I think that tin is similar to lead. It's used as a rust proof coating as in bicycle spokes and corrugated iron roofing. I think that it's toxic and not used much nowadays. Americans called their metal jigs " tin squid". I think this just means metal, like the nickname for corrugated iron is "tin". Or "tin" can food packaging.
