106????????? I my gosh!!!!! I was born Jan 6 1982 and I watched this show every episode (some to young to remember but I was with my mom in room) and this show was a huge part of my childhood. I can't believe he was still alive. 😭😭 How beautiful he was such a nice man.
@@moochercat Ed Flanders death came as a shock to me, especially through suicide...I only found out about this around 10 years ago...So sad St. Elsewhere was the template for the likes of ER, but far better It's a pity that it didn't run for longer, it could easily have run for a couple of more seasons ER went on for far too long
Ed Flanders was my favorite character on that show. He was an incredible actor, you truly believed he was the doctor he played and a role model to the other doctors both on the show and in real life.
One of the most creative and best acted television shows EVER. It was "can't miss" television and yet it never got great ratings which is a total mystery to me. If the broadcast networks want a template for a new show, look no further than St. Elsewhere.
ER has nothing on St. Elsewhere..this show set a precedent. Never tired of watching it in reruns a few years back when PAX had it on. Extremely well done show with such and extremely stellar class of actors. A very special show none other in it's genre has come close since.
Both "St Elsewhere" & "Hill Street Blues" elevated television drama (and the medical and police genres) to a whole new level back in the 80's. Adding a sense of grittiness and realism that had not been seen on American network television previously. The following decade in the 90's saw "ER" & "NYPD Blue" pick up the mantle and push the creative and dramatic envelope even further.
All medical dramas owe their roots to St Elsewhere as cop shows owe Hill Street Blues. Pioneering, trailblazing TV which pushed it to the limits and beyond.
+Rick Dunn I think one can argue in hindsight that St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues represented the best of their respected genres up to that point in time,and so were both extremely influential.But in fairness,the roots for those genres run a bit deeper than that.One shouldn't forget Dragnet and Ben Casey for example,important shows for their time.They weren't the kind of large ensemble shows that the later series were,but in certain respects they still set a template.
Fordham1969 Rick Dunn is right. The shows you mention are classics but weren't the format that the hospital & police shows that followed were built on the way St Elsewhere & Hill St were.

He's still working too, but he stopped playing tennis three years ago after a fall! No wonder he looks so good! He's good friends with Begley and Mandell and he was rescued from Hollywood blacklisting by Alfred Hitchcock, a longtime associate of his.
I just finished binge-watching this show and didn't know what to do with myself after...this show should've lasted way longer...it was so great the best doctor shows I have ever seen...the most real...even though most of the cast died and everything was always tragic...
This was a brilliant show from TVs last-gasp Golden Era just before the arrival of cable. It's now largely overlooked but its role in the evolution of television drama was profound. Numerous Hollywood careers were launched by the program, most notably Denzel Washington. It's a shame that young people are deprived of experiencing these great old series with their awesome opening music and terrific ensemble casts. In those days the writers turned out original plot lines and top-notch dialogue, unlike the wretched garbage we see on TV these days. It's a nostalgic kick to see this video.
Norman Lloyd is a few weeks short of his 98th birthday here and still seems just as sharp as ever.The same with William Daniels,who's 85 here,and him and his wife Bonnie have been married over 60 years.Pretty amazing.
As a RN, who worked at MGH in Boston, this show was so relatable and entertaining. To this day, my all time favorite. No other hospital/medical show comes close. Incredible acting and how they shot it, amazing lifelike action.
One of the first shows I was addicted to watching. I was in love with Dr. Westphall's daughter. :) One of the great lines I use to this day was uttered by Dr. Craig when the power went out in surgery: "Oh, for crying out loud." Great character development, ensemble, direction, stories. Just wow. RIP, those who have passed and gave us such wonderful memories.

flon57 there have been cop shows and hospital shows since Television began but yes HILL ST.and ST ELSEWHERE began to really change the look of television making it grittier and attracting a higher caliber of acting [I emphasize sometimes!] good to see these old dogs show up again!!

Thank you for all your performance. I loved this show when it was aired in Taiwan in my college years, and your characters had a positive impact on my career. Yesterday I took a walk for some fresh air in the pandemic, and decided to pay a visit the Franklin Square apartment where the "St. Eligius Hospital" was, the first time after almost 35 years!! It really took me back.
Such a monumental series... highly underrated. I absolutely love this show, and this amazing cast. They got most of the principle players for the interview! And wow... Norman Lloyd looks fantastic! Thanks so much for the post!
Tragic the way Ed Flanders died. Poor guy took his own life after suffering Depression, Alcoholism & was severely injured in a Car Accident towards the end. Rest In Peace.
@@Jotinko, I know this is a response to an old post, but per google searches and Matt Groening, the name origin of Ned Flanders on "The Simpsons" is from a road in Portland, Oregon (Groening's hometown). As a fan of both "St. Elsewhere" and "The Simpsons", I too wondered if Ned was named after Ed Flanders, but it seems the name simililarity is just a coincidence.

