Great material to review when going to do field work under these conditions. I like the practical breakdown such as remarks pertaining to things like needing either more gear or extra people. The video does emphasize what to do in either conditions with or without extra gear. What I like is the truth telling about shooting on location - very unglamorous. Also demonstrates no matter how good an iphone shot can be, the laws of physics will prevail. That is, there is no easy "App" on the phone to diffuse harsh sunlight.

At the end of last year's summer I bought a 15 foot beach umbrella that I mounted to a grocery cart (that I use to haul my lighting gear in outdoor shoots). In direct sun, I open the umbrella, put it between the sun and my subject, use two shoot through umbrellas (weighted down!--the weights are part of my lighting gear, in the shopping cart), and the results are great. For $7.50 (US), I have instant shade wherever and whenever I need it.

It’s amazing how much the entry level photographer is frightened by off-camera flash. When they want to improve the quality of their outdoor portraits they would rather pay $1500 for a portrait lens than simply pop for an inexpensive flash & modifier. If they will give a flash a try and allow themselves to make mistakes they will easily gain an understanding of how it works.

I am not sure which image you are referring to but I usually feather the strobe.
I like ur video....just a question, i got 150mm 2.8 sigma dc macro hsm, can i shoot portrait with great bokah like 70-200mm with it?.. Ihv nikon system
you can shoot portraits with it. take a few test shots with different focal lengths to see if you like that perspective.

Just use an ND filter when using non synch lights in the last lighting scenario and you can stop down to fully open up the aperture if that's the look you're going for.
Simple solution.

@@tonyserneels yeah, why not. Should use whatever works for you. No hard written rules. Experiment and use whatever is necessary.
Saket Gyani Oh yeah I didn't saw the strobe light part yet. Anyway, would you recommend an ND filter for every lens you have or do you know some way you can use one on many other lenses?

You're a true professional and I trust your tips. I have an upcoming shoot where they want to do a poolside photoshoot and I asked her if the pool is ever in the shade or is it in entirely in the direct sun. It looks like it's in direct sun. I'm trying to figure out what time of day to schedule the photoshoot. I think I'd like to start later in the day so we would have time for hair and makeup but I don't know, it gets hotter later in the day. So many things to think about. I know enough to know I want to bring an off camera flash and the scrim thing you used. I was also wondering about high speed sync. I might have to borrow my Dad's high speed sync strobe. I am going to have my daughter assist me, the client said she doesn't want a big crew.
Evening light it a really nice time to shoot to get beautiful light if you have a choice of the time to shoot.
Is this uploaded at UHD ? because on 1080p i see a ton of youtube artifacting and no option to go higher as of now.

Thank you for the video! I would like to shoot with an assistant every time, but the reality is I can't. Can you explain or maybe share a link to how the reflector attaches at the 4:42 mark? The reflector you use is not cheap, does the price include the stand that you are using, or is that all separate? Thanks!
It is worth the price. The frame keeps it solid and it is much easier to handle outside. I comes with a cross bar and clamp that can be put onto a stand. See it here: bhpho.to/3MEZdRp

It's amazing what a great tool the sun can be.
As much as I love shooting in natural light, living in the south makes shooting in harsh light (and heat) horrible. This video was so helpful.

Just did a shoot today, first time shooting in the Florida sun at high noon. Not my best work, but this video has given me a couple of adjustments to make for next time.

Yes you definitely could! And that's a great way to lower your exposure. These techniques are more about dealing with that sun and harsh shadows which an ND filter wouldn't fix.

What Lenses are you using please ?
I am using the Tamron 70-200mm, 24-70mm on Canon.
What's the minimum power of strobe required for something like this? Is 400w enough?
Probably 600w.
I use the Godox AD400Pro out in the harsh sunlight all the time. It's enough. 600 would be even better, obviously.
Any particular reason you didn't add the camera settings to the photos? Most TH-camrs do and it always interesting and educational to see when you're checking out the pix and reviewing the choices you made. Were you just being lazy during editing or is it a deliberate choice you made. WOuld be interested to hear why.
Wow we go to a lot of work to make great lessons. No one has ever called us lazy before. Its not in my nature. We will try and do that in the future.

hey UFGator, we don't intentionally try to do this type of cropping. Sometimes the screen is too small and we have to crop in.

Something weird with TH-cam? I've pulled video quality down to even 360p and it keeps buffering no matter on 4g or wifi. No other videos having this issue...

For some reason the TH-cam app on my tablet regularly gives me videos at less than 1080p, this one came at 720p. When I notice, I change to 1080p and it's fine.

I once shot video of me doing yoga with hot summer sun behind me ( i thought this was wrong ) but nice video clips, and when you face the sun to do selfie no good results

Do you meter HSS and if yes what is your process?
there isn't a meter out there that is set up to meter HSS that i'm aware of. so i do a few test shots and make calculations based on that.
I pretty much do the same thing since I noticed with my sekonic L-478 even though it goes up to 1000 shutter my exposure is never right and just wondered if you did something different when using your light meter for HSS😎
If you don't have HSS and don't wanna shell out the money, can't you use a ND filter? It might be a little bit less quality I know.
you can use an ND for sure. We just didn't go over it in this episode because it still doesn't solve some of the issues we were talking about like harsh shadows.
Will be even better in on screen you will also display camera settings when this photo was taken 4:35 ..wow..it is not damage sensor ?!!! .... (Noises at black photo with extreeme iso not skyhigh?!.... I thing my a7s2 is damaged just by overexposure picture to be white

it's actually right by my house. it's on private property sorry. we were able to film there as a favor.
Gear used : Tamrom 35mm, but i see another lens to, a Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 ? :)
I used the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens and the 35mm 1.8 Tamron Lens. Mostly the 70-200. I love the way it lets you drop the background out of focus. For shooting people its my favorite lens.

