Thanks man! There was so much video that I edited out, this was a long one! She's quite happy and hoped to get it back today, but I'm still doing some more work, more videos coming up!
Good video, Lord Duckman. The first thing I did was to see if my reverse lights were hooked up to my negative on my coil. They are not. That negative wire you had floating around the alternator. That goes on the generator post. Ground. That is how my fastback is wired. I guess with the alternator, they didn't have to use it. I really love my automatic transmission on my fastback. That engine runs great now. And so clean looking. Once again, great video, Duckman 🦆. Noel
Thanks man! Yes you are correct.... IF this were still a generator car, that green wire would go to the DF post on the generator itself. But now that this has an alternator, I am uncertain what the previous wiring tech did here. Normally you'd still connect that green wire to the new alternator, then remove the regulator under the back seat and put the blue and green wires together there for your idiot lite. This alternator has its own blue wire that seems to control the idiot light. I will have to chase these wirse and see where they go, the green one may now go to nothing....
Yes Sir! That thing is gonna be a creampuf when you give it back. Addressing all the issues. That water thing is a good catch. I hope you fix the rust for the bumper mount as well. Gotta give you credit Duckman, you know your stuff on the air cooled VWs. Well done!
I remember back in the 80s Hot VWs and VW Trends magazines were touting the 009, I never bit. I was desperate to get more juice out of my 74 Super Beetle though. MISS that car
Well, a 009 is fine on a race car that has 2 speeds, idle and WOT! Or a generator, compressor, aircraft, tractor... etc, but not a traffic-driven car! If your carb lacks a vacuum port, then the carbs are no good either. 😁👍🦆💩
@38:48 Raining when the sun is shining is a thing my South Georgia family called "The Devil beating his wife". 😁 @1:02:19 I'm Kinda OCD (Most Engineers are) but *I* crimp my connectors and THEN solder them, then shrink tubing. Had a nice conversation with an acquaintance that used to build satellites for an unnamed government entity (the kind in space). We got to talking about crimp connectors and when I told him MY method he said: "WE wanted to do them that way, but they wouldn't let us".
Great video Duckman Love the old Square Back!! It sounds terrific too. I only ran a 009 Dist on my built up 72 Super Beetle. I had a wild set up in it with Crower Dune Buggy cam, high lift rockers, high oil press , headers, Holley Bug Spray Carb, jetted for best performance. Love your videos man, keep them coming.
Hey Lord Glenn, once again great show. I do so enjoy watching your videos. The commentary that you give as you're working is entertaining and informative. Thanks for the show.
The old wiring associated with the alternator and ignition coil is from when the vehicle had a dynamo instead. The green one is the field lead DF from the underseat regulator. The brown is the ground 31 also from the underseat regulator.
I'm very familiar with the old generator wiring, however this does not match what is expected to be here. Did you see a brown wire? I didn't lol! There is a blue wire instead that goes to the warning light, and the green wire is the wrong color green. I'll be tracing these to figure out what's going on here.
@@DuckmanCycles If the green wire is the same colour shade as that of the contact points/condenser set up it could be associated with the diagnostics socket wiring fitted from August 1970 onwards. Might find the blue goes into a blue/white wire under the rear seat via a single connector. This is where the voltage regulator was fitted that was associated with the original dynamo.
That might even be too thick, but VW did recommend that in some Buses. I put 20w50 that in the Type 3 once listening to someone else, blew all the old seals and even the oil dipstick bellows. Oil everywhere. Went back to SAE30, all the leakage problems went away, and that was Florida summer for ya. An oil temperature gauge would be good to you, and maybe an external cooler if it runs that hot. Thanks for the feedback!
@@DuckmanCycles even my old rail with 1835 , even had external cooler with electric fan. But that thing is another story. Never lend your cars out. Never know how it will run after
Sure, vacuum has delay, and its brief... but your 009 you have to rev to get it to advance... which is also a delay. Either one of those problems is resolved by driving habits. The only thing better than a proper SVDA on an air-cooled VW engine is electronic ignition with a TPS sensor, but by the time you get to that point you should be running a modern fuel injection system anyway. The timing curve on a 009 also isn't any good. If you really need a single-advance distributor, use a 010 or a 011, and keep the 009 on the industrial engines, boat engines, and aircraft where the engine runs at a constant RPM all the time and timing curve and advance doesn't matter. There is a reason I have a whole trash can full of 009 distributors, lol!
No…. LoL. This is stock. Masking a problem with a correct part makes no sense. A whole trash can full of bad 009s, eh? They still don’t belong on a street car, or VW would have used them, they’d be a cheaper solution, would have saved them millions.
Haha, I used to be 2 blocks away from that one, also! I CAN RELATE! But rarely do my videos ever get affected by a train. Its only 3 blocks from here, but very infrequent!
Nice job! Question: did this one have the little spring on the distributor drive? The service manual specifies it; not sure exactly what’s the purpose but it’s there.
The little spring keeps tension on the drive so it has a little room to play, but doesn't come out. It's kind of an awkward design in my opinion, but thats the way it works!
No, there's absolutely nothing electrical about these tansmissions at all! Just romp the pedal and it should downshift. I find a little more responsive if you knock it down manually with the shifter though. Driving habits. Hope that helps!
Probably one of two things... the flywheel seal, or the O-ring in the flywheel. Both are pretty easy to replace if you have the right tools. Hopefully nothing more severe like cracked case, usually around cylinder 3 is where they crack, IF they crack. Hope that helps... check out this video for more information th-cam.com/video/a66qKyrMNdc/w-d-xo.html
@DuckmanCycles and VW Garage no actually last year that aftermarket fuel pump started putting gas into the oil haven't changed it yet and it's blowing out the dipstick.high oil lvl

Curious; did you connect the Distributor vacuum to only 1 of the carburetors or both (with a 'T')? Could the car been rear-ended explaining the fiberglass rear apron and the new window seals? 1:33:32 She must watch your channel. LOL!
You only need one carb connected, it makes enough signal. The car has a lot of rust in the rear, but absence of wrinkles underneath. The front end is a different story, we covered that one in an earlier video.... lol
Hey MFDM! when you turned on the left indicator during the test drive both left and right dash lights flashed...is that an issue somewhere? Good vid, enjoy your Blue Cup! 👍
Nope, that's the way a VW indicator works! It can be wired independently, however if you chose too... but the operation you saw is the correct one! I don't fancy it, I'd rewire it, but that's just me! Thanks man!

Oh man, its always harder to follow-up on someone else, case in point here with the 009 being loose. I say the same thing in the web industry, you want me to fix a problem on a website that someone else made? LOL! I know well in advance that's gonna be an issue. Are you sure you don't just want a new website? Hahaha!
Hmmmm...an atomic transmission ...guaranteed to blow up on you...(eventually.) That appears to be the same engine I have in my Volksrod project. I need to score a flywheel and some carbs for it.
