CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As Berthold (Eric Idle) runs to Austria to fetch a bottle of wine, the Sultan (Peter Jeffrey) entertains the Baron (John Neville) with his latest opera, The Torturer's Apprentice.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Terry Gilliam adroitly applies his Monty Python sensibilities upon the "career" of famed German prevaricator Baron von Munchausen. Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale....In short, all of Munchausen's fabulous lies are here presented as "truth," played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli's Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams -- that is, by the head of Robin Williams -- as the King of the Moon. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding 45 million dollars, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette.

Love this movie. I love how the Baron says "no thank you," when the Sultan offers to play the Torturer's Apprentice. Just as kind and cheerful as if someone had asked if he wanted a cup of tea. I love so many details about this movie, like the fact that there's an obese member of the Sultan's harem lying in a hammock over the Baron's head as he hands Berthold the letter to the empress. I love the people camped out under the head of the decapitated horse statue and the face pressed in the sand on the moon. It's a rare comedy about war, death, and the King of the Moon riding on a three-headed robotic parakeet and throwing giant asparagus spears at Eric Idle.
Ariana Klassen-Glanzer it’s VERY Monty Pythonish, for obvious reason. lol
Agreed. Many things I love about this film. Including how the baron starts off old and decrepit and gets younger as the adventure rejuvenates him.
This is such an underrated film. It’s one of my favorites from my childhood. It’s fun, it’s unique, visually beautiful, comical, sometimes SCARY, sometimes very sweet, very good special effects, amazing acting, an epic soundtrack, the list goes on! How could this get such low ratings is beyond me.
People lack imagination
Also Uma Thurman
@@willowufgood261god yes
The effects in this movie were so superb and all practical.
Still the best depiction of super speed in a movie.
I loved this movie as a kid. When I was sick, my parents rented it for me and instantly fell in love with it. I remember renting it again for a birthday sleep over I had with a bunch of friends. They all hated it, and we didn't make it far. It was then I found out I have unique tastes in things.
I love you
Same, none of my friends liked it and we turned it off after 10 minutes
What weak minds lol
Don't worry too much. I think that kind of happens with every sleep over. I think that most people just aren't in the mood to watch movies but rather play games, etc.
"-No thank you." " "Oh, You'll love it!"
This movie is so good it makes me weep. It’s the greatest movie of all time. I saw this when I was a boy and now I share it with my boys in 2023. Believe it or not this is Gilliams masterpiece. I wonder if Gilliam realizes he made a masterpiece I’m sure he does. Let me tell you as a boy in 1989 this movies was sublime. All that I can say is what Terry Gilliam set out to achieve with an audience upon this movies release he absolutely achieved with me.
this movie is a masterpiece. It's one of my all time favourite movies.
One of the best fantasy films ever
the expression on the barons face during the overture is the best!! Kind of a " this is kind of....awful....". And Berthold's friction screeching sound as he takes off to Vienna and then thunders out of the room is neato!!!
I was 11 when my mom took me to see this movie. I didn't think it was going to hold a candle to Ghostbusters and Back to the Future.....wrong. I particularly loved Robin Williams as the King of the Moon. Magnificent film, instant classic.
I was right there with you as a young boy during theatrical release. They don’t make them like this anymore
It really gets to me how little recognition this film has gotten. All that amazing work, and it might as well be "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes."
@@DocTerror77for real lol
I’ll never forget this movie. I was expecting trash but it was brilliant. Perhaps Gilliam’s best movie and he made some good ones.
R.I.P. John Neville
A eunuch's life is hard....
...and nothing else.
It's a pity that Gilliam has such a low opinion of this...I think it's one of his best movies.
It's one of my favorites as well, but the movie was a production disaster for him with filming delays, the entire costume wardrobe disappearing and the locals in spain trying to bleed the budget dry. It was not a pleasant experience during most of the shooting.
