That's awesome! I'm jealous! haha Ummm, I'd suggest playing a bunch of single player games then. I love the story in games like Assassin's Creed and Fall Out games for example. Beautiful cutscenes and story lines go a long way to make a beautiful game better.
That's awesome. Have you ever tried Virtual Reality gaming? Build a PC that can handle Virtual Reality and buy the Oculus s. The experience is amazing.
@Evolution Because I overplayed them. For many years I would play these old games on an every day basis. Now I'm playing VR games on steam like vox machinae vr which is very awesome.
As I get older, I don't get 'worse' at some things, those things just don't interest me anymore. Extreme competitiveness is exhausting, mentally and physically, and when I was younger, I loved it. Now it just feels like work. I use games to enjoy myself, and I simply don't enjoy competitive gaming anymore.(I am 35 years old)
I'm 25 and these days when I play games it doesn't give me the same satisfaction or pure joy as they once did, even with new games. I'll play them and get bored after 20 minutes when in the past I could play for hours and hours. I think I've just outgrown video games, when I loved them I had no adult responsibilities, now I have a job, bills to pay, a girlfriend etc. I'm becoming my dad lmfao.
F Dannn dude, same here. I'm younger but I just don't get the same wonder feeling when playing a new game I can't play themcmore than 2 hours Either...it's honestly depressing haha.
It also doesn't help when you know WHY things happen in videogames, whether it was setup by the developers or it's a quirk in the game's code, being a kid and totally ignorant of how games are made meant that everything you saw in games was just as cool, or even cooler than the real world.
Nah, its the games man, they suck now. I suggest you download and engine and start making your own game that you always wanted to play. I'm 28, and I am definitely becoming my dad as well. How are you coping?
Older gamers have had the amazing experience of seeing games evolve - from Space Invaders and Pac-man, to the hyper real 4k experiences of today. What a journey!
Dang that is so true! That is why even to this day I can comfortably play 16 bit games without completely losing interest from dated graphics. I've been playing games since Atari and 2D 16 bit games with modern special effects still look perfectly playable to me. As long as the game is actually fun I'll still play almost anything.
You got that right, dude! My first video game addiction was Crazy Climber. Even after all of the quarters that I put into the game in the arcades, I never was very good at it. I almost never made it to the 3rd building, in fact.
+PlayableGamez All good points. And some people relax by competing. I'm just not one of them. Well, I am, but against a computer that I have power over with difficulty levels, mods, etc. I have fun gaming and that level of concentration is what distracts me. Competing wouldn't distract me and make me relaxed. I think they are right that is a big part of why older players aren't as 'good', we have different goals . In The amount of time it would take me to be good enough to make 50k or a mil or whatever, I could earn in my day job, lol.
You're missing his point. He is saying that if you want to relax FOR REAL, you can't play video games, because that'll activate your brain. If you want to shut it down, you can watch TV though ;)
+AldjinnTV You're missing the point, he said the relaxation I feel isn't my brain turning off. The relaxation part is the important part for mr. The 'turning my brain off' is just an expression. Technically speaking your brain is never off.
Ron Theel I see, it's more you getting rid of all the stress of life because you're focused on the video game then right ? Also, just for the story, I heard your brain is ALMOST off when you're watching porn. I know technically it is never off (it even stays on for a short time after death, that's amazing !); but the closest it gets to being off is when watching porn. (I realize this has nothing to do with the topic but I just learned about that and this was the opportunity this great knowledge :D)
@@kimblarry When you're older and have a decent job, you can make that same USD $30-50K (or more). You get more strategic with your time - why put in hundreds of hours for a mere chance at payoff, when you can make that money reliably, with way less effort (even if you have a hard job, the longer you work, the better at the job you become).
@Hollow Shell That's not my attitude at all, it's just a fact. Adults with responsibilities don't have a lot of time to invest in a video game. So how can they be as good as someone who consistently plays and practices a lot more? I'm not trying to say that video games are an immature pastime, I'm saying that younger people probably don't have to meet deadlines at work, pick their kids up from school (assuming they don't have any), or have a marriage/relationship to nurture. How long do these pro gamers play for? 6-8 hours at a time - everyday? Maybe more? Well, it's no wonder they're good. I'm sure aging has something to do with the rate at which your reaction time decreases (depends on your genetics) but Occam's razor here tells me they just practice a ton more.
@Hollow Shell I don't think that adults are "too mature" to play games. But they don't have the free time to put into them to make it to elite status. I am in my 50's, like to play games, but only get to for a few hours on the weekends. Maybe. I have to maintain my house, be a caregiver to an elderly parent, manage the finances for two households, and spend time with my kid (which is often when I get to play). It's that responsible adults just have too much to do to invest the time in games. I def think there is a slow down in reaction time as you get older, but that some could maintain it if they stay in practice.
Hey folks! I'm well aware that there are prize pools much larger than $50K for other tournaments. I was referring to the SC2 prizes for Dreamhack in Austin, but I misspoke and made it sound like I was talking about tournaments in general. Sorry for the mistake, and thanks for catching that!
Did you tell what's his name, (weight lifting white caster guy), that he was wrong TO HIS FACE about "older players getting faster." haha jk But seriously, I think it is interesting that the awards/greatest discoveries in mathematics, seem to always come from 17-21 year olds, in physics from 21 to 26 year olds, and + for chemistry, and ++ biology.... There is definitely something going on there. Great video. Surprised you didn't interview whitera, the 30+ Russian gamer, but maybe he's retired now haha.
Is that so? I think selective memory is at work there, because most of discoveries in physics are from older people. Just take a look at nobel prize laureates and when they made the discovery. In fact, older people are by definition better at physics, chemistry and mathematics because they have more knowledge and experience, and in these fields brain lag does not matter at all.
Older players don't care much. That's the difference. Things that activate adrenaline in games doesn't do that anymore as we grow older. I remember feeling the rush while playing mobas and FPS games back in the day but now, it's almost impossible. At the back of my mind, I don't really care about games anymore.
I think a good story is what drives me the most at age 37. Certainly I rarely feel like I did when I played Contra or Lifeforce with my cousin on the NES, but a great narrative in a universe I care about, like Jedi: Fallen Order, was really exciting.
I'm glad, but also not glad that i don't get that adrenaline as easily from games anymore. I'm glad because i can think clearer in high intensity situations, but at the same time i kind of miss getting that amped by playing a game.
Can you imagine sitting in your computer chair for 10 hours a day only getting up to eat and piss, and that's your free time? I know young men who do this, every single day.
The summer of 2003, I didn't have a job lined up. I had made quite a bit of surplus cash in the previous year, so I tried an "experiment" ... I spent most of my waking hours in the attic, playing Morrowind and Vice City. No regrets.
Same story here. I couldn't even speak English when I was 12. I was hopeless in English classes. Then I got my first English game (Warcraft 3 and Rayman 3) and all of a sudden my knowledge in English took of and today I have it as second language.
I'm 86 and I'm playing now more than ever, since I'm retired, I have all the time in the world. My favorite game to play is CS GO and I'm Sheriff on competitive mode there.
I'm 64 years young and I play video games every day. And I can hold my own in every PvP game I play be it Destiny or COD or Halo. I don't win all the time, or even a lot, but I do win sometimes. And all my friends and co-workers know that I'm a Gamer. QuietBillG is my gamer id on both Playstation and Xbox Live.
That`s the way to go. That proofs that not everyone has an urge to be ultraconservative and act and behave exactly like people of the same age. Do what you like and what you have fun with.
I been gaming all my life. I noticed when I had too many things going on I would lose some interest on gaming even going a week without it. But now that I have my bachelors ( no economical problems) and always try to never bring work home I game more than ever. My theory is that you don’t outgrew gaming you just don’t have time or maybe a genre that you liked before but is not the same anymore.
I stopped gaming when I started college many years ago and got busy working. Now I went back and just got my bachelors, I’ve been getting into it more this year. Especially because of COVID, I’m not working and had a lot more time on my hands than usual.
Most hyped games are like that. But there are many great indie games out there. Hollow Knight, Steamworld Dig 2, etc. that play like the good old games.
Exactly. Even in racing games. Before all you had to do was choose a car and drive, now you have to work a lot to collect cards, blueprints, unlock boosters, parts etc It is ridiculous and even worse on mobile.
An overly simplistic reduction of an entire medium. There are many different types of games which over a huge variety of experiences. Co-op games can create memorable experiences with friends and family. Educational games can teach kids math or languages. Games can be used for training. They can tell stories or make us think in new ways. Not every game is about "farming", not by a long shot.
