If the neck dive wasn't that extreme, I would get a Glarry one
I have one of those, except it's the black model, it sounds good. I changed the strings to a heavier gauge and it fits nicely in them, the tone on the stock strings are alright but it didn't satisfy my tastes for heavy metal. So fortune had it that one of the strings broke because I accidentally overtightened the A string so I bought a set of Ernie Ball heavy gauge strings and they do the job well. $20 for them and they have a mellower tone to them, just the way I like them. Might change the pickups, bridge and tuners to something aftermarket in maybe 6 months or a year later. Overall, a pretty good bass if you're just starting out like me.

Jazz Bass styled pickup is better for heavy metal

@@HerbonGuitar Yeah All the lowest guitars and bass were either the Squire POS Bullet Stratacaster and Bullet Telecaster or the POS First Act. I had a First Act Stratacaster pickups and bar in the Telecaster body this is why I did not keep up with guitar. Anything under $200 was bad and anything under $100 was unplayable. I paid $104-$150 for my guitar and I got ripped off. I would have been better saving up a little more for the Yamaha Stratacaster almost knock off. My brother even got a better bass for $200.
Casey smith That is very true for about 20 years ago, however all the stuff coming out now is excellent, or at least decent, like the firefly guitars, even the $119 square telecasters are a lot better than they ever were.
I got the jazz version of this as my first bass. You can definitely feel how thick the neck is, and since I don't have adult size hands, it was pretty hard to get used to. My hand used to cramp up a lot, but once my technique got better (how hard I pressed the strings, my thumb position, etc...), it is comfortable to play on. However, having tried other basses, you can definitely tell a pretty significant difference in the neck thickness.

I try to find cheaper Japanese guitars from the 70s for this reason. Recently picked up a Memphis P bass copy for $60. Someone already added CTS pots, a switchcraft jack and an orange drop cap. I refinished it in white and added a gold pickguard and Fender pickups. Plays and sounds amazing for about $200 total investment and a day's worth of work.

Did the same thing. Traded for free at a used furniture / antique store for a bunch of stuff from a rental attic. Did a GFS solid bridge, GFS "stock" Pickups Tuners and pots.
Put a fender decal on the headstock and fooled my Pbass buddy for about 15 minutes before I told him what he was playing! 140 bucks all in.
This cheap for a bass made in Japan in the 70s? Wow, some people tend to ask crazy prices for Japanese guitars from the 70s these days. I guess basses are no big difference. Just look up for older Squiers and Epiphones from the 70s. (60s Epis are much more expensive, as they were built in Calamazoo/Mi in the Gibson factory)
I love mine. I have zero issues with it and it doesn't seem to be neck heavy at all. For less than the price of a sushi dinner for two, it has been totally worth it.

If that fretboard is really rosewood, I'm Geddy Lee. The 'wood' is so dense, it feels like a piece of composite decking. I wonder if basswood is essentially balsawood, because the body is so light, you think it is made from that lightweight wood. But, hey, for $55 on eBay, I can't really complain and it does play okay. Not like my MIM Fender, but it will be fun to experiment with.
Hey Austin, Huh? No I bought the same bass you have, my output jack was bad and they offered to replace the entire bass but I just put a new jack in it and it's been fine ever since then. Lol but I did just put a kill switch on mine!! Just call me Buckethead on the bass!! lol. I had to do alot of setup work on mine to get it just right but nope, the neck on mine has been issue free.
I guess I remembered the story wrong! haha The point stands though - they stand behind their products!
@@Trog - Yes they do, like I said they were more than willing to ship me a new bass, but I saved them the shipping fees and just fixed it myself and so far I like the bass. No, it's not equal to the Fender or that SB you had, but then again I didn't pay that much lol. I am curious about the amp they sent you. I just got a Strat style from them with the amp and it looks just like yours, mine just says GA-20 on the front. edit - ok yours actually says Bass on it.