V Guyver Yes,I've heard all the stories.
snarkus63 indeed. I think it's remarkable that he pulled this movie off despite all that. Just a testament to Gilliams abilities.
absolutely among his best, yeah... my all-time favorite childhood movie by leaps and bounds. It's really too bad what's been going on with him lately... Zero Theorem was such a bummer...
They pinched the wardrobe? I wonder if he ever saw his costumes appearing in Spanish productions
Best movie ever. So much fun.
We had a VHS recording of this from the tv and it started at 1:56
As a kid I loved watching it, then forgot about it as an adult until one day I found the complete dvd, watching the beginning was amazing because finally it gave me full context as well as nostalgia, even without the beginning I got a vague idea and still love the film
Ah Baron, always the diplomat.
Eric idle was great. He even played Ratty in live action Wind in the Willows film, slyly in Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer the movie, Devon in quest for camelot, that henchman for a greedy woman in live action Casper movie, and evil Martin in the second secret of nimh movie. Amazing.
My favorite film.
There is no one on the rack but me.
Oh, You'll love it!
No thank you!
You're no fun!!
0:28 Unstoppable force mode on!!!!! One of my favorites scenes from the movie!
A true gem 💎 ✨️.. I was born in 1984.. remember watching it as a kid this movie could even come out now. Found this from a documentary about Robin Williams
Fun Fact: The effects used for Berthold running aren't effects at all, Eric Idle can actually run that fast.
Thomas B. Munchausen I wanna know WTF kind of drugs he took to obtain that kind of speed! The Flash, eat your heart out!
My child have watched this he want to run as fast as him
@@projectpan7431 Oh yes, he bravely ran away and probably soiled himself lol
So his last name is just ironic?
@@mileslong3904 good one. hell yeah dude.
The effects of old Terry Gilliam films were ahead of it's time
Noticed the naked chubby lady over Baron's head at 0:01.
This is a movie where you need to pause every frame to notice the details.
Who sleeps in a hammock that high up?
@@Crusader-Ramos45 The Navi from Avatar. I can't think of anyone else now.
@@Crusader-Ramos45 I think the point is to subtly threaten the Baron. All the gags here are about being extra sadistic, and this could also be to threaten the woman with the bodily harm of falling, too. No one is safe. lol
Yep. Eric once described the production of this film as the second worst experience of his life (boarding school being the worst).
One of most underrated 1980s movies.
I've always been a giant fan of The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen but I never knew of this movie!!!
I love this film. Michael Bentine would be so proud....
Now, there is a new character with superspeed.
Don't say Sonic.
Eric idle was funny I like his voice.
“He’s gone funny.” lol
the best movie I have ever seen >3
The organ is based on a real version that used cats instead, with meows of different tonal range.
Finally You started to put "Baron Munchausen" clips in HD!
Many Thanks!!!
Hmm the inventor of that organ must have been an ancestor of Ken Ewing.
He reminded me of Baron Munchausen...which featured a lot of piano.
IT TOOK ME 18 YEARS TO REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS MOVIE!!
For years I only remembered that there was a character who ran so fast that he needed a ball and chain on either leg to stand still. The description is too specific to get anything good out of Google, so for years it's been sitting on a back burner somewhere in my mind. Five minutes ago the name "Munchausen" rang a bell. My burden has been lifted. The itch has been scratched. I am free. HIS NAME IS BERTHOLD AND I KNOW THE NAME OF THE MOVIE AT LAST
The ultimate period superhero flick. It's like if The Flash, Hawkeye, Hulk and Havok help out an elderly Jacques Duquesne.
Thank Yu for this good evening!!!!😊
Love this movie & all the actors in it
Cut down in my prime, mein hurtz, mein hurtz.
thanks for the trim
This movie use to always come on in the early 90s
Jack Sparrow learned a lot from Baron Munchausen. Which is pretty gorgeous!
Eric is anything but idle, isnt he?
Beast mode.
Some 20 years ago I saw a scene of this movie late at night and I've been trying to figure out what movie I actually saw back then. All I could vaguely remember was the buildup to Bertholds running, and now I've finally found it!
