No, on the contrary, Americans are doing Royal Navy style salutes. Queen Vic didn't like officers with their hats off (traditional way off saluting) so she ordered them to do salutes (similar to the army salute). However during the age of sail sailors' hands often got dirty because of the tar used in waterproofing stuff. So she ordered (only the navy) to salute with their palms down, as showing a dirty hand to the queen would be disrespectful. Hope it helped.

i know you commented this six years ago but basically navy is the only branch to salute without palms out because when Queen Victoria was on a boat and all the sailors had dirty hands she said she didn’t want to see it, and that’s why it’s different to the other british armed forces
I was there in 2010, and believe me the training style has been change a lot in BRNC. I am pretty sure it was much better before.

I remember my training in this college it was tough the hardest was PLX in Dartmoor . but I have enjoyed my time with my colleagues at Hoalk division
