Back in the early 80's, I had just finished a show at Billy Bob's and went looking for some music. Wound up at a hotel and heard some BIG music coming from the ballroom. I crashed the party and locked into the band. These guys had red jackets on that said, "The Sidemen" on 'em. The guitar player was Buddy and he was SCREAMIN" on a beat up Strat. I introduced myself during a break and that started a 30+ year acquaintance with one of best guitar players (and gentlemen) on the planet.
Me and a friend drove to Jasper, IN from Louisville, KY to see John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in about 94/95. He LIT that place up. Been a fan ever since.
This is some of the best music since Pete Green was tearing it up many decades ago. Buddy has a lovely feel for this genre. New discovery for me I hope to catch him live. Like Green - great vocalist as well as special special guitar player.
As a Peter Green fan of many years I agree with you. I miss the heck out of the "Green God" when he was away those years I still knew he was around and would gift us with his talent again. Buddy may not have the same tone but he's got the licks and soul. Playing or singing..
I just can't enough of listening this piece of art over and over again. So much talent and heart in this. And the way Buddy treats his band not trying to steal the show but still giving all he's got and making it look easy.
Buddy is in a class by himself vocally and with his incredible guitar work. As a guitar player myself of over 50 years I have seen a lot of players but very few in that elite class with Buddy Whittington.
I absolutely agree with you. Same as Roy Buchanan, one of the greatest (relatively) unknown and unappreciated guitarists. When he played at Mayall's 70th birthday gig, he showed a clean pair of heels to the other guest guitarists. He is a humble man as well. Amongst his work, are some stand out performances with the late, great Gary Moore.
Buddy is my "Hometown Hero"... One of the Best in the Business!!... When you see him like you're always impressed!!! And you'll never meet a nicer guy!!! He's the GREATEST!!

One of the most underrated guitarist/singers out there. I wish musicians like him would record live. It's as if the studio removes some of their context.
This is a strange world we live in. Someone this good and there's no one with high quality recording equipment getting this all down. Performances are often magical and can not be repeated. Oh sure it's in the Akashic records but most can't play that back (smile). Ol Buddy can play that thang and aint't a bad singer either.
Buddy showed up both Clapton and Mick Taylor at Mayalls 70th Birthday concert. Its obvious that BETTERTHANDEAD needs to figure out why they have a Comments section against these you tube posts.
I guess Bo Didley said it best "you can't judge a book by looking at the cover". Buddy doesn't quite fit the airbushed model look of today but man that boy can play (and sing).
who are you ??? The comment monitor ???............let me tell you who cares........me for one ! I have been playing semi pro guitar for 40 years and I love to read/hear peoples opinions regarding guitar related stuff...............and this fella can say whatever he likes....so fuck off.!!!!.......PS ..as it happens, eric clapped out is one of the most over rated players on the planet, so the comment and observation is valid and worthwhile........if its ok with you for me to comment of course ?

This guy, Buddy, deserves more than 100k views. I consider myself lucky to get to "find" this masterpiece.
Peter Marinko me too
What do you mean "find". Are you implying that actually you didn't really find it?

He does play around Dallas FtWorth, always a fantastic show.

With Buddy pushing it, that Dr Z sings... I'm a blues player and I also use the middle pickup on my Strats also. What a sound!

My absolute favorite Freddie king song. A great cover emotion my friends. On another note excellent screen name Steve thanks for the upload
Woaw ! How can i never about Him before ? So much soul !
3 years laters. I didn’t find better version.
Popa Chubby 2 .
Amazing take on this tune- top notch vocal and guitar work.
Great cover of my very favorite Freddie King tune.
Thank you mr Whittington, there's no words to explain it.
Whoa, nice find! I just started working this piece for the song catalog...
Buddy is my "Hometown Hero"... One of the Best in the Business!!... When you see him like you're always impressed!!! And you'll never meet a nicer guy!!! He's the GREATEST!!
I was at this gig, WickedUncleSteve, it was a blinder. I enjoyed the David Sinclair trio (as it was then) as well. Thanks for posting :)
Do you remember Roger Cotton (RIP) taking the piss out of Darby Todd and his 'London ways'? :)
Another Texan who can pick, pluck A strum. & sing too. He was darn good with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers too the big ol boy...
Just as sweet today as day one!!!! Love me some Bud on vocals and wonderful guitar!!!
Beautiful music!
I love Buddy’s playing, followed him since Spinning Coin.
Oh My.........Still one of the Best Guitar Players in the world. Glad to know him. Alright Buddy!
Been telling people for years! One of the best!!!!!
Don't forget Don Nix, the Memphis musician and songwriter, who wrote this song! Mr. Whittington and this group do an excellent job of performing it!
Love It.....Great Vocals. Great Band. Alright Buddy!
Great... and what an ending... just crazy good!
Que belleza de canción y de interpretación
Great solo
No better of example of a guitarist mimicking a vocalist than buddys solo at 3.46. Perfection.
no puedes ser tan buena esta cancion
Did he tribute that to Michael Burks the 'Iron man"? I thought he said Bobby Burks. My hearing must be failing.
Wow, this is amazing! Congrats!
solo didnt take me anywhere to dry no vibe just kinda plain
R.I.P. dear Roger Cotton.

one of the best 4 sho
Impressive!
...John Mayall knows how and who choose
This where I first came across him, when he was with the Bluesbreakers, and I have followed him since - a superb guitarist!
excellent..
Sweet!!!
Buddy played with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.
Класс! Лабает гарно!!

norder smith Unfortunally that is the truth.
Awesome
Grandma Mary
yep brilliant
I guess Bo Didley said it best "you can't judge a book by looking at the cover". Buddy doesn't quite fit the airbushed model look of today but man that boy can play (and sing).
Wicked Strat tone.
John Hodge great player, great strat, great dr z amp... great equation
Nice sound mini Guitar
У Buddy отличная блюзовая техника игры на гитаре.
Beating out triplets strongly . It's the feature of Whittington. So nice.
Good look, B H 💯 🎉 John C. Krp 🎉

Holy shit. That is all.
como alguien puede darle pulgar abajo
Well, holy fargin' CRAP, that big ol' boy can play.

Top Notch
played with John Mellow
Buddy's one of the best ever, glad the doesn't live upstairs though.
класс.....
i like his solo more than king's one
Wow.. who the hell is that?
Crown Commando. Say hi from france
How in the world does this have more likes and views than the original magic Sam who actually wrote the song
Buddy should do a "duelling strats" with Popa Chubby :) I know he's much better though..
Lovely cover, Popa Chubby and yourself are a very close 2nd to Freddie King.
I like the keyboard sounds if he used a piano it would be awesome..
wuuuuaua¡¡¡
formidable bluesman
Clapton would shit himself trying to follow that solo.
norder smith Who cares?
who are you ??? The comment monitor ???............let me tell you who cares........me for one ! Yes he would
Bubbacat54 Definitely overrated.
that strat looks like a baby guitar
Nice , but nothing like the real black blues feeling for this
Now I like keyboards as much as the guy but enough is too much here.
You have given up.
Too much vocally....
