Red Rum A National Treasure

- In Christmas 1995 BBC Television Sport produced this tribute to the great Rummy, totally unique, there will probably be another like him, not just on the Aintree arena, will there ever be another triple winner? The challenge will certainly never be the same again with fences that did a good impersonation of the North face of the Eiger. Rummy also visited confined TV studios crowded betting shops always 'giving' to his adoring public. A true star. All the players are here Ginger, Brian Fletcher, Tommy Stack, Noel Le Mere snd Billy Ellison all narrated and pulled together by Julian Wilson.
Red Rum the greatest of all time ... he had bad feet and never fell in over 100 races ... he carried 12 stone top weight to win the national in a record time looking as easy as any horse has ever looked in winning ... he will never be surpassed, he is a legend, he is RED RUM
In modifying the course and fences Aintree have preserved his legacy. The race now is a fraction of what it was in Red Rum’s day so even if another horse wins 3 now it won’t hold a candle to Red Rum’s achievements as the race was so much more challenging back then.
Absolutely agree.
100 percent
The one and only our rummy.
When names are written in the depths of history this horse has got to be in there surely
Arkle would now run in the Grand National (and probably win multiple times)... They wouldn't risk the greatest horse of all time (Arkle) on such a hard and dangerous race. Red Rum was the best jumper ever; & the greatest Grand National horse. Will never be beaten, because it is not the same race. Two different, but shining STARS, both of them... ARKLE and RED RUM.
He was special, no horse will ever do what he did, never fell, people forget the fences were bigger then too! I saw him when he was retired at the yard, very very intelligent little horse, much missed❤
Red Rum and Ginger McCain my two favourite human beings loads of love
You know only one of them is a human, right?
I'm glad Red Rum had a long life. He was wonderful. Thank you for this video.
I'm so grateful I was alive at the same time as Red and that I got to see him a few times. He was and always will be a genuine legend.

Quite simply no.a complete one off.
No afraid not
No. He was a wonderful and very beautiful freak of nature and they've now theyve changed the course at Aintree so much it wouldn't matter if one won 3 times its no where near the same as what he achieved. RIP to a true legend.
A beautiful legend, I was 11 when he won 3rd GN and have never forgotten it ❤

Thank you for uploading this. As a Rummy fan it's a very special programme to me. My grandad recorded it for me on VHS when it first aired and every time i went to his house I would watch it. I was only 11 at the time and loved Red Rum. Glad he lived to 30, what a wonderful horse he was.
The commentary is up there with the People on the pitch , Pele what a save , the Mets win the pennant ...Truly majestic....
Thanks for posting. Love this horse.
Thanks for this -had the video for years and always wanted a digital copy
He ran 5 and won 3 and 2nd,twice I mean what a achievement
Great upload, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for uploading
Sobering thought utterly Arkle would have had to concede 35lbs to Red Rum, 17lbs to Desert Orchid and Kauto Star.
But would Arkle have got over those fences?
I went to his grave
Any chance of more royal ascot meetings ?
Preferably from the BBC
