    Fellow 63-year old rider and I hope to be riding for another 20-years 🙂 Doesn't really matter how we all ride. Just have fun getting out in nature and exploring your surroundings.

      How we ride is a matter of personal preference, for some people its a sport competitive, some social, some convenience, some just for fun - it doesn't matter whatever works for you. It's like my Mecedes SLK, capable of 150mph but not with me in it. I ride the Master the same way it can do 50mph, but not with me on it :-)

    Ah! The old guys corner of which at 77 I am also one, probably the older. A very good insight on wheels. I've got nine wheels and I've been riding for some 7 years also had a few decent falls. For me, I personally don't see the point of the really big wheels, I'm still working 7 days and don't have the time to mess around on really long runs. And if it's speed im looking for. I'll just jump on one of my motorcycles also much fun! Be it one wheel or two wheels, both are great for muscle tone, balance and exercising your brain!

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely, and failing off is no fun though the falls I have had, have caused less damage than one may have thought. Motorcycles, I have had a few in my time, I don't ride now. The really big wheels, I don't have the stamina for the distance. Still working, a bit keen, but don't think you will have time on your hands when you retire - it doesn't work like that 🙂 Great exercise as you say, there is a maxim for people of a certain age, use it or lose it.

    Thanks for that..I enjoyed. I’m 70 years old and have been riding for three years. I started with a V8f, and after 2000 kms moved on to a V12HT. I still use the V8 a lot though, for shopping, putting the recycling out, running errands and dog walking…the V8 is so easy to live with.it’s usually in the car…just in case. I really enjoy the V12, and living in a hilly area, the extra grunt is useful. I could not agree more about starting on a lighter wheel..sue..you can learn on anything, but learning on a big heavy wheel would certainly make life difficult, frustra band potentially painful.

    Started with a Begode MCM5 a year ago when I turned 70. Then it was. Nikola and now a Master for two months which I love. Will never buy another non suspension wheel but glad I learned on a non suspension as bending your knees is critical to learn. We all learn at different speeds but make the financial commitment and buy one and your relaxed confidence will grow. Tremendous joy to ride and very stable.

    Nice job and good to get the perspective of a fellow "oldster". Starting on the small wheel is excellent advice to which I'd add cover the starter wheel with protection and it will stay in good shape. I started on the 16S and when I sold it, I ripped off the padding, cleaned it up, and it looked like new. It's also good to hear from someone who didn't say "I learned in an hour". I certainly didn't learn in anything close to an hour. I've been riding off-road a lot this year and it's increased my skills a lot. I did not like my Master when I first got it, but once it went off-road, I loved it. Non-suspension kills the knees off-road.

    Good advice. I have a king song 14d, 16x and S22 pro. I use them in almost the exact same way as you do. It's true that small wheels are not just for learning but have practical value for every level of rider. WRONG WAY and TRUB both use the 14d still and they are much better riders than most of us ever will be.

    I'm 60 and have been riding for about 4 or 5 years and currently ride a Nikola Plus in London. Can I quickly say that the 16X might have 30mph listed as it's top speed but it definitely isn't safe at that speed and may well cut out. It is a brilliant wheel at slightly slower speeds though. The ranges quoted are also the ranges when travelling at 15mph with a 75kg rider. If you ride faster or weigh more then your range will be much shorter. My own wheel is capable of 40mph (apparently) but my preferred speed is about 25mph but sadly, because I always ride on the road, I do need to be able to keep with traffic at 30mph on the faster suburban roads. If I need to go faster than 30 then I don't take the unicycle - I just don't feel they're safe enough on the road at that speed. I'll also mention that the weight of these wheels can be around 30kg which is something to think about if you're planning on putting it in the back of a car or lifting it up stairs.

    I turn 50 this year. I’ve had my s18 for 2 years. My first and only wheel. I have gotten extremely skilled when it comes to street riding so much that I have had to raise the foot plates to prevent pedal scraping when turning. I love my wheel but am looking for something faster with more range. I have my eye on the extreme bill commander mini or the ex30. Great video. Nice to know that I have many more years of riding ahead of me.

      I put Nylonove footplates on the S18 because as I got more adventurous my feet would slip on the grip tape, particularly off road where you can get mud on them easily. Fitted them to the 16X as well. I never used anything other than the stock pads, not wanting to overpower the machine.