that is mmorpg...... here.. playing my current game.. itbis starting to become a job.. stressfull.. I am contemplating to go online and use up my stamina... or feel guilty coz I did not go online today.. I wanna quit.. but it makes me guilty.. i
+Moonsover326, Nope. No. Not even. I like my toys and my games and everything else I've enjoyed over the years and you can't make me "grow up." Neither can anyone else... if my wife couldn't make me do it, I doubt anyone else can. I'm an adult now and I don't have to live by the "rules" of society. I am as young (at least mentally) as I choose to be. And I can play any game I wish (as long as I have a friend that has the game or I have the $ to buy it myself). Only losers and angry old men outgrow their toys. I learned a long time ago that anger was not for me. And I really don't like to lose (even when I do so quite often). I am nearly 56 years old, biologically. Maybe 12 or 22 mentally, depending on mood and current object of mental consideration and contemplation. Meditation and introspection can do that to you. :D
StarCraft II is a relatively new game, which means that older players are not going to have an advantage of having extra years of experience playing it.
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky Brood War experience helps you in SC2 (APM wise SC2 is a easy version of SC1, as SC2 helps the player more because it is a newer game), and as such SC2 is not a new game anymore. It is 6 years old, which is old i a video games lifespand. A lot of skill StarCraft, Command & Conquer, League of Legends, DotA etc. (actually all esports) is understanding the core mechanics and mastering you adaptation to them. Such as stutter stepping with perfect timing, having a natural feel for in game timings (that is especially true in a game such as Quake, where you have to exactly meet the timings of the larger armours, to win) so you can process your scouting data, and hotkey use so you can effectively cycle between production and control groups at as fast a speed as possible to optimize micro and macro. And of course improving APM/EMP is something that takes a lot of practise and is as much a physical as a mental challenge. So no, SC2 is not something new based of new things. It is the present day optimisation of a development in game design going back around 20 years (if not more). And also having played the game for 100 hours or 500 hours makes a huge difference. With a statement such as yours I seriously doubt you play any competitive multi-player games at any level, as you would then know you time scale is completely off, and how just a game being out for a year can be an eternity in the development of the meta (and then factor balance patches into that equation to, and that things change constantly, and you have to constantly adapt, but also retain all the old strategies, so you have something to fall back on, when you are at a loss - an example would be the mantra for Protoss of "when behind, dark shrine"). There was actually a lot of interesting things going on, when an older Brood War pro came into SC2, as they to a degree played in a different way to the younger players who where to young to be Brood War pros. But to be perfectly honest, at the moment SC2 is such an old game that it in many ways is slowly dying as more people leave, then new blood coming in, so it has in many ways become a small die hard community of people who love the game, but most would actually like to at some point get a new real AAA RTS, because SC2 is dated. But EA does not seem to understand how to make C&C games, and nothing has been said about WarCraft 4 (because WoW and the film probably), so it is a bit of an odd situation right now. But if you truly think StarCraft II is something that could be described as a new game, then you really need to learn more about gaming...
+movement2contact DotA was a very popular mod long before StarCraft II came out... League of Legends came out before SC2... It has not been dying to MOBA, it has been dying of old age. While DotA and LoL are older games there are so many more options, as champions and items are upgraded and the sheer number of heros you can play makes it a lot harder for meta to go completely stale, which it easily does in SC2 as Blizzard have been ruining the game by making excessive micro focussed to a point, where there is in many scenarios only one logical option that can lead you to success, where there used to be several (unless of course you are a Korean GM...).
+bloodlazio league came out AFTER starcraft 2, I also disagree with your point. For someone that has and does play both games, starcraft 2 is an extremely complex game, but when you look at it with no knowledge of whats going on, it looks simple. In my opinion starcraft 2 is much more difficult in almost every aspect. However league is also a very complex game and I do not think either game significantly trumps another, however, mechanically, I think starcraft surpasses league immensly. Coupled with the extreme complexity I think there are definitely more "options" than league. Its pretty crazy what these top sc2 players are doing, it looks easy enough, but trust me, that statement is far from the truth.
Seriously? Look it up... LoL 2009, SC2 2010. I played both back then, and I still do... The complexity you are referring to is in 1v1, but SC2 has for a long time been having issues with stale meta, and LotV has actually done the complete opposite of the intention and made it even harder to do alternative strategies. The APM skill is completely different from strategy and meta option. As League and DotA does not have 2, but 10 players and around a 100 or so races, then the composition options and build combination make the options for alternative strategies a lot more complex, than PvZ and i guess I am building adepts, because I do not like losing. That has nothing to do with the challenge of the game, but is a matter of the complexity of the meta. Both games require a lot of concentration to be any good, but in League you can get carried by the team... No such luck in SC2 :) The lack of a team can also make laddering harder for some, as they feel completely alone and demoralised by getting crushed by a better player, while MOBAs can make balanced teams of good and bad players on both sides.
I'm 56, been playing video games since I was 13 and have had the honor of being a game developer for 26 years. It has been an incredible ride, video games like all other forms of mass entertainment will wax and wane but they'll never completely fade away. Older gamers may play less but they'll still join in with their kids and grandkids on special days. Games have become more sophisticated to match the demands of their players, but their central goal is to entertain. People will always need that.
I think it's also a question of growing up. The older we get, the more we realise actions have consequences. We react slowlier because we are afraid of the possible outcome. Games are games, we know it's not real, but part of the mindset comes from there, from the "careful what you do, lest you have to pay for it". Later on, the think before you act becomes such an habit that we actually become slow. This is probably why it is best to learn to play a instrument or to learn a language or to learn a sport when you're young: your mind has fewer self-imposed double-checks. Or I am entirely wrong and scientists are laughing at my comment.
I think the same, I would even go further, just a simple theory : imagine the brain is like an hard drive, at some point you have limited space to store data, you have to make space, so you pick the most important elements. For example, you won't remember the weather 5 days ago but you will remember the meeting you have in 5 days. I'm really amazed by the memory of my children (3yo and 5yo). When I play video games in front of them, they remember so many details, even after not playing for a few weeks. Details that I had forgotten because I think my (subconscious) brain somehow decided it was not worth taking space in my brain for that information while their brain has not that need (yet). I think it probably explains somehow why time seems to be going faster as you get older : because you don't record all that day in your brain but just the most important parts so when you think about your day, during that day, it does not seem as long because you have not recorded as long/much. This being said, I think it's just a partial answer. I think the cause are probably multiples and that unfortunately, we face a kind of cognitive deterioration as we get older that make it worst.
@@jean-phil You are on to something. There are studies that show that chimps can memorize long serial sequences, at glance, and the theory as to why this is, is because they do not need to use that same space in their brains, for linguistics. This applies to your youthful brain theory. A young brain has more empty space, so more trivial items are memorized by youth. ...my favorite Sherlock Holmes quote fits this theory also. Watson: "Holmes, how can you possibly not know that Uranus is a planet?! You must have learned this at some point!" Holmes: "Many men think the mind is an "elastic room", they fill it to the brim, and expect to expand. ...I believe the mind is like an an attic. A man can rearrange the furniture in it, but at the end of the day there is finite space, so I only fill mine with my interests, and ignore the rest." ... In that same book, Watson remarked that Holmes was a masterful botanist. ...but only for the plants that killed people (Nightshade, etc.).
The title is misleading, you can never be too old for videogames. The question this video REALLY answers is: Do older brains exhibit lower processing power and reaction time than younger brains in games where quick multitasking is a major advantage at the highest level of competition?
When I read this title I knew exactly what it meant (what you described), it didn't misleading me. But i can understand someone can assume, are they too old to play video games..
I am 48 and started playing with Atari 'Pong' and have never stopped. On my gravestone it will say 'GAME OVER'..... or 'you died' (I like Resident Evil)
AoE Ronin, he's putting that "old adage" into action which says: "Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance." (Attributed to David Mamet).

