I Rescued a Trashed E92 M3 and Got it Running After Sitting for YEARS

- Sounds horrible, looks awful, BEAT UP worse than any E92 M3 I've ever seen. But that's why it's cheap right? Time to get it running and driving (because it doesn't do that right now).

Took a look at Carly, but can only get the basic version for Subaru's
I don't understand why your channel hasn't blown up? Is there some algorithm that you need to hit to get it seen? The content on this build and the Porsche builds (my favorites) is great and you definitely have the editing skills to get it done. Have you hit up the PCA (Porsche Club of America) to see if they are interested in promoting your Porsche content?
Well at least he already has 60k+ subs 🥲
I’m exactly the same LOVE Matts builds etc - should have at LEAST 100k subscribers- I don’t get it?!!
Honestly guys, I don't know. Sometimes I feel let down because my channel grows slower than most. I try and stay positive though. Your support means a lot!
Agreed! You definitely deserve more subs! Love the Porsche and M3 videos and the fact you work in your home garage!
@@matt13rossdon’t get discouraged, the next big break is right around the corner
Matt, you have your hood struts on backwards. The rod should be on the bottom. It opens smoother that way and tends to hold better.
Yea yea yea ill fix it lol
2:20 😭😭 I spit out my drink
Regarding the drone - I had an E90 m3. Best combination I found was just the oem x pipe with the 2.5 pipe mod on the muffler. I'd had a fully catless x pipe, catted x pipe, muffler delete, different aftermarket mufflers, but the best and most refined yet livable setup was the one listed above.
Yeah the pipe mod on the muffler does sound good.
In the grand scheme of things the E92 isn't THAT old, I can't believe they don't make these parts anymore
FCP EURO does make Parts Thankfully

I typically hate these "watch me fix a shitbox" series but there's something about your videos that keeps me coming back each update. It's also nice to see vendors hopping on to support! This'll be good when it's done. Hands down the best overall M car BMW ever built.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
This channel will go places, I reckon. Nice work, Matt!
Hope so!
Excited to see what comes of the M3. Thanks for sharing your journey so far!
That engine rattle that you had might be a dual mass flywheel rattle.
Hood struts were installed upside down. The black cylinder tube should be at the top and the chrome piston at the bottom.
This whole series inspires me to work on my tuned e90 335i!
Also today marks three months as a member of your channel. Your work ethic is something you should certainly be proud of!
Thank you, get to working, 335s are great! I loved my 135i. And thanks for your membership, your support means a lot!
Glad to see you working on the BMW Matt I enjoyed it keep up the good work.
Watching from Portugal since the beginning of the 996 build keep up the good work
I actually like the spec! dig the side skirts and ride height! This , e46 , and the e39 and e60 m cars all look perfect with the stock wheels on it’s nuts
Daily drive mine and love it. Alibaba has a great ti midline with race cats and I paired it with a ti muffler. Sounds mega.
Excited to see this series
I admire your courage for taking on an E90 M3. Then again - given what complete heaps of crap they are it should make for some decent content at the least.
How are they heaps of crap ? Not at all , German cars require proper maintenance on time , probably is most people such as yourself mix up reliability with indestructibility lol
They are crap
Modded OEM exhaust + carbon intake plenum and intake. Zero drone and it sounds awesome. Loud when it needs to but quiet when cruising at any speed. Let me know if you need a set of LCI tail lights since yours seems to be going out.
You selling a pair?
@@matt13ross yes.
This build is gonna be sick! Good work man
Great content and it’s awesome to see this channel growing 👏.
The E92 M3 is a legend all day but one that commands respect and a VERY healthy wallet. Here in the UK you can buy one of these for between £15-£20k (about $19k - £32k) with well under 100k miles. For that money it’s likely it’ll have the rod bearings replaced and a pretty clean example.
There are hundreds of these for sale at any time on account of the maintenance costs, annual road tax in UK being £685 ($885) due to emissions laws, and the eye watering cost of fuel.
That said, if you can keep up with the costs and you’ve got the balls to turn it on everyday waiting for that infamous chime to ruin your life, there’s not much better out there from this era.
You could also do this in INPA/ISTA.
That's what BMW uses and you can find that software everywhere.
Just in case if Carly cannot fix everything.
Ahh yes! From a long gone and forgotten era when BMW made good cars! Dare I say, good looking cars for drivers and not tech geeks! I still want an E39 M5!!! 😁👍🏼
All solid points.
Hi Matt. Well done, bro. I love a nice M3 who doesn't, lol. At least she's driving. A good start, Matt. 👌 👋👋🇨🇮
Excellent!! Keep going!!!
That yellow jack is the star, The sound it makes 😂
Lol
@matt13ross I like when it just pop's up in the video and everything goes silent and all you hear is sqeaking 😄
Do like this model. Looking forward to what you do.
Sounds amazing
I had a 2013 E93 fn loved that car.
First video I've seen from you and you got a new subscriber, love the editing style!
Thanks for the feedback and sub!
Awesome channel. Found you on my suggested videos. Definitely a subscriber.
