Just for all future viewers of this vid - if and when you get stuck on the astro city mini talking to pc via usb driver acm part, and its not working - YOU NEED A DATA CABLE!!! The stock one included only transfers power.

I have a 128gb usb stick, a (new) data USB A to mini and tried and tried again but the PC can’t communicate with the ACM. I’ve reinstalled all drivers and also extracted the image and used a different app to write it to the USB. No luck - can anyone help by any chance? Would be so grateful as I love my ACM!!!
Maybe try a different usb port, also run the file as administrator. For me It would detect but then closed and not write anything. Also it might help if you turn on the acm fast after you pressed any key.

@@kayare4522Check the cable. A lot of devices come with power only cables. Look for any cables of old tablets or smartphones. Normally those are data and power cables. Which is what you need
Get "es-theme-minimal" and set VRAM to 40mb under system settings/frontend developer options. Now games like Metal Sug 4/5 SF3 third strike etc (larger roms fb neo) will boot all the time instead of returning to batocera. Too bad the development of this is pretty much dead and it will never get out of Alpha. It has a lot of potential, just needs some fixes and optimization.
I tried using the wifi dongle shown in the video, but it's not connecting to the internet, even when I put on my networks SSID and key. Is there some other thing you need to do to turn the dongle on?
Hi....excellent tutorial. I had a problem, everything was installed fine... but when I restart the console I only hear the music and I have no image on the screen. I tried to install it again but I lost the backup, is there any way to factory restore it again? Or is it possible to solve the problem of not having an image on the screen?

💵 ... Nano 10 board is still going for a pretty penny. Another thing to note is FPGA emulation is extremely young, and not yet matured as much as MAME / software emulation. TBH I think they'd be better if tested by arcade enthusiasts - Remember when a number of people online INSISTED that the astro city mini v had no latency issues? - Now imagine if their QA was full of those guys 😮
@@TeamPandory yeah, I remember and I skipped the Astrocity because of your review and started to mess with a DE10.... Using it mainly for C64, Amiga, Mega Drive and some Nintendo in terms of a few games it honestly doesn't make such a difference (given that controls especially on C64 was horrible ever since, though the latency issue is notable), but when you enter demos it is an absolute different beast. Sadly, supply has somewhat ceased, but I still think a decent remake would have been great, considering they should have gotten away with a less powerful FPGA than the Mister
Just got a new ACM from amazon from the recent re-release, just tried everything to make this work and my computer and the ACM won’t go into FEL mode, oh well, it is what it is, I used three different USB a to mini cables and two different USB’s and installed the drivers and when I turn it on, it boots up normally.
... There was a re-release?!? Maybe post in their github. We had an issue of it not playing ball if we used right click > run as administrator. The only way it would work was by double clicking the bat file. You could also try another USB port, or computer.
SOS! I am stuck! I am up to the point where you connect the ACM to your PC while running the ACM Backup and Install.BAT and it will not find my ACM. I know you need a data cable and that the one that comes with the unit is power only, so I am attempting to use every other cable I have to no avail. I have the NES, SNES, PlayStation Classic, and Gen 2 mini and have tried using each of the cables that came with those, but nothing is working. Aren’t those all data cables as well? I have hacked them with either Hakchi or Autobleem which I don’t think I could do unless I had data cables, so at this point I’m not sure what to try next other than buying another cable off Amazon.
For the most part, those are power cables. You'll know if it's a data cable if you can access or control something when you plug it into a pc. For example a usb controller may appear when plugged in rather than need to connect via Bluetooth. Check Amazon and look for a cable that advertises a transfer speed. That will be data compatible. Another thing you can try is either double clicking or right clicking and using administrator mode. The outcome may be better. Also turning off anti virus such as avast or even pausing windows defender. They get in the way of doing things like this.

I'm on Windows 10 and have even tried turning off Defender as you recommended. I'm completely stumped as to what I'm doing wrong. My USB stick is a Samsung 256GB so that shouldn't be an issue, and I've followed the steps in your video to a tee. I've also cross-checked against the github guide as found in the README file. I'm not sure what else I can try at this point, the handshake seems unable to see it. No idea where to go next. I've done easy hacks like the NES/SNES mini and gotten more involved hacks with my PS Classic running autobleem and this all seems so straight forward, but its not happening for me.

You don't lose space, batocera changes it to become a large Linux partition. Watch the whole video to see how to either copy games over, or change the partition to work in windows (around 7 minutes)
Hi Team, I'm reaching out for a bit of help. I followed the instructions for the Astro City Boy but installed the wrong asset. still able to connect to the device but only have sound. The only time I'm getting anything on the screen is when it's connected to the pc and flashing. once it reboots it goes back to a blank screen with sound. re flashed with batocera-sunxi_r16-acm-36-20221201.img.gz but have the same issue. Any advice is appreciated. (note I do still have the standard boot screen via HDMI and can move the tab up and down with the wrong key) Have tried the acm-restore.bat, No joy, Thanks C
Hey there Chris. We'd suggest you reach out and open a tab on their github. Even though we did demonstrate this to work, we don't really know the ins and outs of how it works. Another idea would be to try the process on another computer, using another cable, and re-checking each package that you have downloaded (Astrocity mini). Good luck on getting it running! Keep us informed if you manage to sort the issue, should help others if they get into the same problem.
Hi Team, Did try several times to build the USB again today on a new stick and different laptop. It has no issues sending the update over. AS soon as the screen turns off after the update has run that the last time you see anything on the display.. The rebooting screen is the last thing you see after the update @@TeamPandory
@@Chris-HC Ok, it sounds like the patch is done, but it's not successfully loading batocera from the USB stick. Either from an incompatible USB stick, wrong usb port, bad flash (try extracting it before using balena etcher to burn the image), or maybe there's not enough amperage powering the ACM. Are you using a 2Amp power brick to power it?
So what's the stock emulator on the Astrocity mini? Heard Virtua Fighter is perfect on those machines which is kinda cool seeing as it still not emulated properly in mame. Be interested to know man!

