I love the question near the end "ARE YOU STUPID?" yes the characters are clueless. I dunno which sonic game I was watching someone play but Eggman had had his villain reveal and just then one of the secondary characters just wanders through the scene carrying the Chaos Emerald out in front of them like they had a lovely plate of cookies and not a massively important piece of Villain Bait.

I never played sonic growing up and I hate to say it but the game doesn’t seem like much fun. Nerissa’s streams are fantastic but the actual game seems painful to play with nonsense camera angles and attacks coming from offscreen or enemies placed perfectly for you to run into if you’re going fast in a game supposedly about going fast
They didn't quite figure out 3D yet then. This was 3 years before the first Halo. Adventure games build on series tropes from the genesis games. For example, when landing on a speed pad, classic gamers are conditioned to either let go or rolling attack so the game can go into the preset courses. If you jumped from the genesis games you're generally not going to fight the camera when the game is trying to play itself. Unfortunately, if you're jumping in from Adventure, then you'll miss waht's supposed to be an unwritten rule.
Luckily, you don't have to play the 1998 jank to experience SAB. The mod community is awesome for the game. With Unleashed or Generation, there's enough mods to recreat the whole Adventure era games.