St. Elsewhere, Remington Steel, Hill Street Blues, The Equalizer, Hunter, LA Law, Night Court, The Golden Girls, Designing Women, The Facts of Life, Gimme A Break, The Cosby Show, A Different World, Kate and Allie, Mel's Diner, WKRP, Full House, Family Matters, Family Ties, Punky Brewster, My 2 Dads, Cheers, 227, etc....and thats only the TV Shows! Those were the days! 🥺🤧
Mark Harmon being his humble self let everyone else speak of the show but he still played such a great roll in this hit series. It was nice to see them all reunite.
I got to interview Bonnie Bartlett last weekend at Goldencon to discuss her appearance on The Golden Girls. She’s still as witty as ever at 92! She & her husband William Daniels (aka Me.Feenie) are the only married couple to both win an emmy on the same night!
Can’t believe it’s been so long. But I also can’t believe I’m in my senior years now. I’m glad my generation had this show and others upon which we can look now with appreciation. How I wish that more recent generations could have a chance to come home after work and watch this great era in tv history with their families. These shows brought us together in the evenings, and we’d talk about characters, plot lines, current events, and universal themes. These great shows made us think and discuss topics that were relevant in the day. I was a great fan of William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett. [Daniels will forever be John Adams (1776) to me!] But St. Elsewhere had such a great ensemble of actors who broke the Ben Casey mold of doctors and hospitals! Characters were written as real people, who struggled with real life issues; sometimes they won, and other times they failed really miserably. But in the end, they were characters that mirrored us, as the Boomers got married, began careers, and wrestled with the messiness of life. Although I disliked the ending when it aired, I look back upon it now some 40+ years later and understand. It couldn’t have wrapped any other way. Great era; great tv show; and great memories! Thank you, St. Elsewhere. Thank you!
St. Elsewhere is my favorite show of all time. I loved the ending, and I loved the "Time Heals" episodes with Edward Hermann and Craig, Aucshlander, Westphall, et. al as younger versions of themselves.
Also uttered the iconic "Plastics" line in "The Graduate". On one of the St E episodes, Craig and his wife went to Philadephia which is where they met at Penn U. She said something about him having a great singing voice but he never would sing. He broke into song with, "It's hot as Hell in Philadelphia" which was a reference to "1776" in which he played John Adams.
But don't forget he'll also always be known as Dr. Mark Craig which earned him multiple Emmy nominations and a win. Also considered one of the greatest tv characters of all time.
The ending had a LOT of references to other shows. Andy Griffith, The Fugitive, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and MASH. The next to last show had some of the Steve Allen Show cast as parents of the doctors who came to town for the Dr of the Year banquet.
I still believe it should have ended with the fat lady singing. Sorry, but it all being a dream sucked. The fat lady was far superior ending, and more appropriate.

Brilliant TV...along with Hill St. Blues & Homicide Life on the Street, and even Sports Night. Great shows that never found an audience. Viewers had no idea what they were missing. Some of today's dramas don't come even close to these great series, IMHO.
As good as shows like NYPD Blue, LA Law, ER, The Sopranos, The Shield and Breaking Bad are as tv dramas I personally think Hill Street, Homicide and St. Elsewhere are the best television dramas ever made and it's mind boggling that they weren't getting the viewerships they deserved. Why do people prefer to watch crap and make them top rated yet mostly ignore some high quality work? Boggles the mind!
@@kendallrivers1119 Agreed…HLOTS, Hill Street and Sports Night (another ‘gem’) had such a ‘Real-life’ side to them, and gave a different perspective of the police and lifetime drama, heavily influenced with effective dialogue. These shows were in a class all by themselves, JMO
Great to see so many of them still with us (back when this was recorded in 2012). Hopefully they'll release more than just the first season on DVD soon ;)
I think one of the greatest tv shows ever, and I do mean ever. It still doesn't necessarily get the credit it deserves. It was way better than most of the schlocky tv shows on today. Trying to compare a show like Grey's anatomy to this show is like comparing a rols Royce to a Yugo.
The best! Phenomenal cast, excellent writing...and a theme song that resonates in my heart to this day. Today's offerings can't hold a candle to this level of quality TV.

