    You really are the hardest working on MTGtube in my opinion. You didn't get involved into the rest of the mtgtube drama. You can really tell the time and effort you put into your videos, and if I wasn't so broke Id be supporting you on patron as well. Thanks for all that you do Dev. Ive been playing for a year now and you've been my number one Mtg source.

      I totally agree. Dev is my favorite MyGtuber. He thinks close enough to me about cards that I can relate but differently enough to teach me new things. Please keep up the great work.

      Zach Cash His appearance on the Kitchen Table Magic podcast was pretty awesome in terms of seeing how he thinks about cards; it really does go deep in both history and mechanic-combos. I can't think of another person who can reel off 10 potential (good) replacements for a card in a deck as easily. Also the 'being personable' thing helps, and there's a sad story about his dad that may go to explaining that somewhat, in terms of seeing Magic as a community that kinda replaced someone he can't play with (i.e. he teaches because he wants to spread to us what he never got himself, in a way). Maybe I'm going too psychoanalytical, but eh, it's a great listen nonetheless!

    The strength of Direfleet Daredevil that Dev did not mention is that it hates on Snapcaster Mage.
    On the play you can exile the best instant or sorcery in your opponents graveyard before they can recast it. Even if you don't cast the card once it is exiled your opponent can't bolt-snap-bolt and you are left with a body that blocks Snapcaster all day. I definitely agree that it is best as a sideboard card, excited to surprise people with this!

    Blood Sun seems unassuming but the fact that it affects Fetchlands like it does makes it better than Bloodmoon in some cases. It obviously has no effect on non-basics in Modern like Bloodmoon does, so it isn't super OP. Interesting #1, but I think its got a strong case for that spot.

    • @TQDigitalMod
      @TQDigitalMod 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      let's not forget it draws you a card to when it ETB's, making it even better because it still does something when you cast copies 2-4(assuming you run 4 of in deck) unlike bloodmoon

    Merfolk in standard.. we have all the 2 drops... the wierd part is it's mostly green... and blood sun I'd like to brew around the bounce land cycle and power out 5mana things on turn 4 in modern... It makes 7 drops on turn 5 possible without ramp from green, and shuts down opposing utility lands... Blue/ red/ x control... So greedy but it looks fun

    @Dev Hey! I love the Phoenix. I'm testing running it in a R/W Control list. It's been SO GOOD. sweep the board? Sweet. it'll come back or they still have to waste a removal spell AFTER i just swept the board to remove it. It's a great blocker too. It just keeps coming back. Definitely one of my favorite cards from the new set.

    I think one of the most relevant points about Blood Sun is specifically that it doesn't hose your own mana base. In some decks, that will be more important than the broader hosing ability of Blood Moon.

  • @docpox3900
    @docpox3900 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For Ghalta a thing I realized and want to brew now is that with Wayward Swordtooth (the 5/5 for 2G) you can get ghalta out on turn for with a bit of ease. Even if the Azusa dino cant attack he still takes half the colorless requirement for Ghalta for cheeeeeeaaaaap!

    • @merlinjover5689
      @merlinjover5689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doc Pox turn 3 is possible but nneds some build around. Turn 1 green onedrop with three power that gives a land to the opponent or white onedrop that gets +2/+1 if you control an artifact. Turn 2 heart of kiran. Turn 3 one of the onedrops again, crew heart of kiran->10 Power and 2 green left to cast ghalta

    • @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299
      @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Drover into Wayward=8 power+6 (Drover taps for mana also making 7 possible mana) mana on turn 4= 4 cmc Ghalta with 3 mana left for protection:P

    • @docpox3900
      @docpox3900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would require a bit of build around and some really precise draws. With Wayward SwordTooth you basically only need it and one of the Dino shamans, drover of the mighty being a more consistent one and on green so you wont need to splash too hard.
      t2 drover
      t3 WS
      t4 Drover is now a 3/3 so you have 8 power and at least 2 lands, as long as one of those produces green drover can produce the other

    • @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299
      @mr.mammuthusafricanavus8299 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL just basically what I typed