Tony Boy Bad news: Employers even in 2017 don't look for that on a CV.
Even when I was younger in high school, my friends all loved the competitive online games whereas I preferred the single player story focused rpgs. I can take those at my own pace. They would make fun of me for exploring and talking to all the NPCs, smelling the roses etc instead of rushing thru to the next objective. Idk it's just what I like.
Well I'm 26 so I guess my life is over now. I'mma go practice yelling at kids to get off my lawn and complain about how the good ol' days were better when things were actually worse.
You kids don't know how good we used to have it. Voting for trump? Why back in my day we had heroes like... bill clinton, nevermind... we had George Bush... ok scratch that... but rest assured, this is the worst generation, right now. But to be honest. I do feel sorry that modern kids don't get all those dangerous and cool playground toys we had when I was in elementary.
Cretaal Back in my day we had real war not some skippy do hickey. We killed each other for sport and discriminated others for the kicks of it, ahhh that was the life.
Jack C the back keeps them from putting their back in to the swing. Remember how we got height? Sit up, kick out, lay back. If you can't lean back you don't get the momentum you need to do a Superman flying jump off of the swing. Heck, kids got hurt all the time doing that, I always just thought that was that whole "natural selection" everyone kept trying to teach me about. I never got hurt, and I did that flying jump to take down a bully once.
Doesn't necessarily mean you are slow compared to 25 year olds. I took a reaction time test, and at 25 years of old, going on 26 in Dec, it told me I probably wasn't human because my reaction time was too fast.
Boyd The Milkman Lol my reflexes are probably going to get better over time considering I can ketch things falling out of the fridge without even thinking now. compared to when i was 15 i'm like Neo. lol
im 30 and i dont play to be BETTER then anyone.. I also dont play the same game OVER AND OVER.. when i beat a game i move on to the next. I get bored fast.. I been playing games all my life..
It always depends what games you play. Some like to play MOBA Ranking, Some like to play only FPS. Some play random games. Some like to play RPG like me. Once you are done with the story , you move on to the next one. I dont play rpg again because you know the story already so for what you want to play it again.
just never start to play dota or ur screwed. i tryed to deinstall it once and reinstalled it after 5 minutes of sitting at my chair. i admire anyone who is able to quit dota. its worse then any drug.
I'm 57 this year and still game every day. but its all reflexes and type of game. now I'm older I play mmo because they are slower paced and speed if reaction hardly comes into it
If you take a reaction time speed, what are the results? I'm curious about how they would compare to mine at age 16. I get 223-227 ms on average (While I am super focusing)
That isn't much help either for me at least. I honestly just don't care as much as I used to. The older I get the less I play. I never have time and most games are meh these days anyway.
I'm 38 years old and my brain is too old for playing Nintendo games like those Mario games but I have moved on to the Sony PlayStation and then evolved to playing PC virtual reality games. My brain isn't too old to play video games, my brain evolved to have a greater interest in playing more advanced video games.
You peak at 24. So that means when your like 28 you will play like a teen? I've also seen other studies that say this doesn't start until 27. Also there are always some exceptions to the rule.
Exactly. I was a lot more experienced with games when i was 18. Hardly had any practice in years. How could i beat a kid whos at it like 4hrs a day. With nothing else on his mind?
My dad showed me starcraft broodwar when i was 7 and i loved the game and ended it. Then i showed him starcraft 2 and both of us play it until today (he's 40) Edit: R.I.P. totalbiscuit
I'm 25 and I can already understand why it might seem like younger players seem like they are designed to be better than older players. For one many of those kids are suburban kids who really did not have hard lives and could literally play 10-12 hour days. Some even 24 hours like man I've seen smash players devote their fucking lives to playing competitively. As you get older you realize you just want to have fun and play games. That's what it has always been really since we were children. Though I love games more than anyone I know. I know they really are not where my real talents lie. Maybe not necessarily always playing them but in fact helping make video games even better for all players. Life really is just the hardest video game. There is no reset button this system we are all playing.
yes , play videogames should be use to just have fun . i am not agree use that like a form of competition . there's something much import to do that invest 10 or 12 hours . in that time i could learn a lot a things
+minegame112 TB being TotalBiscuit, username TotalHalibut, a very good & smart gaming commentator and critic. He is very good at explaining deep flaws and successes in developer decisions regarding games and about explaining topics about gaming & TH-cam communities. He also focuses a lot on gaming reviews, first impressions, critiques, etc. in his "WTF is...[game title here]" series.
So, we're just going to ignore the mounds of studies that show that older, more experienced brains actually think faster and make better decisions? The only factor that explains young professional gamers is time, the ability to devote 10-12 hours per day on their profession. It's impossible to get into that field when you already have spouse, kids, job, etc. Teenagers and trust fund kids just have more time to spare.
That doesn't at all explain why the same players would get worse over time, though. If you're already at an elite level, you don't need to spend that much time to keep your skills up; an hour a day or even less would be plenty, so you'd think that someone who has a decade more experience would beat an obsessed eighteen-year-old, but that's no the case.
You obviously don't have a lot of experience with elite professionals. Top authors, surgeons, musicians, and dancers practice their craft constantly, many hours every day with few days off. If professional gamers' skills fall off over time, it's for the same reason as any other professional athlete, exhaustion and burnout. You just can't keep up those levels of performance for too many years, no matter what age you are. In the NBA for instance, the average career is only 2 years, and yet some of the best players in the game are older players. Give pro-gaming a little more time to mature and you'll find the same situation developing.
