    Oil contracts when cooled down, meaning that in cold conditions there is smaller volume of oil in the system and the hydraulic system cannot put enough pressure on the remote - hence the slow function. If you bleed it with chilled oil, you make sure there is enough oil in the system in cold conditions.

      @@derrickhenninger3727 the weird part is water only has a tiny part of its temperature where it expands and density goes down, for the most part it behaves like everything else. But that little exception is why freezing doesn't start at the bottom of a pond or lake and instead ice is at the top and water remains liquid below. I've heard it said that this tiny exception with water is one of the reasons life exists in the first place.

    • @keithfurrow5899

      I think you pressurize the dropper in the summer at 25C. Then, when you ride at 0C the air in the dropper contracts. This reduces the pressure to the point where the dropper does not work well. The oil and dirt could get sticky in the cold too. Put a little more air in the dropper .

  • @BigDoink666
    @BigDoink666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Rockshox Reverb has a hydraulic activated Valve and as the fluid contracts in the cold the Valve isn't pushed in far enough to extend the dropperpost at the normal speed but if you bleed it with cold (contracted) fluid it operates as usual in the cold and even faster if it gets warm again

    • @rupedog
      @rupedog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its oil, any contraction in the cold would be negligible.
      Its just cos he did a bleed.
      In fact, the cold if anything, would cause the metal fluid channels to contract, so doing the bleed with the post and remote cold, might allow marginally more fluid in...but its minute.

    • @FomeDH
      @FomeDH 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rupedog No, Hawcon is correct. The oil does contract in the cold, and it also expands when the brakes get hot. There is also a small amount of air and water that gets into the oil and contaminates it. A brake bleed doesn't necessarily get rid of all of those contaminants so there's a certain margin of error there but its small. Air and water also get in through the seals especially near the pistons. Some SRAM brakes even have air reservoirs for air bubbles to be caught in, this is what they teach to their mechanics. Shimano brakes are even more susceptible to it because they use mineral oil vs dot 5.

      #GMBN #GMBNTech So thus bleeding with cold oil introduces a higher volume of oil than is achievable and room temp or higher. I would worry about damaging the post with higher oil volume when it warms up.

    That 3d printed alloy pivot/shock mount is hack of the week. All of the minute measurements and the painstakingly detailed 3d designing required, not to mention that the process typically takes a few attempts and minute design alterations before you have a working product. That took the most work and yielded the most reward compared to the other submissions. I like Martyn’s singing, by the way. Neil, just let it go...man! • @simondaviesphoto
    @simondaviesphoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The dropper is slow firstly because the air or gas that provides the lift will have contracted , as gasses expand in heat and contact in cold and you can add stiff seals to that. As for freezing the oil it makes no sense, oils have an upper and lower temperature rating. One thing to help hydraulic systems in the cold is to use thinner oil.

And then you have to blead the shock. So if you set it up with cold oil from the beginning it will not contract and no air pockets will form

    That suspension part hack is definitely the most engineering intensive one if we look at it from designing and manufacturing aspects. It may look rough finish, but functions as intended.
    About the dropper post not return as fast as it should, my different theory would be the reduce in air pressure inside the air chamber in the dropper due mianly to PV=nRT relationship. As temperature reduced, pressure will also reduce as well (P1/T1 = P2/T2, assuming same number of mole of the gas (air) and volume). Hence, the force exerts on the piston (that takes up our weight) is decreased and with increased viscosity of hydraulic fluid combined, this results in slow return dropoer post. (assuming static friction from seals and moving part are the same, therefore dropper post acceleration is reduced).

      Your statement is true but these specified oils have oil-polymer additives like polyisobutylene etc that gives them non-newtonian charasteristics. According to Bernoulli's we find that mathematically it makes difference if we bled cold but i do not think if the effect was significant in such a small volume inside a brakeset.

      The oil doesn't freeze at -18°c, so it'll contract. I guess the issue is the fixed volume of oil in the hydraulic system shrinks when cold so the lever won't work, so start with the oil at operating temp/volume and it works in the cold. When it warms up in the garage at night the seat shoots up randomly? - probably around 2-3 am I expect...

    When water freezes, it expands. This is why so many pot holes arrive after the winter months; water drains into the cavities within the surface and when frozen the expansion forces out the components beneath the surface - generally the inlaid granite chips within the tarmac, which is the mess you see around a pot hole. NO, I'm not a Roadie just a petrol-head and engineer :)

    When I was at the RockShox service shop in Squamish to get my Reverb serviced, after they stored it in a fridge prior to giving it to me. I always wondered why and if this guy was onto something. My reverb was in because it was not running fast in the cold.

  • @b-mtb4049
    @b-mtb4049 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    By bleeding a dropper post with cold oil, you are setting it up to work in the cold. Water is the only liquid that actually expands when frozen/freezing, however, the reverb oil does not freeze, or expand, it just gets very cold begins to contract under these temperatures. All bike shops will service dropper posts at room temperature, so when the fluid gets cold in the winter, it’ll contract and the dropper will not work as well due to negative pressure in the dropper post. If you service it while the reverb oil is very cold it will not be able to contract any further when riding in the cold, therefore solving the issue of cold oil causing a dropper not to work.