I picked up a white one a couple of months ago. Never noticed the neck dive, I guess because I play sitting down mostly. Over all I was impressed with how good it is for $68 shipped to my door. The good: it feels solid when playing it. I play through an Axe FXIII and the tones generated sounded pretty good to me. The neck and frets feel good under the fingers, Holds tuning just fine. The bad: all the plastic on this bass is cheap AF. The nut will need to be replaced in the near future. The pick guard plastic is super cheap (soft) you can push your fingernail right into it. The strings it ships with are awful. New quality strings made huge difference in tone and feel. If you're not afraid to do some basic improvements to your bass/guitar this thing is a steal. If you're the type that needs it to be perfect right out of the box you'll be disappointed.
On a cost to value basis, it sounds brilliant.
Look at the grain on that neck! It’s just ridiculously good for the money! The neck is why you buy a Glarry. That, and as a platform for learning how to mod a guitar. My son and I will be learning together. Thanks, Glarry! 😎
I purchased the exact bass, got it for $57 shipping included on eBay. Put Fender pickups in it and some flat wound strings, sounds and plays great.
Just move the strap screw lower to avoid neck dive, no weight necessary. Learned that from Groovy Music Lessons.
Your's is probably plywood, in my opinion better. With the bass wood and a fat P neck the strap button would have to be on a lead 3 foot pipe, but good idea.

This bass is definitely pretty good for the price. For a first bass this is very good. Im more a guitarist but i really liked this piece and threw on some flatwounds and i think it sounds even better.

One of the best ways to fix neck dive is to use a
wide leather strap with a suede backing that grips your shirt.

I like cheap no name bass and 6 string guitar's, im 57 years old and have had all the expensive guitar's through the year's, i like to surprise people at how good you can make these ( what some people call piece of shit guitar's) they are pure fun for a little money 👍.
I have purchased quite a few things from Glarry . Actually started with a cello in 1986 but was in wintertime comas for 9 years after graduating ( 92 to 02 ). So lost out on my playing 😮 Now I can’t get anything awsome and don’t want to, starting over BUT . . For a great affordable price . Their equipment is DOWNRIGHT EXCELLENT 🎉

Cheapo with ceramic magnets, instead of Alnico polepiece magnets 🧲
The buzz is from ground loop. My daughter's had several unnecessary ground wires. They actually act like an antenna at that point. Shielding the control cavity helped a lot, too.
Low cost Guitars can be a lot of fun to mod and hot rod. Low risk if one gets damaged or stolen. There is a place for stuff like this.
Epic Custom Shop makes some awesome pickups for the money so grabbing one of these with a set of ECS pickups you are under 150 (minus that amp). For people that can do their own work that seems like it would be a killer deal. It's actually a great looking bass for the money. Thanks for the review.
*Yes, both Precision and Jazz bass pickups are screwed directly into the wood. Most bass pickups are.*
I have multiple really high quality basses and I’ve been playing for 5 years. I think I’ll get this as a project bass.
The only thing I don't like is the finish ,the burst is only on the front,but for 70$ it's a good project guitar,I'll probably get one just to have in the collection,
I got the Burning Fire P bass for $59.00 on eBay just to see how bad it was. It was actually playable right out of the box but after a getting it on my bench for a level, crown, and polish on the frets it plays very well. I'm pretty sure that body isn't Basswood but Paulowina and the fret board possibly Indian Laurel. The light body is why the bass is so bright. I had to resolder the tone cap to fix the buzzing.
Really indian laurel? It looks more like blackwood tek to me
my first bass cost me $160 and it didn't look as pretty under the pick guard, it also didn't come with an amp. the routes were sloppy and rough, some sections looked chiseled out. I'm very impressed by this glarry bass.