His very last role was in a movie called "Bye bye love." ... He was very good in it and it, IMO, was a very underrated movie. It wasn't great, but was very solid.
St.elsewhere was one of my favourites and as I sit here I remember getting to do the voting for shows for the week via a box that kept track of what u watched and filling out a form,I was a young teen then. I do not remember what it was called but it was for ratings..
William Daniels (the best of the best), and his wife Bonnie, David Birney, Mark Harmon, Howie Mandel, Eric Laneuville, Christina Pickles, Stephen Furst, Ed Begley,Jr., Bruce Paltrow and all of the wonderfully talented actors and directors who graced this show are in my heart forever! Ironically, I was wowed by the ending of the show, and now I have by own son with autism--who is fascinated by snow globes. Thank you, thank you.
It was the First Medical Drama that I loved watching way before there was A ER or even a Grey's Anatomy. It really did a lot. I remember Christina Pickles playing Countess Elena De Poulignac who owned a Art Gallery on Another World. Judith Light, Sydney Penny, Eric Stoltz, and Lisa Bonet also guest starred on the Show. Denzel won Two Oscars and a Tony Award. It dealt with Breast Cancer, AIDS and Autism way before it became a National Issue. Also, I remember the Actor who played Coolidge on The White Shadow (Also Produced By Bruce Paltrow) mistaking Timothy Van Patten for Salami.
Byron Stewart was Warren Coolidge. He was a crossover to St E. Warren got a basketball scholarship to Boston U but a knee injury ended his career. He wound up an orderly at St Eligius.
In the first season, they also had a suicide, terrorist bombing, full-out gang rumble within the hospital, and sex-change operation, just to name a few subjects.
Denzel Washington was the "breakout star" of this incredible ensemble cast. David Morse to me was always the heart of the show's first season. His performance in the first episode really established the authenticity and struggles of being a brand new doctor. A truly selfless occupation.
I loved this show as a kid and faithfully watched each and every episode. I don't know if many people remember that David Birney was billed as the 'star' of the show before it aired. I read in an interview with him that he didn't realize his role wouldn't be as prominent as he thought, due to the ensemble nature of the show. He quit after the first season to star in an ABC fluff show called 'Glitter'. I remember an exquisite scene he had in a bar setting and how gorgeous and heart-breaking the dialogue was. I could never understand why any actor would leave such a rich, character-driven show. I'd rather have a smaller role in a stellar show, than a larger one in something that was just 'meh' (as so much television was back then).
No mention of Ed Flanders, just clips of his excellent acting. This show was groundbreaking in its day! R.I.P. to all the cast members that have gone on to that St. Elsewhere hospital in the sky! 😷❤️👼🏼
Such a phenomenal show and ensemble cast when it wasn't common. And for those who don't know - the things announced over the PA system and characters that were referenced from other Bruce Paltrow shows: Mary Tyler Moore, White Shadow,....made this show more intellectual and funny. In a class by itself. Eric Laneuville deserves recognition amongst a great cast who went on to become incredibly accomplished.

Breakthrough series with unapologetic grit & wit with characters you’d love to hate & broken heroes just doing a job. It had not been matched. Only inspired.
If it hasn't already been noted, there should be a compilation of in-jokes that the show did for several of its regular cast and many of its guest stars. Mark Harmon hailed by Fiskus as "the sexiest man alive" (hat tip/People Magazine). When Matt Frewer, who did Coke commercials, guest-starred on the show, one of the nurses told him to "catch the wave" (the slogan from the commercial) just to name a couple. Favorite scene? When Bruce Greenwood's character Goofy Glued Ronny Cox"s doctor into his office, so he couldn't get out. Then, William Daniels and Ed Begley Jr. interacting every day. Great TV!
There was a template for St. Elsewhere. "Medical Center" which starred James Daly, father of Tyne and Tim, ran on CBS a decade before. But the staff at St. Eligius was great and still brings back found memories. Also, Eric Laneuville was one of the 'kids' in "Room 222."
It was that long ago. I was working at a Boston ER and saw most of the shows in repeat. Everyone did such a great job! That same building is on Washington Street in the south end of Boston. One of my friends worked there, but the building was used for detoxing and being clean. Some of it was very real. The feelings of the shows were much the same as watching MASH.
I'm re-watching the first season. Morse had too skinny of a head/face for that much hair....it was very Garfunkle-esque (circa 1970). I liked Morse on "St. Elsewhere", but his detective character on "House M.D." was played too well for me to where I still don't like watching those scenes whenever I re-watch that series. Mark Harmon played Ted Bundy in a made-for-TV movie if I remember correctly and he also played that real-life persona too well. It probably hurt Harmon in getting some future roles because people saw him and then just thought..."that's Ted Bundy".
I love this show. People wonder why it didn't get better ratings. I've thought maybe it was the kitsch comedy that saw a one-man band parading through the ER, a guy who thought he was a bird taking a flying leap out the window, and black humor in the morgue. These over-the-top camp hijinks were sprinkled throughout, and you were always wondering when they were gonna send in the clowns. I admit I didn't like the cheesy farce at first, but what can I say...it grew on you. The more serious scenes balanced it out, and the wonderful acting/writing was impeccable. I can't decide who was my favorite character. Either Ed Flanders' Dr. Westphall or Howie Mandel's Dr. Fiscus -- although I have a notion Howie was just playing himself. He's never changed! But they all were GREAT!! A perfect fit. Catch it right now on Hulu.
I found this when I got reminiscent about my favorite! My 8 year old self was so in Luther and Dr. Morrison. I will never forgot Mark Harmon's character contracting AIDS. It was my first time seeing that in a tv show. St. Elsewhere was truly cutting edge.