Growing up, maturity and adulting are just few of the real reasons behind why I don't enjoy video games anymore. It's how games are made now compared before, now it is just more competitive instead of enjoyment and some are developed for milking people out of their money.
50,000$?? Bro! The last CSGO major had million dollar prize pool. 500K for the winners. (they were luminosity to add, they were the team where the blue dude with the hat was)
500k split between 5 people isn't really very impressive compared to 6 million split between 5 million from the international. If you're trying to make this argument why not go with the bigger prize pool instead of the prize pool of the game you prefer.
It seems weird to be saying this to guys who may not even be 30 yet, but it's time to go full House Harkonen and start playing those treachery cards. Usually, your life experience will allow you to make more sneaky, underhanded maneuvers than your younger and more energetic opponents.
I think a huge part that they are missing is older people didn't grow up with many fps and RTS and the ones that did exist weren't like they are today. just like anything else if u want to be pro you have to start young and dedicate your life to it. race car driver's start as young as 3.if the medium changes to say VR gaming than we won't see the The best at that till the people that started VR at a young age muture.
Meh, its life. The guys playing SCII (the young guys) they will age too. I remember being that young. I would say what the young guys should be concerned about is RSI... espeically the ones dedicated to gaming as a lifestyle and dont take care of their bodies properly.
This research seams legitimate! I'm 29 and have been playing video-games all my life. I've gotten better at making characters and dialog options sure but when it comes to my reflexes, my ability to bounce from one new game to the other, my ability to learn new mechanics and implement them through an ever expanding and widening field, I feel those abilities have been on the decline since around 25, and that's not for a lack of effort.
Eh, in real life the speed of your brain is mostly irrelevant, because there are few professions so stressful that you have to make complicated strategic decisions within seconds or minutes. What ultimately matters most is the quality of your decisions. And incidentally this applies to most strategy games as well, Starcraft 2 just happens to be so bleeping fast that, as the dude put it, even if your decisions aren't good you can just drown the other guy in actions
went here thought this was a recently new video and then my tears started flowing as Totalbiscuit enters the vid. May your soul rest in peace the world still needs you.
it could also be we have been playing games for years and learn to love so many different types of games we dont want to play 1 game as much as they do
I’m 41, and I find these days I simply don’t have the patience to ‘learn’ a complex game. 20 years ago I’d have played League of Legends for hours a day until it finally clicked. Now, I play a few games and think ‘WTF is going on’ and go onto something else.
AldjinnTV I woke up trying to recall my mothers name, but my mind seemed blank. Wandered around my home town for hours without recognizing anything, all the object seemed blurry and it took forever before they came into focus. The slightest strain on my cognitive capacities leads to a temporary loss of consciousness. I drank 2 liters of coffee in the morning, but still feel barely awake.
and here i was thinking Melee's 7 actions per second was insane tbh, starcraft does have a entire keyboard to work with compared to a gamecube's 11 buttons, joystick and c-stick
There's no doubt that sc2 is the harder eSport, but don't undervalue the skill required to play melee. the flow of the game makes you take decisions with barely any time in between. There's really not much multitasking but there A LOT of decision making, as much as in sc2. imo both are the hardest eSports
+Hurr Durr I would argue that while sc2 is harder overall due to the immense amount of decisions needed at one time and the large amount of inputs needed to be good melee is harder tactical. While you play you need to make decisions with incomplete information in fractions of a second or you could lose. Since the movement of the characters happens in frames and often less than 40 frames you may have to reposition based on what your opponent is doing in a couple of frames to get a hit. This is prominate in the neutral game and with the amount of options you have it is usually very difficult to correctly position yourself to hit your opponent
Don't forget that in a fighting game executing must be done with timing and rhythm (like the micro), you cannot just race through the inputs as fast as possible. In RTS's like starcraft the macro can be executed as fast as possible, contributing to the higher APS. The biggest factor is definitely the keyboard mouse though, just how the mouse is more made lends itself to faster output.
I personaly cant compare the two games that well mostly beacuse i havent actuly played sc2. But in fighting games mind games are your best wepon Street Fighter is basicly 80% mindgames and 20% tech skill, but Melee is 50% tech, 50% mind, you can press buttons really fast and get really far just by beeing quick, but In high level Melee, you can be as fast as possible but if you fight someone who knows how to counter you and outsmart you, your gonna lose. A perfect example is player Westballz vs Mang0 Westballz is in my opinion THE most technical player in all of melee, Mang0 on the other hand is not as technical but still pretty insane. The reason why Mang0 offen wins against Westballz is because hes one the most unpredictable players, even he doesnt know what hes gonna do. I find that (WARNING: MY OPINION) Starcraft ~ 45% tech skill, 55% mindgames CS:GO ~ 33,3% tech skill, 66,6% mindgames Melee ~ 50% tech skill 50% mindgames Smash4 ~ 20% tech skill 80% mindgames (none of these are inherently bad, it only shows what type of players are most prevalent/ effective, and/or what to expect in the eSport) *DL;DR - eSports differ greatly in technical skill and mental skill*
I'm getting pretty close to 40 now and my reaction times are still pretty good as far as reflexes it's probably minimal difference from when I was half this age. But you look at some Marksman and hand-eye coordination really doesn't fall off till much later. Yeah these days is just an energy thing you know the older you get can't do the all night hardcore grind session like you used to. Really you just gotta love playing video games you know. And that's not just for video games but for anything in life you know to keep going you gotta love to do it. So I'm stuck playing OverWatch at 40 but I'm still kicking their ass online.