Hey! Literally, as I'm watching this, I'm assembling a guitar stand by Glarry. Didn't even know what brand it was until I picked up one of the parts.
For the Neck dive issue, you could also mounth the end strap button higher on the end of the body, that shifts weight to the right away from the neck. If this is an extreme example, it might not work, but it's a trick that I know to work on SG's with neck dive.
Thank you for making this video. I needed a good shot of the electronic wiring as they don't include any diagrams to how they wire their basses. They don't actually do it the P-Bass way, which is why they sound a little brighter... which I like. I dig mine, but I went and wired it the "correct way" and hate it. Now I can wire it back properly (this is what I get for not writing things down)
I got this bass around a year ago, you got many flaws that I didn’t get while purchasing this bass, it really is a better budget bass. Sorry to see yours had a lot more problems
Im looking to get into playing Bass and I’ve been thinking about getting this Bass as my beginner, what’s a good Bass amp thats also cheap?
I'm like, a total beginner at bass and music and everything, I actually played guitar only once in my whole life, is this a good bass for a beginner? I studied music a lot and I know the bass notes, the frets, steps and everything, I just need to know if it's worth it, can someone tell me please?
(I also don't want to spend too much in a bass since I'm still learning about these things, so $90 is actually a good price for me)
If you quit, you only spent $70, you have nothing to lose. If you get better skills, you can always upgrade to a Squier. It's a no brainer.

Your statement that if it was a thinner neck it would probably bow(12:17) I have to disagree. That is why they have a truss rod. They probably have a fatter neck because they are cheaper to make. Less time involved. I am sure if someone bought one they could if they had wood working capabilities trim the neck down to a much more shallow depth and have no issues since string tension remains the same on all basses with this. scale length. That would be an excellent test for you to do on this bass. I am pretty sure you would be very pleased. Thanks for the review.

I picked up a J. Reynolds p bass, for next to nothing. Its sounds amazing. And hardly weighs anything. I think new they go for 90-100.

I have a Johnson P Bass that my family member kicked over. I'm planning Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and D'Addario strings with new electrics. It plays fine and a cheap bass can sound and play really well.
For your bass a Omega bridge wpuld add mass and weight at the bridge. That said it is a direct replacement for a Fender bass bridge so you will have to put new screws in it. It will also fatten up the tone.
I have that same buzz when I use the wire that came with the amp. I purchased a wireless amp cable and I no longer have a static buzz at rest.

I'll put it up against the IYV MM copy I just got. It's rather amazing for what I paid for it.
I recently purchased a Glarry P Bass. Beautiful guitar. However, the neck had a slight twist in it, the nut was improperly seated/installed into the neck and they cut the E string groove way too deep into the nut. It was unplayable with all the string buzz due to the frets not being evenly installed as well. For $80, I would say that you WILL have to do quite a bit of work on it just to get it to a playable level. You had better be somewhat of a guitar luthier as well. I requested a full refund so let's see if their 30 day money back guarantee plays out. In my opinion, I think the guitars the TH-cam people receive have been hand-picked for perfection.

Not a bass player but my bass is a cheap Ibanez Gio I got for I think 80 dollars from Guitar Center. It's got a lot of dings but nothing bothersome. Even the neck has like giant gouges in places, but somehow I dont even notice while I'm playing it. I love it a lot to be honest. The only bass I've played that I liked more was a Gretsch... that being said I have never played a higher end bass either so idk how well the gio holds up overall as a bass guitar.
better then having no bass at all!
So far I have two guitars but I think my actual guitar collection is gonna start with Glarry guitars. Then I'll just upgrade them from there.
Good review. Lots of essential info. Yeah, the neck dive drives me nuts!!. I've even used lead fishing weights screwed into the back of the body to fix it on other basses. The problem in not only the body material, but also the body shape. A longer horn on top will easily correct that. The top 'horn' (that the strap attaches to) should generally extend to the 12th fret to balance ok. I have a couple cheap Dean basses and they have a super long horn, and they balance perfect. Thanks for pointing out the tuners. They will vibrate at certain frequencies when they are loose like that. And just are crappy. Not a good thing to scimp on. I think the tuners and especially the neck dive makes it a 'no go' for me.
Tuners can be upgraded, or these tuners can be lubricated,with synthetic oil.