    • @docpox3900
      @docpox3900 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also fling. If I make this deck I have to have 4 copies of fling. Even if you never hit ascend for the Wayward you could just fling em for a dino build your own lava axe

  • @OnlyZunkin
    @OnlyZunkin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    World Shaper is seriously underrated. We don't have great discard in green at the moment but you could make one nasty BUG deck using this card with a load of blue loot/self mill, the Scarab God and that 6/6 hydra that reanimates itself for 4 from the yard. Play early game blue critters that let you loot and mill along with spells like winds of rebuke which help stabilize the board while milling. That along with the various cycling lands and evolving wilds should ensure there are a load of lands and reanimation targets in the yard when you need them on turn 5 or 6.
    The World Shaper naturally synergizes with the a Scarab God deck in that it wants to have the yard full, it helps fill the yard, it needs to be removed with exile effects which your opponent will not want to use on it for fear of the God popping up a round later, and it can generate a crap ton of mana which is exactly what you want in that deck. The World Shaper is scary in that your opponent is provided with a terrible choice. They can either kill it via blocking or removal and set off its effect immediately or they can try to avoid setting it off at the cost of it milling three cards into the yard and doing 3 damage to them every round. It is a very dangerous creature regardless of if they kill it or not.

    #20: Someone played this in our limited sealed match today. I kept spamming Mutiny on it, doing five dmg to target creature other than Wayward, lol. Anyways, I'm of the impression its too hard to Ascend with a non-token deck when you factor in removal, and especially board wipes, unless your playing 2-headed giant which tends to stall out more. To me, Ascend is a newb trap. It's a nice cherry on top if it procs, but you're playing with fire if you're counting on it. With #20, you're counting on it! I understand Ascend isn't required to play the additional lands, but more often than not you might proc the lands once a game before it's useless.
    #7: Same thing here. The owner has to count on Ascend working, otherwise you're overpaying with 4-mana to play a 2/4 flyer. Not exactly my first choice for a turn-4 card, since the competition at the 4-spot is tight with Sanctum Seeker, Anointed Procession, Settle the Wreckage, I could go on forever. However, unlike #20, at least it can do something without Ascend, so that's a plus.

    To be frank with Azor's Gateway ites the best ramp we've seen in standard for a long time. In a blue black control deck you can honestly see the power. You will get your torrentials out very fast, on even turn 5 if you want to. Essentially this says " have as much mana you can ever want"

    Question for you all: Blood Sun in modern/EDH - bounce lands. Is this as crazy as I'm thinking? It removes all abilities, not just activated. So wouldn't the bounce lands 1) not enter tapped and 2) not bounce a land? Just a straight up double mana land with no drawbacks?!

  • @scoffingskeptic

    I'm only a couple of cards in, but I can't believe you ranked Angrath, Arch, and The Immortal Sun (which isn't even that great in EDH) above Chupacabra - best card in the set.
    I'm usually with you on these rankings, but there's a lot of jank in this top-20. I would have moved a lot of those Commons and Uncomons up.

    Glad to see Kumena made top 3. Pre-ordered 2.

  • @ecoKady
    @ecoKady 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kumena is amazing in Merfolk, but Merfolk has tough matches against both Ramunap Red (not even winnable after sideboard) and UW Approach (better after sideboarding thanks to Negatve and Spell Pierce). I haven't tested much with UB control, but from what I've seen so far, Fatal Push, Gifted Aetherborn, Ravenous Chupcabra and the Scarab God are very, very bad for merfolk and a few Blossoming Defenses isn't going to change that.
    Kumena is very good, but I'm not sure she'll see a ton of play until Hazoret, Approach and Scarab God go away.

  • @ghostlyjester9134
    @ghostlyjester9134 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Angarth plus aggressive pyro deck mixed with the ability to remove cards from graveyard in a two headed giant fight teamed up with a blue green mill deck with the green running cards like fog counter spells sphinx tutelage. I can't remember what it's called but there is a blue spell where if u get an artifact, creature or not, u get a atifasct creature token. Have the blue deck run things like improvise, fabricate and investigate. This will cause u to get creatures when getting clues (sacrifice this artifact and pay 2 to draw a card.) And be able to use artifact as mana for creatures with improvise. And fabricate will make artifact creatures or give creature counters (+1/1 ), obviously for the black wand red you would want just damage, basic mana ramp, haste, death touch and some bulky hard hitting creatures. Oh obviously u and your ally would want some madness cards, cards that if u discard (for angarths first ability) u could pay mana to have just appear on the field (this works even if they get discarded to exile from hand.