The bizarre nature of it suddenly made me think of Time Bandits, and thus I figured that this simply must be a Terry Gilliam movie too. I'm so relieved to have figured it out after all these years
Haven’t seen this movie since I was way younger, but I have been reading a few reviews recently and they’ve led me to want to rewatch it. This scene is really funny, too, which also makes me want to rewatch it.
I have seen this movie dozens of times and only now I have noticed how big this candle really is.
Such a dreamy movie.
I have spent years trying to remember this movie, but could never remember the name or who was in it and now I finally know, my search is finally over, I have had like one scene stuck in my head for nearly two decades trying to remember this movie, so now i can finally watch this film again and end the torture of my brain of not knowing this movie.
The same happened to me. After 20 something years I just found it today. The scene i remembered was this guy chasing after a bullet. Amazing
The Celestial Dragons
One of the very few faithful adaptations of this fun book!
gotta go fast
y eah
oh man I have to see this movie again soon !! :D
So THAT'S where Might Guy got the idea.......
I wonder if Gilliam knew Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer when he wrote that..
Have you guys noticed that nude big lady on a hammock? Above the baron? Hahaha. I just noticed that now, didnt noticed it before when I watched this movie.
Talk about a Sword of Damocles hanging over his head,
The scene takes place in the emperor's harem. The whole room is filled with women in various stages of undress.
@@qloey the women on the left are covered up extra well. I think the point is that everyone here is under some sort of distress, not "stages of undress". I think the joke went over your head. lol 🤣
Searching for this movie for years ,remener watching calling whale swallowed fastman and super hearing ,was 5yrs old r so
Craazy
So basically the chuck norris of his time.
Can't believe this movie was considered okay for kids. 😆 🤣 I loved this movie... good times
Well shit this is a blast from the past
In the eighties people listed for commercial films, it wouls have been a much bigger success in any other decade.
Please remove your knickers...
So just to recap: This classic 80s comedy tanked at the box office while Jack and Jill made bank…you can go ahead and process it if you want, but the more you do it, the more you want to drive to your local liquor store.
This is such a beautiful film. A work of art, really. But I'm amazed a studio gave Gilliam enough money to make it after all the problems he had making Brazil.
El sultán tiene una gran voz al cantar.
Some characters in the anime One Piece loan from these stories.
Albrecht is Jezus Burgess, Adolphus the sniper is Van Auge.
This was such a weird film, it used to scare me as a child lol
Andrew Parry there were quite a few FREAKY parts, indeed. lol
Maybe because it's not a film for children.
0:47when I will be late.
Ben Kingsley?
He looks like Bryan Cranston. Like in Trumbo
1:06 Eso no es un reloj de arena, es de ¡perdigones!
my brain on ADHD meds…
0:25 a 0:48 El arranque ja ja ja ja.
Is Eric Idle the only Python in this movie?
There's Terry Gilliam...
Here from Yogscast
rodinski!
One piece brought me here
I can see why the movie did so badly: The ads. Wow. Monty Python fans would love them, but most of America wasn’t there. The movie isn’t a Monty Python movie. Pathetic ads.
one of the few good scenes in this movie. stick with TIME BANDITS
This movie was a flop then $38 m loss
Jan Axel Layese Cortes it amazes me...I love this movie. I guess a lot of films like this are considered garbage when they come out, but years later, become cult classics.
Did they change the baron's nationality to british? wtf?
It' had a mostly British cast.
I don't like it it looks all funkey 1/10 you wanna heare a joke...yes.....your life peace....
Deutscher Witz ! Ihr Briten und Amis seid nicht in der Lage dazu !
terrible movie
Lame
Olivier Baghdadi
U have no imagination
I do but not this kind
It's racist
Hilmi Prabowo says u
What a bizarre, idiotic move.
Alex Jones It's supposed to be that way lol
Sounds like a description of your life.
Stupid movie. Terry Gillian’s films make me nauseous
