Very good system indeed, my father was a lead designer for the AS-90BH, he co-designed the 52 calibre barrel (AS-90s). Very proud. I even have a cast steel model of the vehicle.
Sad that Braveheart never came to fruition, it looked like a good system, and the idea to fit it to RN ships would have saved millions over the years in commonality of systems and ammunition. As far as I'm aware there is no longer the capability to manufacture barrels and artillery systems at Barrow any more?
Matsimus, I like watching those long intro style things sometimes but not others, maybe if you kept short intros but put all the footage at the end you could appease everyone.
If you are curious about Polish Krab SPH program - it is an interesting mix - it uses AS-90 Braveheart turet (with some modifications) K-9 Chasis (with some modifications) German MTU powerpack (1000hp) and 52cal. 155mm barrel ,and Polish communication and fire control systems - 120 of them been ordered by Polish Ministry of Defence - first batch of 24 to be delivered till summer this year.
awesome bit of kit. was deployed in Kosovo and Iraq why I was there. facts and figures on these things are awesome. 24 mile range and 1 battery wiping out a grid square is pretty good.
I've just come across your channel. Fantastic research and presentation, thanks man! (just transferred to an AS90 regt myself...) and about the intro... It's your channel but you obviously care about your subscribers and listen to what they desire so I don't think that's a negative thing (to those saying he should do what he wants) cheers mate :)
I don't know if u had a chance to read more ab that Krab development... Both tragic and funny. it all started after fall of comunism when Poland turned weatwards. Army began the process of modernisatation to NATO standards and part of it was supposed to be the procurement of 155mm SPG. Somewhere in mid 90't there waa a competition and at the end of it there were two guns left to choose from: PzH2000 ans AS90. Than someone decided that what we rly need is not the whole vehicle but only the turret - we can make a chasis ourselves... That dwcision favored AS90 as with the PZH2000 turret is much more integrated with the chasis. ok so bought the license for AS90 turret and set to work on a chasis. After many many years we developed UPG - "universal tracked platform" (based on T-72/PT-91 elements). Couple of years ago finally thay completed few viehicles to undergo trials... Bit during those it turned out that polish-developed chasis started to crack due to poor quality of steel used... So in the end we bought the license for a chasis from S.Korea (k9) and integrated it with the AS turret... looks like this time it finally passed the trials and was ordered for production (with the initial batch of 96 vehicles i think) earlier this month. so yeah - 20 years to produe a frankenstein gun: British turret, korean chasiss... made in Poland...
It makes even more entertaining that K9 chassis was built similar to AS90, because its hydropneumatics suspension was supposed to be licensed. The suspension failed absorbing shocks from 52 caliber, forcing K9 to use domestic instead. So yes, AS90 and K9 share some trait.
Worked on the Trials of the AS90 1989 to 1991. Was amazing bit of kit then. Miles ahead of anything at that time. It was originally designed for both gun systems. And had an auto loader with Manuel option. The gun system ran in to problems early on. Hence the larger gun got more and more delays. Also the auto loader was not always reliable. And was /Could be dangerous to the 2 loaders. It was also found that the 2 loaders were often quicker. It also helped reduce the procurement costs of the end vehicles with just the 1 gun and no auto loader. Many things have been changed and updated on this vehicle. To me in my mind it's still new (Lol. As like Chalky 2 and Warrior. We're the new kit at the time I first left the army. So my mind is still locked in past. So to me they still new.... Lol. But that was 28-29 yrs ago) I still work with /around much of this kit. And yes. Much of it is now dated. And being surpassed. All very capable kit. But it's time for some new designs to start coming into play. As we have focused on Iraq and Afghanistan to much for to long now. Our tactics and much of our new kit is basses on fighting insurgency type conflicts. Not like the cold war tactics of army v army that the Chalky 2. AS90 and Warrior were designed for.