Maybe it just needs reverse weight relief - swiss cheese type holes, then plug the holes with lead weights. :D
No it's the wood. Look and feels like normal wood but isn't much heavier than balsa. Some other China guitars in same price range use plywood. Ply is a lot heavier, better balance and a little better sustain.

It probably records pretty good if you get that crappy pickup reacting just right. I love fat necks. I wonder if you put a heavy bridge on there if it would help your neck dive. I think people used to move the strap buttons around in the old school rock camps. I believe they actually drill a button onto the back of the neck somewhere near the 12th fret. Im not kidding, its not the heel, the 12th fret. I've actually seen acoustics like this. Problem is you could lose a thumb if you accidentally forget and go for something in the upper register. You could also put the strap pin on the back of the headstock and get a shoelace like SIr Paul. That is really impossible to get used to, since it feels more like carrying a kid on your shoulders then holding an instrument. I would love to see you do some experiments with where to move the strap pin in order to effectively combat the dive! The amp hanging on the strap is priceless though. I can imagine Devo doing that and hanging the batteries to power the amp next to it.
Sounds and looks good to me. I'd rock some bass tracks on my DAW with it.

Hey Austin, don't know if you'll even read this, but just some info on the "distortion" setting you'd like on your bass amp. Bassically, (get it) no bass amp that i know of has a distortion setting. Building that into an amp would probably cost quite a penny, but i actually owned an Ibanez bass amp that did have that button. rather than an overdrive, it was just a 10 db boost. But that sounds like a good video idea, I would really appreciate you demoing a bass distortion, your input is really unique to youtube and i'd like to know what you think.
My gallien Krueger bass amp has a very nice boost, Distortion Channel.
I sold off my bass many many moons ago and I've always regretted it. I want to get back into it, but I'm on an extreme budget. Came across this brand on Amazon so I'm kinda curious. I'm looking at one of their 5 strings.
I used to play sold my first one ever and my fender electric Acoustic and nice fender amp too. I just bought the bass rn lol been wanting to get back into it all these years too! Always regretted it too 😢

One way to fix the rattly tuners,would be some light grease, or synthetic oil.
After watching your video I actually got my hands on one of these. I didn't want to write anything until I really played it. I played it for about 3 months. Out of the box, this isn't a bad bass. It's weird weight balance is annoying, but can be fixed. I moved the strap knob near the bridge. It's very playable out of the box, but I couldn't just play it the way it is. I changed out the bridge (nothing really wrong with what it came with, just cheap). I also changed out the pickups. Overall for a beginners bass or a at home use bass it's not too bad. Would I bring it to a gig? Maybe. Maybe as a backup. Not sure if I would test it on a live setting, but honestly I don't think anything bad will happen. Just not sure I would chance it, due to professionalism. (not cool to have the bass cut out, I don't think it will, since I changed out all electronics.)
Definitely worth buying. For under $100. Great for beginners or at home bassists. Change out a few things and I would bring it on the road.
You know the bass amp is not supposed to have Overdrive to it, they make pedals for those who need the overdrive sound for a bass amp. Some select amps do however for bass come with the echo sounds for those who are playing the surf sound.

I sand down all of my Glarry guitar and bass guitar necks to where they are comfortable to me.
I would definately sand off the Glarry trademark in the headstock, and get a Fender sticker or a Gibson sticker.

I bought one just like this without the name on the headstock from Wish.com. I paid $70. I’m gonna upgrade the pickups and hardware. But, plugged in direct and through a good bass amp it sounds pretty good as is. Tuners like yours, were the worst part of the Bass.

I think if you look at the end grain of the fretboard you will see it is actually an engineered type of wood like laminated.

Would drilling a hole or two or three and packing them with lead the plug up the holes to correct the dive be viable? Or do a weight reduction cavity and then fill that. Also buy a broken fender p-bass and use it's parts to make this one better For fender Fridays !