Once a gamer, always a gamer. A gamer never stops playing at no matter what age their in. By continuing playing video games you have faster reflexes, think faster, move faster and are able to solve the impossible tasks in real life. I’ve been a gamer for 46 years now and have no plans on ever stopping. True video game players do not know the meaning of game over.
Lol true I'm gonna be 35 in 5 months but don't play games all day anymore work and taking care of our house but i still like to play a few hours and play nintendo with my sis who is a year younger and my younger brothers it's fun my mom and step dad who are in there 50s will also play games now it's crazy
I’m 33 and play video games every two days for 1-2 hours. When I was 24, I used to play daily and for 8 hours a day. For me, it’s not that I’m getting old. It’s just that I have more responsibilities now and there’s more to life than just gaming. I think it’s good to have a balance.
Dude! I'm 72 years old. I've played video games since the 80's, through Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, and DooM. Yeah my reflexes have slowed. I used to run servers for Half Life 2 Deathmatch, but as time went by, I could tell my game was becoming slower and more calculating than others. So I changed to World of Warcraft where there's more complexity to casting a spell or a missile. This year, I've been knocked clean out of the park with Red Dead Redemption II and I'm looking forward to another 20 or 30 years of delicious gaming.
As I've gotten older, I feel I've gotten better at games that require logic. But I also feel like I've gotten better at games like COD by using more strategy than twitch muscles.
I have found that as a child and teenager, I played dozens of different video games, but after my mid-twenties I shifted towards putting a greater focus on fewer games.
Back when I didn't have any responsibilities like earning a living, I'd put my video game skills against anyone. When you can't grind everyday and stay practiced you do lose the touch somewhat. Online fps games start getting so frustrating I basically quit them for rpg.
Or the types of games have changed and the competitors now use different skillsets. Even between genres an “expert” in one isn’t necessarily one in another. Add in that said experts typically have a select few games they dedicate themselves to which are popular at the time of ‘mastering’... although I suppose that doesn’t sound as good in a thumbnail
Although it’s true your reaction time diminishes as you age, I do believe you can greatly improve it regardless. Think about martial artists who are quick to respond and some of them are older than 30. If you train your brain specifically to improve your reaction time or other aspects that could help you in gaming, then focus on those things and you could be just as good. I do also agree with the guy about mentioning at the fact about responsibilities and having kids can definitely impact your ability to put the time into improving these aspects in gaming. Also it’s important to keep energy levels high and stress levels down. If your tired all the time, it can also impact your gaming performance. Sadly as an adult who works all the time and has kids, getting quality sleep and time for games can be pretty hard, especially if your trying to play competitively. Of course it’s different based on their situation.
Very accurate, at least for me; I don’t play like I used to, and neither my friends know that we families and careers. I’m 30 years old, and I don’t have a desire to buy and play video games anymore. I don’t watch gaming content creators, but I have noticed most of them are under 30, with very few being 30+ years old.
Would it not stand to reason that younger people simply have less going on in their lives? Maintaining such finely honed skills takes a lot of time, if you can't devote 16 hours per day to the game, you won't keep up.
***** Yup. I play games people play competitively, because they're fun, I even join in tournaments sometimes, but it's because it's a fun time, not because I want to win
I’m 32. I feel like I’m past my prime. 23-24 was a great age for me. It’s been down hill ever since in terms of my level of curiosity, stamina, physical fitness, etc.
It’s practice. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are with gaming in general. Each game still carries nuances that you have to master. Young people have far more disposable time to devote to a single game. That’s what it takes to master a game. Take away my job and my desire to lead a normal life, and I could perform at higher levels.
Came here for the science but it ended up as an emotional rollercoaster... RIP TotalBicsuit and InControl Two legends who didnt make it to be too old for video games
there good because they have no real responsibility. kids, full time jobs, wife or full time mate. i was a beast in games but now life is more important.
I consider myself lucky in this aspect. When I was in my early teens competitive gaming was really just taking off. I can honestly say that after dumping a decade and a half into competitive style gaming that I feel my brain becoming more tired. Its like after a long hard workout and you dont want to pick up a spoon or the t.v remote even. My brain doesnt want to put forth the energy and effort anymore despite a large portion of it still wants to hold onto that competitive nostalgia. My brain has shifted more into casual gaming as ive gotten older. But at the return that im able to appreciate games, their features and the story they have to offer much more. Or less even in some games cases.
There’s a limit to practice too pro players play as much as I do and yet I’m not as good because certain games require more than practice but also a proper mentality and strategy
@@Droplifter Except there really aren't very many 45 year olds without obligations, when compared to young 20 somethings. Even the few who never married or had kids, usually have job obligations (usually managerial by this age), along with the usual obligations and stresses of running your life that come with age, like paying bills, doing the laundry, doing grocery shopping, cooking, mowing the lawn, home repairs, cleaning, caring for your now elderly parents ect. ect. ect. There sometimes just isn't enough 'free' hours in a day to put in practice and if you are still a gamer at this age, you usually spend the few hours that you get this relaxing with a slower paced game. Many won't still be playing by that age not just in competition, but some will have quit gaming altogether, due to obligations and responsibilities in life,, they will get married, have kids, buy a home ect. and end up with far too much on their plates. As for music, some of the greatest Jazz musicians around today are aged 50+, this is music that's improvised and played on the fly. There's also tonnes of EDM DJ's (also improvised ) that are aged 45+, that are every-bit as good, as 20 year olds. Both require creative thinking on the fly, multitasking along with good hand/eye coordination, reactions and timing.