Glad you subscribed, thanks!!
@M539Restorations just did a total engine rebuid on one of these, It may be worth checking out.
Love the BMW content! =) Keep up the great work!
@8:36 had me cracking 😂
I miss the stach 😅
“Brand new, second hand” 😂😂
Def need a larger shop Matt! Pretty awesome collection of cars!
Desperately!!!
Great vid keep up the good work. Keep that head up fame comes slow but when it hit it hits
Appreciate it!
Nice work,sounds pretty rowdy
E92 Love, keep it up bro👌🏻
An LS BMW, if I had to choose one. More reliable if properly sorted and built out. Much cheaper and easier to maintain. More options for upgrades and replacement parts are abundant.
I just subscribed, I’m enjoying your content. Looking forward to your build series. E9X rule! 😊👍🏾
Thanks for the sub!!
Flip the Crocs into tow mode and get that thing inside.
I believe you mean 4WD.
@@Chattsteezy I'm pretty sure that not even Ratt Moss has 4 legs.
Lol this is great guys
Not sure if you have found what exhaust your gonna go with yet but the valvetronic full exhaust sounds insane on these cars
I own a 2012 E93 M3 with the ESS supercharger on it. I obsessed about the exhaust and wanted a great sound, not stupid loud, and no drone. Go with the BMW performance exhaust. It sounds great, no drone, and is compatible with almost any x pipe if you go that route. Also, that supercharger is the way to go! No issues and drives like a dream.
I've got an exhaust waiting in the garage!
E9x Series M3s have a very light clutch from the factory. So don’t be too worried about that.
doing car gods work brother
My fav gen M3! This one looks like a quick and easy fix😊
Yea really quick!! Lol
@@matt13ross lol
I think all us home mechanic (even crap ones like me) can relate to this video - 1 time out of 10 that terrible engine noise turns out not to be terrible after all! Great vid
Thanks!
Having a e92 m3 apart of a car collection is a must have! The only problem that car has constantly are problems that you can easily handle at home inside of a garage!
Yes there are a lot of problems for sure.
Damn man how you dont have more subscribers, btw clean porsches you got there
Thanks! Subs have been growing lately, thankfully!
I had the same issue on my e92 335. The reason for the leak on the new line is because it doesn't have the rubber gasket/seal that snaps onto the tip. My issue was not realizing it snaps on to the tip rather I was just inserting it into the slave.
Wish I would have known that before!! haha
You're gonna have to work on the rear suspension for sure. When you fixed the pedal, and ran the wheels on the jackstands - there was immense wobble on the rear left tire.
I was thinking it's a bent wheel actually.
@@matt13ross well, could be both, check for the play of the suspension on all the tires, wheel bearings will be a thing to work on, the shocks, too, all the bushings probably. If you need any inspiration check out M539 restorations and his project Frankfurt (E92 M3)
Yea I'm planning on replacing a lot of suspension in the future.
Wow M3 is amazing 😊 but there is little issue with it 🎉
You literally see the steering wheel slightly shaking when you applied the brakes 😁. I am certain that will be a nice build. Keep up the good work Matt 👌
He mentions this in the video if you watched it. He said he'll fix it because it's driving him crazy
@@Streamin0 I know I only wanted to sort of confirm it. you know
Yup it's bad!
I feel your pain my guy. I cringed just thinking about it 😩. I bought a 2011 335xi. So far Ive change the radiator, coolant line, water pump, thermostat, ofhg, valve cover and gasket, manifold gaskets, tb gasket, struts and shocks, transmission pan w/ gasket and seals 😅... What a nightmare of work in less then 6 months. I need a vacation from this thing.
Eventually the fixes stop and theods will begin!
@@matt13ross agreed
You're going to need a bigger garage! Loving all your content
Someday!
I just rewatched the last video last night, wondering about an update!
Watched twice?? Thank you!!
May need to check ur rotors if you are getting vibrations while braking...they are mostly warped already
Sometimes that can be worn out suspension or wheel bearings as well.
Absolutely SEXY e92 m3! Glad you're fixing it up!
It will still get spanked by my 135i though 😁🤙
OH yea, it's not fast lol.
@@matt13ross I've thought about LS-swapping it if I ever end up blowing the n54, but I just don't feel right about it, as much as I love a v8. Now a viper v10 swap on the other hand.... 🤔🤔
You made me wipe my mouth after you made contact with not just a new but a USED fitting. 😂
With my 285 lbs of love upside down installing a wildwood master cylinder. Was quite the sight to see I'm sure. Pull that damn seat! LOL
It's the worse position lol
What points do you have the jacks on
Hey can you do an abandoned E46 any model 😁 love seeing them bought back to life
I will do an E46 M3 eventually!
@@matt13ross yay exciting can’t wait to see that! Love the E92 so far definitely a diamond in the dirt
Great feeling when you finally get a problematic project driving on the road. Congrats!!
Yes! Thank you!
love that job , +1 subscriber 😬
Thanks for the sub!
