I think what makes so many flash games creepy is their unpredictability. Its not rated, theres no advertising to spoil everything, any game could literally have anything in it and the only way to experience it is by playing it. Its really kind of the rawest form of video games, and i think thats why flash games today are sort of held in this legendary status. Its where you find the most creative games from people who have no obligation to any standardization. Thats often a blessing and a curse
Flash games were fun little projects created purely for passion and fun during a time before the commercialization of every corner of the internet.
Reminds me of how websites used to be. People used to have fun with them.
End of an era.
One flash game I always liked was the Don't Escape series. They were fairly simple point and click games, but something about their vibe, especially the second one is something I'll always remember. Great video as always!
The dude who made those SCRIPTWELDER is still making games!
if you played scriptwelders deep sleep games, theyre coming out with a new one called deep sleep labyrinth of the forsaken :)
Yeah. I hate that they started charging
Really glad you covered The Day, I played that game as a kid for like 5 seconds before getting creeped out and stopping. I always wondered what else was going on, now I know, so thanks!
I think it was some kind of nuclear war that caused the end of the earth around the camp. With the presence of the army and the silo being more powerful than the laser drone card, it makes sense to me. I didn't read any of the computers though so maybe they explain it there. (Also, I've never heard of this game before! Wish I had!)
Your videos are the best for putting in the background, you've got such a comforting voice and the subject matter is always interesting, keep it up my friend!
Never knew about The Last Stand 1 or 2, but after this video I’m really tempted to check them out, what amazing in-depth systems to include for Flash games!
They also have a paid game in the series that was in an Epic Games giveaway recently. I tried it, it was pretty fun actually
THE LEGEND IS HEEREEE!!!
The last stand: union city (which is the 4th game in the series I think) is geniunely the best flash game i have ever played.
I just wanna point out something I noticed about animal puncher. At 27:16 before Eric's nightmare flashback segment the alarm clock is Maromi, the mascot character from the 2004 anime Paranoia Agent. It's a creepy mystery / thriller where you can't really trust what you're seeing at face value, and without spoiling any of that great show I'll say that Maromi is a very fitting symbol for "Past unfortunate memories gaining a life of their own" which is perfect for that flash game. I only saw that show earlier this year and I highly, highly recommend it!
Interesting detail; that certainly does make me think
I recently got reminded by a friend of "Can Your Pet..." That's probably the most disturbing, or at the very least the most shocking flash game I remember playing from back in the day
I remember when I first saw it I was like 11 or 12 and I misread the game's title as "Can You Pet" like- a question. It was incredibly shocking for me to see at such a young age tbh.
I have strong memories of playing The Day as a kid, and just thought it was a neat uneasy cryptic game, had no idea you could go into the trees. This video blew my mind
You just reminded me of "The day" existing. I remember playing it multiple times when I was very young. Back then, I was confused by the laser drone appearing in the "true" ending. I knew that something was wrong, but didn't really understand what.
This is just something I noticed. All of the villagers are of a darker completion than the depicted soldiers, who are pale. I don't know if this has some deeper meaning or not, but I found it interesting.
it's an intern camp or something apparently, so that's not great.
I noticed that too. Made me uncomfortable thinking about the possible implications of what that means.
@@chillfactory9000 Ironic how the soldiers were the ones to be wiped out.
This was genuinely one of the most entertaining videos I’ve watched in so long. You’ve got to make a second part or something, man. Seriously, great work.
You always bring forward all the vibes and awe that i experienced as a child raised by the internet. Capturing all the nostalgic quiet, mysterious, and chill vibes of exploring a time where the internet was far less filled with content but more obscure, sorta low quality but hand crafted media made with passion. It was a strange, simple but fun time.
omg, that surgery game brought back MEMORIES! I also used to do the frog dissection simulator over and over and over again.. it’s a wonder I didn’t end up on a list lol
Great video as always, I'm surprised you didn't bring up "Free Ice cream". That one really disturbed me when I was little
That one seriously stuck in my head, I've never been so freaked out before.
Flash games really have a certain vibe to them. I don’t know why, they just feel kind of creepy sometimes.
