- Unai Emery lead Aston Villa to an monumental season this video analyses and evaluates the season as they now prepare for a Champions League campaign as their reward for such a fantastic year. Monchi & Emery have been very active in the transfer market and as well as assessing what's been done, I look at what Summer transfers could happen, what areas/players are needed to maintain this trajecotry.

FYI, no dropping into the Europa in the new format
Ah really! Great contribution thanks very much!! 👊🍻
Lovely stuff Quinny. What a season! Only thing really is your ‘break out star’ it’s Bailey. Diaby was alright with some excellent moments some frustrating games & will improve a tonne next year hopefully! But Bailey was unreal all season UTV
Agreed. Bailey was the man.
Diaby was poor to average, especially considering his fee.
Great video - one bone of contention is saying the Arsenal game win was a copy and paste of the Man City game.
Villa dominated Man city like no one has ever done before. Man City were lucky to come away with a one goal defeat, whereas Arsenal dominated Villa.
Finally, Diaby had a good season, especially for a debut, but was completely outshone by Bailey. Hopefully Diaby can ‘do a Bailey’ next season
but the second Arsenal game was more like the Man City victory. we did the gunners proper that time.
Fair on the city/arsenal games 🍻
I think bailey was great but I don't think you get that Bailey without Diaby , even for the off field and training aspect of it on top of the link up play on the pitch , I do think that's been an element of both of their success.
@@Quinny3001 interesting point.
By the end of the season, Villa were running on fumes as the squad depth were tested and injuries took their toll. Villa's stats would have been even better but for that last stretch where we were limping over the line. It would be great if Unai Emery can strengthen our quality and squad depth for next season, because we'll need it to continue progressing.
Excellent analysis Quinny - I subscribed because of this.
Incomings required, returnees and comments on the squad
- a better #2 back up to Martinez
- agreed we need another CB. Mings coming back will be huge. Suspect Carlos is not an Unai style CB, perhaps not mobile or quick enough. So Mings + one more to potentially replace Carlos.
- I like Matty Cash, but a lot of Villa fans are asking for an upgrade at RB
- losing Kamara was a huge blow for us, a magnificent player who performs his role quietly and effectively, we need a back up for him
- Rogers looked like one for the future but was thrown into the deep end this season due to other injuries, and he performed very well. With a full pre-season under Unai he will be some player next year
- initially I was lukewarm about Barkley returning, but it makes more and more sense when you think about it (another smart purchase)
- Buendia coming back adds a bit of magic
- in my view Bailey was our standout player, not Diaby (who blew hot and cold). Again pre-seasons under Unai will only lift these guys higher
- And agreed, we were exceptionally lucky that Watkins stayed fit all season. Any major injury to him creates a huge hole. We need a back up for Olly.
- Duran is a funny one. A young raw talent. Either scores a worldy or can be a bit pants. Also a very different player to Watkins, so offers something different but not a like-for-like backup
Leaving the club in this summer transfer window?
- this will be really interesting/worrying for us Villa fans
- rumours of Dougie leaving? 26 and in his prime. We would want huge money (and that can be difficult in an FFP world, where prices seem to have softened)
- Do we have to let Ramsey go due to FFP requirements?
- Digne perhaps? Rumours are that he is on big wages. Again, a fee for him would help FFP concerns
Overall, excellent review from you. Really enjoyed it.
I would agree with most of this. My only slight disagreement would be about transfers in. I would prioritise a new DM. Our form and defensive solidity really suffered after Kamara got injured, and it seems he won't be fit until several months into next season. A decent understudy would be great business.
As a villa fan this video is brilliant Quinny.. a new sub from me 👍 zaniolo really didnt do that much all season scored 2 very very important goals against Sheffield utd at home and west ham away but Barkley coming back is absolutely unreal business cuz hes essentially on a free and loads better than zaniolo ever was..
Diaby was good but in glimpses more to come from him next season hopefully double figures in goals or assists
Bailey was the absolute stand out player along with the obvious ollie Watkins. But great video and ill be looking forward to it more next season cheers mate 👍
For me the breakout star is unequivocally Bailey. I thought Diaby was much weaker across the whole season. Started the season on fire but found himself benched a lot from January onwards. Whereas Bailey was consistent all season he was unplayable on so many occasions and he just became the leader/maverick we always wanted him to be. Up the Bailey, up the Villa! X
Depending on Summer transfers, i would predict Villa to finish in top 3
I like the look of Duran, but he needs to get his head sorted out.
Great pod too though Quinny. Love your analysis and down to earth takes!
got my sub, talk about villa more and i'll be liking all these videos :P
Great vid mate 👏
we have been averaging 2 points a game (aka camps league form) since emery took over , my bet before mings got injured in the first game was 3rd 4th 5th when he got injured 4th 5th 6th so exceeded my without mings expectations , but why wouldn't we think we were going to carry on our form from last year
Excellent analysis. You talked me into grudgingly liking the Ross Barkley move. Watching all the manager drama among teams around us, it's a huge relief to know that we have Unai Emery locked in for the foreseeable future and that all of management, from top to bottom, are fully on board with the project. This transfer market is going to be crucial for maintaining our progress, but it's easy to feel confident. Up the Villa!
Yeah Emery signed that after I rec'd , going from strength to strength
Great post Quinny. Aston VIlla and indeed the football league in England itself owes a lot to a Scotsman and founder, William McGregor. A reason maybe for all Scots to have the Mighty Villa as their second team !
Superb stuff again mate.
Who's your team btw? My Scottish side are...
Put it this way the Conference 1st round draw was PERFECT for me ;-)
Yeah I suppose the colours help you with that too 😂 I'm a Celtic fan 🍀🍻
We absolutely missed Kamara. There were some games after Christmas where we needed him so badly
Yeah that was a proper Hammer blow, no one else does his shift quite like him
@@Quinny3001 Three ACL injuries in one season was brutal.
Only thing I disagree with you Quinny is Diaby. His numbers hide his performances which seemed to get worse and worse. Maybe he's trying too hard, maybe he's too lightweight, no idea but he's been a frustrating player to watch for the best part. Hope he can improve and deliver more next season. There's no doubt he has the talent.
Hopefully, Diaby can follow in Leon Bailey's footsteps, who started his tenure at the club being very hit and miss and also injury prone. But this season, Leon Bailey was a man transformed.
It took Bailey 2 seasons plus to find his feet....right?
@@groovetraxxxgingerbreadman1282 Yeah, I'm looking forward to Diaby working with Unai.
Cameron Archer has a buy back relegation clause apparently, so we're obliged to buy him back.
Oh wow really!? That's a great bit of intel, happy to see him return?
Diaby is the "breakout star"???????????? What are you talking about?????????????
He was a huge disappointment. Rogers is the breakout star.
I watched plenty of villa this season Mon Frére feel free to check out all the analysis when you get the chance 👌🍻
@Quinny3001 Diaby was a huge disappointment and was in and out of the team all season. Calling him the breakout star doesn't make any sense. He was poor to average for large parts of the season. He had a handful of good performances and he DID NOT link up well with Watkins.
He cost a lot of money and arrived with a big reputation. Rogers arrived at a very low fee and easily outperformed Diaby. There's no question!!! You really need to talk to some Villa fans.
@@sjtdxitditsitdurzirxur5926 sorry it's upset you bud but 2 things, 1) my expectations were maybe initially lower than yours that's why I think he's done well and you don't? 2) I feel I gave pretty valid reasons in the vid, again sorry you disagree ofc 🍻
OK, you're absolutely clueless. You clearly haven't followed Villa at all. Diaby has been on the bench for most of the season.
