  • My wife and I recently toured Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and architecture school in Spring Green, Wisconsin. I share some pictures and thoughts about what I observed from the perspective of a woodworker.

    Thank you!
    Well done.
I first encountered his school/home around the late '60s.
The "tour" protocol was quite relaxed and we were allowed to just wander around and told to ask if we had any questions.
I was born and raised in the Milwaukee, Wi area.
    It was fascinating.

Thank you. I appreciate your perspective of the materials and wear. It speaks to the integral conundrum of much of his work... built for use, as HE would use it or wanted it to be used. Your views enhance some of the other videos I've seen, and as I am also tall, I appreciate your comments on those aspects of his designs as well.

I have NEVER heard one of his past students ever speak negatively of FLW. The commune living structure must have made them feel like family. In turn, great memories and an incredible experience. I’ve toured the SW location in the desert. This year finally I will tour the Spring Green WI location as I bought a motorcycle and what a great place to ride to from our home in N. IL.

I enjoyed your video,I'm a big fan of FLW. My wife and I toured Taliesin West outside of Scottsdale back in March. If you have not been there, your description of the North location exactly fits the SW version. At the SW location there was a large part of the main structure that you can not tour on 2nd and 3rd floor as "Legacy" members are living out their lives there which I found very interesting. Many are artists and fellow designers,
Thanks for posting this video. We live just North of Rockford IL so the Wisconsin location is not far and we look forward to going there soon.

Thanks for your comment! I would very much like to tour some of FLW's other buildings. Luckily there's quite a few around Wisconsin and Illinois. It's probably around 2 hours from where you live, so definitely would check it out when you get the chance.

Brian Hilson Well Brian, here I am four years later since my comment and your reply. Stumbled across your video again and watched it then realized I’d commented years ago. Finally 3 weeks ago My Wife & I drove 1 hr 40 min to Spring Green and did the tour only of his person home and personal design studio at Taliesin North. We also drove into the village there and saw the exterior of the big church he designed there in later years. Also about one year ago we went to a gymnastics event for one of the kids in the huge convention center, Monona Terrace on the Shore downtown Madison. We ran all over that building and could spot key features attributed to FLW. Also have toured the only local FLW home here in Rockford IL called the Laurent House. Park district owns it by receiving it in the home owner’s will. They took 3 years to install an entire new roof and fix up a lot of staining. Was the only FLW home designed for a person in a wheelchair. The local guy was great friends with FLW and worked for AMROCK. A big local manufacturer that makes hardware items. Many of those items over the year for homes such as the long piano Hinges FLW used on most cabinet drawers as well as many other drawer pulls ,hinges, and gadgets. I enjoy your video as well as so many other video tours etc. About FLW. I had years of drafting. Oh my Gosh. Gotta go to Falling Water Next.

Curious, but feel it’s dated in ways that imposes it’s self on the human beings. Not so user friendly. The massing seems a bit forced , and other elevations can’t be improved on.

Interesting perspective, thanks. Did you get to use a FLW bathroom?

The drafting roof design is not unique. It's a common design for natural light in factories.

Much of the wood was from his farm... plywood was a modern material at that time not previously available ... much of the structural wood was left unfinished...