Matsimus, Krab is slowly rolling out off assembly lines now - AS90 turret, 52 L gun (barrels are no longer german), K9 hull, polish fire control. Around 150 planned.
Matsimus I would also like to say thank you for fixing equipment after we brake it ahaha, the most recurring issues I remember about the Nasty was the Loading tray and engine, the engine does take abuse though before giving out. We push it through its paces for obvious reasons.
Once a Gunner always a Gunner! Trained in JLRRA on 25 pdr (great gun!), Then on the 105mm light gun. Then 13pdr WWI gun (KTRHA), then M109 155mm (2 regt RA) - fantastic crew heater in this, you had to keep bribing REME with beer to keep the heater working as it wasn't their top priority. Essential to the crew when on excercise in North Germany (Hohne) in the winter! Gun wasn't bad either! Great video by the way 👍
Just subbed:great, well put together, very informative, very very interesting videos. These videos bring a great sense of pride in our armed forces, and what they do and achieve. Thanks keep up the great work.
In my early 20's when I actually worked for a company that did a lot of work in Suffield. I still remember that one day, me and another guy working on an Atco trailer used as the Commanders communications base. Or something like that. We sat and watched a bunch of these sending rounds down range from about a 1000 yards away. I think these where them, that was over 20 years ago, so can't say for sure. But it was one hell of a site. Can't remember how many there where, but there where quite a few. I remember feeling the concussion from them when they would all fire at once. Probably one of the funniest days of work I remember. Than seeing the Challenger tanks coming by in columns. Damn they sure are a lot bigger in real life too. When we had jobs on the base I'd always beg the boss to send me. We actually built your bar on the base. Well it was on the Canadian side, but I'm sure you know about it. Remember sitting their hearing thr OJ Simpson verdict. I was only 22 I think. But after being out there, I was just about ready to join the military. But I choice the oil field for the money. And I still regret it. Made lots of money, but utterly hated it, and luckily went back to University at 30. But I think spending 4 years in the Military would have been an excellent move at that time. Ah , you live, you learn. I even thought of reserves. But I've got a plate and screws in one leg. Bad back, arthritis in my knees, and wrists. So I'm not sure I could have got in. That's what I was told by a friend who served Active and reserves. But I do a lot of shooting, and hunting which gives me some joy. Lol. Shot a coyote at 380 yards with a 25 yo browning blr. On 3 power yesterday.lol I was so rushed I forgot to turn the scope up. It was my uncles rifle. But then I missed a gimme at 200 yards because my shooting sticks where set to low. But I got my Savage LRP in a MDT chassis, waiting on the butt stock, and glass. It's got a very accurate Savage 26" 243 barrel on it. Shoots 1/2 moa at a hundred yards or better even with factory hornandy 75gs. But I'm getting a JC customs barrel in most likely 6.5cm this winter. Gonna even get him to true up the action, which in a savage, might not even be needed. Plus a precision bolt head from PTG's and a new 1/4" recoil lug from the same place. I want that thing shooting one hole groups off the bench. Part of me thinks I should have just bought that Tikka TAC 1. Oops , getting into my gun fantasies.lol. Again great vid.
When I was on an AS90 tech course 5 guys who'd never been involved with a pack removal, and therefore had to go over every step in the AESP, got a pack out and on the ground in 45mins.