yes in 23 i could complete whole game in 9,10 hours in 1 sit with food ,now in 27 i feel that much tired after 4 hours. so yes ,but anything else outside related im fine
Wow. That is really interesting. I am so glad this video never got into the stigma of video games being jus for kids. It took video games and thier challenges seriously. That is so refreshing. I have never played Starcraft before, but it looks really intense. I am used to a tradeoff of games being based on strategy or speed. Doing both is not recommended because it would overload the mind. I can take the examples of two Nintendo games. Pokemon is based more on strategy. One has to consider what types are strong or weak against what types. One has to figure out what stats a pokemon has and play to best make use of that. This can get fancy with held items, healing attacks, weather attacks and status conditions. The tradeoff is that Pokemon matches are slow. They are turn based. One can take thier sweet time choosing the right move for thier turn. Legend of Zelda is based more on speed. The fights happen in real time. One has to be quick in order to gain advantage. Otherwise they will get crushed by opponents. The tradeoff is that Zelda matches tend to not to have as much strategy. Easy opponents can be deafeated by a few quick slashes of a sword. Hard opponents, like bosses, can just be defeated by using the right kind of item and possibly striking at the right place. Personally I prefer to focus more on strategy. Strategy is fun. So when I make my own game, I have there be a lot of strategy involved. I also make it turn based wich is slow. I wonder if my game can level the playing field for different age groups. If older player take a tad longer, they can do so. It is not going to go against them.
Kids are also more able to get "in" to a game and put forth full effort. I've been gaming for 25 years and have noticed the older I get the less motivation I have to put in the extra effort to min max every action.
I always tell people, the days of retirement homes full of people sitting around watching Matlock will come to an end. It'll be a bunch of older gamers. The networks will be full of eight and eighty year olds.
I'm 72 and I game more than i ever have, its just that being retired i have all the time in the world so i tend to play at a lower pace.
Ray Tillman haha, wow, it sounds awesome actually
That's awesome! I'm jealous! haha Ummm, I'd suggest playing a bunch of single player games then. I love the story in games like Assassin's Creed and Fall Out games for example. Beautiful cutscenes and story lines go a long way to make a beautiful game better.
I'm so happy for you. Keep up.
I use games to enjoy myself, and I simply don't enjoy competitive gaming anymore.(I am 35 years old)
Hmm me too.
same
Same
If it exhausts you then doesnt that mean you're worse (off )
Be quiet old man ! Just kidding. Me too
I'm 25 and these days when I play games it doesn't give me the same satisfaction or pure joy as they once did, even with new games.
Me too, me too... Its not the same :(
It also doesn't help when you know WHY things happen in videogames, whether it was setup by the developers or it's a quirk in the game's code, being a kid and totally ignorant of how games are made meant that everything you saw in games was just as cool, or even cooler than the real world.
Nah, its the games man, they suck now. I suggest you download and engine and start making your own game that you always wanted to play. I'm 28, and I am definitely becoming my dad as well. How are you coping?
i feel you man except i don't have a girlfriend lol
Older gamers have had the amazing experience of seeing games evolve - from Space Invaders and Pac-man, to the hyper real 4k experiences of today. What a journey!
That's very true I still remember playing my first game of Space Invaders in 1979 now I have VR
True! But also older gamers are seeing the gaming world slowly fade out, we lived to see the hero become the villain in a way.
@@saulescamilla3605 No, o, no, it's not fading away--not if we don't let it! You have to have hope.
I'm fifty two. I play to relax and turn my brain off. I've been adulting all damn day. Why I don't play multiplayer.
I'm 29 and I already agree.
Older gamers ARE at a disadvantage: They have obligations and bills to pay.
When I was younger and didn't have anything to worry about, games all day, every day. These days, work all day, every day.
This exactly. They don't have the time to play in tournaments. This video is really missing the elephant in the room here.
Hey folks! I'm well aware that there are prize pools much larger than $50K for other tournaments. I was referring to the SC2 prizes for Dreamhack in Austin, but I misspoke and made it sound like I was talking about tournaments in general. Sorry for the mistake, and thanks for catching that!
It's OK, your brain is old and has a lot on it's mind. 10 years ago you wouldn't have made that mistake =P
TRUTH
+Grass Daddy dang shots fired lol
Did you tell what's his name, (weight lifting white caster guy), that he was wrong TO HIS FACE about "older players getting faster." haha jk
But seriously, I think it is interesting that the awards/greatest discoveries in mathematics, seem to always come from 17-21 year olds, in physics from 21 to 26 year olds, and + for chemistry, and ++ biology....
I think Ghost recon wildlands pvp is a pretty good game for adrenaline rush
I think a good story is what drives me the most at age 37.
Certainly I rarely feel like I did when I played Contra or Lifeforce with my cousin on the NES, but a great narrative in a universe I care about, like Jedi: Fallen Order, was really exciting.
I don't know, go 1v1 in overtime on Rainbow Six.
Dang that's actually really sad.
I'm glad, but also not glad that i don't get that adrenaline as easily from games anymore.
I'm glad because i can think clearer in high intensity situations, but at the same time i kind of miss getting that amped by playing a game.
People over 35 play.... but actually I don´t think that we have the same amount of time as younger folks to invest in video games anymore... sadly.
Can you imagine sitting in your computer chair for 10 hours a day only getting up to eat and piss, and that's your free time? I know young men who do this, every single day.
Adults have jobs. It's not that mysterious.
Don't waste your lives kids, play more videogames.
lel
The summer of 2003, I didn't have a job lined up. I had made quite a bit of surplus cash in the previous year, so I tried an "experiment" ... I spent most of my waking hours in the attic, playing Morrowind and Vice City.
No regrets.
+Len Arends Morrowind is one of my all time favorite game, even today.
I learnt more english playing video games than in my english class
Same story here. I couldn't even speak English when I was 12. I was hopeless in English classes. Then I got my first English game (Warcraft 3 and Rayman 3) and all of a sudden my knowledge in English took of and today I have it as second language.

