So literally within the first 30 seconds of this review we're talking about someone vomiting red slushie into a children's urinal. I got a good feeling about this one.
I personally loved this movie. I can't believe this is a wide release Hollywood movie. It's one of the most ambitious wide release movies I've seen in several years
I see the film as a callback to the Hammer films like Curse of Dracula. Faded colors, exquisite sets, generic protagonist, and over the top villain. That's why I loved it so much.
Gore Verbinski didn't get to make that Bioshock movie, so he took ideas from that script and made this. It's a bit like how Guillermo del Toro couldn't get his Haunted Mansion movie done yet, so he put out Crimson Peak in the meanwhile.
Funny you say that. When I watched the trailer for A Cure for Wellness, I thought of how its visuals were probably recycled from the ill-fated Bioshock movie adaptation.
SonofMrPeanut You know, I forgot that was ever going to be a thing. I gotta say I would love to see them do those properties after seeing both of these movies.
MissNotSoCool 96 Really? Because the internet is exactly where I heard about it. And I just saw it and it's good. Artsy but not too Artsy. And the trailer has been in front of big movies.
Haha, I remember Shutter Island coming out when I was in high school, and I thought the trailer gave away the twist. But some kid was like "Whoa, Shutter Island was so surprising!" When I said I thought it was obvious, he said, "No, you won't expect the ending! At all!" Kid betrayed me. Now as I learned with the TH-cam comments of this new movie's trailer, Shutter Island has apparently become the prime example of "crazy all along" stories. Who knew? But lulz, Brian's specific recommendation hit me hard. I'm working in cinematography.
The Bioshock comparisons make sense. Verbinski was attached to direct a Bioshock movie but the studio balked over the budget and his insistence that it be rated R. This may well be his way of using ideas he had for that project with his own IP.
Yeah, most studios are terrified of taking the risk of putting out a video game adaptation that's R-rated, even with the success of the Resident Evil series. (As sub-par as it is, it still is a successful franchise.) The studio wanted it PG-13 because it's easier to sell to a broader audience, but of course, it's Bioshock, and a PG-13 Bioshock would be absolutely terrible...
That...a good question honestly, what the hell is that? We're in the movie theater parking lot. I think that may just be a reflection from something in the car.
It is actually quite interesting that you mention how this movie is similiar to Bioshock. Four years ago Verbinsky was suppose to direct Bioshock the movie, but scrapped the project due to high production cost. In an interview a week ago, he said that he reiterated A LOT of ideas and concepts from Bioshock in this movie and created it instead of Bioshock because it costed like 1/4 of what Bioshock was suppose to cost. This eel in the stomach thing? Think about ADAM slugs in little sisters.
No, guys, the characters are totally 200 years old. And yes, the eel juice keeps them alive, that's one of the (many) twists: The treatment kills the spa guests/patients, but it creates immortality elixir for the doctors.
I went to see it last night and I absolutely loved it. It's atmospheric, different, creative, visually excellent and very well acted. It's going to be one of the year's most underrated films.
I feel like this is going to turn out to be one of those movies that is initially critically panned, but grows into a cult classic over the times, and eventually gets a sort of critical evaluation. I dunno.
WolverinesNation92 me either. the fact that Verbinski got that kind of money to make a movie this depraved movie and original is amazing. THAT'S why everyone needs to see this film. Because this is the most original horror film in years.
OK. I kind of had to stop partway through because they got into spoiler territory, and based on what they were saying, it sounds like they were taking the piss out of it.
That's exactly what I thought this would be! I was ready for some rage. Instead now I know not to ever be in the same room with this other horror movie.
I thought it was maybe the opposite, like The Cure for "Wellness", because "wellness" is a term sometimes used by people selling quack stuff, i.e. their produce "promotes wellness", so this would be a movie about refuting that.
TheGirlWithTheMonsterMovieTattoos Goddamnit! Now I might have to see this film just to see what they're talking about! Says the person who HATES body-horror movies!
