    Cale's win in the first 125 at Daytona in 1970 still stands as the fastest race ever at Daytona with a 183+ average. That record stood as Nascars fastest race period until Bill Elliotts come from behind at Talladega in 1985.

    Cobra Jet vs. Super Cobra Jet: SCJ came with HD "LeMans" rods, and a different crank, balancer, flywheel and pistons. Block, heads & cam were the same for both. SCJ was only available as part of the "Drag Pak" option, which included an engine oil cooler and either 3.91:1( w/Traction-Lok carrier) or 4.30:1 (w/Detroit Locker) gears in a nodular-iron center section.

    I can imagine when the cyclone was built at the factory coming down the line they had to give it extra room in the drop lifter cage . The floor mat's are cool ,very psychedelic . I remember seeing the Plymouth barracuda in 1969 with this same floral design as a option for the vinyl roof on the car. Cool car. The Doris day show at the beginning of the show had one with her driving down the street in it. Same flower pattern 😮. Groovy man .

    When I was younger, I was always one of those guys that would "rather push a Chevy than drive anything else". I remember others using mottos such as "Mopar or no car" etc. Now that I'm in my 50s, I love them all.

      Not quite in my 50's but I'm the same way. Grew up in a Chevy household but I was a Mopar or no car guy. Now that I'm older and the cars are a less common sight I've come to appreciate all of the brands a lot more.

      I withstood all of the FORD - Found On Road Dead - taunts growing up. I did own a 68 Charger and a 70 Camaro but I was a Ford guy. Like you, now I love them all. Like so many other people I wish I would have saved one or two of them, lol.

      Im 66 and these are from a time when stock car racing WAS the only racing. Chevy was nothing but a street car. Big boys drove fords and mopars

    Very cool! My dad bought new a Dan Gurney Special Cyclone Special in 1969. He ordered the 390 engine auto and I was with him when he picked it up from the dealership in Fremont Ohio. I recently found his car on the internet having been sold in a auction in Florida. The car still looks very nice and brings back lots of memories!

    Built with pride from the fine folks at Fords world famous Lorain Assembly Plant located in Lorain,Ohio.Lorain,Ohio is about 30 miles west of Cleveland.This plant was supercar central in the '60s-'70s.Lorain built intermediate mid size Fords and Mercurys.Lorain built all the '69 Spoiler and Spoiler IIs.They also built various drag race special limited high performance Fairlanes,Torinos,Cyclones,Calientes,etc.Lorain built bodies in white to be shipped to all the factory Ford NASCAR teams.Lorain also built a few 1970 1/2 Torino Falcon 2 dr post coupe 429 Super Cobra Jets.Ultra rare muscle.Ford was also supposed to offer the Boss 429 in the Torino and Cyclone in '69 but decided to only put it in the Mustang instead.It was even listed in the '70 Ford brochure as an option on the Torino.But a few '69 Torinos and Cyclones were rumored to have been built at Lorain with the Boss 429 installed as development mules.And then a few of the new bodystyle 1970 Torinos and Cyclones were rumored to have been assembled with the Boss 429 as well.Super ultra rare muscle.Hush hush type stuff.They were supposedly dissasembled(Wink 😉😉😉😉Wink) when the engineers got their data on the feasibility of the Boss 429 program.Fast foward to the '80s and Lorain was pumping out turbo powered Tbirds and Cougars for the world to enjoy.Then the supercharged Tbirds and a few supercharged Cougars of the '90s were built in Lorain.Yes,Lorain was THE place to be if you loved Ford muscle.But a falling out with the corruption infected UAW led to the closure of Lorain Assembly.It closed for good in 2006,a victim of greed by people who didn't care about the people that worked there and their families.Sadly half the plant is now torn down.But only if the remaining walls could talk.They would tell you about cars that were built that you never knew existed.