It's the framerate
Especially when they have really low quality audio and visuals
I feel like for a lot of us it was being a kid, alone, on the family computer, finding the weirdest games or things with adult themes, gore, or plain old creep factor.
the one i remember the most from my childhood was one chance where you are trying to make a cure to save the earth from a virus and you always fail where everyone dies.
I remember One Chance too! It made me miserable like nothing else had when I was just a kid and I've avoided it ever since lmao.
Oh my god, I watched someone play that as a kid and it stuck with me.
Legit,I was trying to find how to raise a dragon game for so,SO long, but I couldn't remember the name of it until you name dropped it
Thanks a lot man,have a free like
Getting scared for fun is something I have yet to understand myself, but I really enjoy watching other people get scared in my stead lol
at least dialko is here to help me through this breakup :)
seriously the vids and streams are comforting, and i love them.
God bless ya and Jesus loves ya, friend, brighter days lie ahead!
having end of small sanctuary play at the beginning when talking about somethjing so nostalgic is such a nice choice
omg. I forgot about the dark cut. I remember playing it as a kid. Weirdly I think it grosses me out more as an adult now than it did back then
Same, lol.
who up flashin' they games?
I had totally forgotten about the flash games era, it seems like such a long time ago.
The only flash games I still remember playing are Crush the castle and the Tonypa games (like High Wheels and Cobacoli) , which seem to be lost now since flash went away.
Nice fun reminder of those obscure and experimental games.
the Cube Escape games, the free flash game half of the Rusty Lake series, caught me pretty off guard as an early teen. I know the first of the games I played was The Theatre but I can't remember if I stumbled upon it myself or if Kongregate had it as a game you could get every achievement in for a limited time to get a little pet for your profile. the whole series is very David Lynch inspired so my young mind being exposed to such surreal and creepy material definitely shaped my tastes in media as a whole. eventually I got around to playing the rest of the Cube Escape games, then I played the Rusty Lake games and fell in love with all of it. and while the series is still going, one of the more recent games even got ported to Switch of all things, I haven't been super up to date on it.
I played all three Last Stand games, and they were all solid. The third one was pretty divergent from the previous two. It was a 2d side scrolling semi-open world survival game, where you were traveling on foot through various areas, looting houses and other buildings for food, supplies, and weapons. It even had a leveling and skill system.
Despite being less like the first two, it's arguably the best of the three.
I love your videos man. Your voice is easy to listen to and the videos have a good simplicity to them. I have them running in the background while I play video games or something but I really enjoy your stuff. Keep it up bro.
Glad you talked about The Day, had been thinking about it recently but couldn't remember enough to find anything
4 seconds into the video and I didn't think I'd see a beloved old classic. I'd play that dragon game for hours when I was younger!
The last stand got ported to Roblox and has been on there for a very long time, at least 8-9 years, maybe more. Idk if it’s by the same person, or someone else, but it’s pretty close to the original and was my favorite childhood Roblox game
Animal Puncher has a dark sense of humour. It's a good parody of youth psychopathy, and non of the wild animals, barring maybe the bear & wolf, would approach a human IRL; so it's comical to me in that sense too. I like it for daring to satirize a difficult subject.
yeah it's actually pretty well done especially considering the ending. it makes you wonder if the animals helped you cover up the incident. i knew a kid like eric growing up (not to the extent of his psychopathy of course) they did a really good job portraying the apathy of the main character at first. that apathy turns into discomfort which eventually leads to doing something about it.
Brought back so many memories playing dark cut and last stand on my shitty windows XP laptop back in like 2009. I love you man, definitely gonna need more of these kinds of videos
i seriously love your content! it's super nice having your videos on while i'm drawing or gaming :-] your style of commentary is so relaxing and super casual, it feels like i'm having one of my friends infodump to me hahaha. this one was especially interesting because i've never heard of any of these games. great as always!!
omg I know you from twitter I love your art
I love your videos, they have the same vibe of hanging out and talking to your friends. Never change your mic (Not to be too parasocial)
I remember a few horror flash games: Free Ice Cream, Vorago, and the Alice is Dead series. Vorago was my favorite. It was a game about Armageddon.