I love Stoned Gremlin Productions and I usually agree with most of their reviews.... But Im gonna have to disagree on most of your gripes with this one. I'm really not getting all the hate behind this film.... A lot of the gripes that these reviewers are having is that "The plot doesent make sense" or the violence is "gratuitous" which is honestly false... I agree that the character decisions that are made throughout the film are questionable and dont make a lot of sense, the plot itself does make sense if you just think about it... PEOPLE NEED TO GO SEE THIS FILM! its an original big budget Hollywood produced film, and the reason why Hollywood doesent take chances with films like this is because critics and audiences end up shitting all over it and it probably wont make its money back.. Its a very uniquely original film, that may have some writing flaws in terms of how it decides to propel its story along, But it was an incredible original experience and is absolutely NOTHING like shutter island. There is SOOO much more to appreciate about film than just plot itself anyway... IF anybody wants to see a film review for A Cure For Wellness from a more objective and fairer perspective, PLEASE check out the film review on my channel. If you dont like it give it a thumbs down. But if you DO like it, please like it, Subscribe and SHARE THE LOVE! Thanks
A movie isn't good simply because it does things other Hollywood movies don't. I could say the same thing about Fifty Shades Darker, and that most certainly isn't a good movie. Also, I had no problem with the violence being "gratuitous" and I never said or implied that I did (do you even watch my other shows or reviews lol) and we never said we hated the film either, we both said it was worth a rental.
When i mentioned the "gratuitous violence" point, that wasnt in direct reference to you guys. that was kind of an attack on the general consensus that I've been seeing most reviewers say about the film.I guess i should have made that a little more clear. I actually know that the violent parts were actually some of yalls favorite parts of the film. And i know that just because Hollywood does something different doesent make it good. That wasnt really my argument and i apologize if thats how my argument came off.. What i was really trying to say is its creativity, originality, and graphic nature of this hollywood production is something to be sincerely appreciated in this age of constant rehashes and safe PG-13 productions that are specifically designed to generate mountains of box office revenue... again my biggest gripe is the fact that most reviewers are saying that the plot makes NO sense which is just untrue in my opinion... the only thing that doesent really make sense are some of the decisions made by Lockheart and how the film chose to propel its story along... but as far as the films concept itself, I think makes a great amount of sense and was extremely unique and intriguing... I think its worth seeing in a theatre... Its such an experience with surround sound with its superb sound design and a large screen to showcase its gorgeous cinematography
I didn't think this film was too bad. it's certainly not amazing but I didn't think it was too incoherent, just a little too long and predictable. the visuals were wonderful though.
This exactly. I've just finished watching this after having to miss it in cinemas due to lack of £££, and I quite liked it, although I did kind of know what to expect going in. I suppose that helps.
So I fell asleep to this last night and somehow hit the play button and woke up to Brad and Brian talking and was really confused but not scared as to why they came to the East Coast, broke into my room and began reviewing a movie at midnight. Then I realized it was my laptop.
A family of of 5 left the theater on that final sequence when things got a little too sleazy for their taste I assume. I think that alone was worth the price of entry for me.
If you liked Jason Isaacs in this movie, he played a similar character in the Netflix series The OA that is equally weird but has a great payoff at the end.
Gore Verbinski was set to direct a Bioshock film before that project was dropped, after some sets were already made, so the Bioshock comparison is pretty spot on considering there's a reasonable chance they used set pieces from that project.
Fox: I dont think i saw another comment answering but the picture with the invis man said it was Taken in 1912, so yeah the Baron and daughter are over 100 years old
I really liked this film despite it's flaws, I'd go as far to say it's one of my favourite films of this year so far and I can see it becoming a cult classic at some point :)
I just wanted the escape from the dentist chair explained. Beyond that I thought the whole tone changed abruptly in the end, like some studio exec said, too weird and long, let's wrap it up, no one will notice the missing scenes.
the castle is in germany more specificall at Hechingen in Baden Württemberg. It belongs to the Prince of Preußen, the heritage of of the German Kaiser Wilhelm the second
Shannon Ongley Gore Verbinski was signed up for a Bioshock movie, but it was canceled because the Studio wouldn't fork over the money nor agree to an R rating.