    You gotta love a true muscle car pureist that actually drives his cars. I cant stand people that retore these cars and don't even put oil in them and tow them around. Cars were built to be driven not towed

      @robert Clymer Ya know. I've had some really valuable cars and I beat and drove the shit out of them. Like my 1971 gto survivor that I ruined off roading with in the 90s but I've also built and restored cars for people that they drive and then some that they never even fired up after they left my shop and I used to go to a lot of car shows and you see them dopes pushing there cars off trailers and into spots. And likes dude it isnt a Ferrari gt350 you have a Shelby yhey built them to beat em not stare at them

      well, no it didn't actually reflect the times. These cars were highly engineered for the 69 NASCAR tracks.

    I can personally attest to the D. Guney/C. Yarborough "post-factory" decal placement. Back in the 80s, I had a Blue/White (original - but sadly very rotted *sigh*) Spoiler II. There was one decal on the car on the lower edge of the blue painted section of the trunk lid - not on the front fenders. Being blue, it should have been a "Gurney". But the decal said Cale Yarborough Special. The car was referred to as simply "Cale" by my family and friends. It still is to this day.
    If your seeing this Mr. Winfield, were you able to make good use of my Cyclone? I don't think the car could have been put in better hands than yours. Obviously you were was an avid enthusiast of these aero Mercs.
    Also... the engine in the Spoiler IIs: 351 4bbl. Windsor - not Cleveland. The Clevelands weren't produced in the '69 model year. 1970 was the first year for the 351C

    You need to buy a Wood Brothers Cale car and install a NASCAR 427 Tunnel Port 4 spd .4.30 locker of coarse . it will set you back $100,000 I bet ? After owning one 1969 GT . 2- 69 Cobras and a Talladega i can tell you these cars were as much fun as the 1970 Hemi Cuda . They will never make the type of cars that we had back then from all four manufactures even AMC 's were AWSOME ,INDEED !

      Owning cars like those are a investment and the price keeps going higher and higher not many people that invest money can invest the money and still be able to enjoy it like classic car guys can

      if you’re just getting into the classic car market i would suggest going late 70s (post 1975) lots of cool cool stuff can be had for short money. my first car was a 77 chevy caprice that i bought for $950. great car, and it came with factory ac. super fun to drive, no catalytic converters, carb, and the smog pump was deleted by the last owner. if you want super fun for super cheap i can’t recommend a car like that more. unfortunately i had to sell the car, but i drove it for a year and it cost me less than a used camry!

    Awesome cars!
    The hood trim holes were filed on the Spoiler II and not the Taladega because it’s a Mercury. Mercs had lots of little touches that the fords didn’t get prior to 1972.
    Also as to the blue or red being painted before the white, which it was.
    Remember these are true assembly line cars. It was quicker/slash cheaper to tape off the roof than the rest of the car as the doors were already installed. If you get hands on an unpainted original (any color) there is only primer between the door hinges and the “A” pillar.

    The 428 sounded great, but owner admitted it has an aftermarket cam & exhaust. What really blew me away was how viscous that little 351 Windsor sounded, especially through a stock 50 year old exhaust system. Very impressive for a survivor car.

    This upload and the Ford upload of these special NASCAR cars has really been good. I very much enjoyed seeing the structural differences that the homologated cars had done to them. A friend of mine had the Mercury Cyclone with the 428 in it and, at the time, I never realized how special the car was.....it was the car on the right. I was driving a 440 RoadRunner and really wasn't into the Mercs at the point. He is gone now......I wonder where that car ended up....? I should have suspected what he had under the hood because he was our neighbor and we both went to high school 30 miles away and sometimes we got involved in "speed contests" on the way home and he was damn difficult to catch.

      much to the dismay of the mopar crowd who showed up with the new superbird and daytona ATdaytona in 1970 only to find the mercury was still faster. Cale set a qualifying record of 194+ and won the first 125 decisively putting him on the pole. Cales win in the first 125 set a new NASCAR record for the fastest AVERAGE speed in a race at 183+ MPH........Cales record stood as Nascars fastest race until Bill Elliotts come from behind at Talladega bumped him by 3 MPH. Cales 183+ at Daytona still stands as the fastest nascar race ever ran at Daytona. In the 500, Cale clearly had the fastest car until a blown engine took him out.

