- I decided to update my 2010 Macbook Pro with the new Catalina patcher by Dosdude1. I wanted to show the process I went through in this video.
Process was straightforward and pretty easy - only thing I had to do was turn off system integrity protection and was able to perform an in place upgrade just fine.
If you want to check out the patcher for yourself, go here:

Loves from Turkey ❤️❤️❤️ I struggled a lot and ran into constant errors. I have tried every method written and described. But I failed. The method you said is the best and I succeeded. Thank you soooooo much 💕🎉🤗
I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2010) that I've recently upgraded internally that was running on OS X High Sierra. This is by far the clearest tutorial on how to install OS X Catalina on the MacBook Pro. My MacBook Pro now runs smoothly for exactly what I intended to use it for! Thank you! Good luck!
is catalin running smoothly? for surfing the internet, watching youtube or netfflix? on my MBP 2010 (high Sierra) I play on hearthstone and this game run very good.
Thank you very much for this. I just updated my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I definitely recommend going into the settings after you complete this and go to accessibility, and marking “Reduce Transparency”. It does seem slow at first, but once I marked that it worked just fine. As long as you follow the instructions in this video you are set. Thanks again!
Is there anything you can recommend to do after this, because i am using MB pro late 2011 running mac os hight sierra then updated to catalina , it seems fine but kinda slower than high sierra, even the disk speed is slower than before

Just picked up a 2010 MacBook Pro and threw in 16gigs of ram, 512gig SSD and I swapped out the cd drive for a 4tb mechanical drive and I followed your tutorial and it feels brand new!
Wow i thought it support maximum 8 GB RAM
@@mdptyo I believe only the 15 inch model supports up to 8 gigs of ram however you can get up to a maximum of 16 gigs in the 13 inch models
@@e46m3s oh nice. I have mbp mid 2010 13 inch for daily usage. Will be upgrade it to max ram 😁
@@mdptyo that's amazing haha, I also recommend that you reapply the thermal paste because mine used to go up to 90 degrees (celicius)
@@mdptyo it does support 16g
Heck yes! Just did this on my mid 2010 macbook pro 13 inch and got 10.15.7 and was able to finally install windows office (because they require 10.14.0 at least) and now saved 1600 bucks as opposed to getting a new macbook because of this! I had 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo but had previously upgrade myself to 500 gb SSD and 16 gb of ram and now it runs perfect!
Are you really doing well, Catalina?
I also have SSD and 8 gb ram and i think do it on my macbook pro 13 2010
Nice job. I updated a 2008 iMac and a 2010 Mac Mini to Catalina (both Core 2 Duo processors) Everything worked fine; however, I reverted back to El Capitan on both due to performance issues, nothing out of the ordinary, but both systems ran better, less sluggish with El Capitan. Both are systems that I do not use regularly. So no big deal. Just because there is a new OSX out doesn't necessarily imply that the older systems will perform any better and in most cases will not, IMHO. I would highly recommend prior to patching, install more RAM an a SSD. Those two items will provide the biggest boost to system performance.
If you want speed remove MacOS and install Linux Mint or MX Linux... Even on an old MacBookPro from 2008 it makes a big difference in speed...
This has been a life saver. I thought I was going to have to buy a new MacBook.
How its going?
The guy who made it did a tutorial
BRO THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU WERE SO MUCH HELP!!! I literally had your video up all day because of how long the updates and restarts were
6:37 when I get to this part I cannot select my volume and it says „ You must be running Catalina 10.15 or later to install onto this volume“ I don‘t get why though. I‘m running a 2010 MacBook Pro as well. Do you perhaps know the solution?
when u reset the macbook after setting the SIP, u need to do everything again, then this will not happen
Hi Sir, I just installed Catalina it's work well after 6 hours installation and before install I was on Problem of Restart automatically in my Mac, now everything is working Properly Thanks 😊😊😊
hi, what's your MacBook and macos version before you update to catalina? Thanks
So I have a 2010 Mac book when you updated it did it give you the latest apps as well because mine has safari when it was shaped like a compass with actually N,S,E,W labeled on it
It should give you the latest apps. I did check for updates and didn’t find any new ones.
Early 2011 MBP 13 with SSD and 4mb. I was skeptical about the patcher but it seems to run just as smooth with Catalina as it did High Sierra.
i just installed it right now so easy, thnx lans Tech
does it work fine?
