An often little known nerd fact, Scott Weiland came up with the verse riff, Dean had Scott hum it to him and the rest is history. Great lesson, I love STP, the Deleo brothers are excellent song writers and fly under the radar far too often amongst musicians.
Dean's feel and attack is so distinct.. He's another that I love his style and playing. Thanks again for a great choice. I used to cover "Unglued" many years ago.
It is amazing to know now that all stone temple pilot guitar riffs were done with standart tuning with such unique sound... one of the best alternative hard rock bands from the 90's
Great video and lesson as always, we need more lessons from STP, I know your suggestions come from Patreon, but I would absolutely love to hear your take on 7 Caged Tigers, there is a hell of a lot more going on in that song with both the chords and voicings than meets the ears.
He was also real cool and super nice about 2 strangers just walking up to him and shooting the shit.. he tried to pretend he was someone else..just a regular guy.. but hey man..I grew up watching them..I knew who he was
Great lesson Matt! One of those songs that I always wanted to figure out and just didn’t for some reason. Could have sworn it was on dropped D or maybe half step back from standard, amazing how Dean makes his Les Paul sound on this one!
Dean played it but Robert wrote that guitar part. Watch the Rick Beato interview with Robert Deleo. It's around the 35 minnutes point. He talks about how Scott Ran into Masa Boogie where Robert worked and told Robert he had the melody in his head. Robert transposed Scott humming into a guitar riff. Both Deleo brothers play guitar very well. Both of them are extremely talented. Robert wrote guitar parts to STP songs you'd be shocked to know, Like Interstate Love Song for example.
Thank you for showing the overdrive and chorus combination , a lot of people think most guitars play real dry but they're dead wrong you always need color with your sound.
Wow, even the Core transcription book I learned from back in the day was wrong. It said to just play open A and D together for the first chord. But I found a video of Robert DeLeo telling the story of the song to Rick Beato, how Scott came up with the riff and Rob worked it out on gtr, and it is indeed the 5577 voicing. Makes sense since that same 5th-in-the-bass type shape appears in the next part too, that B5/F#. Thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick!
Wow my friend I was there when you first started. It's so great to see how Good your doing. You and (Ryan. 😉All love here) Deserve to get tons more views. Wow. I'm so happy for ya. I was away from you tube for the past 18 months or so. Great work. God 🙌 Bless Brother
Your lesson is spot on. Great job. There is one small, but extremely important part that you missed. On the f sharp part where you are palm muting while he sings “ you can’t swallow what I’m thinking” at the end of each bar he strums all strings 244X00. If you had that part in there that lesson will be 100% perfect. It may be an overdub the studio track. But he definitely plays it live. Absolutely the most accurate lesson out of about 1000 of them on TH-cam that are wrong.
Fact, Dean s childhood best friend was Gun slinger, Glenn Campbell, Dean said in interviews that he copped a lot of riffs from Glenn and changed the feel.
@@LetsPlayAll lol right? Ive got a bunch of the reissue skate stuff that i used to wear as a kid..stuff is timeless! How cool would it be to make your own hoodie with a play on the screaming hand concept... hmmm 🤔😁
haha i was sure it would be in some dropped tuning but I watched some vids of him live and was like.....his E chord is played in standard tuning what the whaaat! Was rewarding to nail this one, i think ive got it pretty close to how Dean's playing it!
@@LetsPlayAll Fascinating how the D power chord with the addition of the low A note on the E string sounds so heavy that it makes you drop tune to D! ;) Thanks for the video, subscribed!
@@vuurvliegje5150 yea it’s a totally natural assumption and the double stops on the E and A are just an unusual approach. But that’s Dean for you! Thanks for the sub! 😊🤘
Dean is criminally underrated as a riff writer. LOVE this song. So glad I recently found this channel. Love your playing and that whole era.
thanks for the kind words Ryan! Completely agree, he must be one of the more genuinely under-rated guitar players
An often little known nerd fact, Scott Weiland came up with the verse riff, Dean had Scott hum it to him and the rest is history.
Great lesson, I love STP, the Deleo brothers are excellent song writers and fly under the radar far too often amongst musicians.
I always thought it was interesting how Rob was the primary songwriter
Agreed. Piece of pie is one of my fav riffs and no one knows the damn song lol
Truth
Dean's feel and attack is so distinct.. He's another that I love his style and playing. Thanks again for a great choice. I used to cover "Unglued" many years ago.
yea he's an amazing player, his chord voicings are something else!
Him and josh homme are some of my favorites, they both have a unique way of playing and creative riffs
@@Hevvvyyy Josh is another with a very cool style.
@@TVoltG fr, he just sounds different with the odd scales and stuff, a great songwriter too
The most accurate description of Dean's guitar playing, ive read
It is amazing to know now that all stone temple pilot guitar riffs were done with standart tuning with such unique sound... one of the best alternative hard rock bands from the 90's
Dran DeLeo is one of the most underrated guitarists in music history. And, a really nice guy on top of it.
yes please more STP.
One of the best songs ever, RIP Scott wish I could've seen them in concert
me too man!
I missed seeing STP, but did catch Velvet Revolver twice. All i can saw both shows were absolutely incredible.
I saw them several times in sofla weiland was high af but they were great
One of the best riffs ever written! So thick and badass chops!