Well well... great video! Now that you have chosen this patch you almost _have_ to do the Panzerhaubitze 2000. It is the main not counterpart but comparable piece of hardware. It's slightly more modern but only by a few years and it would be very interesting to see a comparison! The PzH2000 an extremely impressive combat vehicle as well and it would be interesting to know where it is better and where it is worse than the AS90. But even more interesting would be a video about a modern close range defense system. Namely the Mantis for me because frankly I only know this one and I think it is mind blowing! I know it is not your main field of interest and knowledge but it will be put on a tank chassis eventually so... :D You could give your opinion how such systems will interact with armored vehicles and how they will change possible engagements. It's super easy to think about it for systems like the AS90 here. You kind of said that we won't be able to use such self propelled guns they way they are intended for quiet a while now. Obviously with the great counter measures available. So imagine 3 hypothetic Mantis (or whatever) tanks attached to a group of self propelled guns. Obviously ludicrously expensive but if it is the only way to make actual use out of the artillery it has to happen anyways. So the Mantis gun has a pretty good probability to shoot down incoming artillery shells. It actually is designed to do this as protection turret for high value targets like field camps and airfields and eventually frigates. Not to speak of several of them. Helicopters and low flying fighters are munched for breakfast by these advanced cannons. Smaller incoming missiles should be no issue at all unless we are speaking of real masses. So these tanks would allow the artillery to operate much safer and allowing it to counter measure counter measure fire and air force. What do you think of that idea and such super advanced conventional cannons and their mind blowing targeting computers and sensors?
Great video Maximus! You talk about kilometres (metric) and then jump to miles (imperial) a few sentences later. I've live in countries that have both systems, so I get it. I'm not sure that someone living in Germany or France would understand miles, just as your US viewers may not understand kilometres. I don't mean to sound carping, but just thought that it might aid in comprehending your great videos! Thanks brother!
I know this system well with the right charge, shell and fuze setting it can kill any TANK in the early 2000's if its in 1-1.5km range very very deadly possibly still could even today. Thank you for making this video great Gun I mainly operated these in harsh winter conditions, it is a very robust platform not had the chance to use in in desert conditions.
Great video. I doubt arty is going away any time soon. Its just too useful. There are so many fire missions varty can do that air power simply cannot do, in particular sustained fire missions. Against advanced enemies with counter better fire then shoot and scoot must still be used, we just need faster deploying, faster shooting and faster ready to move weapons, such as the archer system. Being MIRSE capable is a big plus also. (Probably missspelt the acroynm, sorry) Plus arty is much less expensive than air strikes, is less concerned about SAMs, air suppority, weather, ECM etc. Doesn't need airfields either and can be rearmed in the field. I like arty 😄
I joined RA back in 1970 . After training had the option of Para's or Commando Regt. They packed a pea shooters by comparison (105 Pack Howitzer) , but that was for a different job in close support RM infantry , ship to shore. I would have liked to have got on to something much bigger. These AS90 look really super guns.
Hi Mat! Were you part of Mike Linge's regiment at Larkhill back in the mid/late '90s? BTW, I did a lot of the R&A work (operating a tracking radar used for testing the AS90 back in the 1980s/90s). A wonderful, reliable gun which quickly replaced the dreadful FH70. I did all the trials on the M.L.R.S. too, for Desert Storm. (Steel Rain). Mike brought a regiment up to Eskmeals in circa 1996 to familiarise with the launcher. They all lived under canvass on the range...good times!
Matsimus Gaming Yes it was fun as a chief but before you make that rank its one of the toughest jobs in the Army, everything weighs a ton! Thanks for the nice words, 2 of my squad-mates didn't come home so its nice hearing something positive.
Really nice job with the intro and the rest of the video, very informative. I started my own channel trying to learn animation since I am disabled from my last tour. I've got 600 subs and if I can get a fraction of your amount of subs I'll be very happy.
The camp where I work used to have the RA export team on site and they used to practice burst firing till they got it down to under 10 secs for a 3 round burst. Given that the charge bag and the primer has to be loaded manually... that's not bad shooting.
4 years late replying but you are never an ex Gunner! Always in the family "once a Gunner always a Gunner!" I'm ex JLRRA, KTRHA and 2 Regt RA. Big respect to you 👍
I think these are excellent for the UK but I wish we also still had a 105mm SPG in service due to the size of the AS90 if you want to move them by air into a place and you don't always need the power of a 155mm shell. Thank you for the video and thumbs up. 👍
Do you want to know what i like about your videos you always seem to do your research before making them unlike some vids that just throw random wiki quote thrown together keep up the gd work.