Reckon it would be possible to dump the entire emulator and see if it would run on something else? Okay so Mame 0.217 fixes transparencies and the fact that their hair doesn't fall off but the collision detection is still way off. Latest versions of Mame also have that same issue, collisions. Makes sense that Sega got it emulated perfect. I mean who better to have the source code for model 1 but the people that wrote it! That's some deep dive shit right there! Hahaha. Only 6 games were ever released on Model 1. Four run pretty much perfect but Virtua Fighter is still broken and Wing War is a proper mess still. Hmmmm Sorry man. Got myself thinking which usually leads me down these rabbit holes. Pays off a lot of the time tho 😂
Despite all of my best efforts, I was able to install the firmware but can't get either alpha of Batocera to work. I have tried two different etcher apps on Windows 11 (Balena etcher and Win 32 ). Balena on macOS, run as admin on both platforms in all cases, seems to mount the partition but stops at the loading screen.
The first boot should take a bit longer than usual, as it needs to create the games partition, but it could be that your USB drive doesn't work very well with the unit. Try another USB stick.
You search for that md5 hash, when you have the bios file, use Md5Checker and check the number. If it matches that's the recommended bios file you need. Others should also work, but this is the defacto way of finding the one they recommend.
@@christophercapri1872 mame is one of the most complicated things to emulate. You need to match the mame ROM with the mame emulator. To select the emulator, in mame select the game and push select, select the correct mame. You need a bios if that game is needed, and also the mame 2003 set is very old. It's recommended for lower spec systems like this astro mini. Thing is, 2003 is 20 years old! There have been many updates to mame since. Best checking the arcadeitalia website and finding your game. It will tell you which version of mame works, and if it needs more files. Sorry if that's not easy to understand, mame is a bit of a minefield
Hi guys, I've got a problem with my Astro City mini. The vertical games are displayed rotated 90° to the right. For example, in this video at the 15.28 mark, Team Pandory is testing Truxton. On mine, I can launch the game but it's rotated 90°. And it's the same result with any vertical/Tate game, be it in MAME or FBneo. I've tried to set it up by accessing the RetroArch menu in-game, but it didn't work. Same, I've tried in the frontend menu, but didn't manage to get it in the right orientation. Note : when I first booted up Batocera, the interface was rotated 90° to the left and I had to correct it in the frontend options. My online researches for a solution have been a failure so far, can somebody help me please ? Thank you !
@@prettylovelyshit if you get one of these, you can copy over files directly to the Astrocity mini through the WiFi network. We didn't have one handy, so the other method was used.
@@prettylovelyshit there are two usb ports. Usb port 2 has batocera and all games, if you ever need to use the WiFi dongle you can use port 1. ... Or just copy over via pc like we did in this video. 😊

Easiest way would be to use Linux. Copy all files from your ext4 partition off, format to exfat then plonk them back on.... or use a WiFi dongle 😂
Nice little machine, doubt my aged eye's would play well with it, and being old means I have built in latency as standard :)
But if you have latency, and the machine has a bit of latency, that'd make super latency. Like a hat on a hat 🤠

@@Nintality it only uses 5v 1a. It might benefit from using a 2a power brick but I think for this particular one it's enough.

Yes, as long as you don't push it with the later 3D games you should be fine.

I use the San Disk that’s linked from your description, and it fails on the ‘etch’.

On mine, I can launch the game but it's rotated 90°.
And it's the same result with any vertical/Tate game, be it in MAME or FBneo.
I've tried to set it up by accessing the RetroArch menu in-game, but it didn't work.
Same, I've tried in the frontend menu, but didn't manage to get it in the right orientation.
Note : when I first booted up Batocera, the interface was rotated 90° to the left and I had to correct it in the frontend options.
My online researches for a solution have been a failure so far, can somebody help me please ?

Go to advanced game option, allow rotation: set to OFF.
Hello, if i install batocera , will the original games disappear? How can i play the original installed games?
Not at all, the stock games are untouched.
Just remove the USB stick and turn it on like in this video @19:04

@@prettylovelyshit if you get one of these, you can copy over files directly to the Astrocity mini through the WiFi network. We didn't have one handy, so the other method was used.
But if i use the usb plug on the astro city mini for the usb wifi, then i will not have the usb plug for the usb stick ( for saving the games)?
@@prettylovelyshit there are two usb ports. Usb port 2 has batocera and all games, if you ever need to use the WiFi dongle you can use port 1.
... Or just copy over via pc like we did in this video. 😊
