Who doesn't remember coming home from school watching Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, YuYu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, & Ronin Warriors on Toonami? Good Times!😌
All these entries are literally the most popular animes of the 90's. And all of them are completely original and didn't need brand recognition or appeal to be successful.

TOEI Animation’s 2nd uncut DB anime known as ‘Dragon Ball Z’ originally came out in the last week of April 1989 and then ended in the last week of January 1996.
Saint Seiya: knights of the zodiac should be on this list even as honorable mention. Although it was made in the 80s, most of us in the west only learned of it in the 90s.
Unfortunately these filthy casuls don't even have the slightest clue about one of the greatest animes of all time. They think modern garbage like my hero academia and attack on titan are the greatest anime ever.
Detective Conan is so underrated in the west, oh my GOD... and i dont get that, it's like Law & Order meets Anime with a twist, who doesnt like a good crime drama??
Oh my gosh YES some actual recognition for Detective Conan!!! I caught the series during its brief time airing in the US as Case Closed and my lifelong love of mysteries is all because of that one show. I still follow it loyally all these years later.

Girly or not I really like watching Sailor Moon. Who else gets emotional on Pokémon season 1 scene when Ash gets trapped in a snowy cave with Charmandar, Pikachu, Balbasaur, Squirtal. Most lovely bonding scene between Ash and his Pokémons, that I still remember till date.

Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Rayearth Knights and several others were a large part of my childhood growing up in Mexico up until I moved to the states. The first two were really popular there too. Hell I remember going to an actual play based on the Sanctuary Saga of Saint Seiya.
Detective Conan/Case Closed was what got me into anime. I remember staying up just to watch it back when it was on Toonami and getting scared by the early episodes. But I couldn't turn away. It's my favorite anime all time, but it's one I can't really recommend to people.

I've actually started watching *_"Sailor Moon"_* again because I haven't watched it since it aired on TV back then... For the most part, I think it has aged pretty well. Sailor Mars was always my favorite scout.
Rurouni Kenshin's Trust and Betrayal OVA is one of the best arcs ever put to (shounen) anime. I watched it quite recently earlier this year and I was actually impressed by how complex they made the characters in such a short and concise 4-episode story that is basically movie length. I think a lot of the love the show receives comes from that too ^^
I was born in the '90s 1997 but grew up in the early 2000s I've watched all of these animes and I still watch them to this day they are some of my favorites from my childhood especially sailor Moon and dragon Ball z franchise and detective Conan also known as Case closed here in the US

DBZ is still my favorite anime shows of all time! We just had our Arkansas Comicon last week and we had the the actors of DBZ Sean and Chris a.k.a Goku and Vegeta here and that was a the best time of my life.

After my recent rewatch, I'm glad to agree that DBZ deserves the top spot! Its got more story than some folks like to suggest, and growing up with Goku as a role model made me a more positive person. Gotta love the earlier anime for its emphasis on friendship, love, and never giving up :]
Digimon is the only anime that has truly grown up with the audience. And that has made me love it even more. The Tri movies (while flawed a little) were great. And Last Evolution broke my heart. The reboot has been incredibly rough, storywise but still has had some moments that made me feel the nostalgia.
Not including One Piece was a solid move. With only a couple of months in 1999, it would be a top contender against anime that concluded or started a year or more in advance.

I remember catching a sizable chunk of the Cowboy Bebop movie one time at my uncle's house; my brother, who was also there, described it as "the wierdest episode of Firefly". It reminded me what anime can do.
Sailor moon should have been higher, it single handily introduced the magical girl genre. It’s still extremely popular here and Japan. Watch mojo y’all stay doing my girl dirty

After my recent rewatch, I'm glad to agree that DBZ deserves the top spot! Its got more story than some folks like to suggest, and growing up with Goku as a role model made me a more positive person. Gotta love the earlier anime for its emphasis on friendship, love, and never giving up :]
I about got real upset that Yugioh wasn't in this list, then I realized the anime series started in 2000. Just short of being in the 90's.
even then i'm sorry it wouldnt make the list, Yu-Gi-Oh! was cool for a minute, then they started changing the cast and i lost interest.
Digimon is the only anime that has truly grown up with the audience. And that has made me love it even more. The Tri movies (while flawed a little) were great. And Last Evolution broke my heart. The reboot has been incredibly rough, storywise but still has had some moments that made me feel the nostalgia.
Not including One Piece was a solid move. With only a couple of months in 1999, it would be a top contender against anime that concluded or started a year or more in advance.
Tenchi Muyo series was also a hit back in the 90's Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo

yall better not underestimated detective conan it have some good @ss main story line , it literally have one of the best selling manga and movies in japan (just fyi it outsold Endgame movie sales in Japan by their Fist of Blue Sapphire movie in 2019) and in japan it literally have a whole city, airport, train, museum, etc. dedicated to detective conan only

@@YakkoWarnerTower I strongly recommend them! The two newest ones are on Netflix. If you haven’t seen any of them, you can watch “the beginning”. It’s somewhat of a prequel to all the other movies.

You wanna know how popular Detective Conan is in japan. the detective conan movie 23 release become top chart sales movie of the week in japan for few weeks becoming the only country that didn't have Avengers Endgame as the top sale of the week during its release in Japan. Japanese prefer to watch Detective Conan movie over Avengers Endgame as they are both released just week apart.