Maybe it is the age because games seem too kiddish , stupid and cartoonish when you grow up
Most video games nowadays are just a job that you don't get paid for: farming, harvesting, crafting, etc. No thanks.
Not every game is about "farming", not by a long shot.
a damn good point.

no ones ever too old for videogames. its just that when you get older, you get picky over videogames
^This 1000%. I'm 41 and I am very picky about which games I play, Because my time is precious.
jchinckley you sir earned my respect. i wish to grow up like you and still play videogames.
Moonsover326 you never really outgrow anything. "growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional"
What makes people picky is experience. When you have more than 30 years of gaming experience, you attain knowledge in order to base your critique on.
StarCraft II is a relatively new game, which means that older players are not going to have an advantage of having extra years of experience playing it.
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky
Brood War experience helps you in SC2 (APM wise SC2 is a easy version of SC1, as SC2 helps the player more because it is a newer game), and as such SC2 is not a new game anymore.
But if you truly think StarCraft II is something that could be described as a new game, then you really need to learn more about gaming...
it's not new, it's been dying since MOBAs became popular...
+movement2contact
DotA was a very popular mod long before StarCraft II came out...
Hi mate your way of thinking is best thanks
What you said there sounds very plausible to me though, especially since it sounds so familiar in different completely different situations.
Read the story Ender's Game. A kid thinks hes playing a video game but it turns out much worse.
The question this video REALLY answers is:
Do older brains exhibit lower processing power and reaction time than younger brains in games where quick multitasking is a major advantage at the highest level of competition?
H4CTOR or instead of a paragraph you can say are older brains slower than younger ones
Unfortunately your suggested title, while more accurate, is not clickbaity enough.
H4CTOR you title your video that and see how well it tracks on TH-cam
When I read this title I knew exactly what it meant (what you described), it didn't misleading me. But i can understand someone can assume, are they too old to play video games..
That's not a very catchy title, is it now?

