The fact that Joey knew the G# chord would've gotten him pretty far for a beginner. It's a basic barre chord shape that can be moved up and down the fret board to play most basic and minor chords but it's quite challenging for beginners. Phoebe only really knows E, A, and D which are very basic chords that basically anyone can learn. If Joey was more persistent and actually kept learning, Phoebe would've ironically had a lot to learn from him!