How long should this take lol im stuck on a screen with no words just an apple and loading screen 3/4 full bar
Awesome and LIKED! Thanks for posting this. Planning on doing this for my 2010 MBP. How do you find Catalina's performance on the 2010? Is it pretty snappy ?
Yep it works pretty well. I think the only hiccup I notice is due to the 4GB of Ram. Other than that it’s great 👍
Do you mean that if i wanna upgrade my 2010 MBP to catalina, i also need to upgrade my ram?
syahmi ikhwan ezani Hes not saying that, but it’s ideal to upgrade your ram since the new OS uses a lot of ram (as expected since the future demands more power)
I gave a 2010-Mid MacBook Pro away to my unk. Because, I was told by so many sites it could only be updated if it was 2012 mac. So, I got a new one lol. Anyways, he later, asked to update it. We stumbled on your vid and got it updated to Catalina ⭐ That was awesome. Appreciate it. First had to update to 10.13 from 10.11 . Then 10.15 from 10.13. ~Stay blessed
One question I’d like to get answered what’s with the relocated items folder on the top right hand corner of your screen ? I know this because I have onetoo and I don’t know what I should do with it .... can’t delete it
Ray R Vidal I believe it’s just older now incompatible system files that are no longer needed. Macrumors has an explanation on their site: www.macrumors.com/guide/relocated-items/
Nerve wracking to do, but it’s working great. I was unable to update office with High Sierra so decided to risk it. Glad I watched your video. Cheers.
Could I do this with my Mac book pro 2011?? And how likely would there be an issue
Yes you can, just check on his website to see if there are any compatibility issues, I think only one I’d be concerned with is the graphics issue on some models.
So I went back where I left off and got all the to where you got the new background. I got a message the the software was not compatible, I hit continue and a screen with 2 patches . Fingers crossed 🤞 So says it’s the new update but computer still run really slow
Thanks so much! Just installed this today on my Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro using your instructions and it went incredibly smoothly.
Sip Utility not available
Love that this still works today 🎉
Did you install and SSD and upgraded the RAM as well before installing this? Mine's still not upgraded
I upgraded the SSD, but it still has the 4GB of ram
@@IansTech I installed the OS into its traditional hard drive and the MBP is painfully slow. Should I upgrade the drive to an SSD and leave the 4 GB of Ram in it? Will it make a difference later on? And how will I clone the contents of my drive to an SSD? Can Disk Utility do it?
@@geanpaulofrancois8269 SSD is the No1 upgrade for older systems. It will run better than new...
@@geoman1420 thanks man!
Great and very easy. I have a question before I do this. Will I loose any of my data from my Mac before I do this?
You shouldn’t. But please make sure to do a full backup just in case
@@IansTech thanks dude. it was successful upgrade. it did slow down my mac so i upgraded my ram to 16gb but its still bit slower. you have any suggestion how to fix it?
Dosdude is a hero!!!
Wondering if sidecar works on this Mac... technically it can, because it’s a software limitation, but might too old to get support? Also is Handoff/AirDrop work on this machine?
Hi, just a quick question thou. Do i need to re-enable sid after done installation? or just let it be?
I think I just left it as is. If you need to update it later you might forget about that being enabled and it wouldn’t work
Hi Ian! I followed all your steps and I’m on an identical machine but when it downloaded it does not come up to reboot it?
two years later im here trying to do the same on my 11 year old device. LOL
That worked??
Same here
@@dikshasehrawat3332 Yes
@@dikshasehrawat3332 you too have the same machine ?
I saw so many videos about installation of catalina but this video is the best. The other ones are making everything complicated and their videos seem professional but they are not.
Install it on macbook air late 2011, work perfect
Thank you
Thank you I have same model
geekbench?
has it sloweed your laptop down ? iv upgraded the ram and ssd
I have the same model as yours and I couldn't install it on a brand new hp ssd, can you tell me what ssd do you have?
Thank you! Very clear and helpful. Question - do you enable SIP when done? I thought dosdude indicated you don't. If you don't does it make you more vulnerable to being hacked? We're preparing computers for donation or sale. Thanks.
It successfully installed it on my iMac 2009 but it doesn’t allow me to go to recovery mode anyone know how to fix this ?
Marco Chavez Go to the r/CatalinaPatcher subreddit and post there
Same thing happened to me
Had this done for my MacBook 2010 (not pro) and worked great. One thing missing is Air Play. Settings on n Mac as well as smart TV are correct. Due to the age of my Mac is not going to be available?
