The Recipe: Perform well at the World Cup to grow the sport's popularity-> grow the MLS->sign big international stars->and finally: secure large tv contracts and increase league revenue and individual team payroll in the MLS until it is on par with the US Big 4 (Football Basketball Baseball Hockey). Then, and only then, will the US be able to win a World Cup, because then children here in the US will stop giving up the sport at age 10 like they do now.

They also get little free time compared to Europeans so aren't willing to commit to a goalless draw. American sports have big down times and high scores. This is beneficial to advertisers. That and america can't dominate the sport as the competition is too fierce as you say. That's why Americans don't play "Soccer"

Most kids actually play soccer growing up, but then move on to football, basketball, baseball, hocker, etc. If soccer had half the attention we give to baseball (the lesser of our big three), we'd dominate. Since we started out rebelling against the British, we started our own sports (basketball,baseball and American football have gotten quite sucessful if you aren't aware) and I think we just didn't even care about soccer(aside from small pockets) until about 30yrs ago. Then you got games like cricket. It's not that we're bad at it. We just don't care about it or respect it as a sport lmao