Damn I haven't thought about Alice is Dead in years
The most wierd thing about dark cut wasn't the game itself, it was that the guy who made it, jmtb02, was mainly known for very light-hearted, child-friendly, satirical games that were amoung the more popular flash games: namely, he made all the "Blue Elephant" games like _This is the only Level_ and Achievement Unlocked . I played alot of his stuff as a kid but the Dark Cut stuff always made me unsure of the guy.
there was this game i played as a kid with bloody mary in it, and all i remember from it now was that her head emerges from behind a curtain in the end and then it cuts to a black screen. it was very simple and kinda wonky but it traumatised me for years!
man flash games were the best, i used to love playing a bunch of them as a kid. i wish they never killed flash 💔😭 great video btw!
OH MY GOD THANK YOU
The Day is a game I played when I was like, 7? And I've had the memory of it pop into my mind over and over through the years, but tonight I just HAD to find it. Spent the last like 3 hours searching through multiple search engines, flash game sites (went on the 'card game' section of armor games, THEY DIDNT EVEN SHOW IT THERE) hell I even tried ChatGPT to try finding it, it just sent me on a wild goose chase for a name that no game was ever titled. But jesus the first second of the vid where you showed it i KNEW that was the one. Holy hell thank you so so much.
No matter what gane you play or what topic you cover, i always find you so interesting. Highly underrated youtuber.
great vid, miss the innocent days of playing flash games filled with horrors beyond my comprehension
Seeing how to raise a dragon in the intro took me right back in time playing on my old family's computer
Dark cut is a blast from the past! Literally gave me a nostalgia bomb i could never remeber the name of it, remember playing it on my grandparents old computers
The speed at which my mouse moved to click this video caused a sonic boom.
The Day's ending is fuckin awesome I like that twist
I know right?
really agree!! Id never heard of the game before, but really loved learning about it :P
Anyone else remember the series of flash games called Darkness? Those games were so freaky to me as a kid that I haven't gone back to play them for like 15 years.
Sometimes I feel like when I'm falling asleep, I'll hear a "random" tune playing in my head and it seems familiar but idk where it comes from/what it is.
The music for that game "Dark Cut" is definitely one of those songs for me, It's such a vibe and gets stuck in my head (esp after playing it OVER AND OVER again as a child) but yet that's the only place I've heard it and once I grew up and flash shut down then It obv led to me kinda abandoning that game and with it, the music. Only to be a distant memory that gets cropped back up years later from a youtube video... crazy how this world works..
I think the only one of these I remember is The Day. I was about 14 years old and I was just looking for something to play on Armor Games, would up coming across it. This one stuck with me more than most other Flash games did. I played a few of the creator’s other games, they never quite stuck with me the same way, but the one’s I do remember were still really interesting.
I miss Flash.
weird how I keep coming across the creator of that game (and keep forgetting their name;; )
I once found "the majesty of color" at random, really made an impression on me since I wasn't too good at english back then
then one day I went soul-searching and stubled across the creator's website and found out I've played some of their games before
i never played scary flash games, but i remember some really good games, like arcuz, treasure of cutlass reef, and then one i used to play frequently but couldn't find again in the flashpoint archive. i believe it was called hex battles or something like that. i mostly know it by the german name "die schlecht im sechseck" (which was very likely a spelling error of "schlacht")
now i'm kind of interested in playing last stand 2 and the day
Yeah, there were some awesome flash games. And yes, flashpoint doesn’t have everything unfortunately.
If nobody else has mentioned it, Orange Roulette is almost certainly a reference to The Deer Hunter from 78
Its still really wild that the same guy who made a series of games about medieval surgery did the blue elephant games like achievment unlocked and this is the only level
i love ur videos they're so relaxing
Oh my lord, every time I hear End of Small Sanctuary it is like the floor beneath me just disappears and I fall into this nostalgic void of melancholy where memories demand introspection and I feel both calmness or safety and a sense of despair or loss.
How to raise a dragon was my favorite too, as I LOVE dragons. I hate the troupe of them being inherently evil. I love also how you can have more than firebreath as I've always love that concept. Also I tried SO HARD to get the colour I wanted for them via mixing colours
I remember playing this torture flash game as a kid that haunts me to this day. I've tried looking for it again, but all I can find is this weird ragdoll one on newgrounds that isn't the same. It had this almost naked man sitting in a chair I think, with a big pale bald head and a surprisingly detailed face. You had all these torture tools and it was weirdly realistic, and the guy would scream and cringe. no idea if it still exists to this day, but as a 12 year old it freaked me the fuck out.
