I know everyone in the comments has said this already but the MP28 probably wasn't the 'nicest' of the interwar guns. The MP34 had a better magazine (double stack + double feed) and the way the bolt was designed it allowed for a much longer recoil spring that extended all the way into the stock, which in turn made it smoother shooting as the recoil was all contained by the spring tension and the bolt didn't travel all the way to the end of the gun before being pushed back by the spring pressure. This really makes a huge difference in felt recoil and how smooth shooting a gun feels, and it's a design that was later copied by the Czech ZK-383, which is also an excellent sub-machine gun. In addition to the better action, the MP34 also had a more complex construction and arguably better overall finish as well as additional bells and whistles that you just don't find on the MP28. Don't get me wrong, the MP28 really is a beautiful gun; but it's essentially an older design which was updated a bit and given a makeover. The MP34, in addition to that fine 1930's German/Swiss craftsmanship also has a number of mechanical and superficial features that make it a more modern and luxurious SMG.

Also, that picture with the Japanese soldier IS 100% an MP34, not a 28.

It actually is kind of funny that this thing is called a Bergmann seeing as right on the magwell is written SYSTEM SCHMEISSER PATENT

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Schreier at 3:20. While I agree that the 1921 Colt Thompson is a very well made weapon, most enthusiasts consider the Austrian Steyr-Solothurn MP34 to be the highest quality submachinegun ever produced. I have one which I can be seen firing here th-cam.com/video/gXHxadP6B3g/w-d-xo.html . The steel, wood, fit, finish, function and overall quality of the MP34 is really second to none and hence it is known as the Rolls Royce of submachineguns!

I need some help dating my MP28 since Google is useless and keeps giving me articles about transformers. The serial number is in the mid 14,000 range. The front plate has a screw on top of it but it doesn't have the vent hole on the bottom. Does anyone know what year approximately it was manufactured or what contract it may have been a part of? Thanks.

Worth noting the British copied this weapon and called it the Lanchester. And they added a bayonet lug
