    This is actually a dual role ... EA and PA. I think it's really important for people to understand there is a significant difference between the two. Very few true EAs would be OK with managing dirty laundry, doing housekeeping or getting cars cleaned. If an employer is looking for personal care they need to be very clear about that and the role should be clearly defined as a Personal Assistant (PA) with Executive Assistant (EA) responsibilities.

      I 100% agree. Over the years we’ve learned a lot together and created more definition for the EA role. I’d never had Jen do any things like laundry or cleaning my car, but over the years she did help me with lots of things that branched over into my personal life (scheduling haircuts, ensuring I have lunches some days at the office, etc).
      Like you said It definitely is important to be really clear on expectations ahead of time

    As a seasoned Executive Assistant 20+ years, this was an amazing conversation. Kudos to both Trevor and Jenn for being so candid. I've been through similar struggles
    It all comes down to good communication!

    Great content! I recently inherited an EA position and feel WAY out of my league. This video eased a few of my concerns. The relationship between an EA and their executive(s) evolves over time through clear communication, questions and observing.

      Yes Beth, communication is huge. Things can get hard when you’re working that closely together if communication isn’t there.

    So glad you did this interview. I was (unexpectedly) offered a similar role at a local startup and ... I'm just really glad to see this. 👍🏾 I don't think the role will work out as well for me long-term as it obviously has for Jenn, but videos like this help.

    This seems to be a description of a Personal Assistant vs an Executive Asst. Any clarification between the two roles?

    • @GetCarrot
      @GetCarrot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Funny I just had this conversation with a carrot customer today! So honestly the lines between various types of assistant roles have changed so much over the last 10-20 years that there is generally a lot of overlap between them. Most EAs do some personal items. I would say I likely do about 10% “personal” things for Trevor anymore, Where most PAs focus on solely personal items, but might occasionally help with business needs; maybe bank runs or things like that. My main focus is more on Carrot or his other businesses but I still do other personal things for him. For instance, I'm currently working on getting their garage door replaced. Really where that comes in though is through the clarifying conversation around the needs of the exec going into the role at the start of the relationship. If you aren't ok with doing personal things and they are needed in the role, the role might not be the right fit. We made it clear upfront from the start what I was willing to do and not do. And those lines have changed over the years - we've drawn boundaries as my workload changed but we are clear where needs are and everything. I hope that helps add some clarity and answers your question! Thanks for watching and questioning! - Jen

    Hiring my first EA this month - listened through this video twice & took 3 pages of notes! No joke! So many other videos on hiring assistants for REI speak on how to onboard VAs. This is the first I've found that actually addresses hiring an EA that will grow and evolve with you. Incredibly helpful content - thanks, guys!
