  • Watch as Michelle demonstrates a 1960's Mod look on her friend Haleigh! Think full-on Twiggy makeup, with floating liner, drawn-on lashes under the eye and two sets of lashes on top!
    **Both Haleigh and I were tested for Covid right before we shot this video, which is why we both felt comfortable shooting this without masks or PPE. All brushes and makeup were thoroughly sanitized.**

    This was an amazing tutorial and absolutely worth the 45 minute watch! I learned some tips for makeup in general (using taupe to mark) and it was really satisfying to watch this bold makeup look come together with beautiful results. Haleigh has a perfect face for this type of makeup!

    In the late 70's, the mall my sister worked at sold Biba and I would pick up stuff from that line on pay day. I wish I still had it. Also as a teenager in the 70's there was a line called pure magic by Max Factor that sold makeup for young girls. Their shades were mostly shades they kept from the 60's. Frosted lipsticks, pastel shadows. It was a fabulous fun line to wear.

    My Mum had a Mary Quant crayon makeup set in a cool little silver tin. The crayons were muted blues, plums, greens and pewter with a metallic gleam... I thought that they were the height of glamour

    Speaking as someone who started doing makeup before youtube or internet existed..... magazines are where I got my info on how to do makeup
    And it was always the same damn look. And always the whole “what season are you?”. And then there was a small group of colors that were the ones you should use. Hate those colors? Too bad for you!
    As a daughter who’s dad had the deep dark Mediterranean skin and my mom was a freckled redhead..... I was never able to know what season I was 🤣

    • @MyVintageLove

    Great video as always. I like your thought that nothing exists in the vacuum. I find it really fascinating how we can trace social-political changes in such "shallow" things as fashion or make-up. The 20th century was undoubtly the most revolutinary for woman appearance. I wonder whether we can find similar examples in other centuries…? Maybe a tip for a video sometime. Happy Easter!

    I love, love this series! You’re informative and skilled and It’s such a treat for a vintage glamour enthusiast like myself. Could you consider doing a series where you replicate looks of old Hollywood icons such as Carole Lombard, Hedy Lamarr and Rita Hayworth? Their looks have similar elements such as a red lip but it would be fun to see how each look is unique ❤️

      @@MyVintageLove ♥ Michelle, I'd be so grateful if you could answer this question for me. Were shimmery/sheeny eyeshadows and dewy skin a thing in the the 1930s/1940s or was an all matte look truly what was in vogue? It's well known that the 30s/40s look was matte but I've come across some vintage sources that mention shimmery eyeshadow and the importance of a "healthy glow". We also know that Marilyn wore Vaseline under her makeup (although that was later in the 50s). I also don't know if 30s/40s (white) women preferred being pale or loved the look of a tan because I've seen some conflicting sources on that as well. Thank you 😊

    • @MyVintageLove
      @MyVintageLove  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Noura-bv9pv Great questions! Shimmery eyeshadows did exist in the 30s and 40s but weren't widely used from what I've seen in my research. But they did exist for the more daring ladies to use. Matte skin was by and large the preferred texture for the skin. Dewy doesn't *really* become very popular until the 60s. The 1920's was when tans became desirable to (white) ladies, and I do think that trend continued into the 30s/40s, but I think it was dependent on where you were living and the time of year. I have a French 30s magazine that has a whole section talking about the "bronzed look for summer" so that was definitely thing. It's always important to remember that when we're talking about these trends we're using broad strokes to describe what was happening at the time, and they could vary somewhat depending on location, season, year, etc.

    • @Noura-bv9pv
      @Noura-bv9pv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyVintageLove That all makes so much sense! thank you ♥ I'm always perplexed when I watch a 40s makeup tutorial and the makeup artist recommends wearing a lighter foundation because it's not flattering and as it turns out, not even historically accurate 😁 I think it might be influenced by the numerous digitally colorized photos you find on the internet which aren't always accurate and sometimes have the ladies look a bit washed out