As I understand, Rock Dog was made with a Chinese audience in mind, and not actually North American/European market. It's based on a (cruddy-looking) Chinese comic.
8:07 Wouldn't it be great if you could have both movies recast and put Jason Isaacs and Anthony Hopkins in the other movie with no changes to the performance?
I went into this almost completely blind, just going off of one teaser I had seen. So I did end up liking it but I am more than open to hearing the criticisms of it.
I saw this movie and really like it. Yes, it has familiar elements, but it's all done well. Edit: I think this would be a good Adventure game. Centralized location, situations that require crafty solutions, a mystery, lots of exploration, and narrative driven.
I remember seeing this review come out, but I never got around to watching it, since y'all do so many of these Midnight Screenings episodes...but I saw this movie earlier today, and I had to watch this one, lol. I thought it was an okay movie. Nothing spectacular, but I've found that we share a lot of the same gripes about it.
it was at least inspired by a book - The Magic Mountain. which had interested me in seeing it, but . . . I'll take your advice and wait for the rental. sounds like not-my-kind-of-squick.
Jake90 Gore Verbinski at least has some semblance of ambition when it comes to story. Tarsem Singh basically just throws shit at the screen while screaming, "Symbolism!".
This movie has way too much body horror for me. Sounds really cool, but I'd definitely be too grossed out to enjoy it. But it would make for a great horror game, and one with multiple endings no less, since the movie seemed to have multiple ending points.
Paused the review and quickly went to read 'Beware of Dog' by Roald Dahl before continuing because I didn't want that spoiled. LOL! That aside, glad I know not to see the movie now, though. And I have new short story for students - bonus! If you haven't read them yet I'd like to recommend 'The Landlady' and 'Lamb to the Slaughter' by Dahl.
To the point where they were talking about it being like a video game, I didn't see it but the description sounds a lot like Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower.
I actually liked this movie. Sure, the story is a bit... messy (?), but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And it looks gorgeous. If you liked this movie, you should read the book which it is loosely based on, The magic mountain by Thomas Mann.
The doctor was over 200 years old. The eel juice kept him and his daughter alive for all those years. The patients weren't that old. They were normal, but they were asll being drugged to keep them happy and wanting to be there, while he experimented on them, and used their bodies to create magic eel juice.
I watched this film a day after it was released in theatres having high hopes for its content after catching a few of the trailers. It wasn't as great as I expected it to be. The cinematography was fantastic every shot of the way but by the end of the two hours the plot seemed very thick and twisted around itself, leading up to what I felt to be a very underwhelming ending. A large part of the beginning of the movie felt very flat trying to build up tension for the big reveal but it did so that the last thirty minutes felt out of place with the addition of gore and 'zombie states' when the rest of the plot beforehand had very little of those two aspects. In the end I am still left mystified as to how the eels grew in the bodies of the people and simply did not eat through their organs when it was shown they are in fact capable of doing so feeding on corpses. Or how puberty was brought on by Hannah simply submerging the lower half of her body in water.
I actually did go to a 10:15 pm showing, we got out around 1:30 am, and there was vomit in the women's room, afterward. Good God that was an awful experience! "Echoes of The Shining," my ass!!
OOH, you know what pissed me off? When Isaacs throws the main character from above into the stairs, and he falls on his back. Next scene he's walking just fine. AT BEST he would be crawling in the grass in pain. AT WORST, he gets paralized
I can only think of SpongeBob literally any time I hear the word "eels." I still want to see this! From the trailer, I had a feeling it was going to be one of those "style over substance" movies. But I love horror and it does indeed look beautiful. Oh and I really want to see Jason Isaacs in more things. Especially as a villain, he was amazing in The OA. Do you have an opinion on that show? Just saw the Neon Demon, wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for your guys. Still reeling from it. It's one of those infuriating movies that makes me flip flop between being pissed off at it and getting excited about the brilliant bits.
why isnt anyone talking about the deer? cause everything that happened only happened because some random deer got hit, or am i suppose to believe the doctor dude has magic deer powers too
This movie was almost better than Shutter Island for the first two thirds, then for some reason, in the final act, it just face-planted. That said, in the places where this movie is good, it is REALLY good. I'd almost recommend seeing it for that reason alone. Just be prepared to shout "Really? REALLY??" at the screen a couple of times.