Great instructions, thank you so much! Gave some new life into my old 2010 Macbook Air
How is it going now? Is it working well? Im thinking to upgrade it too
I Just tried doing this today and when i downloaded the versión of Catalina like they do in the video. After using the patch it guves you an option to choosing an existing file, i try to instal Catalina a Windows will. Pop UP and say its a damage downloaded version of Catalina.
@@justsomeone9218 works great still
Is this procedure for a clean OSX Catalina install? Or is it an upgrade? I just want to upgrade OSX without installing all the apps.
After the installation, can I open SIP for my MacBook Pro Mid 2010
Kerimcan Çalışan I believe you can re-enable it yes
Need help. After installation when i go back in recovery mode into terminal I am able to turn SIP back into enable mode. Then I restart. When I'm in my normal mode and go into terminal to check the status of SIP it says disable and if I try to change it it tells me that it can only be done in recovery mode. If you have info about how I can resolve this i would appreciate it. Thanks
@@IansTech What did I do wrong computer still runs really slow
@@ldisalvo88 that’s because it’s a newer OS with more features and software then the older OS so you can expect it to run slower
Thanks, it worked for my MacBook Pro 2010 version. You saved me money. What do you do with the patcher, should you keep it for future updates or delete it?
I’d keep it because if you run into a driver issue you can redo the drivers.
When I get to the installation stage on my Mac Mini 2010 it says SIP Enabled. SIP must be disabled in order for the in-place installation to function correctly. To Disable SIP, boot off your system's Recovery partition, or an OS X 10.11 or later installer, open Terminal, and run "csrutil disable".... How should I go about installation at this point? Thanks!
Once you have disabled it you basically need to start the process again for the installation. I know it’s a pain but it will work now with that disabled.
Edward Robison he shows you in the video how to do it.
may mac got stuck, what should i dooo
It doesn’t allow me to install to this machine what should I do
What error are you getting?
Same except I can’t click it
Out of all the patchers available, which one works best on the MacBook Pro mid 2010?
THANKS IT REALLY WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah no shit
So then, you install the system updates or only the ones from the patcher?
Thanks for showing how to disable sip lots video don’t show this. Thanks so much👍👍👍👍👍👍
Suggestion: Re-enable SIP after installation.
Chico Foonman how can I do that ?
Chico Foonman Does anything bad happend if I enable it back or leave it how it is ?
Is it possible to change the language?
7:21 - followed step by step, when I reset it the utilities page came back up and not the log in screen. Which do I click?
5:07 I could tell he has the iPhone 11 or 11 pro just by that
Your the best ! , I have a MacBook 2009 and a MacBook Pro mid 2010 and I followed your instructions that you made sound so easy on my Pro and everything works perfectly! Yes I notice my PC runs slower a bit , although you can’t beat working newly on a old device. If I ever decide to switch back I would definitely come to you .
Is there any possibility to unlock the airplay for MacOS 2012?
Thanks for making and sharing this helpful video. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010. I used to use Final Cut Pro and it was working fine but now it’s very slow even though I don’t use any heavy software on it. I actually haven’t used it for some time now.
Could you suggest me a software or tool to check the issues please?
I also would like to upgrade it, so could you suggest me what part I can upgrade and what maximum capacity I should get for those parts? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video. One question - how long does it take to compete the installation (particularly from 7.05 of your video)?
it says at mine that i cant install it to the machine
My computer says: The version macOS10.15.7 cannot be installed on this computer. It is the same build as you have in the video. What am I doing wrong?
Hi! thanks for the video. I keep getting Error: Could not locate the correct entry in the CatalogURL. Cannot continue when downloading the OS, can you help please. thanks
What if it said it didn’t support the file ? And won’t let me continue after the download
MacBook Pro5.5 has been completely installed on 10.15.7 using macOS Catalina Patcher. I want to install Windows 10 now. Windows 10 was installed by booting the assistant through Boot Camp. But the Boot Camp driver cannot be installed. This driver only supports Windows 7. It was found on the Apple official website that MacBook Pro5.5 only has drivers for Windows 7 systems. How to solve this problem?
I'm sure you've moved way past this project, but I picked up a Pro2010 here recently and it is giving me Error while installing to disk. And tells me to try again later I've tried mutile versions of the patcher and nothing seems to work.
I am curious if 2010 macbook with this upgrade will slow down the laptop?
Sir. How again enable sip .. coz its not going to recovery mode
Thanks alot for your effort, But after completing the installation I tried to enable the CSRUTIL and after doing restart and hold the CMND+R the screen freezes!! how to solve that?
