      That the Three Gorges Dam is in trouble is more than just a rumor, because satellite photos show why it's in trouble. Where once the dam was a straight line across the river (when viewed from above), it is now crooked because some sections of the dam have shifted downstream under the pressure of water behind it. The Chinese government claims the satellite images are distorted somehow- yeah, right- but this is the same government that said, "Flu outbreak in Wuhan? What flu outbreak?" But don't take my word for any of this, look at the satellite imagery yourself, it's available on the internet. I saw it in a video posted to TH-cam yesterday by China in Focus (the images are at about the 11 minute mark).

    • @loumencken9644
      @loumencken9644 4 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      @@dustintacohands1107 If the dam did collapse, the loss of life would certainly be horrific, probably in the millions (depending on the suddenness of the collapse) since around 400 million people reportedly live downstream from it. However, I don't think it would be literally the end of the world- a massive blow to the world economy and a humanitarian catastrophe, yes, but worldwide armageddon, no. I suspect a collapse of the dam would bring the Chinese Communist regime down with it, in the same way Chernobyl hastened the downfall of the Soviet Union as Gorbachev later admitted. The ideal outcome would be that the dam stays up and there is political reform, but those satellite photos of the dam are terrifying.
      As far as fixing it, I never cease to be amazed at the resourcefulness of world-class engineers to come up with solutions to what seem to be the most intractable problems. But the cost would be staggering; I saw a guesstimate somewhere that a fix would cost more than it did to build the dam in the first place, which was $31 billion USD per Wikipedia. But the biggest problem is finding the political will to institute a repair program, and that is highly unlikely to occur. It would require the regime to admit that due to its incompetence and/or corruption, it bollixed up this showcase project. It is far more likely they will do nothing, ignore the problem, and simply disappear any Chinese engineer who has the temerity to sound the alarm, just like they disappeared the brave doctors who warned of the coming Covid epidemic. Given this, if I were Chinese and living near the Yangtze, I'd pray to every god I could think of that there are light rains in the area for the next hundred years.

    The cement was even cooled to avoid premature curing when they built the Hoover dam. It has stood the test of time and is one of the greatest civil engineering tasks of all time and they made it beautiful as well as functional . Not so much this one though. Wasn’t this under the control of the CCP? There’s no excuse for not getting a quality build and the Chinese government is not slow to deal with dissenters and malingerers in any other context. This may explain why so many newly minted Chinese millionaires are able to purchase land in other countries and ruin them.

      Not anymore...my heart and soul could no longer bear the torment and guilt acting like a slave driver for a greedy employer. My employer may boast his wealth and political influence...I am but a salary man who wishes to work professionally, honest and live a quiet life...possibly playing mmo in my free time...I rather not have huge ambition at the cost of human misery.
      Also once I've resigned I will submit a lengthy report and complaint to various related federal agency...I am thankful that the covid-19 pandemic has weaken communist influence in my country in southeast Asia. Perhaps the corrupt officials in my country will ignore my words or at worst silenced me...but the guilt is now on them...if you've seen and experienced what I have seen...you will shudder at how greed had made people inhuman...there are other job with less pay but at least I still have my humanity and if I die, my soul is clean. Free fall of concrete from heights of up to 150 ft (46 m), directly over rebar or at high slumps, does not cause segregation, or reduce compressive strength. Restricting free-fall heights does decrease concrete production rates, increasing owners' costs without increasing concrete quality and it has been proven.

      Sure some Chinese steel is great, but the majority is mainly for looks. The difference in quality is stark between different brands and batches.
      The articles you see admonishing people for believing that all Chinese steel is bad, are nearly all pure propaganda. You can tell because they are written to make you feel bad about your assumptions, instead of giving you a factual reason to change your mind, and explaining why it's wrong to assume something without evidence. Propaganda evokes an emotional response from you by playing on your fears and self belief. A convincing argument will challenge you in difficult ways, but relies on reason and evidence to do so.

    OH MY GOD, the utter state of that concrete reinforced rebar.
    It's not a question of if Three Gorges Dam will collapse.
    It's a question of when.