Very good video as always. Great info. Looks beastly. Looking forward to seeing what happens to the C2 next. You think theyll go for smooth bore our stuck with rifled? Anyway, hope Canada isnt too brisk today😂 Look forward to more videos
Hey, Matt do you ever watch The Chieftain's channel?? You should see the ones he did the American M55 self-propelled howitzer and his AS-90 with Sofilein. The M55 has a nice feature with the back end. Perfect for bar and grill downtimes. LOL
Have two questions. Is tha AS-90 set up to fire the M982 Excalibur round. And, does the AS-90 have much transmission problems? Great video and informative.
This does look like the best of the options. Now let's see it re-developed to auto-load NATO 155 with a rate of 5 shots per minute and a two-man crew and a 120kph speed.
Good system for twenty years ago but it's about time an unmanned turret 155mm were being developed. The new Russian Armata MBT should be showing our staff officers the way things are going. An unmanned turret would give a real "shoot and scoot" capability. Not to mention reduce the number of servicemen with tinnitus (which I have)
Can you cover, in a very basic level, where the self propelled artillery tactics stand today and what direction you think it is heading and why. I finished this video and felt a little confused about the future survivability of these weapons.
Very good system indeed, my father was a lead designer for the AS-90BH, he co-designed the 52 calibre barrel (AS-90s). Very proud. I even have a cast steel model of the vehicle.
I thank him for his service 🇬🇧
For a second I thought he was co designing ka52 heli 💀💀

As far as I'm aware there is no longer the capability to manufacture barrels and artillery systems at Barrow any more?
Love it when these rattle my windows from five miles away.
(i live near Salisbury plain)
3 rounds in 10 sec is the definition of shoot-and-scoot. Very nice work.
For those who constantly complain about my intro being too long, you happy now...... 🙄
Yes. I never complained but yes.
Matsimus, I like watching those long intro style things sometimes but not others, maybe if you kept short intros but put all the footage at the end you could appease everyone.
I never but okay....
Matsimus Gaming noooo i liked your long tank intros D:
Matsimus Gaming I have NO complaints here mate, just keep doing what you are doing. Nice videos with lots of information, and facts.
AS-90 is one of those bits of kit, like Challenger 2, that really make me glad to be British.
My grandfather was in the RA under Monty in North Africa.
Back when the 25pdr was the shizzle of arty!
My grandad was in the desert rats in El-Alamein
My great uncle was an RSM in Burma. And his brother was on HMS AJAX. MY grandad looked after Italian POWs at wollaton hall

Brikorland gun?
The best feeling is when your artillary hits home on Wargame
Tesla agreed haha! Thanks for watching
The best feeling is when your artillery hits home when you are in contact.
Immediate suppression, danger close.
shame we don't get 2 extra via naval tab
Thanks for the review. I was going to get one of these, but have decided now to get a Fiesta.

For us getting a new engine for the nasty is state of the art😂
I really like how you present stuff Matsimus. Thanks for the video.
my dad used these, one of the only things left that make me proud to be British.
These things are awesome.
Hearing these shells going over head is amazing too.
Great video
Also known as the "choirboy" by British servicemen because it was buggered by Vickers!
At least it keeps the British artillery-named-for-clergy thing going :D Deacon, Sexton, Priest, Abbot... Choirboy :s
True, never thought of that!
Matsimus, Krab is slowly rolling out off assembly lines now - AS90 turret, 52 L gun (barrels are no longer german), K9 hull, polish fire control. Around 150 planned.
This made a old Gunner happy. Thank you.
Those last still shots of the round leaving the barrel of the guns/cannon were amazing.
,
Glad to have served as an as90 gunner
Matsimus I would also like to say thank you for fixing equipment after we brake it ahaha, the most recurring issues I remember about the Nasty was the Loading tray and engine, the engine does take abuse though before giving out. We push it through its paces for obvious reasons.