      Heggerino If you read the flavour text on some of the Sun Empire cards, Tillonali and whatnot are names for the three aspects of the sun itself, representing W, R and G respectively. Kinjalli is W, Tillonali is R, I believe, and the other one is G. So, it doesn't make sense to have cards for the sun itself.

    Love these lists!
    Disagree with the dinosaur ratings. I don't see why the GPG decks would play the white one. The red one is really bad, and the black one is definitely the best one.
    And I really don't like Slaughter the Strong. I don't think the two mana it saves from Fumigate justifies leaving one or two guys in the battlefield. If you play it as an asymmetrical boardwipe, I think Dusk//Dawn does a better job (love that card).

    On another note; no way Silent Gravestone competes with Crook of Condemnation...

    • @thebirdnerd6675
      @thebirdnerd6675 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with the first statement, I am so hyped. But I have to disagree with the second one, because I think their should be a split between the two. Gravestone can protect your graveyard, including from The Scarab God, as well as nuke graveyards and mess with some strategies. Also Gravestone draws a card, and is good once they have a bunch of cards in their graveyard while Crook, or even Sentinel Totem, can hate on graveyards early game.

    • @13eetle13omber
      @13eetle13omber 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My problem with the card is that it is pretty bad in the main match up you would want graveyard hate for in standard: Gifts. GPG doesn't actually target with it's triggered ability which means you will have to sacrifice your Gravestone for a desperate one-time delay which is basically the same as sideboarding in a fog. While Crook has a similar problem, being that you can't exile the target in response, you do have the advantage of exiling the creatures as the deck puts them in the graveyard, or at the very least hitting the one they are most likely to "eternalize". The card draw on this effect doesn't excite me much because the ability is 4 mana to activate which makes it a far cry from modern's Relic, not that I'm ever happy to "cycle" my sideboard cards anyway. As for stopping Scarab God the Gravestone does prevent SG from targeting creatures with his activated ability but will be hard to have the 4 mana available to exile SG when he is put into the graveyard because you most likely spent some mana to put him there in the first place. I also don't even bring in graveyard hate against decks that only play SG as their graveyard dependent cards so this is lost on me. Gravestone is really only good at stopping Torrential Gearhulk, and to some extent The Scarab God. That's not enough for my sideboard slots.

    • @thebirdnerd6675
      @thebirdnerd6675 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are all really good points, but for me I like to have a one of in my sideboard as well as some Sentinel Totems because my deck already has a lot of 2 drops and not a lot of 1 drops, and I don't mind nuking my own graveyard. I guess my point is that it usually depends on the deck and the meta in which you play, because they both do different things. No one really plays GPG at my LGS so I don't have to worry about playing against it. I definitely agree that Crook is better for straight up graveyard hate.

    • @13eetle13omber
      @13eetle13omber 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough. Local meta can play a large role, so to each their own.

    Chupacabra looks scary even without the card text...just saying. I also have a question about silent gravestone. Can i use it in response to Scarab God's ability when he dies to exile gy and him as well? I mean does he even go to the gy since the text on the card says ''when he dies...'' not when he goes to gy from play? If he does i think i can exile him at instant speed while the return ability is on the stack.

      @OneEyed_Jack 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can exile gy to get rid of Scarab God. But you don't need to fuss over timing. He doesn't go back to hand instantly, but at the beginning of the next end step.

    I hateSilent Gravestone. I don't need to see this in EDH. I have like 4 graveyard decks that are going to hate this. At least my Kess deck only hates the generic second part of the card, she doesn't target the card you cast from your graveyard, you can just cast a card from your graveyard each of your turns.
    This set is fantastic though. I love it.