    I sailed past the dam in the late 1990s when it was under construction. I am in construction. Concrete has no elasticity. It is not millimeters but probably a few meters of bulging. Cannot believe cracks have not appeared by now.
    The massive thickness is resisting the millions of tons of water for now. But when it fractures, it will happen very fast. Water force will crack the massive wall. Gravity will pull a big section down. It will not be a slow motion event. Gravity accelerates at 32 ft per sec every second.
    Gravity also pulls the massive torrent downstream. Watch those landslides videos and you undertand. No time to even flee as this tsunami sweeps everything in its path. However, those much frther downstream will have time to lee as the torrent will not accelerate forever.
    It may take a week to reach Shanghai.

    When building something like this you have to pour the concrete quickly so the adjacent section will weld or "stick" to it. Just a thought.

    This is the way it works in China. The government allocates $1000 for each resident, but does not publicize the amount. From the top level, the directive gets passed on to lower and lower level until it reaches the local district that distributes the fund. By the time each resident receives the fund, it's around $10.

    There is another issue here and I witnessed it on a much smaller scale about ten years ago. Ground saturation. We were having record breaking heavy rains in the spring. The ground was saturated. Early one morning the upper local reservoir over topped. It did not break luckily, but the amount of water over running it was enormous. When all that water got down to a lower smaller reservoir, that embankment collapsed. Further down the creek in line, was the small village I lived near. The saturated ground rejected the water that was added by what were normally small streams and it just kept on flowing down the creek growing in massive amount. And it did not slow down. In fact, it sped up because the creek banks were saturated! The entire village was flooded. Now, multiply those same hydro dynamics times fifty million, and the consequences are tragic. Lets hope that the Chinese government has abandoned the low quality product, the do as your told engineering labor, the high ranking government corruption, and the careless attitude towards her people that the Communist government has embraced over the last 200 years. I hope to God she holds. Ya. That and half a buck will get you a cup of coffee. It does not look good, does it?

    A dam built in the 1990's is going to burst, and as bad it is it looks like it will be soon. Due to the incompetency of the CCP despite concerns and corruption, lives have been lost, and places damaged for years to come. However take a look at historic landmarks like the rainbow bridge, which has unfortunately been damaged. Its amazing a bridge is 900 years old and there's still sections that remain and have withstood the waters now and before. A bridge that is almost 1000 years old does a better job than the three gorges dam, architects then designed the base of the bridge with a purpose in mind to slow waters speed downstream. Rather than CCP funded corporations embezzling money and building something that only looks good but will ultimately have no function. When it does collapse I pray for the ordinary people, and hopefully, these recent events will show the world that communism needs to be drowned out forever.

    The dam is permanently closed as a tourist attraction. Could that be because they don't want ANYONE to take a telescopic photo from one end of the structure to the other end- a photo that would clearly reveal whether or not the road, or handrails or whatever was originally Installed along the top of the dam, was still straight. They would have a hard time claiming all tourists' photos are photo shopped to make them look bad. Better to ban all site photos outright and then go with the "satellite photos are inaccurate and doctored by hostile foreign governments to bring shame upon us." That'll clear the problem right up, and isn't any more rediculous than their claims about having no new covid-19 cases at all for weeks.

    It splits the nation north south. When it goes 1/3rd of the country slips underwater. The water is 12 inches from over topping the dam - assuming it can take the punishment. There are a world of doubters.

    • @ChadDidNothingWrong
      @ChadDidNothingWrong ปีที่แล้ว

      You only need law to compensate for cultural failures.....the worse the culture the more need law.
      Its why I take issue with immigration rates today as well as general cultural imposition...its rare to ever have communities, much less whole societies with little need for laws.
      ....and when a honest and cooperative society arises, nobody seems to understand how its unique societal culture is responsible for everything good about it. And because noone understands this, noone protects the purity of such regional cultures.
      Japan is a great example of a place with very cooperative culture...theres many places in Japan where they could go full-on anarchy, and you genuinely might not even notice. as the social pressures and personal values may often carry even more weight than the law.......but just imagine what would happen if they just opened their borders. It wouldn't even be Japan anymore, but rather an amalgamation of the surrounding nations...complete with all their problems.