Polish KRAB is fully operational now. One of the best MAS on the market now. Polish PGZ manufacturing 52kal barrels and K9 shasy.
Just subbed:great, well put together, very informative, very very interesting videos. These videos bring a great sense of pride in our armed forces, and what they do and achieve. Thanks keep up the great work.
Thank you so much!! 👍🙂
Brilliant enjoyed that walk through of the AS90
richie rich thanks for watching!! Really glad you liked it! Check out my video on the royal artillery Stormer also! You might like it! Thanks :-)
will check it out mate cheers : ))))
I served for nearly 11 years with the RA, unfortunately never with the AS 90. An awesome SPG
P.S. The dog was so cool
Dude I love your videos!
It's also nice to hear something about the AS90, I've never really noticed this piece of artillery.
Greetings from Germany!

A nicely put together overview. Thumbs up...
The news is all about UK sending some Challengers to Ukraine, but I think sending 30 of these is the bigger story
To heavy might be a problem on the wet lands of Ukrain
This is my back up plan if I dont get army air core, I cant wait for Harrogate. Thanks your channel has been so helpfull.
I have seen them at Salisbury plain they are bloody massive and they are loud AT. Even from 3 miles away!
Ben Sluman yeah they really are. Bloody impressive though :-D
Thanks so much for watching
Good knowledge of the As90
The 155mm is a beast of a gun

That semi-autoloading system looks pretty sweet.
I had the opportunity to drive an AS90 across Salisbury Plain. I was doing some work with the RAHQ at Larkhill at the time.
I never saw these fire and I'm also bloody glad I would've never been on the receiving end of these bad boys either..... she is a beast!!!🇬🇧🇬🇧✌✌
I'd love to hear your opinion on the dual barreled 120mm Patria Amos mortar system

they were still testing it in 89 at larkhill used to see it go through when was on stag duty at Robert barracks
In my contry we got same AS90, but only turret rest is corean K9.Wen we connected of this two parts we made very good gun
it was a pretty sweet video, I would love to see more like it in the future.
I served on the American equivalent the M109 as a Gun Chief and also on the towed version M198, Since replaced by the M777
Gary B thank you for your service sir. Must have been a hell of a job!!

Yes it was fun as a chief but before you make that rank its one of the toughest jobs in the Army, everything weighs a ton!
Gary B I might be able to help with that my friend ;-)
Matsimus Gaming
if you've made a video about your time in the service link it for me, would like to see something like that
This is gonna be one of my options still goin thru the application process would love to get to use and maintain one of these beasts
I like the semi-auto loading routine, at 5:45. 😛
Unholy Warrior haha pretty cool hey! Thanks for watching fellow legionaire ;-)
The camp where I work used to have the RA export team on site and they used to practice burst firing till they got it down to under 10 secs for a 3 round burst. Given that the charge bag and the primer has to be loaded manually... that's not bad shooting.
I love the intro on your videos bro!
I'm an ex Gunner from 26 Regt RA. Great video mate :)
4 years late replying but you are never an ex Gunner! Always in the family "once a Gunner always a Gunner!"
I'm ex JLRRA, KTRHA and 2 Regt RA.
Big respect to you 👍
Mansergh bks 👍
My Dad was in 14 Regt RA, 19 Regt RA,and 40 Regt RA.👍😃🇬🇧
I remember that Ex in Jordan first tme the nasty had been tested properly in the desert. J battery 3 RHA.
My cousin worked on the software for these. He can't say much but sounds pretty good.
Finally something with some head room.
Fantastically awesome, great to see ❤️❤️👍👍👍😀😀😀
Too nice video about powerful Artillery S 90. ( self propelled) with thanks for you
I think these are excellent for the UK but I wish we also still had a 105mm SPG in service due to the size of the AS90 if you want to move them by air into a place and you don't always need the power of a 155mm shell. Thank you for the video and thumbs up. 👍
Make video about the Polish KRAB howitzer system... :) All the best !