Maybe the cinematography is good in this, but everything in the commercials looks like the entire movie has that typical teal/green tint most horror movies "have to have". I know Verbinski did this with THE RING as well, and I didn't like it then either.
Guys can you please say if you liked the movie or not before talking about what happens in movies? I really don't like getting spoiled so much so that I don't even watch trailers so I'd appreciate it if you gave a brief opininon on what you think before talking about the movie. Other than that great job as always!
I'm not even into horror films and it feels like I dodged a bullet by seeing Hidden Figures (and actually learning some stuff as a result - thus a good time, IMHO.), instead.
The way Brad laughs in these always makes me think he poisoned the other person and is waiting for the symptoms to show.
lol
Sabbat-X omg best comment ever LOL
It will never sound the same now ...
Brad should play The Man In Black in the inevitable Dark Tower television series.
So literally within the first 30 seconds of this review we're talking about someone vomiting red slushie into a children's urinal.
I got a good feeling about this one.
The Bye-Bye Man's opening story about the crazy audience was another good one.
A Curee for Weeellness moooovieeee heeere => twitter.com/49aa31eb4f0fb9cae/status/831699896834985984
I personally loved this movie. I can't believe this is a wide release Hollywood movie. It's one of the most ambitious wide release movies I've seen in several years
I think he means ambitious in terms of subject matter, and level of detail in the making of it.
ChromiumCheetah As far as Horror/Thriller movies, I'd say it is pretty damn ambitious.
I see the film as a callback to the Hammer films like Curse of Dracula.
Faded colors, exquisite sets, generic protagonist, and over the top villain.
That's why I loved it so much.
Yep
Loved it.

SonofMrPeanut You know, I forgot that was ever going to be a thing. I gotta say I would love to see them do those properties after seeing both of these movies.
Just hearing there's a lot of Bioshock visuals and ideas in here makes me want to see it on that fact alone.
Ya don't see movies like this given wide release, thank you Gore Verbinski. That was an amazing experience, laughter and oh damn moments galore.
JosephDiEgidio I can't agree more. I thought it was fantastic.
Ooooh, it's been a while since we got a mega-review like this. Excited.
An almost 1 hour review of a movie I never heard about.....(Grabs popcorn)
MissNotSoCool 96 how postmodern of you
MissNotSoCool 96 TH-cam knows that I will never see a movie like this, so I got the trailer a lot.
Another piece of evidence that TH-cam is controlled by sadistic cats.
I too never heard of it. But I replaced my TV with the internet 3 years ago so I don't hear about a lot of things.
It's better this way.
But some kid was like "Whoa, Shutter Island was so surprising!" Cherrie Getison i'm not a cinematographer but i'm a photographer and lemme tell you this movie is beautiful like goddamn Dude
i am six minutes into this review and i have already decided to watch this movie. you guys made it sound batshit and i'm excited.
I did the same with their Jupiter Ascending review and I did not regret. I kinda love that movie still....
When it's almost an hour long, you know it's gonna be good...
The Bioshock comparisons make sense. Verbinski was attached to direct a Bioshock movie but the studio balked over the budget and his insistence that it be rated R. This may well be his way of using ideas he had for that project with his own IP.
Bioshock would make a much better film than this film was.
Wait, they had issues with it being "R"?
Yeah, most studios are terrified of taking the risk of putting out a video game adaptation that's R-rated, even with the success of the Resident Evil series. (As sub-par as it is, it still is a successful franchise.)
The studio wanted it PG-13 because it's easier to sell to a broader audience, but of course, it's Bioshock, and a PG-13 Bioshock would be absolutely terrible...
Bloodied Fox did...... did they not look at anything Bioshock, ever???