    So this is just my opinion on the Rockshox reverb. I have a lot of experience with hydraulic systems. The first thing to understand in hydraulics and how they work is a liquid cannot be compressed meaning unless you have a leak there will always be the same volume of liquid in the system. Water freezes oil does not. When oil gets cold the viscosity changes and becomes more viscous (thicker). I would hazard to guess that there was air in the system and should not matter at what temperature you bleed it at. However the more you use the dropper in the cold the oil will heat up slightly due to friction in the system changing the viscosity (thinner oil) and improve the performance of the system.

  • @joed899
    @joed899 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    my guess for the dropper post is the fact he did a bleed was the main reason. if there's air there's moisture that freezes and expands possibly restricting flow or sticking components.
    I only rule out the oil as I believe the oil is a straight weight oil meaning the viscosity shouldn't change under temperature conditions. But if the new oil has a lighter weight it will flow better in cold conditions.

    Hydraulic fluid contracts in the cold. This means when the lever is pushed the fluid doesn't move as far or as fast. Bleeding it when cold will mean when you fill up the hydraulic fluid it will be full at cold temperatures. Therefore when you push it in the cold the chambers and cables will be as full as usual and everything will operate as it would if set up and used at warmer temperatures.

    Water responds the opposite way to most liquids with temperature. It's one of the convenient mysteries of life on earth...it expands when it's cold. Other liquids, such as mineral oil, retract when cold and becomes more dense. Setting the dropper up properly with freezing oil sets the pressure up to work when it is freezing cold. It probably comes up more quickly under normal conditions, but works when it's at that base temperature.

    At lower temps things contract, fluids too (only water expands upon freezing) this inside brakes effectively creates a negative atmosphere pressure and brakes can completely cease working as the internal pressure on braking may still be lower than atmospheric pressure and that is keeping the cylinders in that and the small air bubbles that are never 100% out unless you vacuum bleed can expand at the decreased inner pressure making it like you never bled the brakes in the first place.
    I did not encounter that as I usually stop riding at -3C

    • @rupedog
      @rupedog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect....u think u cant drive a car in winter cos the brakes dont work! No.
      Hydraulic DOT fluid is very temp stable. And reverb fluid is not DOT fluid, but just low viscosity oil.
      The cold with increase its viscosity, but it wont contract to any appreciable amount. Go freeze a bottle of it, and see.

    the oil inside the pipe contracts, therefore in effect making the 'cable stretch' in other terms. It creates an effect that the cable would only be pulling the release clip halfway, as there is physically less oil withing the pie so it can't push the actuation switch open on the dropp as far as it would if the oil was at normal temperature. Bleeding it while the oil is contracted in effect forces more oil into the pipe to start with, meaning that when the temps drop there will be the correct amount of oil withing the pipe
    hope that helped

    Water expand when gets solid. I really wouldn't know if it's works because I live in a warm weather. (Barranquilla, Colombia) but if it's a oil base fluid it will work because at lower temperatures oils increase the viscosity. And lowerd the density. So if you put it cold you will copy the external conditions. Sorry if I made any grammar mistakes english is not my first language.

    Shock mount? He could easily sand that down and polish it before painting or powdercoat, or leave it raw. Hack because it fits to very specific measurements, but just needs some literal polish to look acceptable for the non-fabricators.
    My first thought about the oil in freezer is to prevent it from attracting moisture as it's poured into the system, assuming his garage is freezing cold. That could slow down the valving and flow if there's FROST inside the lines. Otherwise, it's because mineral oil, like most other fluids, compress as they get cold so the system is 'low' once he's out in the freezing cold wild vs in the warm garage.

    • @MotoErgoSum
      @MotoErgoSum 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FYI, 24 °F or −4 °C for mineral oil. If he's riding in -5 °C it's slow because the mineral oil is actually freezing in the lines and he's got a false positive because using the cold oil only seemed to work in -3° C weather...

    I changed my roxshocks fork oil to redline equivalent as the original is super stiff when the temperature gets below zero and the fork transforms into a pogostick. The oil change made it back to normal. I think one could change the fluid in a reverb to a very thin fork oil, like redline likewater, or brake mineral oil that is more stable in different conditions. After all it's just a hydraulic fluid that moves a button on the other end.
    For the rattling cables: I wonder if you could grease your cable housings and then fill the frame with expanding foam. Then you could pull them free and you would have nice snug tunnels inside the frame for the cables 😅 I'm sure this wouldn't work in real life though 🙄

      Theoretically, if you bleed in cold fluid, it’ll expand slightly when warm and create more static pressure in the system causing any air bubbles to compress. Realistically, it’ll cause rubbing on the rotor if your brakes don’t have all the high end adjustments (reach in, pad in, etc). Maybe dropping the viscosity reduces mess and air bubbles???

    • @mattgies

      Yes! Glad I'm not the only one who wondered why they spent hours or days making a custom part rather than spending a few seconds giving the shock a twist. Plus, the shock now moves on an axis the frame manufacturer never intended, and doesn't move on an axis that they did intend. Seems like a huge folly of a project.

    Fluid, as a lever, is susceptible to cold. If you bleed the reverb hose with warm (expanded) fluid, then go to a cold area, the fluid contracts and won't have enough push to activate the post. Check this video out from Butter Suspension : th-cam.com/video/SIYd1hz87Hw/w-d-xo.html
