Well it will be the most expensive overdrive pedal boss has ever made. You can get get a boss SD-1 super overdrive pedal for a third of the price of this one. And the SD-1 is already a fantastic OD pedal.
I’ve been a big pedal board man for a long long time but in recent months I’m trying to do the minimal. With a good tube amp and a good Tele or Strat this unit sounds great. I bought an MXR Fat Sugar last year and that’s an incredible overdrive. I’ve ordered the Boss after hearing your demo.
Thanks! I have almost zero theoretical knowledge so I just play whatever tune comes into my head. A primitive way of working, I guess, but I get by. Cheers.
At the start and end of this video I was reminded of Christopher Cross' sound back in the day, not the work of Eric Johnson but Christopher's specifically, punchy but with that added growl only to the mid range. Towards the end, through the plexi, it reminded me of what Angus Young got on Back in black from that wireless unit some consider the secret sauce. If you have a SG around, maybe do some research in that direction. Very interesting pedal. Think I will get a couple of them to play around with in every config possible. You definitely sold me on this one. Like those new digs, looks like a super comfy place to do what you do.
Does jammin Boss BP-1W make anyone else really happy? Boss BP-1W is quickly becoming my favorite pedal. It's just so beautiful and sexy. Practically free and the second you drop her on the board that chill ass mofo gives you a Rich Dark Gushing Robust tone.. And you also get this cute little 1/1 feedback response usually too harmless to be forgotten. But more than that, the Boss BP-1 is just so positively alluring. It comes on the board like "do you want to cast a spell?" and I'm like "yeah BP-1W i do want to cast a spell let's do this shit" and when she attacks she's like "SPELLS ARE FUN" and I'm like "yeah they are SO FUN." She doesn't say some bullshit macho shit like "I will destroy you" she's just like "nah spells are fun and voodoo spooky.” And she looks so happy. I mean this is an inanimate object that literally brought my guitar to life by magic. It understands it's life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just fucking loving it. I mean just look at her face she’s just so happy and cute as a button. I am literally never sad when Boss BP-1W is on board. IDK if she's gonna ever make it into the pedal HOF or not, but for now she a super chill pedal.
Still got this pedal, Brett? I am getting an "unmusical" clipping sound on mine with the Gain control above 1:00, more pronounced in RE mode, that occurs with a heavier pick attack. A lighter picking technique doesn't seem to induce it. Hearing it on a clean channel but it's masked playing with some dirt. Wondering if it's inherent to the pedal or if something is up with mine. Did you notice this at all during your testing?
Some great tones/overtones and very natural. However, wasn’t nearly as infatuated when played thru the Plexi and there are no tone shaping controls. Also, not sure if you mentioned, but I believe it has two switchable buffer modes?
I am not a paid comment maker for this. This pedal sounds as good as the player. Very good. Sir, what is your recording chain for this video? You sound killer.
This is a continuation of their revisiting their own legacy products in modern pedal formats. They recently released two versions of a modern space echo pedal as well as a modern version of the ce-1. Makes sense that they would release a related product focused on the preamps of those classic units as well since many players over the years have used the vintage units JUST for their preamps even when they didn’t want the delay or chorus effects they provide.
hi brett, great pedal demo. i´m considering to buy this one but i´m also thinking about the page from kingsley. i would love to see a comparison of both pedals.
How well would this do in the FX loop of an amp to serve as a pure volume dB boost for solos? If you think there's a better alternative, I'm all ears. I've got a Jackson Audio Prism I'm using for now and it's fine but getting the level just right is a challenge with it. It either doesn't really offer any extra dB or WAAY too much.
What I find perplexing is that the CE-1 provides a +/-13V supply to the preamp circuit. How does this pedal accomplish that? Or is this simply a digital model of the CE-1's preamp sound?
Brett please! Stop showing me that Charvel, I'm going to be making an impulse buy! Just joking mate, great video as always. Can I just provide a little bit of advice? No offence intended. It's not 'Wozza', it's 'Waza'. Japanese word that means something like 'technique'. Pronounced definitely as 'Wah-zah', not the Australian 'Wozza'. Please don't take offense at what I have said, it just drives me insane when I hear words mistakenly pronounced. Not that I should comment because I'm not a native English speaker and I know I often have a noticeable accent. No disrespect intended.
I'm guessing the 'RE' pre-amp model is lifted straight from the RE-202. There is an option to turn it off with that, which I believe reduces the latency a little, but I like the colour it adds to the sound. Nice demo as usual Brett. As so often on your vids I'll say 'If I was in the market for something like this I'd definitely check this out'. 🤘🙂
It's based on classic boss preamps that didn't have tone controls. A normal passive tone would change the tone. A low pass would be nice but I like that they just kept the circuits and added a level control.
With boosters in general, there is a rule of thumb - MORE IS MORE, you should have cranked both the level and the gain knob to show us just how much signal those tubes can't handle
It's not going to make you noticeably thrashier sounding like a tube screamer pedal or a over drive pedal. It's more about just making your sound sound a lil better. Give you a slight edge in tone and a more unique sound. Get it if you want that vibe. Don't get if you want to be epic loud sounding. Get the Ds1 distortion waza boss pedal if you want that haha. Or get both! Pretty much all the waza boss pedal line is amazing!
This might actually be the best overdrive pedal BOSS has ever made.
Certainly has the best demos at least
Nothing will supplant the blues driver but this pedal… I may have to own one. What a fantastic concept and execution
Well it will be the most expensive overdrive pedal boss has ever made. You can get get a boss SD-1 super overdrive pedal for a third of the price of this one. And the SD-1 is already a fantastic OD pedal.
That title would go to OD3 imo
You guys didn't get what the OP was saying.
I think "very hard to turn off" is honestly one of the best compliments to a pedal I've ever heard. Thanks for posting!
The CE mode has that lovely glassy compressed sound.
Marvelous review Brett will be buying one myself 😀
Best Boss drive section pedal yet.
Mr Kingman, you are the OG, and your channel has remained one of the best. That Charvel sounds amazing in your hands
Mr Fowler, I appreciate it. Thank you.
Finally a Boss pedal I might buy.
I’ve been a big pedal board man for a long long time but in recent months I’m trying to do the minimal.