Restore this back to OEM plus. You’ll be glad you did - all those corny aftermarket side skirts etc need to go. Will be an appreciating asset soon enough
OEM plus is the plan
I've slowly been rescuing a trashed 328i 07 e92 so many things i have replace still chasing these codes man lovely to wrench on though. i need a new valve cover, tune up, new tires, and an alignment. i repaired alot of seals gaskets secondary air pump all new suspension. truth is these cars sour up if they sit make sure you keep your drains clear and you will be okay as far as electronics flooding. tail light seals need to be replaced they are in fact money pits its addicting car to drive.
Yea it seems like a neverending mess.
I got a random stock style carbon e36 hood in my house too lmao.
You installed hood struts upside down. There is oil in them lubricating the seal, they will wear out in no time. :D
Alright alright, I'll fix it!
I have that same HF breaker bar, and mine too is bent just like that 😂
Hahaa
hey, what is the exact name of the paint color? thanks
6:37 I’ve never seen whiter legs in my life 😂😂😂
HEY!
Love the e92 M3 but surprised you picked one up. A V8 M3, sounds pretty familiar on this channel…. 🤔
Side note - 997 looks awesome
Thanks so much! Nice change of pace for the channel.
Another Ross banger.
Hahah!!
Small thing, but satisfying - get rid of those aftermarket side skirt things.
The leak is a little rubber top hat that pushes onto the end of the pipe it’s common to hundreds of different vehicles with hydraulic clutch and always flies off and runs away when you disconnect the pipe, it happens that fast you don’t see it and can never figure out why it’s leaking….had this problem once and learned the hard way
Wish I knew that before!!!
@@matt13ross I know shame i didn’t see your vid before but the algorithm wanted to wait until you’d fixed it the painful way before showing me your page haha, Search clutch pipe top seal and it will be a variation of that 👍🏻
Hahaha, well thank you! Now I know for (hopefully not) next time.
It’s not a 911 but still top notch content 👍👍🙏🇬🇧 BNSH👍👍
Goodluck with this gen M3, It's real money pit. I sold mine in 2020 ...
(U will sell your house, and still there will be problems with this junk M3 gen. The E36 M3 was the best gen, my personal opinion)
Well said, I had one, it was a money pit, from the rods to actuator's to road tax to petrol, ppl love the noise and V8, but forget that noise costs money, they are overrated, the balance was good but never again.
Hey Matt super important question! Does Carly show you trans temps? I need that to do maintenance on my bmw’s ZF.
Hrm, I would think if the vehicle has a temp sensor in the trans, Carly would show it. Most manuals don't have them.
Idk who they is but the clutch line for an e92 m3 is readily available on fcp euro and from the dealer
9:27 that wheel is messed up
I think so too
*I think the biggest problem is those two 911's in your garage. Most likely they're causing issues with that BMW. The best thing is to get rid of one, and give it to me. It's difficult, but I'll manage, and it'll help you out a TON.*
Hahahaha I'll give you one for the right price!
Poor lad
that wheel is bent af lol, saw this on tiktok and had to follow ya
Thanks for the sub!
hey where do you find these deals i can never lol
Rod Bearings fail quickly on these. get them replaced and the sound is gone.
At 9:29 the rear left wheel seems to rotate with a wobble. I can’t tell if it’s an optical illusion but since the car drives like crap maybe it’s off.
My guess is the wheel is bent, but I haven't looked into it further yet.
That's what I love about usa, you can find cheap cars, in my country only rich people have e92 and they don't use them, don't sell them and if they sell them they want to sell it like if is 2007 again
9:25 is that wheel bent or are the tires shot ?
Bent I think
@@matt13ross shit man.
9:00 clutch is light from factory, way too light, Sreten from M539 channel got an aftermarket kit to make it feel stiffer.
I don't mind it, but it surprised me lol
Btw what's this color called?
Great content, subbed and ready for beamer content 🎉
Thanks for the sub!
You forgot to say matt that carley wants money off you for the basic kit that's useless, then you have to upgrade to carley yearly sub and when all that's done its still useless...save your time, money and patience and patience and buy agood scanner ,nevermind that carley rubbish.
Have you used RealOEM yet? Godsend for finding BMW parts
Yup, use it all the time!
Half of me is happy you replaced the hood struts. The other half is sad because you put them on upside down.
LOLOL will fix!
Matt. What year is the M3? I’m looking for a project and I’ve never built a BMW.
2008
FYI Carly does not properly register batteries in E9X series cars. It will claim to have registered it properly but scanning in INPA will show it hasn’t been registered. This has been proven many times on m3post forums.
Interesting, thanks!
@@matt13ross I should clarify. Carly is great for coding features. But in this case does not properly register. Coding the battery type and registering the battery are two distinct actions that people often confuse as one. In my case I coded and registered with a different suite of tools. But Carly as a product and sponsor are good to go for tons of other functions. A must have for anyone that likes to do their own maintenance
make more videos on the 997 if i saw that correctly
Algorithm, you’ll slowly get there. Got my sub :)
I hope so, thank you!