Is that a building or a bookshelf behind y'all? I love the idea of reviewers chopping up a car and moving it inside just to do a review...
That...a good question honestly, what the hell is that? We're in the movie theater parking lot. I think that may just be a reflection from something in the car.
review Dario Argentos' Phantom of the Opera as the Cinema Snob!
Looks kinda like a billboard maybe?
It is actually quite interesting that you mention how this movie is similiar to Bioshock. Four years ago Verbinsky was suppose to direct Bioshock the movie, but scrapped the project due to high production cost. The way the main character finds info and everything..... thus sounds like a really cool video game.
No, guys, the characters are totally 200 years old. And yes, the eel juice keeps them alive, that's one of the (many) twists: The treatment kills the spa guests/patients, but it creates immortality elixir for the doctors.
Paused the video to leave this comment, didn't ya? :)
I had to write it out to make sure I really understood it.
...turns out I didn't.
Fuck it, I like the movie anyway.
I went to see it last night and I absolutely loved it. It's atmospheric, different, creative, visually excellent and very well acted. It's going to be one of the year's most underrated films.
Agreed.
I've actually visited the castle that they used in the film, its in Stuttgart Germany, lovely place
I've been avoiding this video all weekend... (till I had a chance to watch the actual movie)... I just got back and I loved the film.
With how you're dressed Brad, it doesn't surprise me that you're aware of the location of all nearby garbage cans.
He choose weird stat bonuses. Garbage can locating only becomes important in Level 4.
I feel like this is going to turn out to be one of those movies that is initially critically panned, but grows into a cult classic over the times, and eventually gets a sort of critical evaluation. I dunno.
Das Kinophile ENTP i get the same vibe. i personally liked it but i'm a sucker for vibe heavy and beautifully stylized movies
Das Kinophile ENTP It isn't being panned, though, is it?
*looks at RT score*
WOW, this is better than that.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Suspenseful and engaging the whole way
As a West Virginian I can confirm the service would be shit and our mountains are no where near as big as the alps
The flick also reminded me of Dagon.
Speaking about Mr.Robot, Dane DeHaan could've played Tyrell in Mr.Robot.
Dammit! I wanted this to be good. It's got Jason Isaacs in it.
It's fantastic. Not a movie for everyone, but it's fantastic.
Those Horror Pals I agree. I thought it was excellent. I can't believe it's a wide release Hollywood movie.

Those Horror Pals 100%!
I knew nothing about this movie. From the title alone, I thought it was another anti-vaccine documentary.
An Evening with Ebola When I first saw the trailer I thought it was for a horror tv show.
Man, it took me days to get out of West Virginia so I could reach some WiFi and give you props for that zinger.
So to summarize: A Cure for Wellness sounds like a great Snob review.
Only 5 min the review but I said the same thing about it having a Phantom Of the Opera feel.
TheGirlWithTheMonsterMovieTattoos
Goddamnit! Now I might have to see this film just to see what they're talking about! Says the person who HATES body-horror movies!
Rent it. The visuals are great but the story is eh.

Beware of dog was written in French, not German. He was in occupied France in the Roald Dahl short story.

This may seem random but do you guys have a review up for Movie 43?

Gore Verbinski tried and failed to make a bioshock film. that's where the feelings of this being bioshock come from
James Foster Yeah. The studio wouldn't have it.
8:07 Wouldn't it be great if you could have both movies recast and put Jason Isaacs and Anthony Hopkins in the other movie with no changes to the performance?

Jake90 Gore Verbinski at least has some semblance of ambition when it comes to story. Tarsem Singh basically just throws shit at the screen while screaming, "Symbolism!".
"Ask me what it means! Ask me what it means!"
flmbyz "What dat mean?? What that mean that i just did that???"
This movie has way too much body horror for me. Sounds really cool, but I'd definitely be too grossed out to enjoy it.
But it would make for a great horror game, and one with multiple endings no less, since the movie seemed to have multiple ending points.