      The key to not owning a huge fleet of wheels is buying used and selling at a reasonable depreciation. It's good being in the market for wheels that have proven themselves over time... the problem is that new wheel hype is what pays the bill, so the hidden value of the 16x or v10f go underappreciated. Even the z10 is an interesting first wheel for many. I'm seeing too many top end EUCs with extremely low mileage, which could mean that people are shooting for the latest and ultimately giving up on the hobby. And, that's an incredible disservice to new riders making tough decisions.

    I’m 58 and started riding EUC’s around 5 months ago. I’ve been riding e-skateboards for 3 years. It’s great to hear an older rider’s perspective which is really helpful for those who are older and just discovered EUC riding. I started with a $600 Mten4 300wh. Light and not too expensive. Low pedals and not having to worry too much about bashing it made it a great starter wheel but the smaller diameter didn’t make the transition feel to standard EUC’s which are usually 16-18” as natural as it should. I think the Kingsong 16S or Inmotion V5 or V8 are better starter wheels. I next moved up to the V11 and at first could not ride it at all, but then suddenly one day it just clicked and the feeling was like day and night between the Mten4. Floating on clouds and stable at higher speeds, it was probably the feeling everyone loves about EUC riding that I couldn’t quite feel on the Mten4. I now use the Mten4 to learn to ride backwards. It took a few hours but I was able to do it. I cannot do it on the V11 yet, probably because I’m afraid of scruffing it or the higher pedals/higher weight? Next I bought a Kingsong s16 to ride off-road. I have found out I’m not as good as I think as I don’t feel the same confidence as when riding the V11. The s16 feels fidgety and unstable at higher speeds compared to the V11 but can anybody chime in its because its a 16” wheel or does it just take time to get use to it? I’m guessing its more the later. I am so tempted to get a Veteran Lynx but I think I’m jumping the gun and may never attain the skills to ride faster then 40kph.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think a lot of how we control/ feel stable on an EUC is unconscious control. Like you don't have to think to stand upright we balance instinctively. That's all fine except when you transfer from one machine to another, then the feed back is different and a machine that once was second nature now feels a bit off because you haven't ridden it for a while. For this reason I always let myself get a few miles under my belt when I haven't ridden a machine for a while, I always seem to be more comfortable into the journey than at the beginning. At the end of the day its time on the machine and also working the machine, none of this zombie type riding. Having said that at 66 now I'm never going to match the skills I see on TH-cam here, and that's fine by me, I'll ride how it pleases me best, and I have more room for improvement than many 🙂.

    I'm over the hill and picked up riding EUC this year. Took a 1 hour feel lesson on a smaller EUC like the Inmotion V8/10 followed by two more 1 hour sessions and I was off. Next I ended up buying my 1st EUC the Kingsong S22 and learning to ride well on this and still learning. Once you get free mounting down, riding opens up for you. No more looking for poles to push off from. I agree a lighter EUC with a lower pedal is the way to go. You need to build new muscles as well as basic skills. Once you got this master, it will be a lot easier moving on to a bigger, heavier wheel. I still had to push myself mentally through the fear and doubts that almost everyone goes through. Now I am having fun and going to places I would rarely go to.

    After building my confidence, and practicing just 1 day with that, I was able to ride the V12 from then on!
    I second. Start with a small wheel.

  • @rcgldr
    @rcgldr ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I started 2 years ago at 69 on a V8F. I only ride 50 miles a month (I have other hobbies), and weight is an issue with how I have to load | unload an EUC into my car, so I haven't upgraded yet. My experience when learning was a bit different than most. After 15 minutes of beginner drills (like using a wall and rocking back and forth), I ventured out at slow speed, 3 to 5 mph, with my arms extended and flailed arms left to twist EUC right and vice versa, for balance and direction, and was able to do laps around a tennis court on my first attempt. This is similar to riding a bike at slow speeds with constant steering corrections (which I was already able to do). I moved to a long straight parking lot, and while riding straight at around 8 mph, I no longer had to make any balance corrections, and could essentially just stand still while riding, and was aware that I hadn't suddenly learned to ride, but instead was riding fast enough for the V8F to become self-stable (also like a bicycle). This is because a imbalance will cause an EUC to tilt and steer into direction of imbalance, and at sufficient speed, it self-corrects. It was then I learned to tilt steer, small tilts at first to get used to how the V8F would respond, then some weaving, and finally large radius turns. Over the next few days, I learned to coordinate how much to tilt the EUC versus how much to lean depending on speed and turning radius. However, for most riders, the slow speed riding is something that can be saved for later, and instead focus on going a bit faster where an EUC becomes more stable or completely stable.

