    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    As the Baron (John Neville) and his men come under attack for taking all of the Sultan's (Peter Jeffrey) treasure, the line between theater and reality begins to blur.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Director Terry Gilliam adroitly applies his Monty Python sensibilities upon the "career" of famed German prevaricator Baron von Munchausen. Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale....In short, all of Munchausen's fabulous lies are here presented as "truth," played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli's Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams -- that is, by the head of Robin Williams -- as the King of the Moon. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding 45 million dollars, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette.

    Words can't describe how much I love the scene at 0:31, baron and his gang marching victoriously with all the treasure and heading into a new adventure! According to the original novel by Rudolf Raspe baron escaped successfully the Sultan's army with a ship but later on all the treasure was stolen by thieves!

      This movie was based upon a book?

    • @dunetiger
      @dunetiger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bravosierra2447 An 18th century book full of tall tales as told by the Baron himself. A lot of elements from those stories makes it into the movie. For a time, so it is said, it was the best selling book in the entire world, second only to the Bible. Pretty crazy how something that popular just completely died out. Gilliam hunted down the book and wanted to revive it after hearing about it.

      @101Volts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dunetiger *Whoa.* That's _colossal_ for how popular it was, but I suppose a lot of things just come and go. Like how Charlie Chan was a long lasting series, of 44 movies from 1931 - 1949 (40 which survive today,) but no one seems to be trying to make it a continuing series again.

    • @dunetiger
      @dunetiger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@101Volts I think the deal with Charlie Chan is that it has a history of enforcing (arguably negative) stereotypes despite the intention of painting then-villainized Asian people in a good light. Absolutely the character could be revived in a good way, but I think - like the Baron's stories - the detective mystery in general just isn't marketable these days, at least not in a major way. A TV series might work, but only if you trust modern writers to come up with good cases (and I don't; today's shows are awful). But yeah, we see the same kind of thing happening these days, but on a smaller scale and a much faster pace. There was a time when EVERYONE was talking about GoT and now nobody even cares to remember it fondly. haha

    The cut here, or rather: the many cuts, from one scenery to the other, from the imaginary Sultan's palace to the real theater, is nothing short of marvelous! An absolute masterclass in shifting realities.

    Some of the Baron's memory episodes are based on the Grimm fairy-tale called "How Six Made Their Way In The World", a childhood favourite of mine. Gilliam put a brilliant spin on them all.

    • @gonzalopriale3293
      @gonzalopriale3293 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, the Baron's friends that appear in this movie were inspired on the characters from that Grimm tale! I didn't know that, but i just looked it up!❤️
      All of the Baron's tall tales (riding a cannonball, travelling to the Moon, being swallowed by a giant fish in the Mediterranean Sea, saving himself from drowning by pulling on his own hair, etc) featured in this movie are in Rudolf Erich Raspe's (German writer) novel "Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia", which was published in 1785. This novel was the basis of this Gilliam movie.

      The strong man could be Jesus Burguess, and the Baron itself can also be Doc Q. Also the canon ball travelling and the ship to the moon are also a thing in both stories