      @@davidthayer6969 Thanks.....later in life I got a 427 Ford side-oiler to run in a drag car. It was a super-impressive engine with the cross-bolted mains, forged crank/rods, pistons, and sodium-filled valves. It was obvious that Ford put a hell of a lot of thought and care into that engine. I've got a feeling that Ford maybe broke even money-wise on every one of those made. They made their money back on the 390 and 428's. I wonder what Uncle Tony would say about that.

      Logan P E .....The spoiler cars were awesome no doubt about it. The “survivor” is obviously the rarer of the two, but absolutely loved the resto. Have to say I’m a Ford guy too, but love all of it really. Mustangs from this era are my favourites but can’t afford one. Have an 88 convertible that’s a real scream to drive. She’s no 65 Shelby but makes ya laugh every time you let her rip. Easy to work on too. But that Vette! If it’s going to be a Vette, that’s the one. That generation, big block with side pipes , convertible if I get to choose but the coupe works too, and pick a direction, I’m gone. Lol. Can’t wait to hear what this guy and Uncle Tony have to say about her.

      @@lorne2691 Absolutely, I'm 59, I was lucky enough in 12th grade 1978 to get my turn owning a 67 Firebird with the factory H.O. 400ci and 4 speed but someone before me had put in the biggest cam they could find without any other parts or work to match! The idle was a radical "Kik ki ki Kik ki ki" but low end power was gone haha. It was black laquer with a professional hand painted firebird in gold color based on the later Trans Am's on the hood... Absolutely gorgeous looks but I never did anything about the giant camshaft, it just sounded too good Hahaha! Stupid kids! I've always wanted but could never afford to build a 64 Ford Falcon with a 390 or 406, my dad would never part with one of his 427 medium risers, old bugger had two of them for his F250 pick up! Oh boy that would've been my dream car! Thanks for bringing back my memories Mr Downey!
      PS, yeah I would go for the resto Cyclone too!

    I've always loved the Mercs better than the Ford counterparts. Coincidence that my first car was a Mercury? My daily for the past 6 years or so has also been (an albeit much newer) Mercury.

    It amazes me the performance differences you can get from the same engines.
    I have done one rebuild in my entire life. I am an entirely shade tree guy and I had help with that one. But the engine was in an old cargo truck I bought for a business I used to have. It was a 351 Windsor.
    These cars were running 351s on race tracks.

    I like his attitude. Drives the cars, shows them to people, and isn't too fussed when handling them. The moment I saw him drop the hood pins on the Cale Y. car, I had a confirmation that he's not some neurotic collector, sweating over a drop in value. I can also understand, why he likes to keep the mileage low on the survivor car, as some things just are irreplaceable.

    Two items for clarification. The engine in the Gurney car is an M-code 351 WINDSOR 4 Barrel. All Spoiler II's were so equipped. The Cleveland did not appear until model year 1970. Also, staggered shocks were not exclusive to the "Super" Cobra Jet. All stick shift regular Cobra Jets came staggered. Great video of great cars. But, now I have to spend the rest of my life looking for those floor mats. Argh.

    There was a older gentleman in Knoxville Tennessee that had both of these,but I used to see them at Rod Run in Pigeon Forge, TN. During the late 80's.

    First manual transmission I ever drove; it was a 1972 f100 lifted on 37 inch mud tires. I had to use a ladder to get in. It had a 428 scj in it and would snap the rear u joint in half every time you let the clutch out at 1200 rpm or higher. It was owned by the farmer I worked for and scared the crap out of me every time I drove it lol

    That first one....WOW! Put Puralator on the 1/4 panel and a gold #21 on the door and you got the best of times right there. Cale, A.J., David and me as a young boy.
    Also, the "Mercury" Race Team was called The Wood Brothers.

    Cale Yarborough has one of his cars and its on display in Florence SC at his Honda dealership. I heard that Honda was not happy he has it on display, but he settled the dispute way back years ago....its in race condition..

