Michonne left the Governor basically to suffer until he either died, or was eaten by walkers. He wasn't surviving that wound.

He was such a piece of shit that he didn't deserve to die by Michonnes sword. So he just left him there to suffer and hopefully get eaten alive or turn. We never saw any of those as he got shot in the end. What a shame.

Herschel smiled during Ricks speech because he said essentially the same thing to Rick in episode 1 of this season. When Rick was telling Herschel about Ciara, the lady in the woods, Herschel said " you tried to help her, she was too far gone, you're not". And something like, "you came back, you get to come back, we all do", or something along those lines. As always, another fantastic reaction! Your facial expressions alone were priceless and ran the gamut from fear and sadness to rage and loathing.....you weren't alone....feel better and always remember spaghetti Tuesdays!

However, only putting the weak (children/elderly) and sick on the bus was a bad move too, there should've been at least 1 adult in good health that knew how to kill walkers on the bus.

Back when this episode aired, (before i actually watched the show) you couldn't go anywhere without people talking about this episode. I just remember this episode having such a huge impact on people. I was in 6th/7th grade at the time, (now graduated, oh how time flies) and i just remember hearing for an entire week about how Hershel was dead. I had no clue what the show was but thats what made me want to watch it.

Mattel love oof. I was a junior in high school but no one in my classes watched the show. I still remember the night this aired b/c I watch this show w/ my dad and when the Gov looked at Rick and the music started playing. I was like he’s not gonna do it and then I was like he is and I kept flip flopping it and my dad was like yeah he’s gonna do it. Hershel needs to be the one to die to get the shooting started and then when Gov went for the throat slash my jaw literally dropped. I was a gov fan and was hoping that he’d become good but once he slit Hershel’s throat. I wanted him to die slow and painfully since there was no coming back from killing Hershel.

There’s an interesting backstory to that climactic scene with the Governor killing Hershel. The new showrunner Scott Gimple wanted David Morrissey, who played The Governor, to yell the word “LIAR!!” and then cut off Hershel’s head. But Morrissey felt it would be more chilling if he were to whisper “Liar” instead. Scott Wilson, who played Hershel, agreed with Morrissey. Gimple and Morrissey got into a very heated argument, a screaming match no less, right during the filming of that scene, but in the end Morrissey got his way and his whisper 🤫
Morrissey was right too. The whisper was much more effective. To this day whenever I watch that scene and see The Governor appear to consider Rick’s words and then quietly whisper “Liar” I get goosebumps.

What makes this episode effective is that Rick was told in the beginning of the series about how we can't come back from what we have done. And he does try to forgive the Governor and tries to make peace. But the moment when The Governor kills Hershel, there is no going back. It was The Governor's last chance to turn everything around. But after that, he is so far gone, he finishes Megan with no remorse and just wants to hurt anyone he can which both destroys the prison and and everyone in his camp.

No Merle? That was such a HEARTBREAKING fight. Merle was one of my favorites in the early seasons. Man, I imagine if Merle was still alive in later seasons, he'd be Negan's right hand man and they'd be besties. Their personalities would match so well. Merle is such an underrated character.

I think Michonne not "finishing" him off is kinda a callback to her conversation with Tyrese. She told him that she was searching for him because it needed to be done and not because she was angry. At the time, I think it was a lie. Her killing him like the way she did, leaving him to die instead of cutting his ass up like we all wanted to was her way of moving on from him. She didn't NEED to because job was done. He was going to die regardless and that was what she wanted. Also, he happens to suffer while he does, well consider that a fateful bonus...

The Governor only cares about people as far as they can make him feel important and respected in the way he feels he’s owed. He cares about his image of himself, not other people’s lives. He sees himself as a savior and hero, but because he’s only serving himself, he’s the opposite.

    • @transplantman2287

Comic Comparisons : in the comics It’s Tyreese who gets decapitated his comic counterpart is actually introduced much earlier than in the show before they get to the farm the battle for the prison goes down a bit different The Governor is presumed dead for a while before he randomly shows up at the prison gates It should be noted that the Governor never kills all of his people or burns down Woodbury so he still had an army with him him becoming Brian Heriot is completely unique to the show I can’t remember exactly but I think their first attack failed Nonetheless they eventually bust through and kill a lot of people Hershel does die in this battle in the comics but not in the same way He begs to be killed after his son is shot right in front of him and the Governor grants him that Rick tries to escape with Lori and Judith but Lori who is carrying Judith is shot and falls to the ground killing both her and the baby after the Governor successfully wins the prison Lily who was already a member of Woodbury and dealt the killing shot on Lori realizes she also killed a baby and gets mad at the Governor when the Governor shows no remorse she shoots him dead in the head after that nothing more is said about the Woodbury group.