Sagan Lewis and Jennifer Savidge were both part of the show from the early seasons but they were never listed in the opening credits until the final season. David Birney and G W Bailey were both in the first season but were "Chuck Cunningham-ed" starting with the second season. Cynthia Sykes was "Chucked" in season 3 or 4.

I'm 49. I have decades of TV in my head. This show remains my favorite. I also believe it was the best thing no one watched.

Upon rewatch of the series I was shocked to see that every single episode has some guest star that went on to do something great..
The unsung hero was the casting director! Unbelievable cast and they had an incredible eye for talent.

Such a monumental series... highly underrated. I absolutely love this show, and this amazing cast. They got most of the principle players for the interview! And wow... Norman Lloyd looks fantastic! Thanks so much for the post!

Tragic the way Ed Flanders died. Poor guy took his own life after suffering Depression, Alcoholism & was severely injured in a Car Accident towards the end. Rest In Peace.

@@Jotinko, I know this is a response to an old post, but per google searches and Matt Groening, the name origin of Ned Flanders on "The Simpsons" is from a road in Portland, Oregon (Groening's hometown). As a fan of both "St. Elsewhere" and "The Simpsons", I too wondered if Ned was named after Ed Flanders, but it seems the name simililarity is just a coincidence.
I was 11 when that show started & loved it. Finally got the wife watching the re-runs, she's a nurse & loves the show too.

St. Elsewhere, Remington Steel, Hill Street Blues, The Equalizer, Hunter, LA Law, Night Court, The Golden Girls, Designing Women, The Facts of Life, Gimme A Break, The Cosby Show, A Different World, Kate and Allie, Mel's Diner, WKRP, Full House, Family Matters, Family Ties, Punky Brewster, My 2 Dads, Cheers, 227, etc....and thats only the TV Shows! Those were the days! 🥺🤧
Mark Harmon being his humble self let everyone else speak of the show but he still played such a great roll in this hit series. It was nice to see them all reunite.

I got to interview Bonnie Bartlett last weekend at Goldencon to discuss her appearance on The Golden Girls. She’s still as witty as ever at 92! She & her husband William Daniels (aka Me.Feenie) are the only married couple to both win an emmy on the same night!
Can’t believe it’s been so long. But I also can’t believe I’m in my senior years now.
I’m glad my generation had this show and others upon which we can look now with appreciation. How I wish that more recent generations could have a chance to come home after work and watch this great era in tv history with their families. These shows brought us together in the evenings, and we’d talk about characters, plot lines, current events, and universal themes. These great shows made us think and discuss topics that were relevant in the day.
I was a great fan of William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett. [Daniels will forever be John Adams (1776) to me!] But St. Elsewhere had such a great ensemble of actors who broke the Ben Casey mold of doctors and hospitals! Characters were written as real people, who struggled with real life issues; sometimes they won, and other times they failed really miserably. But in the end, they were characters that mirrored
us, as the Boomers got married, began careers, and wrestled with the messiness of life. Although I disliked the ending when it aired, I look back upon it now some 40+ years later and understand. It couldn’t have wrapped any other way. Great era; great tv show; and great memories! Thank you, St. Elsewhere. Thank you!
Howie Mandell's trip to heaven in 'After life' made a huge impact on me.