      I think some people take to an EUC quicker than others. Youngsters tend to do very well with short stature, light weight, flexibility, short distance to the ground 🙂 and generally being made of rubber, they appear to bounce before getting right back on. Slow speed riding is an essential skill as you say, but just being able to ride at all is first priority. Being able to ride slowly helps in all sorts of situations not least it makes the learning process to ride backwards easier

    • @rcgldr
      @rcgldr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Roskellan - the main point I was getting at is that riding in a straight line around 8 mph is more about trusting the EUC to self-balance as opposed to learning a skill. As I commented, I can essentially stand still while riding my V8F in a straight line at 8 mph.

    Yeah good subject, I'm in BC, spend half my time in Vancouver with a wheel & us old buggers aren't so rare. My stable is a d14, ex20s & a molicel S18. Snap, I love the no sag S18 the best, its got spikes that help but, its that light weight that wins me.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  ปีที่แล้ว

      My S18 is the 50e but I have a current alarm set to avoid sag (not generally a problem anyway). A light nimble wheel with excellent suspension and 26 miles of range, what's not to like 🙂 I put spiked foot plates on mine as well (Nylonove), highly recommended modification.

    I’m turning 60 in 6 months , looking and researching my first EUC, I’ve skateboarded in the 80’s , ride a track/fixed gear bike still to this day, have arthritis on my lower joints, ankles, can barely walk, it gets inflamed and nothing can be done, except higher doses of pain killers, but not into that. I do ride my ebike and scooter, lifting it up 3 flights up and down. 70 lbs for each of the ride, I don’t really lift it as much as dragging it, up a stair at a time.

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keeping in mind that the control of an EUC is through your feet, adjusting your weight, bending your knees. A certain fluency and flexibility is required in ankles and knees. Even stepping onto the thing needs strength and control in the leg first on the machine.

    I started 3 months ago at 72 years old on a V5. I hav 435 miles on it now. Just about all of it asphalt freestyle riding. My V5 has hit the ground a 1,000 times easy. Only twice hav i not landed safely on my legs though. Im looking to upgrade now and hav a v11 on loaner in my garage. Boy, dies that thing like to train track 😲! And such a pig in my usual asphalt freestyle spots ☹️. Needless to say i hate it. So i hav my eye on yur S18 model or the V8S. I hav my motorcycle for tear assing around on streets so i need a portable "pit wheel" when i go racing my ktm or a "driveway wheel" when hanging w my 5 grandchildren. Anyway, txs for yur video !!

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The S18 is a great wheel. it has the 18" advantage over the 16X and it's lighter with suspension as well. Always a price, in this case the S18 does not have the torque of the 16X, it doesn't have the range (about 26miles for the S18) and because of the smaller battery capacity (1100Wh) it is prone to voltage sag if you provoke it (I set a current alarm for 27A in EUC World). I have overdriven the wheel by trying to accelerate on significant gradients and the motor gives you warning in that it feels sounds like a coffee grinder under your feet. Having said that 26-27mph at 60% battery is fine on decent surfaces.

    • @snowdirt62
      @snowdirt62 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Roskellan Thanks ! The V5 has all the same faults of the S18 times 10 😲. Thats why im confident i can live with the S18 voltage sag to get nimble handling and suspension. 👍

    • @Roskellan
      @Roskellan  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Aches and pains the joys of getting older. Yes my knees are not what they were, I only ride the S18 off road because of the suspension and because its a repetitively light wheel. The 16x although I really like the wheel I ride the least because of the lack of suspension. The 16X is a road wheel I use when I want the range but can't be asked to lift the Master in and out of the car. It is nimble and its my weapon of choice to expand my skills riding backwards.

      I did all my initial leaning on another Ninebot One E+ not in this video. I covered the thing in furniture foam and it's the most scuffed up of my machines. I also broke the handle. Next the Kingsong 16X, same story, covered it in furniture foam. My worst fall on that machine, at all of 9mph. The S18 and Master I have never crashed Per sey, I have come off them of course, but nothing I couldn't immediately get up from. I'm by no means a dare devil, I try to improve my skills on the machine for sure, but incremental and considered. I doubt if I will ever duplicate some of the skills you see commonly exhibited on TH-cam but that doesn't bother me. I ride for fun and push the envelope sufficient to have a moment or two, but not enough to be taking undue risks or putting undue wear and tear on the machines. I will be learning for a while longer I think, I'm still not really close to the standard I would like to be at.
