  • In this video I rebuild two 1/2" drive SK Ratchets. These were my grandfather's old tools. I am happy to give them a second chance to turn some nuts and bolts again. The nostalgia is heavy and they will always remind me of my grandpa's garage!
Thank you SK Tools! A fine high quality tool company that still stands behind their products. Thank you for helping repair these old ratchets! Go team USA! #Merica

Thanks for not ruining these with the DT upgrade kits.

These should have been direct, as close to the original as possible, new replacement. I just used one of them yesterday on a high torque project! Thanks for watching! 👍😁

I’m glad to know I’m not alone in loving old tools. Old American made ratchets are my crack. I got my grandpas sk 42470 and a snap-on L715. Rebuilt them both and really enjoyed that. The snap-on is a 1951 and came out of my Great grandpa‘s collection. He was a mechanic for John Deere after WW1.

I have a soft spot for old American made tools! Tools that have been in the family are even more valuable. I feel a connection with my Grandfather whenever I use his old ratchets! Thanks for watching and sharing! Take good care of those old tools! 👍😁

Great video, I have 3 1/2" model 42470 also. My main concern was I seen mine had some rounded teeth in the actual head housing also, but since I seen that your rebuild still worked I'm going to give it a shot. Glad I found your video, well done.

Thanks! I was happy to rescue these old ratchets from the scrap hopper! I still use them now. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

@FlatThunder OK, so if the gear teeth are worn/rounded in the head housing, do you know of any kind of sleeve or ways to fix the rounded teeth or is the ratchet basically shot? My head housing the gear teeth are pretty rounded, not sure if even the new ratchet unit will work and I'd hate to throw it away, thanks again for the info.

@@DeanMeilken Hi Dean! Contact SK and they can direct you with the best solution. They might have you send in the ratchet body for repair or they might scrap your unit and send out a new one. I think the internal ring gears can be replaced, but I do not know how economical it is for the company. They are a great company and they take care of their customers / products! I did not explore this option further because these old ratchets hold some sentimental value. They were my grandpa's and I would turn it into wall art if I couldn't repair it. Best of luck on the repair! 👍😁

Just inherited some of these from my dad. Not the best way to get tools but am glad to see I can get them working again. Thanks for the video.

Sorry for your loss! If you fix them up you will think of him every time you put them to use. I tried one of these out on my old cabover truck. It gave me fond memories of my grandpa with every ratchet click. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

Good job with the tool repair, I don't think the large ratchet is going to hold up for long. It will let you down at some point.

Hi George! Thanks! I think you might be right. The internal gear inside the head did have a few teeth with major damage. So far I only tested it out on a single bolt, but I'll keep using it till the mechanism breaks. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

Is there a way to narrow down a manufacture date from the model number? Wondering if they are from before or after the shop burned down.

Not sure, but I'm guessing each serial number would have a year built range. I ordered the rebuild kits from the model number (s). Thanks for watching! 👍😁

Hard to believe it's been over 3 years since I smashed it.... It's almost back to normal, but not quite. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

The trick is to use...Spring Clip Pliers!!....yeah dont know why you failed to mention that you dont have the right tool for the job?

Haha I do tend to say that often! I'll have to add one to the specialty tool wish list. The complicated part would be locating them when I need them. Thanks for watching 👍😁
