothing like their parents at all. But its also very interesting to see what the chicks will look like as they grow. Hope your silver duckwings are doing well. Take care

After watching this video, I was curious - do you think that some of the hatching issues could be related to the issues that are at times inherit with Serama genetics?
Hello, Glad you enjoyed it! I know there is a japanese short leg gene issue with seramas sometimes, but in this case I don't think that is the issue. I contacted an experienced breeder of serama and he said that sometimes in a poor hatch (when only a few of the eggs hatch) he also tends to get mainly cockerels because they are stronger and they survive. I think part of the problem might be that Sweet Pea and Precious were both a bit unsettled during both of their hatches (in the second hatch we had a sudden red mite issue that I had to competely clean out so I moved their nests midway through the hatch.) Plus I have rarely seen them turn their eggs like they should be doing. I might try different things if we do another hatch in the spring, and then we might have more of an answer. The reason I don't think there is an issue with genetics is because when Mr Snuggles and Precious and Sweet Pea hatched from their eggs those were the only three fertile eggs we got through shipping and all three hatched. It's a small number, I know, but that's what I am going off. Plus in the second hatch most eggs were from Squeak who is not related to Mr Snuggles at all, and yet we had the same bad hatch rate. So I suspect it was tricky hatch conditions for the eggs that was the problem. Have a great day!
I was shock that defiance was big now and where's defiance sister?
I'm so glad she grew up. She's still much smaller than she should be, but healthy, so that is good. Defiance's sister turned out to be a brother! He was very devoted to her but he ended up trying to jump on her when he became a teenager (as roosters do) - and she was still so tiny it would have injured her. First I had to separate them to prevent her being injured - he still hung out with her through the chicken wire fence. In the end I had to give him away with the rest of our cockerels (I was so sad because he was such a GOOD boy!) But it had become SO noisy in the garden (we have neighbours all around), and because even two roosters in our little flock was going to be too much trouble with all the fighitng, and the risk of Defiance getting injured. @@sumathi1508 Thank you. Lulu was around 3 years old. I read somewhere that seramas can live on average 7 years, but they are susceptible to heart conditions too. Poor Lulu. I like to think of her as keeping her sisiter Artemis company somewhere in the great big beyond. We lost Artemis some months earlier than Lulu. Take care.

Hi Cornish, good to hear from you. The biggest challenge with Defiance right now is making sure she is happy with life in the flock. She;s still nervous of the other chickens, but I hope to get her more confident in time. Fingers crossed. You are right - the others all turned out to be roosters! An experienced breeder told me this sometimes happens in poor hatches (when only half the eggs hatch) and the ones who make it tend to be the cockerels. I think I need to look into what went wrong with our hatch conditions. Hopefully there will be better luck if I do another hatch next year. It would be nice to have a couple more girls in the flock. Hope all is going well with you and your flock. Can you beleive winter is ocming so quickly! Poor chickens! 🙂
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 yeah that's good she's still has a chance. I also had some hatches. Got 14 medium fowl chicks and I tried hatching some more sebrights, a half breed hatched and 1 pure one hatch that is currently still alive from 12 eggs. Can't be worse than that. All my other chickens are doing well. Some are moulting and are looking scruffy. The sebright chicks that hatched last year are both boys but are really got show quality I think. I'm trying to show them soon.
Put up the ads for the cockerels yet? Else it'll get noisy.

Luckily this batch has not been too noisy so far - I am keeping my fingers crossed they will stay that way, but they never do, do they! lol. There's a show in January down here so hopefully I can go. When you hatch out some hens? Would you breed those with me snuggles or try get a different cockerel?
@@cornishchickens6778 I might order more hatching eggs from ebay to get a new bloodline, or I might just buy some pullets instead to save the risk of hatching out too many cockerels again! Not sure yet. Cockerels really are such a handful, arent they? I am amazed this lot of mine is being good so far and am praying it continues, but sooner or later they will realise they are teens and the drama will start I am sure! I had a broody bantam hen this summer who laid and hatch 10/10 eggs and there were 4 boys and 6 girls. I don’t know what I would have done if they were all boys 🤷♂️
So glad you got a good percentage of females! With mine I think all the girls didnt make it possibly due to something wrong in the hatching conditions. I shall have to try different things in future. I had really been hoping for girls but it wasnt to be this time! Wish me luck for next time! 🙂
What happen to the two chicks which you seprated form moms
Hi Varshith - Defiance in this video is one of the two chicks. She was the injured one. The other chick that I put in her brooder to keep her company (Chick Five) turned out to be a rooster in the end. When he grew up I could not have two roosters in my small flock (not enough hens to keep them from fighting) so I had to give all the baby cockerels away once they grew up. i was sad to see him go.
Egg sex is determined by temperature and this temperature dependency varies widely by breed. While Squeak may not seem like she can keep the eggs warm enough, giving them to a mother whose nest is warmer can prompt them to become male.

I had been thinking that the chances were that she probably came from Sweet Pea or Precious, but I do wonder now if she might have been Lulu's. I would love it if she was.