AoE Ronin, he's putting that "old adage" into action which says: "Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance." (Attributed to David Mamet).

Me too!
Boyd The Milkman Lol my reflexes are probably going to get better over time considering I can ketch things falling out of the fridge without even thinking now. compared to when i was 15 i'm like Neo. lol

I can agree on the fact that I switch games from time to time
Most of them I never go back to to finish
Probably since you don't play games with big competitive scenes. Most of them don't have a single player or the main focus is multiplayer
It always depends what games you play. Some like to play MOBA Ranking, Some like to play only FPS. Some play random games. Some like to play RPG like me. Once you are done with the story , you move on to the next one. I dont play rpg again because you know the story already so for what you want to play it again.

now I'm older I play mmo because they are slower paced and speed if reaction hardly comes into it

At least the graphics are nice. The gameplay could use some tweaking though, and it's abit p2w.

+Jeremy Cantrell your wrong
Quality rebuttal
and why exactly is he wrong?
Growing up, maturity and adulting are just few of the real reasons behind why I don't enjoy video games anymore. It's how games are made now compared before, now it is just more competitive instead of enjoyment and some are developed for milking people out of their money.
This whole video :

50,000$?? Bro! The last CSGO major had million dollar prize pool.
500K for the winners. (they were luminosity to add, they were the team where the blue dude with the hat was)
1 million? Bro, the Halo World Championships had a prize pool of $2.5 million Canadian.
500k split between 5 people isn't really very impressive compared to 6 million split between 5 million from the international.
If you're trying to make this argument why not go with the bigger prize pool instead of the prize pool of the game you prefer.
+Zayshi 40 mil prize pool this year for dota
Dota 2 had 18 million prize pot. ti 5
I hate aging, I knew this video would just bum me out, but I just had to watch it ._.
Same, 28 nearly and I'm definitely getting worse with fps and racing games :(
Just watching those guys playing starcraft was exhausting!
It seems weird to be saying this to guys who may not even be 30 yet, but it's time to go full House Harkonen and start playing those treachery cards. Usually, your life experience will allow you to make more sneaky, underhanded maneuvers than your younger and more energetic opponents.
26 and I feel like an old geezer. While I have never been quite a pro player, I still feel no where near as good at it as when I was younger.

This is the only comment that makes sense.

I drank 2 liters of coffee in the morning, but still feel barely awake.
and here i was thinking Melee's 7 actions per second was insane
tbh, starcraft does have a entire keyboard to work with compared to a gamecube's 11 buttons, joystick and c-stick
+WaiGee that's really the difference tbh, 7 aps on a gamecube controller is nuts
There's no doubt that sc2 is the harder eSport, but don't undervalue the skill required to play melee. the flow of the game makes you take decisions with barely any time in between. There's really not much multitasking but there A LOT of decision making, as much as in sc2.
imo both are the hardest eSports
+Hurr Durr
I would argue that while sc2 is harder overall due to the immense amount of decisions needed at one time and the large amount of inputs needed to be good melee is harder tactical.
But in fighting games mind games are your best wepon
Street Fighter is basicly 80% mindgames and 20% tech skill, but Melee is 50% tech, 50% mind, you can press buttons really fast and get really far just by beeing quick, but
In high level Melee, you can be as fast as possible but if you fight someone who knows how to counter you and outsmart you, your gonna lose.
A perfect example is player Westballz vs Mang0
Westballz is in my opinion THE most technical player in all of melee, Mang0 on the other hand is not as technical but still pretty insane.
The reason why Mang0 offen wins against Westballz is because hes one the most unpredictable players, even he doesnt know what hes gonna do.
I find that (WARNING: MY OPINION)
Starcraft ~ 45% tech skill, 55% mindgames
CS:GO ~ 33,3% tech skill, 66,6% mindgames
Melee ~ 50% tech skill 50% mindgames
Smash4 ~ 20% tech skill 80% mindgames
(none of these are inherently bad, it only shows what type of players are most prevalent/ effective, and/or what to expect in the eSport)
*DL;DR - eSports differ greatly in technical skill and mental skill*

Once a gamer, always a gamer. A gamer never stops playing at no matter what age their in. By continuing playing video games you have faster reflexes, think faster, move faster and are able to solve the impossible tasks in real life. I’ve been a gamer for 46 years now and have no plans on ever stopping. True video game players do not know the meaning of game over.

Or the types of games have changed and the competitors now use different skillsets. Even between genres an “expert” in one isn’t necessarily one in another.

Really? I think he nailed it in the beginning. Practice. Kids have more time to play and practice.
Same
Bruh, i can just playing video games for 3 hours and I’m already tired, or maybe because my Ipad is running out of battery
Up to 6,6 million dollars for a 5-player team actually...

In my entire life, I have never played an intense competitive game since my brain would explode in stress
