Breville / Sage Bambino Plus Review Part 7 Comparing Dual Wall & Standard Baskets

  • In the last Sage Bambino Plus video, I compared freshly ground coffee via the standard basket, to pre-ground coffee via the dual walled baskets, using the exact same coffee whole bean and pre-ground.
    I've been asked in the comments about other comparisons of the two baskets, so in this video, I'm comparing the taste of pre-ground coffee with both baskets, and also freshly ground coffee with both baskets.
    I'm wanting to see if the dual walled basket really makes much of a difference when it comes to making espresso with pre-ground coffee, and while I was at it, I thought I'd see how espresso is made with freshly ground coffee tasted via the dual walled baskets.

    By the way...If you're in the UK, and you're thinking of buying a Sage machine (any Sage machine, not only their coffee machines), join my mailing list at coffeeblog.co.uk and then drop me an email to see if I have a current discount code to share. I don't currently get Breville discounts, sorry, but I do sometimes have Sage Appliances UK discount codes to share.

    This is the best experiment I’ve seen on the internet for the dual wall vs single wall question.
    Essentially, the biggest difference lies in the beans - fresh grind makes the biggest difference in all.
    Once using fresh properly ground coffee, single wall vs dual wall makes only a marginal difference.

    This was super handy, thanks a lot for doing this comparison. Also, straight to the point in the video which was great! I'm having a bit of an issue where the dual wall basket is blocked and coffee isn't flowing out at all - not sure if some coffee has got stuck somewhere between the walls - fingers crossed will get fixed! Thanks again.

    When I used a pressurized basket in the past, I'd tamp it like a single wall and it worked ok. BUT sometimes the flow rate got real inconsistent and that was because the little hole on the bottom got plugged every once in a while. If one little hole gets plugged in my single wall, no big deal cause there's a billion other holes. I recommend that if using a dual wall, take a pin and poke it in the basket hole on the bottom before every use.

      @BaysviewPg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andre Lederer, I can't extend the brewing time with the pressurized basket from 13 seconds to 25 seconds. My dose is 18g. My grinder is set at 10, I owned a bambino plus and a smart grinder pro. If you are able to achieve 25 seconds of brew time (at the same time also meet the brew ratio of 1:2), please share your settings. Thank you

    fantastic videos- Thanks for all the hard work- tedious work, but results in valuable info- Gaggia Classic Pro- Can you get good enough steamed milk from it? Would that be the machine to go with for entry level as it's a workhorse machine over a home appliance like the bambino? Would the Gaggia be just too difficult for a dolt liek me to get good drinkable espressos time and time again? Unfortunately I gotta drink very low acid coffees- so that really limits the beans i can get, andl ikely taste too- I guess though the Classic Pro although a bit tougher to handle woudl last longer?

    This is just the comparison I've been looking for as a coffee beginner. The thing I don't understand is why all the youtube experts are _so_ disparaging of the pressurised baskets. Is it just coffee snobbery gone mad? I fully understand they / you will have very developed palettes but is taking that view, saying that pressurised baskets are worthless if not downright the work of the devil, is that really helpful to the general public they are talking to if the difference is actually minimal? Fine if you happen to be a connoisseur or but I think it is unhelpful and confusing to the general public, at least without giving that context. As always, thanks for an excellent vid 👏

  • @johnjames01
    @johnjames01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting comparison! I thought the same when the pre-ground flew through the single walled basket. I'd say it almost feels like a sin, putting pre-ground through it, even though it's only for testing purposes 😊

  • @tonygibbons5
    @tonygibbons5 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting!! 🧐👀 I guess you had dialled in for the freshly ground coffee? Would be interesting to see the same comparison but when you're not quite dialled in, to see if the double wall could "save" a bad shot! ☕

  • @Varietea
    @Varietea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video thanks, any chance you could also do one explaining which basket to use with which shot button? E.g I'm making coffees for 2 people, which button and basket is best? Were you using the 2 cup basket for 1 lungo in the video? I'm confused! 🙈😅

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Varietea. So when I'm talking about dual walled or single walled, this is the two types of basket. "Dual Walled" are Sage/Breville's answer to pressured baskets, intended to be used with pre-ground coffee. There are single and double dual walled baskets, and single and double standard baskets. If you're grinding your own, with a grinder that is capable of grinding fine enough for espresso, then ignore the dual walled baskets, and just use your standard baskets. When it comes to which basket to use - it's up to you. If you're pulling a single shot, you can use the single basket, or use the double basket to pull two single shots at the same time. Personally, I only ever drink double shots, and if I was making a drink for someone else using a single shot (for instance if someone wants a latte and they tell me they only want one shot) I'd pull a double, into two shot cups, and I'd down the other one ;-).

      Thanks Paul. There's the Sage Duo Temp Pro which is a tad cheaper - there's the Gaggia classic at around the same price point, th-cam.com/video/1DFoHNHiDJs/w-d-xo.html completely different kind of machine though. For more see: bit.ly/2C51MMU

    very interesting video! just yesterday our new Bambino Plus, purchased on Amazon, arrived and, surprise!, the box contains 4 filters, single and double wall so it's correct what you say in the video for new stock 🙂 at the moment we don't have a grinder so I guess my best choice is to use the double wall with pre-ground coffee, correct? just out of curiosity, what have you placed under the cup, I suppose to bring it closer to the filter holder?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Emiliano :-). Yeah, without a grinder you'd use the double walled baskets. What I've placed under the cup in this video is brew scales. These ones I used in this video were the Brewista Smart Scale 2, but I managed to break them ;-), so I've been trying alternatives, see: th-cam.com/video/-AFA7QTNDi8/w-d-xo.html and : th-cam.com/video/ZMBBh6_qVwM/w-d-xo.html Cheers :-)

    Hi Kev, I've got the Sage Bambino for a couple of months and have been using dual walled baskets with pre-ground coffee. I decided to order some espresso ground coffee from a specialty coffee roaster and try to use the single walled basket. However it didn't flow through either of single walled or dual walled. I've been reading and some people said that there's a plastic liner in the portafilter that's meant for pressurised basket and should be removed when using normal basket. Any comment on this?

    I only drink my espresso's as flat whites or lattes using the dual wall basket and pre-ground coffee. Do you think the taste difference is enough between the single and dual wall baskets to warrant me shelling out on a decent grinder in order to use the single wall baskets? Not sure if it'll make enough taste difference when creating milky drinks?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Ross, you raise a very good question. Its difficult to answer really as it depends on how sensitive your palate is, but its generally harder to detect under extraction once mixed with milk. Ahh, another video required me thinks! 🤣

    Would changing the portafilter to one that comes from the barista express or duo temp or infuser with the standard basket make any difference? Or does the portafilter not change the taste at all?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you certainly could do this, whether it would make any difference to taste, I'm not sure, the biggest improvement would probably come from using a bottomless portafilter, as this gives feedback that you wouldn't usually get on what's going on with the shot - and it looks really cool! ;-) Cheers.

      Run a shot through it just before you put the portafilter in.

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as Giftageek has suggested, running water through the group, with the portafilter inserted, is a good idea. If you keep your up under the portafilter, and run a couple of shots worth of water through it into your cup before you pull your first shot, you'll be warming everything up, including the cup - and as your cup is taking the hot water, you won't be filling up the small drip tray either. Cheers.

    Is there a difference in tamping pressure between standard and dual walled baskets?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't say there's a different pressure required, but the tamp will probably make less difference with the dual walled baskets.