Excellent presentation. Addresses one of the most difficult location lighting scenarios out there.
BTW, Mair and all the models from all the photography presentations, on all the TH-cam channels, should at least publish their names and contact info on each youtube video in the "SHOW MORE" section and one or two other major web sites.
I keep seeing references to Instagram and Twitter or whoever uses the "@" and # signs, but I don't use or view either of them. Since all the presentations I see and which are probably the most seen presentations, are produced for TH-cam, then all photographer, model, gear, etc., should be right there on TH-cam, in "SHOW MORE".
Or, then at least, the models' web site or agency (model mayhem for example), can be used. Of course Facebook is another example of easy finding of models. For me, # and @ should only be used in replacement of swear words.

You can use ND filters to help you with the sync speed .... not only HSS
The problem with ND filters is that they reduce both the background and the strobes at the same time. That can work if you have the strobe power. If you are at f8 then you can use a 3 stop ND and get back to 2.8. Great point.
i understand that the new speedlights and strobes do bring HSS almost as a standard right now... but i do believe that a high quality ND filter specially a variable ND filter is a great tool to have .

@@steveliddle8417 yes... Contrary to popular belief all you need is as a most a 4 to 6 stop ND AND THE REST CAN BE DONE IN POST EXTREMELY EASY... :)

It depends on where the person is standing and what you are trying to accomplish. Fill light should never be stronger than the key light.
@@TheSlantedLens but the key light is effectively is the bounce as the sunlight is the backlight?
Helpful hint: If you can't afford the Manfrotto Human Combo Light & Reflector Stand, do what I do: MAKE all model/talent "escorts" WORK on the shoot....from hauling gear to coffee runs to holding grip gear/lighting. Because even TFP/trade work isn't free.....or equal.

My biggest problem with reflectors or skrims is that I need someone to hold them. I much prefer a light, set it on a stand and it's ready to go.
you can also set a reflector on a stand, but having someone hold it lets you do adjustments much faster.
And I have used a shoot through umbrella as a scrim which works softening the sunlight.

ND filters will come in hand for harsh sunlights :) I do my shoots in harsh lights with a 16ND and 1000ND - this helps me to shoot wide open also I can sync my OCF at HSS instagram.com/thefwordphotography/

I never understood why people think direct sunlight is unflattering-then I realised that these photographers are working with female subjects. I mainly photograph men, and high contrast lighting actually works very well to accentuate lines.
Anyway, I find direct sunlight is preferable to overcast light, which has too much blue light in the spectrum and too many reflections, making colours appear washed out. (This is where polarisers, warming filters or shooting slide film/postprocessing can help.) I even find sunlight preferable to flash, which is by default too cool for people with less melanin, i.e. white people.
Ah, that's an important thing to consider, who your subject is and what features you want to help define while shooting. Thanks for sharing your insight and preferences with us!

Who can afford to shoot with a assistant these days ??? Who is paying more than 300 for a outdoor headshot? LOL. Come on guys, you need to have a single shooter solution for "how-to" videos. Good tips and explanations. But that Sunbounce is unnecessary to put together when you have the collapsible bounces 3in1 or 5in1.
Sunbounce is also overpriced. So is Blackrapid. Folks, there are high quality alternatives for these at a fraction of the price these sell for.
Dynalites are great lights. I can recommend those as well. Yet so are numerous others, like Godox, or Cheatah, or other copies like Newwer, etc for very good prices. Keep up the great videos!
The reality is, if you are working alone, the Sunbounce is way easier to use because you can put it on a stand and it does not bend. It stays in place and it is much more effective!
@@TheSlantedLens outdoors? Maybe indoors, and sometimes outdoors...Often, its a sail outdoors. But maybe you can direct it with one hand and remote shoot with the other. Improvise they say!! LOL ..WAIT, I just checked the price on these...$340 to $650...WHAT, LOL...that is NUTS!!! That is insane. Folks, find yourself a local or not so local scrim shop that custom makes a lot of the gobo gear, and they can make it with frame for no more than $150, with custom scrim and such. I got a XL floppy flag (huge 4x4ft for $125. These companies like SUnbonce, Pocketwizard, and the like are still thinking we are getting $8-12K a day. LOL..Folks, maybe some all-stars are, but that is as few as A list actors. FYI, you can also put the 5in1 on a stand/holder, or use a small scrim jim like frame..Folks, I made my own frames out of window screens when I started. Just saying, when you start, you dont even know what you realy need in practice ! Try different things before you b uy a $650 cloth with alum frame, LOL Thats more than the cost of my 12x12 overhead butterfly !!

Tutorial needed, if it's summer and you're with people chances are you're in the direct sun.
a lot of people are scared to shoot in direct sun because of the harshness of light.
The Slanted Lens A lot of people don't shoot in direct sun because others tell them it looks bad.
Well, it actually does look bad for people being photographed... if you don't use anything to soften the light, a reflector, a HSS flash, etc... Harsh light creates unpleasant shadows that are just about impossible to correct in post prod
André Pepin You only get harsh shadows if you misuse the light.
Pff! Not true! In other words you're telling me I don't know how to use the available light (or sun light)? As JP mentioned, you can't control where the sun is in the sky with respect with the background you want to use behind your subject. Easy for you to say when you admitted not shooting people and shooting bugs, buildings, plants etc.
You missed one of the most obvious ones. Use the sun as key and your strobe as a fill right next to the lens 2.5-3.5 stops under the sun exposure.
