I made a charging station from an IKEA cart!

  • Hello! In this video we get rad and make a battery charging station using a metal Ikea cart known as a RASKOG.
My charging life was a mess. For starters, I'm quite a bit of a "dumper." I dump my jacket on the floor, I dump my photography bags after a job instead of hanging them up, and I dump batteries on the floor. So I decided to convert my unused Ikea cart into a neat charging station.
I drilled two holes for the wires. This was the toughest part as, I don't know if you know this, but metal is hard. I watched a few TH-cam videos first, which made me an instant expert. To prevent the bit from overheating, I used some oil. With some patience, I drilled two one inch holes.
The bottom rack holds: the charger, a Canon battery charger, and all the charging bricks and plugs. The middle rack is my battery storage area. I created a border using gaffer's tape. One side will be my dumping ground for uncharged batteries, the other will hold the charged batteries. I could see someone more organized really rocking this 2nd floor of batteries...but again...dumper here.
Lastly, I used the top level for my most used batteries. Fujifilm, Sony a7iii, a6400, GoPro, Godox flashes, and a wireless phone charger.
Lastly, I recommend watching Wes Perry's video on charging lithium batteries. He had some good advice including NOT burning your house down. This is why I included a power strip with a switch. If I'm not charging, the electricity to the batteries will be turned off.
See that video here: • 5 Godox Battery Rules ...
Lastly, I share these videos to help and inspire someone to create their OWN charging station. This one works for me. Don't be a killjoy and just point out what I SHOULD'VE done. Instead, share some good ideas in the comments for the future charging station builders of the world.
Here are some other charging station videos that inspired me:

Thank you soooo much! I have multiple headphones, cell phones, power tool batteries, keyboards, etc. charging as a big mess in my dining room and haven't been able to find a retail solution. This is awesome, and I can't thank you enough for tidying up my life (and dining room).

If you need to liberate a cord and charger for travel, just snip the cable tie
Still way better than the time-wasting mess at home 😊

Great Idea! Nice work. I like the emphasis on safety too. Forgive me but, if I may suggest, the main supply should be plugged into a GFI outlet, and the holes where the cables pass through, as someone suggested, should be covered with rubber grommets. With a portable station moving around over time, the cable linings may abrade, exposing the wiring to the metal of the cart. Lining the shelves with non conducting, rubber mats will add additional safety or. If you can, use a non metal cart altogehter.

When free travel finally returns and if you use a laptop and velcro your SSD drives and card readers to the back of your laptop, 3M Dual Lock is THE way to go. Heck, if you want to velcro anything, Dual Lock is fantastic.

Great idea, but it's very important to protect the cables that run through the holes you drilled. You can buy rubber grommets sized to the holes, or simply use gaffer tape and cover the sharp edges with a few layers of tape. This will prevent the cables from rubbing against the sharp edge eventually becoming damaged, or worst case shorting out and causing a fire.

I used Velcro to attach my chargers to the wall in our basement. Then two four feet long outlet strips underneath. I can remove the chargers whenever I need to. If you have the dedicated space to do this, I highly recommend it.

Nicely done. A good inexpensive solution to a neverending, always growing problem.
You did however, make a potentially serious mistake. Where you have drilled the holes for the cables to pass through . . . the edges of the holes need to be covered with rubber piping, or perhaps a silicon bead. Whilst you "brushed" it clean, it is still a hard edge which will eventually chaff at the wires.

Great idea from Ikea #DadJoke. Velcro Ties FTW! Tip: when wapping the velcro make sure the soft side is always out. so the velcro doesn't catch on your clothes. Great vid 😀👍

Seeing this gives me so much anxiety wishing that camera manufacturers (and 3rd batteries) would all just use USB-C 😫
    Great video tho, as usual!

And to add insult to injury, I just received a battery-powered light with a USB-C port, but it will only charge with a USB-C to USB-A cable, not with my USB-C to USB-C cable I charge everything else with. Like... come on!
