    Another video with great advice . And Another project to design and build as I don't have any form of skimming action . Just need a suitable size storage box with a clip on lid and a basket with micron mesh to catch the debris 😊

    I like your pond, the placement of the plants and stones... I was looking for some advice on where to put my pond pump. I'm installing a bottom drain with an aerator and wasn't sure if I needed a pump as well. I had visions of all my fishes fighting the current and being sucked into the drain. I saw a comment on another site where a pump was attached to a skimmer. The jury is still out on that one. I will have a water fall with about a four foot drop, also a bog and 2 jets to promote movement at the bottom of the pond.

      Maybe this video will help with you decide. Do ponds need bottom drains?

    Kev, Thank you for all your information. I'm learning a lot from your channel! Was wondering if the pumps make a loud noise, or is the noise muffled by the placement in side the skimmer or pond?

    Another useful video, thank you. One step further, using these existing figures can you illustrate where and how much waterfall foam is needed? Did you use any?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t use the expensive waterfall foam anymore, normal expanding foam works wonders and it’s much cheaper. I don’t have a formula for how much foam is needed, guess it depends on the gap sizes.

      Nothing specific for ducks. I’ve helped a few people recently design their duck ponds so will be interesting to see the outcomes.

    I already started so it's too late to change anything. But I put my pump on the downstream side of my bog filter. The bog sits beside the pond. Water from the pond enters the filter from near the bottom of the pond, via an underground pipe. The floor of the filter slopes upwards then drops off sharply to make an intake bay for the pump, which pumps water up to the waterfall which empties back into the pond. So the only thing driving water through the bog, is the water just naturally finding its level. I was just thinking it would be better to have the pump sitting in the cleanest water. Now I'm hoping the flow through the bog is fast enough so the intake area doesn't run dry. I think I'm just going to use pebbles, cus I live by the sea and they're free, so I can't imagine the pump out-pacing the flow through the bog. But I'm going to have to keep an eye on it when there are plants in there. I'm going to try ending up with pebbles in the 1/4 inch sort of size on the upper layers. And it's only a 1400 L/H pump, and the bog is pretty wide. I'm pretty sure water will go through it just fine

    Hey Kev, I was wondering, what would you consider a smaller pond that doesn't need a skimmer? I'm planning to build a small pond (around 5000 litre) and I'm wondering if I should have a skimmer or just place a pump in the bottom? I never built a pond before, so I'm trying to make it as simple as possible

    Hi Kev, thanks for sharing your experience. I have a question..., what does change for swim ponds that the submersible pump is installed outside the ponds? If it is to avoid possible electrical issues isn't the same being the water conductive? Thanks 😊

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use to think the exact same thing. But I believe it’s more the fact that the electrical cord is inside the water body with a submersible pump.

  • @Daantjer

    Is there a reason why when I look up pumps used in a dry setup it's always these pool style external pumps and never a pond pump like a superfish eco pond e-series for example? They are so incredibly energy efficient (not low voltage but can also be used in a dry setup if you're planning on swimming) so I don't understand why I never see any of these used?The wattage/litre just seems way superior to other 12v submersive or pool pumps and even air pumps for that matter. Am I missing something?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dry setups are a bit different, especially if the pump is sitting above water level. I just did a video on how you can plumb submersibles outside the pond.

  • @blueeyedsnake
    @blueeyedsnake ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! I never thought of it, but after watching this video I'm thinking if the reason why one should put an outside pomp in a swimming pond is because of electrocution danger?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  ปีที่แล้ว

      That exactly the reason. Some people go low volt, some go air driven and some go external.

    In the negative edge couldnt the pump potentially run dry if the pond water level falls?

    • @Ozponds

      Yes it could, same with a skimmer-intake bay or even anywhere if there was a leak in the plumbing and it went unnoticed.

    Hi Kev, I have an emergency, I think my pump has failed because of power surge due to energy rationing on a daily basis by the government, my question is how long is it safe enough to have no pump function as I don't have a backup pump but I am wanting to purchase variable speed jebao pumps online (2 obviously) I have 15 small koi with the largest not more than 12cm.my pond is estimated to be about 4000 litres. I don't have a air pump either

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard to say. The good news is koi are carp and they can breathe air at the surface if needed. Warmer water holds less oxygen. If it gets too hot you might want to try cooling the water. Bottles of water in the freezer, topping up with the tap are a couple of option when it’s hot. If you top up with a hose use a nozzle so more of the surface gets agitated. Hope that helps and good luck 🤞

      There’s air pumps for ponds that come with their little solar panel and don’t need electricity. Obviously they only work in daytime in sunny days (unless fitted with a battery storage) but in emergency situations it’s much better than nothing.
