I love the fact that she is wearing a Rip-It mask. Folks, I write about orthodontics and they have told me about the softball injuries. They say, "Anyone who looks at the x-rays would never go out in the circle again without the mask." Young women have avoided facial fractures and bashed teeth because they wore the protection, and Montana Fouts is proof that they don't affect your performance. I do not think the masks should be mandatory, but I sure think it's smart.
I believe you...I would be terrified being a pitcher in either softball or baseball. I'd wear that mask for sure. This is the first time I've ever seen someone wearing one though
It’s actually mandatory in a good percentage of youth softball settings. Having seen some very bad incidents in youth baseball I wish it were culturally accepted there. Some baseball rules actually get in the way of wearing one, like requirement to wear a cap (since no one has designed a mask compatible with a cap). It might take an onfield death or disfigurement for parents to see the light on this and consider advocating for pitcher protection.

I'm surprised they're not mandatory. They have a lot less time to react in softball than they do in baseball.
Getting hit in the body is actually the bigger problem. Multiple players have died from getting hit in the chest by baseballs and softballs. I even remember, it seems like around a decade ago, but some boy died when he fell on a softball with his chest. There has been a lot of deaths from getting hit in the body from baseballs and softballs, and they stupidly are way behind on fixing it.
My daughter pitches also and always wears the mask. Some of her teammates do also

Fouts was completely dominant. 13 of her strikeouts were on swings, and UCLA only hit two balls remotely hard the entire game.

I've said this before, and I mean this with no disrespect -- quite the opposite, in fact -- but these women are WAY too talented to be playing on a field with the same dimensions I played Little League Baseball on when I was 9. A sharply-hit grounder to second base should really not result in a bang-bang play at first, but it always always does.

It looks like UCLA's last perfect game was against WMU in 1982.

In high school I had a girl in my gym class that eventually went on to pitch for the Canadian softball team, at the time I had no idea she was a ball player though. The gym teacher bet me, in front of the whole class, that she could strike me out...I was like "huh, no way, like come on". Sure as shit she made me look silly. Most people don't realize how much bend the ball has when you use that throwing motion. One pitch i thought was gonna crack me in the skull but it dropped hard and away & right over the plate. I got humbled hard.
Okay so I realize that I'm stealing from previous comments but......She got 21 "perfect" outs on her 21st birthday in 2021 which had not been done in 21 years and it's the 21st century. Did I mention her final out's batting average was 321??? AMAZING!
