This song is about Titus, one of the two thieves, who died with Jesus on the cross.
De André is considered one of the most important singers in the panorama of the Italian culture. His songs are stories, written as poems, which tell very often of poor, rejected and last people. Lyrics are very deep.
Check "Fiume Sand Creek" or "La guerra di Piero" or "Bocca di Rosa", English subtitled.

De Andrè is probably the greatest Italian singer-songwriter. Irreverent, kind, able to paint pictures with his songs.
This song in particular, makes us understand all the hypocrisy that often hides behind the religious message. And we, in Italy, know the Catholic Church very well.

I loved that you ACTUALLY listened to the lyrics. That's what he was about and he was as good as a poet (and everything is in rhyme in Italian, even if it's not possible to translate it into ENG and even if some of the metaphors he uses probably are less clear in ENG than they are to us). I've seen people just listen to a song in another language without any lyrics on screen and say 'I love the vibe', others just read a couple of lines... that's not serious and in any case you can't do that with someone like de André. If you check you ENG wikipedia, you'll find out more about him.

As an Italian I can say that de andrè is the best poet and compositor on earth. People from other countries don't usually notice it but all of the words are perfectly matched to a melodic section due to a large vocabulary of terms even not used at these times and to a master-level skill on finding synonyms and metaphors to get a perfect melodic matching. It’s kinda like an englishman creating songs expressing himself like Shakespeare

It's incredible to see how you listened this song and, in general, this song appreciated outside Italy.
I highly recommend you to listen to his album "Non al denaro, non all'amore né al cielo" (Neither to money, nor to love, nor to Heaven): it's based on the Spoon River Anthology by E.L. Masters, you won't regret it.
Two incredible masterpieces merged in an only album.
Compliments for this video, it touched me deeply :)

I love that, you my friend, you catch some of the rules that are the essence of this music, the lyrics obviously, deep and personal, and the music builded around the lyrics, this is the "cantautorato" , probably the best of the Italian music, and you understand a lot, pretty clever

this song is a story. it's told from the point of view of Titus, one of the thieves crucified with Jesus, and he's going over all the ten commandments (the biblical ones) and how he didn't respected them, in doing so he's criticizing society, especially the bigots who upheld the commandments against him while they themselves where violating them aswell, yet he's the one been executed, he also finds Jesus next to him, because the bigots crucified him aswell.
it's a song full of meaning, wits, and De Andrè has a way with words, he's a poet, not just a songwriter, the whole album this is taken from is inspired from biblical stories and goes over them from a different perspective, like this one, which is titus testament while being crucified next to jesus. I'd sugget "il sogno di maria", the dream of mary, which is the story of holy mary when the angel came down from heaven and told this young, scared girl, that she was to bear the son of god himself.

One of the most extraordinary things written by Fabrizio De Andrè with English subtitles
    th-cam.com/video/MRvCxw0lmRo/w-d-xo.html
Tutti morimmo a stento, released in 1968, was one of the first concept albums in Italy. In De André's own words, the album "speaks of death, not of bubble gum death with little bones, but of psychological death, moral death, mental death, that a normal person can encounter during his lifetime." After the success of Volume I, De André was provided for this next album a cutting edge recording studio complete with an 80-member orchestra, directed by Gian Piero Reverberi, and a children's chorus. The whole project was under the direction of Gian Piero's brother Gian Franco Reverberi. This album also met with commercial success, becoming the highest selling album in Italy in 1968. In 1969 a version of the album was made with De André re-recording the vocals in English. The album was not officially released.
Recitative (Two Invocations and an Indictment)
Chorale (Legend of the Unhappy King)
In "Recitativo" and "Corale" De André makes the case that a merciful outlook should underpin all human affairs, as death waits patiently for each of us regardless of station in life.