I have said before and say it again Brett is KING!!!
Wow, that is a really smart move by Boss.
The pedal is amazing, and the playing as well!
On my list!
Very beautiful pedal, I like the CE sound on it. Glad Boss decided to make another another boost after the FB-1
Its a overdrive and boost i love it
Awesome playing. Thought I was at a Steely Dan concert.
Love your demos and playing man. That pedal is on my list for sure.
I just made a decree to myself I needed no more OD pedals. Why must you tempt me so. That thing sounds awesome. Foul foul temptations!
It sounds incredible unique Boss really came through🎸
Sweet, melodic playing Brett. Pedal sounds great.
Your guitar playing is just amazing (in the intro song)... You really sing in your solos. Thanks for the demo and the musical inspiration.
Thanks! I have almost zero theoretical knowledge so I just play whatever tune comes into my head. A primitive way of working, I guess, but I get by. Cheers.
Brett, You are looking good. "Very hard to turn off." I love that!
Such a good play. Congrats. ! ! !
Brett, you a great player.
Sweet licks and a great demo dude.
Such good playing!!!
The Boss CE-1 gave Andy Summers of the Police a little overdrive. I think of stacking this pedal before overdrives and distortions for lead solos .
Cool lead guitar playing!

My JTM45 needs this👌
Man, this has “Gilmour”-type sounds all over it… so interesting
Best reviewer going around
I WILL "need" this... Even though I have all boss OD, distortion, fuzz pedals aaand 3 EQ pedals for boost...
Outstanding
Glad you're back in my feed again. Ya disappeared for a while. Ha. Great-sounding pedal and your playing is, as always, toney and tasty.