Grace Kelley It doesn't have too much of either.
for the love of gawd .....can we do a Kickstarter just to get Letty to be in the review...... pleaseeeeee. lol
lol my roommate only knew the title and thought it would be another Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The only part that really bothered me plot-wise was the whole death of his mother thing. Otherwise I thought the movie was really great.
I freaking love Brad's clothing in his vids
Paused the review and quickly went to read 'Beware of Dog' by Roald Dahl before continuing because I didn't want that spoiled. LOL! That aside, glad I know not to see the movie now, though. And I have new short story for students - bonus! If you haven't read them yet I'd like to recommend 'The Landlady' and 'Lamb to the Slaughter' by Dahl.
To the point where they were talking about it being like a video game, I didn't see it but the description sounds a lot like Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower.
As soon as I heard Coppola's Dracula and Phantom of the Opera I was instantly sold on this movie gonna wait till it gets on Netflix to watch it.
*Eels up inside ya finding entrance where they can* Them talking about eels going inside people just reminded of that song. XD
GREAT HAT!!! no seirously i like it its cute it looks great on you with that coat :)
I actually liked this movie. Sure, the story is a bit... messy (?), but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And it looks gorgeous. If you liked this movie, you should read the book which it is loosely based on, The magic mountain by Thomas Mann.
I went to this thinking it was the sequel to "The Road to Wellville". Very different tone.
The doctor was over 200 years old. The eel juice kept him and his daughter alive for all those years. The patients weren't that old. They were normal, but they were asll being drugged to keep them happy and wanting to be there, while he experimented on them, and used their bodies to create magic eel juice.
How do y'all feel about people comparing this to The Shining? I don't see it but I might be missing something.
Hey Brad have you thought about doing an episode where you read really bad fanfiction about yourself?
Is it better than Split?
Propane Kid No, but it is fine.
So it's about on par with Prometheus? That's the vibe I'm getting from this review.
Prometheus is much better.
It's one of those infuriating movies that makes me flip flop between being pissed off at it and getting excited about the brilliant bits.
saw the trailer; I can only imagine. and 2 HOURS?!?
Toni Gru And a half. Dude, Gore Verbinski loves himself some 140+ minutes movies.
Brad I gotta say every review should just be you Dave, and Tim Bradstreet.
24:26 Take that!
Bet you guys appreciating the Devil Inside's ending way more after this, cause that atleast had the decency to cut off
No, this ending is still better because it at least has an ending, and I can appreciate how batshit silly it got.
Fair point, Brad
why isnt anyone talking about the deer? cause everything that happened only happened because some random deer got hit, or am i suppose to believe the doctor dude has magic deer powers too
Biggest problems with this movie:
The Length
The Multiple fake Endings
The Ending
This movie was almost better than Shutter Island for the first two thirds, then for some reason, in the final act, it just face-planted. That said, in the places where this movie is good, it is REALLY good. I'd almost recommend seeing it for that reason alone. Just be prepared to shout "Really? REALLY??" at the screen a couple of times.
benmcfee I've seen enough crazy stories to not shout that anymore.
the baker family goes there for vacation!
Maybe the cinematography is good in this, but everything in the commercials looks like the entire movie has that typical teal/green tint most horror movies "have to have". I know Verbinski did this with THE RING as well, and I didn't like it then either.
Monroville the color grading varies depending on the vibe and its all pretty appropriately colored
Faith Chitwood Yeah.
Also, even blue can be chilling in the right scenes and not overused.
Amnesia the movie?
I've broken my femur before. If he had just broken it and got a cast, he'd still be in pain. For the first few weeks I had at least an ache.
Guys can you please say if you liked the movie or not before talking about what happens in movies? I really don't like getting spoiled so much so that I don't even watch trailers so I'd appreciate it if you gave a brief opininon on what you think before talking about the movie. Other than that great job as always!
Once again, Jason Isaacs proves just how AWESOME he is!!!!! & Mia Goth is really hot, & really talented.
I'm not even into horror films and it feels like I dodged a bullet by seeing Hidden Figures (and actually learning some stuff as a result - thus a good time, IMHO.), instead.
