    My first ever base splash! Super thanks to West Studio and Riot for assigning this to me! This was a different kind of challenge too because I got Covid while doing this so I had to stop midway during the thumbnail stage. Thankfully, my art director, Mingchen ( www.artstation.com/mshen ), took over the sketch and he made some cool thumbnails! Once I got better, I colored and rendered his approved sketch.
    Unlike Porcelain Kindred where I overkilled the 3D and masks, here I did not use any 3D and only used minimal masks. I was also just working on a laptop when I did this so it was beneficial to keep my process simpler. Rendering was very straightforward since the approved sketch and colors was already painted over by Riot. I just had to follow their lead. I really enjoyed putting all the subtle texture details and figuring out the vfx while limiting my color palette.
    Two lessons I learned here:
    1. Even if the pose is boring, a simple Dutch camera angle and some nice foreground elements can make it more dynamic.
    2. VFX is fun but make sure it is more readable and simple.

    ► A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
    ► I paint with the canvas size 8,000 x 4,500 px but it is shrunk down to 7,000 x 3938 for final. Final file is around 800mb.
    ► This video is 40x speed up. Do the math based on this video's time. Usually, the real time is around 40-80+ hours. (if the other thumbnails were added in). Actual work hours are more than 100+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research, and contemplating time.
    ► The toolbar at the left side is called Lazy Nezumi. It helps me get smoother lines and have perspective guides.
    ► To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods.
    GRAYSCALE COLORING 1ST METHOD:
    • Layer on top: The grayscale set to multiply. Brighten it up and colorize depending on the mood you want. This Acts as an AO pass.
    • Layer below: Use a solid brush to paint in the flat local colors.
    GRAYSCALE COLORING 2ND METHOD: (Messier)
    • Layer on top: Set this layer to softlight and add in your colors. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
    • Layer below: Grayscale here.
    ► Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
    ► I use color dodge and sometimes linear dodge blending mode to add in lighting layers.
    ► I group layers using this logic:
    1. Post processing
    2. VFX, magic
    3. Character
    4. Some fog
    5. Background people, elements, etc
    6. Sky and far background
    ► Here are my tools:
    2008-2020:
    • Wacom Intuos 3 6″x8″
    • Samsung T190
    • Intel Core i7 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, Windows 7
    • Photoshop CS6, DAZ 3D, Alchemy
    2021:
    • XP Pen Artist 24 PRO
    • Dell UltraSharp
    • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10
    • Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (this is important for faster everything)
    • Photoshop CC, Daz 3D, Zbrush, Maya
    ► To open a second window of your artwork in Photoshop it is located in Window - Arrange - New Window.
    ► To temporarily convert your artwork into grayscale. Go to View - Proof Setup - Custom - Select Dot Gain 20%. Then Press Ctrl + Y to toggle this view.
    ► I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this because that takes too much of my personal time. I'm already giving this away for FREE.

    I don´t know how to explain. At every minute during this process I was thinking "Oh wow, this looks almost done here, what a great job" just to check the time left and seeing I was very not near the end of the video. As an artist this really inspires. You make me want to do better art for myself and others. I admire your work.

    You did an amazing job! Because of you, kassadin is now my second favourite champion (in terms of his base appearance) after zed. This kassadin is much better than the old, i just wish they would make him a vgu update with minor gameplay changes and a big visual update, obviously using this appearance.
    Also i have a question:
    They give a sketch of this redesigned kassadin to work with? Or you just reimagined kassadin on your own to make the splash art?

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Thanks! We splash artists do not design anything about the character. That is the job of the concept artist. We are just like movie poster makers to make the "actors" look good.
      However, there are times when the concept is too simple looking. We can usually upgrade the armor details to make it more cinematic and push the realism while keeping the same silhouette and colors.

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      It's all about keeping the colors and values simple. Think how they color in anime. Even if there are just a base color and a shadow color it can still look right. It's the same logic but I just blend it in more and add in tiny details. If it works when viewed from a distance, it will work even if you put details. Try studying what I did during the early stages of coloring. It's all about that stage. Everything else is icing on the cake.

    Question, now that you are the level you are with your art, do you know that you’re outstandingly amazing at art!? Like considering you’ve been hired by riot to create pieces for league of legends, are you proud of your art and where you are?
    From your eyes, do you look at your art and STILL see issues in it and things you can fix?? I’m asking because if I were automatically transferred to your level of expertise in art, from the level I’m at, I am not able to notice any mistakes, and I’d be so incredibly happy of the quality of my art I don’t think I’d ever stop drawing. I know getting to your level must’ve taken ages, even half of your level I’d be proud with, if that makes sense! You’re so incredibly good, sorry for the praise. It’s really inspiring AND amazing to me! Even just your rough sketches at the beginning show how much you’ve mastered art!

    • @deivcalviz

      @@deivcalviz Thank you so much for the helpful response! Really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to respond! I was wondering as well if you have any general advice to a junior artist? In terms of mindset, job searches or resources to grow as an artist? I’ve been revamping my illustration portfolio to be more focused on specific studios that I’m aiming for. Any advice would be amazing :)

    Another amazing artwork. Now we have to wait again for another 2 months for a new one. 😆 Btw, how do you decide the level of saturation for the base color of the character before you set the grayscale to multiply? And correct me if I'm wrong, after choosing the right tone/mood for the background, you merged it and refine it on a single layer, right?

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha you know my schedule. XD Actually it’s trial and error but just make sure it’s not too saturated so there is still room to push it later on. Yup, I merged the bg layers later on since it is an organic scene.

      @@deivcalviz that's additional learning for me. I bought your Lady Maria tutorial yesterday. I learned a lot from your approach and techniques. Though I won't be able to open the psd for now coz I practice digital drawing on my phone. You mention there @38:06 on rendering stage, "Sometimes things randomly comes to you when you least expect it to." Kind of what happened where I didn't expect PayPal to give free $5 and there I was able to buy it. And luckily it's on sale. 😆

    Amazing work! Really inspiring, this might be a stupid question, but I love how you and many other great artist use the noise filter to give the illustration "movie like feel" .Do you have a process for adding noise layer and achieving such effect? I tried many times using it myself, but it makes the illustration feel weird, I must be doing something wrong. I tried to find the answer in the video, but everything happens too fast to catch it. Thank you, keep up the great work!

      For Compositions I think the Framed Ink book is a good read for that. Also anything about photography, cinematography, comics, helps a lot.

    This splash art is absolutely incredible! Its an old video now so you might not see my questions.
    1. Do you think its always better to paint from greyscale for this line of work? or do some artist paint with colors right away?
    2. When you said the the thumbnails were submitted, does that mean you have to submit your every progress to your director? or is it just something you do to get their opinion?
    Thank you for all the useful videos you provide us!

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      1. For dark scenes, greyscale works great but for sunny bright scenes, it is better to paint in color. The reason is that painting in greyscale on bright is not good is because it will look muddy and unnatural if you color it.
      2. Yes, i submit daily to my AD. Most people submit 2-3 times a week. Its a collaborative effort and ive been on both sides.
      Hope that makes sense.

    God this is amazing, I want to be a riot artist so bad! If it’s okay to ask, how do you get hired to be a splash artist for Riot? Do you just apply on their website?

    • @deivcalviz
      @deivcalviz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I work for West Studio and not Riot. You can apply to West Studio for a chance to work on splashes. Riot doesn't usually hire artists individually so its better to apply through an outsource studio like West Studio.