Awesome video. Loved the background music. Always have a blast watching your videos!
I can't believe Newgrounds gave us Buckshot Roulette 20+ years ago
If im remembering correctly, I think the developers for cod zombies on world at war said Last Stand was a big inspiration for them
Woah really?? That’s kinda sick
The flash game era of the internet was basically the wild west.
Interesting to see Hero's Adventure here. That game was made by Terry Cavanaugh, known for some 2010s-era indie darlings like VVVVV, Super Hexagon and (more recently) Dicey Dungeons. They're all great games, but he also does a lot of smaller web games and they're pretty good stuff too. Definitely worth checking out. One of his smaller web games, Tiny Heist, is still decently popular on CoolMath - I remember that one was my go-to in the computer lab back in highschool.
Love your narration, wish youtube hadnt waited this long to let me know you uploaded again.
Seeing this video and some of the top comments, I am so glad I am not the only one who remembers The Day!
One thing that got to me as a kind was the audio that played when your in the abandoned facility. The gargled voices amongst the harsh static. Its always stuck with me. Granted, that might just be a me thing because I am more likely to be unnerved by creepy audio than by creepy imagery.
Love ya Dialko, stay safe. Happy Holidays!
i stumbled across Dark Cut as a kid and it really freaked me out, but ofc it's not nearly as realistic as i remember and that vampire at the end is just goofy 😂 still pretty intense for a kid tho!
I think the Submachine games were always my favourite spooky flash games... I don't remember if anything scary ever actually happened in them but they all had this incredibly oppressive atmosphere. Alas my child brain was too small to ever finish any of them 🥹
I always confuse those apocalypse survival games with the Don't Escape ones.
this was a fun video. felt like i was on a phone call w a friend reminiscing about old games. forgot about some of these games + creators!
I love how chill this video is. It feels like listening to a friend.
Babe wake up! Dialko posted!
awesome video!!
Really enjoyed this video, brought me back to my childhood, some simpler times, but as kid these games were dreadfull. I would love to see another video on the same topic! My personal favorite flash horror game used to be Vorago, definitely check it out!
I can’t remember the name of it now, but there was this one flash game that really stuck with me. You played as these two skeleton rabbits that were trying to escape a tower, and to do so you had to explore, find a blue door, and beat the minigame on the other side. I made it to the final level, couldn’t find the blue door, and quit out of fear because the soundtrack sounded like someone was coming. It was executed fairly well, if I say so myself :)
Jinx and Minx?
Legit surprised Covetous wasn't on here
Yeah, that would have been a good one, but mainly I stuck to games I played in the past. There are honestly sooo many flash games worth talking about; if this video does well I might make sequels
A fun fact about The Last Stand, apparently it was one of the inspiration the Zombies Mode in CoD
I love your “reminiscing” videos
Nitrome was it for me personally so many good games I was bad at it still feels like the future in some weird way
I was a really squeamish "child" (I was a young teen by then I think) and Dark Cut made me soooo upset that I'd get nauseous even when I heard the music playing from my brother's room when he was playing
I found "The Day" to be very interesting for some reason. I have not played it but from what was said and shown in the video I get the impression that maybe the Dad (and possibly the other adults) knew about the outside world and wanted to keep everyone inside to hide them from the truth? Also how did the Dad know that the Uncle is dead if the Uncle's body just laid in the facility and (at least according to this video) was shot by the security system or something. I think the Dad may have gone out on his own at some point (possibly with the Uncle at the same time) and came to the realization himself. I also have thoughts about the playing cards, who exactly made them...? Again, I have this idea that the Dad or someone who saw the outside world made these playing cards to distract people from trying to leave the village and discovering the reality of their situation.
Great game, great video, would love to see more great things from you in the future!
Also really enjoyed that game! Really wish I could delve more into it! God bless ya and Jesus loves ya!
There was this flash game I played as a kid where you kidnapped, hunted down, and BRUTUALIZED the power puff girls. There were three games that went by, "Kill bubbles", "Kill blossom", "Kill buttercup" in that order. Buttercup's game was the hardest, and these games were literally sick, hella edgy, and not really funny just kinda interesting cuz who tf made this crazy shit (dudes been inactive on new grounds since he made the games)
I remember these too! The one that stuck out to me the most was the Bubbles one. I don’t recall all of it but I remember having to lure her outside with the sound of a dog barking to kidnap her, and then at some point you shave her head for some reason lol.
