- As we lose wild species at an unprecedented rate, we must take action to preserve our critically important wildlife. My career as a wildlife biologist has led me everywhere from the high arctic of Alaska to the deserts of Africa, and I have seen firsthand many of the threats facing wildlife. There are many challenges to wildlife conservation, but the incredible efforts of biologists to conserve threatened species can give us hope. As a wildlife biologist, his focus has been on bear species and he has primarily worked with polar and black bears for the past 8 years. During that time Wes also has been able to assist on a number of other wildlife conservation efforts for species such as African wild dogs, American alligators, golden eagles, spotted eagle rays, northern elephant seals, American kestrels, etc. His work has taken him everywhere from the Arctic to Africa, and he believes that wildlife conservation is not only essential for the preservation of the world's animals, but also for the continuation of the human spirit. Getting people to realise that we must shed the false romanticism of things that are damaging to our planet and its creatures.
Create new traditions that aid and beautify. Not massacre and harm.
We remain "human" because of animals. We should be showing our appreciation a lot more graciously than we have been.

I can relate to his pain when I saw how fireflies near my childhood home have declined in population over the years. I remember the joy and aw of seeing them hundreds shining up my backyard to becoming a depressing find to only see two or three that bright up the lonely night.
Same with bees and ladybugs i swear there were way more when I was 5
The only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday.
Essential people doing critical role to prevent some of the most critically endangered animals extinct ... god bless you.

we are living in a cautious time. our generation has alot of things to be worried about. But yes, you are right, the situation is grim. I wish I could be more optimistic if it weren't for the fact that I'm guilty of falling into the pleasure trap.
Educating the whole world is essential - getting everyone to understand and acknowledge the significance of the natural world and how we fit in as human beings ie. A species of animal. And why we need to protect and conserve natural habitats for wildlife and ourselves.

“I think we’ve failed as the most intelligent beings on earth if we let these species fail.” This is so true. I really don’t understand why some people simply don’t care.
What he said about evolution taking millions of years to craft these things and we’re basically just letting them die. This is another point that hit home for me. And aside from all the grief of losing species, every single species serves a purpose. It can ruin an ecosystems delicate balance if one important creature goes extinct, and even though we remove ourselves as far from the natural world as we possibly can, we are still a part of the natural world. We still rely on the food chain, and for nature to be in balance. I want to make as many changes as I personally can, and we just need as many people as possible to do that.

I’d love to see the popular biology techs and instragrammers like this guy Promote less charismatic wildlife species as well. Pandas are going to go extinct after spending billions and billions of dollars on them that could’ve been spent on many more, less cute species. Also conservation should not be focused on anthropocentric ideals like “being in nature;” it needs to be focused on what he said initially, restoring ecosystems to historic conditions. Good work so far though.
I do not particularly disagree with what you’ve stated here. However, it is a fact; over time the only thing consistent on the planet is change. Whether humans were ever here or not, change itself is constant. Within the context of that fact, why should conservation be focused on restoring ecosystems to historic conditions? Which era’s conditions should be restored? Though it sounds facetious, I am being sincere.
More charismatic animals help get in more donations which then goes towards less attractive animals as well

If we want the human race to continue for a longer time, without people dying of asthma in Beijing and Delhi, or without flooding in various places due to melting glaciers; we have to do this
Regarding African painted dogs, the main reason for their declining population is due to farmers poaching the dogs as they suspect the dogs are the reason for their livestock dying, as opposed to their horrible ranching practices. Please don’t refer to them as Wild Dogs but rather Painted Dogs as that is their proper name “lycaon pictus” meaning “painted wolf-dog” :)

We are part of the world. Caring about the world in general includes us. Not caring about the world in general, is *not* caring about humanity. A person cannot destroy one and claim to care at all for the other. It is important to elect politicians who care, period. The environment, plants, animals, insects and humans are all connected, whether we like it, want it, or not. As for what politicians care or not, some do care far far more than others.
If all those foreigners would stop cutting down trees we might see some progress.

@@demonorse Hello, in America we replant the trees that are harvested. In other countries, foriegn, they clear cut and destroy the environment. If you are cool with deforestation then you have an opportunity to discover that is a bad thing.
@@Exodus26.13Pi Dude, there are many other countries where the percentage of land covered by forest is mandated in their constitution. In Michigan any replanting done is with jackpine, it grows fast and can be cut again in 20 years. We have 2% of our original old growth left. Fly from Detroit to Kansas City and look out the window, there are no forests. I got property in Michigan, private landowners are the only hope for our remaining forest.

This is a wonderful thing, but countries like China are a major problem and most likely will not change. If the nuclear waste issue is not taken care of, waste sitting all over the place that is above ground, highly radioactive for 10,000 to 250,000 years, it belongs in a deep underground repository not sitting around nuke plants with nowhere to put it. It could make America uninhabitable for 10,000 years or more. Any environmental plan must include this issue. These sights all over the US in my opinion could be battle and or terrorist targets. It's very serious.

You can't know whether they were laughing about the word "malnourished" or not. I don't if you ever have been to a TEDx event but TEDx vienna lasts for around 10-12 hours. no human can concentrate for that long and listen to every talk with a 100% dedication. It is very well possible that they were talking about sth else and not the talk. You shouldn't jugde based on assumptions