Aspiring to join 19 regt RA (Scots gunners) next year as an AS-90 Gunner. 🏴💪
My Dad was in 19 Regt RA at Dortmund 👍
Do you want to know what i like about your videos you always seem to do your research before making them unlike some vids that just throw random wiki quote thrown together keep up the gd work.
I remember watching this video 3 years ago and a week later a AS90 crossed the road right in front of me
Great vid. Just a word to the wise: Thales is French so pronounced in two syllables with silent H: Tal-es
Not indestructible mind you ;) I was on MEDMAN2 when one of these blew up! Had to get my Samson over the prairie burn as quick as possible for eyes on
Very good video as always.
Great info.
Looks beastly.
Looking forward to seeing what happens to the C2 next.
You think theyll go for smooth bore our stuck with rifled?
Anyway, hope Canada isnt too brisk today😂
Look forward to more videos
Hey, Matt do you ever watch The Chieftain's channel?? You should see the ones he did the American M55 self-propelled howitzer and his AS-90 with Sofilein. The M55 has a nice feature with the back end. Perfect for bar and grill downtimes. LOL
Another great video! thanks!
Polish SPG Krab is going to have the same turret and gun :)
Polish SPG AHS Crab has similar turret but it has completely different gun.
What do you get when you fuse an as 90 woth a spg crab.
A as crab.
very interesting, good vid mate
It's most definitely a bad boy!!
God bless you and protect you ❤
good vid but any chance of using miles and inches as well, for us English folk that are over 30 Y.O?
FWIW, multiply kilometers by 0.6 to get miles. This is one conversion I've learned to do quickly in my head.
Where did you get that intro from? i like it.
>~< where's ma leopard vid m8 trial 2
yutshu chan it will come. Be patient :-)
£300M? That's only the price of one football player 😂
When you are looking at some SPGs, can you also take a look at the Panzerhaubitze 2000? (Pzh 2000).
Great video. I'm subscribing.
Thales is pronounced "Talis"
Shane Schofield my bad! Thanks for subscribing!! 👍
I read that the UK may be sending some of these to the Ukraine!
Slava UK
Im a bit late, but never the less great vid bud.
We'll soon see what they're worth on the battlefield...
Poland uses the Braveheart turret on their SPA now and just gave a load of them to Ukraine!!! Thanks!!!
Start my phase 1 training for the Royal Armoured Corps soon. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for your neat vids! :)
No "G" in Cummins (engine mfr), and the AGLS accuracy should be 1 mil (about 1/19 of a degree angular measure) not 1 mile.
hey dude thanks for making these videos they are amazing keep it up. good luck in the future. first comment😂
I hear these things firing all the time on the salisbury plain
Have two questions. Is tha AS-90 set up to fire the M982 Excalibur round. And, does the AS-90 have much transmission problems?
Great video and informative.
This does look like the best of the options.
Now let's see it re-developed to auto-load NATO 155 with a rate of 5 shots per minute and a two-man crew and a 120kph speed.
can you do something like this on serbian nora howitzer? its cheap and it has good range.
Good system for twenty years ago but it's about time an unmanned turret 155mm were being developed.
The new Russian Armata MBT should be showing our staff officers the way things are going.
An unmanned turret would give a real "shoot and scoot" capability. Not to mention reduce the number of servicemen with tinnitus (which I have)
numbersix100 the german donar has an unmanned turret.
If they can add the Type 75, they can add this to war thunder. Can't wait for another British derp
Sounds like the rumours about shoot and scoot being obsolete were, well, exagerated.
They train on these near where I live
Can you cover, in a very basic level, where the self propelled artillery tactics stand today and what direction you think it is heading and why. I finished this video and felt a little confused about the future survivability of these weapons.
Enjoyed the video. However Thales is pronounced Tah-les🙂