I seem to be using mine as a main overdrive at the moment :) it just happened naturally! the video is so right! hard to turn off
the RE mode sounds really good. pretty happy with my modded BD-2 for pushing an AC30... but this might be worth trying
Still got this pedal, Brett? I am getting an "unmusical" clipping sound on mine with the Gain control above 1:00, more pronounced in RE mode, that occurs with a heavier pick attack. Does it go away as you turn down your level on the pedal?
Excellent ❤
Buen pedal suena de maravilla
I know this is Axe-FX but how do I dial in a Deluxe Reverb to sound like 3:16 ? that's like the perfect clean sound to my ears
Might consider this boost for my Plexi1👍
Fuck ya. Boss proving who is Boss.
Some great tones/overtones and very natural. However, wasn’t nearly as infatuated when played thru the Plexi and there are no tone shaping controls. Also, not sure if you mentioned, but I believe it has two switchable buffer modes?
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not a paid comment maker for this. This pedal sounds as good as the player. Very good.
Sir, what is your recording chain for this video? You sound killer.
4:51 got a very Blackmore Made In Japan 'clean' there..
Getting a bit of the Mark Seymour 'do you see what i see' tone!
This pedal sounds great, but theres not enough clean headroom in Nat mode. You have to have the gain up pretty high to get a push.
Is this in response to the pastfx preamp crunch pedal? Either way, it's a sound I love

hi brett, great pedal demo. i´m considering to buy this one but i´m also thinking about the page from kingsley. i would love to see a comparison of both pedals.
❤❤
It sounds like some sort of DOD250 but with more warmer, less fizzy tone.
It’s been 3 weeks I’ve been on my local guitar website for this pedal to be release. At least 4-5 times a day. 😅
Krikey mate !
How well would this do in the FX loop of an amp to serve as a pure volume dB boost for solos? If you think there's a better alternative, I'm all ears.

How did you cut the pedal in the video!? Thanks?
Hi Brett, I see you got the Fender FRFR in the Backround. How do you like it?
I have two of them. They're very good. Plenty of 'openess' and more cab-like than the very linear CLR's. So far, so good.
I can see Satriani liking this lol ❤
righteous
Hey Brett, do you still have your Yerasov GTA-15? Would love to hear this Boss pedal into the Yerasov. 😊
What I find perplexing is that the CE-1 provides a +/-13V supply to the preamp circuit. How does this pedal accomplish that? Or is this simply a digital model of the CE-1's preamp sound?
Noice!!!
How does the PB-1W clean mode compare with the FREE THE TONE FB-2 FINAL BOOSTER?
It looks great. Best boss pedal? C’mon.
🤘👍🏿

It's a bit like how Wampler should be pronounced more like 'Wahmpler' rather than 'Wompler'. I still use the latter. 😇
Is it going into a real Deluxe or the Axe FX?
1965 Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb, AB763 model in the Axe.
Any reason you boosted the highs in post during edit? It sounds good but a little sterile and harsh. Is this pedal a treble hog?
1. I didn't. 2. Each to their own. 3. No.
@@BrettKingman thanks man!!! Maybe it's my headphones 🙃
4:50 sounds rather Blackmorian
Thank you. where to find the backing track?
jtc_guitar.com. It's called 'Doobie Vibe' if I remember correctly.
いいね!
This is goes into return channel?
guess im the only one here that uses this as a natural clean boost... at the end of my overdrives...

It's not. The RE-202 is a complete DSP recreation, this guy is fully analog
Are you suggesting the pedal is digital signal processing ? I tought it was analog...
@@faisletoismeme It's not easy to tell. If it is fully analogue then I was wrong and I'm happy to retract my comment. 🙂
@@sixstringsamurai77 Then I was incorrect in my assumption. 🙂
Not sure how this is better than a Timmy, Spark, etc.
Not dissing Boss, I’m a big fan, but this is an odd release IMO. No tone control? Hmmm.
I have a Spark and I still want it. 🤣
It's based on classic boss preamps that didn't have tone controls. A normal passive tone would change the tone. A low pass would be nice but I like that they just kept the circuits and added a level control.
@@RyanMcQuenme too, and I love my spark!
This is one of those you can do without pedals. I would have probably been more interested in this pedal without the middle switch idea.
With boosters in general, there is a rule of thumb - MORE IS MORE, you should have cranked both the level and the gain knob to show us just how much signal those tubes can't handle
Yes and yes, take my money!!

Dammit boss - sigh, just take my money ( again....)
This guy toans.
🍆
So transparent I can’t even hear it do anything.
Can't hear the difference when on or off
This pedal sounds great, but theres not enough clean headroom in Nat mode. You have to have the gain up pretty high to get a push.