St. Elsewhere is my favorite show of all time. I loved the ending, and I loved the "Time Heals" episodes with Edward Hermann and Craig, Aucshlander, Westphall, et. al as younger versions of themselves.

I tell ya William Daniels has one of the most iconic voices ever. Not only will he forever be Mr. Feeney to me, but also K.I.T.T. Love the 80's/90's.
Also uttered the iconic "Plastics" line in "The Graduate". On one of the St E episodes, Craig and his wife went to Philadephia which is where they met at Penn U. She said something about him having a great singing voice but he never would sing. He broke into song with, "It's hot as Hell in Philadelphia" which was a reference to "1776" in which he played John Adams.

But don't forget he'll also always be known as Dr. Mark Craig which earned him multiple Emmy nominations and a win. Also considered one of the greatest tv characters of all time.

The ending was epic! lt begged every issue raised. And set the stage for the final Newhart show.
The ending had a LOT of references to other shows. Andy Griffith, The Fugitive, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and MASH. The next to last show had some of the Steve Allen Show cast as parents of the doctors who came to town for the Dr of the Year banquet.
I still believe it should have ended with the fat lady singing. Sorry, but it all being a dream sucked. The fat lady was far superior ending, and more appropriate.
Newhart is in the Tommyverse.
I recall watching the last episode as it faded into the Snow globe, I don't think I quite understood it at the time...and was mystified...

Brilliant TV...along with Hill St. Blues & Homicide Life on the Street, and even Sports Night. Great shows that never found an audience. Viewers had no idea what they were missing. Some of today's dramas don't come even close to these great series, IMHO.
As good as shows like NYPD Blue, LA Law, ER, The Sopranos, The Shield and Breaking Bad are as tv dramas I personally think Hill Street, Homicide and St. Elsewhere are the best television dramas ever made and it's mind boggling that they weren't getting the viewerships they deserved. Why do people prefer to watch crap and make them top rated yet mostly ignore some high quality work? Boggles the mind!
@@kendallrivers1119 Agreed…HLOTS, Hill Street and Sports Night (another ‘gem’) had such a ‘Real-life’ side to them, and gave a different perspective of the police and lifetime drama, heavily influenced with effective dialogue. These shows were in a class all by themselves, JMO

I think one of the greatest tv shows ever, and I do mean ever. It still doesn't necessarily get the credit it deserves. It was way better than most of the schlocky tv shows on today. Trying to compare a show like Grey's anatomy to this show is like comparing a rols Royce to a Yugo.

The best! Phenomenal cast, excellent writing...and a theme song that resonates in my heart to this day. Today's offerings can't hold a candle to this level of quality TV.

I agree, Flanders was outstanding...my favorite actor on the show.
His very last role was in a movie called "Bye bye love." ... He was very good in it and it, IMO, was a very underrated movie. It wasn't great, but was very solid.

St.elsewhere was one of my favourites and as I sit here I remember getting to do the voting for shows for the week via a box that kept track of what u watched and filling out a form,I was a young teen then. I do not remember what it was called but it was for ratings..

William Daniels (the best of the best), and his wife Bonnie, David Birney, Mark Harmon, Howie Mandel, Eric Laneuville, Christina Pickles, Stephen Furst, Ed Begley,Jr., Bruce Paltrow and all of the wonderfully talented actors and directors who graced this show are in my heart forever! Ironically, I was wowed by the ending of the show, and now I have by own son with autism--who is fascinated by snow globes. Thank you, thank you.
It was the First Medical Drama that I loved watching way before there was A ER or even a Grey's Anatomy. It really did a lot. I remember Christina Pickles playing Countess Elena De Poulignac who owned a Art Gallery on Another World. Judith Light, Sydney Penny, Eric Stoltz, and Lisa Bonet also guest starred on the Show. Denzel won Two Oscars and a Tony Award. It dealt with Breast Cancer, AIDS and Autism way before it became a National Issue. Also, I remember the Actor who played Coolidge on The White Shadow (Also Produced By Bruce Paltrow) mistaking Timothy Van Patten for Salami.
Byron Stewart was Warren Coolidge. He was a crossover to St E. Warren got a basketball scholarship to Boston U but a knee injury ended his career. He wound up an orderly at St Eligius.
In the first season, they also had a suicide, terrorist bombing, full-out gang rumble within the hospital, and sex-change operation, just to name a few subjects.
Loved that show and there’s many guest actors who are huge now.
A definite must-watch on Hulu. I only wish the other five seasons would get a release.