    Of all the cars of that era (including the aero cars) the Spoilers and Spoiler II were the best looking. Great paint schemes.
    A classic 'Vette, a Daytona, a Talladega, and a Spoiler and Spoiler II. This guy has a gold mine of cars.
    Uncle Tony looks like he loves animals. That's why he hangs around drag strips.

    wow, i love this channel... so many odd ball , quirky factory muscle cars. I dont remember seeing these cars in the magazines 40years ago. I guess they were just too rare to feature- especially those 427 cougars. Thanks youtube!

    They both sound pretty healthy to me,but since I've had a 351 Cleveland, and boy did it screw! I'm kind of impartial to that,but I wouldn't refuse either one!!! Lovely! And having a wife who's interested in cars also, you just can't beat it!!! Thanks again guys!

      That was a Windsor. The Cleveland came out in 1970. The Cleveland was Ford's Super Engine. It made big power with those wonderful Canted Valve heads. So much so Bob Glidden use to say, "It only takes one Ford to put a hundred Chevys back on the trailer"

      @@plantfeeder6677 I had a Cleveland in my 73 Montego GT, sharp looking car and the 351 Cleveland was a hell of an engine ,until the venerable rod knock showed up! It's to bad they didn't fix the lower oiling issues with them,but unfortunately they killed American production of it, unlike Australia where I believe they kept making it until 1980 or so. I wonder if they worked out the bottom end with better oiling for the longer time it was made down there. Great engine while it lasted!

      @@mynameis9057 you'd have to ask our Australian friends if that's the case about the oiling issues but someone told me the Boss 351 didn't have that issue. Don't know as all my experience came with the 289 which almost all involved keeping the oil out of places. Never spun a main or rod bearing though and we used to wind that puppy to the moon.

    I love a pretty fastback. (Also I always thought those granny wheel-wraps worked just fine, as long as I was the one putting em on. In general I prefer the sew-on leather kind, but that's what I had on my Duster pre-engine and trans swap and the interior work I did while waiting for my friend to loan me the hoist. :) (My donor car came with a pretty pristine Tuff Wheel already on the manual trans column, so what would you do? :) I toned down a lot of the browns in my 70's Duster, basically blacked out all the brown but the fake wood, kept the cool off-white split bench seats, and put in 60's style uncut loop carpet.
    Also the donkeys are adorable. I once contemplated if some kind of burro would make sense to help me get around my steeply-hilled town with my gear when my arthritis was worse. :)

      You'll want a Mule for that. Trust me. Donkeys and Burros run on their clock not yours. Mules are THE most surefooted animal, are great climbers and they're Bomb Proof too😂

    Super cool cars! Back in the early 80's a guy that lived down the street from the gas station I worked at had a Cyclone. Not sure what year it was but it seems like maybe a 67. He built a drag car out of it. First car I ever rode in that had nitrous.

    Great stuff Tony. That fella has a nice collection.
    On those Spoiler II fenders, they are not actually a standard fender cut off. I assumed that too but had a N.O.S. pair a couple years ago and was surprised to see there is a flange on the back part of the fender and the two pieces that make up the front extension are overlapped and leaded. The fenders are very heavy and came in bare metal wrapped in brown padded paper. You'd assume they'd be in red primer like other fenders but they weren't built at a Ford plant.

    once he got that carburetor all primed up with that big block vette that thing sounded badass as hell... especially with the side pipes...
    I like how he keeps so much stuff originally close to stock too most guys with that vette would have probably thrown an electric fuel pump on there you'd hear that kick on and all kinds of other stuff

    I remember going to the Ford dealership with my dad in 1969 when he bought his 69 Torino GT fastback. It had a 428 Super Cobra Jet and we got into a couple of light to light races on the way home with it and we beat a Corvette and some other car. I was only 5 years old but I still remember it very well.

    We just lost Cale who lived not far from Darlington. He was a spitfire behind the wheel .Back in the 60s and early 70s you could hang out in the pits there as long as you were respectful and gave plenty of room to the pit crews and drivers .It is a complete different experience now without special hot passes. The last time I went to Darlington my ex wife had somehow arranged that .I have not been back as it is disappointing to not be able to interact. I understand why completely thought.