I’m struggling I used csrutildisable but doesn’t work
Hi Ian I have got to the install part when I click agree I get this message checking "(null)" and it seems to freeze
Tried a lot of times to install this, thanks to your tutorial I finally fixt it.
Did u guys change your hard drive format from Journalized Extended to APFS?
Hi there, what if you don’t receive “install to this machine” as an installation method. I am only able to select the other two options. “Install to this machine” is visible but I’m not able to select it.
The video says command r. Does that mean press the command button and the letter r simultaneously ? Thx
Followed the steps spot on, once everything had installed to drive successfully, the ‘install MacOS Catalina’ programme completely crashes with a status of ‘Application not responding’ and no window opens after 30 minutes of waiting. Are you able advice on this? I would much appreciate.
After following instructions the program cannot be installed on my computer for what reason I don’t know it says cannot be installed Catalina 10.1 5.7 cannot be installed not sure if I am doing anything wrong but I followed your step-by-step process and it cannot be installed
Did u lose all your files?? Or were you able to keep them?
The Patch updater did not show up for me after installing, my wifi now doesn’t work. How do I get ahold of that patch update for bug fixes
hi i just bought my 2010 macbook of of face book i logged in with no problem but i didnt let me download apps do you think by updating it like this will change that
Great Video Solution. I have a question.. If I need to put the Catalina on a NEW SDD , I have to install first the HighSierra and then make your installation guide....twice installation ?
I believe so. Unless you were to clone the original drive to the new one instead

Do you need to re-enable sip afterwards ?
hi thanks so much for this video. I am just a little concerned because my Mac loads but then it gets stuck right around the middle of the loading process
My Macbook 5,5 Mid 2009 with 4gb of Ram and 128GB of SSD and immediately noticed improvements and first its snappier somehow than my high sierra and its effecient for your battery the only drawback is some apps didnt work and it heats up quite quickly when plugged in
will there be any problem with wifi and other features?
Will this work on 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro I tried to disable the sip it does nothing. Can you help
What to do if you have both an SSD & HDD? I want to keep the OS on the SD and the extra files and clutter on the HD. Thank you for you tutorial

Hello, maybe i ask an stupid quesion ! But i ask ! We really need to save all files before do this ?! Because, when highsierra was comin, when i went from mountain lion to high sierra i did not need to save my data ! Here we need for Catalina ?
Omar Benkebouche is you are upgrading, back up your files. I would not take the chance.
Ians Tech yes i have a many ssd external for save my files ! So ! Let’go ! Thanks for this video !! 🙏🏼👌🏽
Do you recommend re-enabling what you disabled to run this?
Should you enable SIP after installing?
hi again
another question, if you update and deactivate / finally activate CSR and if you change hdd to ssd and take a backup, does something happen in the system?
what shall we do if the install to machine option is not being selected
I can update directly from EL CAPITAN to CATALINA ?
Possible problem with APFS ? So i can Install package .. or only whit high sierra ?
thanks for the video, but will i lose all my files and data thats on my mac when i perform this operation??
If you do an upgrade, you won’t. Please back up your computer though no matter what!
Hello, I have a MacBook Pro (13-Inch, Mid 2010) with OS X El Capital (Version 10.11.6) and the patcher successfully installed and everything in the video was working out perfectly until it reached the actual Catalina installer where you select the disk to install the macOS. The only disk available is the Mac OS startup disk with 249.2 GB total and 163.11 GB available and it says "This version of macOS 10.15 cannot be installed on this computer." Did you upgrade the SSD and/or RAM beforehand or am I doing something wrong? Help and thanks!!
Saint Fanta it sounds like you ran the Catalina installer directly, it has to be run through the patcher. Did you go through the patcher prompts to get to the install?
@@IansTech Oh okay I understand now, however when I run it through the patcher it shows that it is open in the dock but when I check, it says the application is not responding
Saint Fanta I got a comment yesterday that someone had issues with the installer, if you have issues with it. I would delete it from your applications folder and re download the installer file
@@IansTech I'm having the same issue and I deleted the installer and reinstalled. It still won't run the installer after reinstalling it. It says "application not responding".
i am using window, so if i go ahead for MOS on my macbook2010 then what will be the method do we need to install seprate on pin drive
after installing catalina can i delete the installer program
yes you can delete it if no longer using it.
i did this to 2011 macbook pro. followed exact, but when i restart, it doesnt boot up in catalina, it goes to macOS utilities
If it does not exit even after a reboot you might need to go to disk utility and eject the install drive and then reboot again