Denzel Washington was the "breakout star" of this incredible ensemble cast. David Morse to me was always the heart of the show's first season. His performance in the first episode really established the authenticity and struggles of being a brand new doctor. A truly selfless occupation.

I loved this show as a kid and faithfully watched each and every episode. I don't know if many people remember that David Birney was billed as the 'star' of the show before it aired. I read in an interview with him that he didn't realize his role wouldn't be as prominent as he thought, due to the ensemble nature of the show. He quit after the first season to star in an ABC fluff show called 'Glitter'. I remember an exquisite scene he had in a bar setting and how gorgeous and heart-breaking the dialogue was. I could never understand why any actor would leave such a rich, character-driven show. I'd rather have a smaller role in a stellar show, than a larger one in something that was just 'meh' (as so much television was back then).
No mention of Ed Flanders, just clips of his excellent acting. This show was groundbreaking in its day! R.I.P. to all the cast members that have gone on to that St. Elsewhere hospital in the sky! 😷❤️👼🏼

Such a phenomenal show and ensemble cast when it wasn't common. And for those who don't know - the things announced over the PA system and characters that were referenced from other Bruce Paltrow shows: Mary Tyler Moore, White Shadow,....made this show more intellectual and funny. In a class by itself. Eric Laneuville deserves recognition amongst a great cast who went on to become incredibly accomplished.
And the episode where a few characters went to Cheers. Really established that show being a spin-off of St Elsewhere

Breakthrough series with unapologetic grit & wit with characters you’d love to hate & broken heroes just doing a job. It had not been matched. Only inspired.
If it hasn't already been noted, there should be a compilation of in-jokes that the show did for several of its regular cast and many of its guest stars. Mark Harmon hailed by Fiskus as "the sexiest man alive" (hat tip/People Magazine). When Matt Frewer, who did Coke commercials, guest-starred on the show, one of the nurses told him to "catch the wave" (the slogan from the commercial) just to name a couple. Favorite scene? When Bruce Greenwood's character Goofy Glued Ronny Cox"s doctor into his office, so he couldn't get out. Then, William Daniels and Ed Begley Jr. interacting every day. Great TV!

There was a template for St. Elsewhere. "Medical Center" which starred James Daly, father of Tyne and Tim, ran on CBS a decade before. But the staff at St. Eligius was great and still brings back found memories. Also, Eric Laneuville was one of the 'kids' in "Room 222."

I have great memories of watching reruns of St. Elsewhere with my mom.
It was that long ago. I was working at a Boston ER and saw most of the shows in repeat. Everyone did such a great job! That same building is on Washington Street in the south end of Boston. One of my friends worked there, but the building was used for detoxing and being clean. Some of it was very real. The feelings of the shows were much the same as watching MASH.

I'm re-watching the first season. Morse had too skinny of a head/face for that much hair....it was very Garfunkle-esque (circa 1970).
I liked Morse on "St. Elsewhere", but his detective character on "House M.D." was played too well for me to where I still don't like watching those scenes whenever I re-watch that series. Mark Harmon played Ted Bundy in a made-for-TV movie if I remember correctly and he also played that real-life persona too well. It probably hurt Harmon in getting some future roles because people saw him and then just thought..."that's Ted Bundy".

I love this show. People wonder why it didn't get better ratings. I've thought maybe it was the kitsch comedy that saw a one-man band parading through the ER, a guy who thought he was a bird taking a flying leap out the window, and black humor in the morgue. These over-the-top camp hijinks were sprinkled throughout, and you were always wondering when they were gonna send in the clowns.
I admit I didn't like the cheesy farce at first, but what can I say...it grew on you. The more serious scenes balanced it out, and the wonderful acting/writing was impeccable. I can't decide who was my favorite character. Either Ed Flanders' Dr. Westphall or Howie Mandel's Dr. Fiscus -- although I have a notion Howie was just playing himself. He's never changed! But they all were GREAT!! A perfect fit. Catch it right now on Hulu.
I found this when I got reminiscent about my favorite! My 8 year old self was so in Luther and Dr. Morrison. I will never forgot Mark Harmon's character contracting AIDS. It was my first time seeing that in a tv show. St. Elsewhere was truly cutting edge.

Sagan Lewis and Jennifer Savidge were both part of the show from the early seasons but they were never listed in the opening credits until the final season. David Birney and G W Bailey were both in the first season but were "Chuck Cunningham-ed" starting with the second season. Cynthia Sykes was "Chucked" in season 3 or 4.