Literally the first game you discuss and I've already had a nostalgia orgasm
If you like dark cut you'd probably really like atlus' trauma center series- they're a similar type of game focused on you playing as a surgeon and performing operations. The games do get a little fantastical but the surgery itself is fairly grounded- if you're ok with the ridiculousness of a lot of medical drama shows you'll be able to handle it
the first game on ds even has a flash feel (to me, at least) because of the art being the most 2005 possible style
you used how to raise a dragon in the intro ;w; that was my fav flash game and no one talks about it!!
BABE WAKE UP, NEW DIALKO VIDEO DROPPED LET'S GOOOO
The last Last Stand game is very different and is fantastic.
You should also check out the Ex Mortis trilogy. Back in the day it was considered the peak of flash horror.
Your videos feel like a holiday gift! Always worth the wait! God bless ya and Jesus loves ya!
DUDE I FUCKING LOVED THE DRAGON GAME AS A KID!!! I replayed that one so many different times to see all the outcomes
>what kinda psychopath would run around slaughtering boars for hours?
bro please, hog hunting is not a psychopathic thing 😭
I remember there was a fairly obscure* series of flash games called _Submachine_ that I liked as a kid, as it managed to have an unsettling vibe without having any jump-scares or disturbing content (that I remember). The games themselves weren't too interesting, I mean they were just generic point-and-click escape-the-rooms: what I found interesting was how they used surrealism to create a certain atmosphere. It wasn't clear what the 'room' was or why you were trying to escape it, or what 'escaping it' even meant. I never finished the series, so i don't know how it ended - maybe in retrospect the whole thing is cheesy. But at such a young age, those kind of "surreal point-and-clicks" (of which there were many) was my first introduction to "liminal space" that would later catch on in many successful indie games (to name a random example, _Minecraft_ ).
*EDIT: so I looked it up and it turns out _Submachine_ was actually pretty popular and developed a cult following.
The last stand union city is my absolute favorite in the series. It takes a more "open world" approach and its soooooo goood
22:30 oh I love this kind of twist! A few years ago I read a book called the ash house (spoilers for the book btw) and basically these kids were living in this abandoned experiment and have been left there to look after themselves. And the best part is that you find this out pretty far into the book because even the kids don’t know this.
omg Dark Cut was a blast from the past I'd completely forgotten about until this video, it was one of the games I'd watch my childhood bestie play bc I was to chickenshit to do it myself (tbf I was just generally anxious about games that put any type of pressure or [heh] stakes on the player no matter how wholesome it looked)
PLEASE COVER MORE, early years was crazy all the strange games
0:04 i must have played this dragon game dozens of times as a kid. I loved the hell out of it. Seeing it again so long after the fact gave me some heavy duty nostalgia
you were in my top 5 in youtube gaming recap
okay so I'm a blonde dude with blue eyes who is also a glasses-wearing poindexter who is ALSO named Eric.
Is this a coincidence or?????? Before you ask, no, I have never once punched an animal lol. this flash game is slandering me lmao
Covetous is the only Flash game that stuck with me for how much it shocked me as an early teenager.
It's not necessarily even really graphic, it resembles some old Atari 2600 game in graphical fidelity, but the implications of the game and it's story mixed with the droning audio have made it impossible to forget.
First time when I played orange roulette and the music and fan started tweaking scared me so much.
Also the 3rd last stand is such a good survival game. It's a sidescroller looter survival
if you ever decide to do another video about these sorts of eerie flash games, i'd recommend one called 'babies dream of dead worlds'
it's one i played as a kid that has always stuck with me.
We played some messed up and weird flash games back in the early 2000s
one of my childhood hidden gems is this newgrounds flash game called 'quietus' -- its a little 2d pixel platformer where you have to make your way through different screens, all set in hell after you die. the music is fucking banging but ive never finished the game because it was too hard as the levels went on. i would kill for someone to make a video on it because there is something so truly epic but uncomfortable about quietus that has stayed in my brain since i was playing it at like 6 years old