This is the first album I ever sat down and learned note for note on the guitar. Thanks Dean Deleo
I met Dean DeLeo outside their tour us in Dawson's creek bc Canada.. was an awesome show
He was also real cool and super nice about 2 strangers just walking up to him and shooting the shit.. he tried to pretend he was someone else..just a regular guy.. but hey man..I grew up watching them..I knew who he was
wow that's very cool indeed mate!
what year did they play in Dawson's Creek?
I love the album Core by STP. Thank you
That tone sounds Amazing !! And you play this song spot on !!! Shout out to you my friend !!!
Thanks Jake!
You can also use the open strings both A and D as the first opening chord
That's how I learned it too
Great lesson Matt! One of those songs that I always wanted to figure out and just didn’t for some reason. Could have sworn it was on dropped D or maybe half step back from standard, amazing how Dean makes his Les Paul sound on this one!
Cheers Luis! Yea took me a little while watching vids of him live to see it's defo played in std tuning. He's a genius, love his chord voicings!
I always thought it was drop d too. Guess it’s the double stop on the low E at the end of the riff that gives that vibe.
@@LetsPlayAll yes he's a master of chord voicings for sure him and his brother Robert plays guitar too u know.
One thing I noticed is that all amazing bands have stones in em. Rolling Stones, Stone Sour, Stone Temple Pilots and ofc, Stone Gossard
Queens of the Stone Age
Haha Stoner Rock is an entire genre 😂💜
What about "Sixteen Stone" album by Bush?))

After all those years I'm still haunted by this Song , and it was clear that you gonna nail the sound 🤘

I could live happy forever with a guitar and STP first 3 albums.

Glens son and dean would jam a lot as kids, Plush is one he specifically said he ripped, blue grass banjo riff originally show by Glenn to dean
Yeah! Love this one! (wish my acoustic could sound that beefy) 👌😁
Brilliant my guy!
Can you do Silvergun Superman of the Purple album?
All will be done (eventually) mate, if you're super keen then patreon best bet :-)
Nice one 🤘🤘🤘
What a riff!!
this made me so happy thank you
And that makes me happy too! You’re welcome 😀🤘
I always heard that Scott came up with the main riff for that song.
Awesome great music song rock good guitar 🎸
You're the only on teaching this correctly I believe. Even the online tabs are wrong. Thanks!

Will it sound different in your les paul?
Yea marginally, different woods, different bridge pickup but both have humbuckers. My LP isn’t actually a les Paul tho it’s a Japanese made Edwards 😀
Honestly I took a stab at it (back in the day) and I thought it was F and G. Nice hoodie
:-) thanks man!
Play it on the a and d strings
Excuse me but what amp do you use? I guess you got this question lotsa times. Sorry about that
No problem mate happy to help, it's a Victory V40
that tone how are u doing that
Explained at the beginning of the video mate, distortion and chorus
Apparently, a part of his huge sounding tone was having a stereo rig with one clean amp and one dirty.
