Thanks for this. Our agitator on a similar nineteen-year-old GE model was working fine, but our clothes were spotted from what we thought maybe an oil leak from underneath the agitator. We easily remove the agitator using your video and located the leak. Cost of parts and labor for repair at this point means that we're buying a new unit. But thanks again for your help.
Thank you so much. You saved us from buying a new washing machine and my wife said I was her hero. Projects don’t usually go smoothly for me but your tips laid it out great. Thanks for the heads up on watching my face when pulling the main assembly out.
Thank you so much for this! I tried several different ways of reefing on this for hours until I saw this. The critical step is letting the agitator soak. I let mine soak for about half an hour in hot water. After draining, a few good tugs with rope made it pop right off. I’ll be following your posts from now on.
Thank you for this video. I bought the part from a local appliance repair shop for $16 and replaced it in a few minutes. Agitator came out easy. Coupler took some persuading. Pushing it back down like you showed in the video a couple times helped the most I think. The teeth look okay on the old one until I ran a screwdriver around the inside of the coupler and all the gear shaped gunk started falling out. Works good as new.
Hey dude very helpfull....saw the video. .was able to lift agitator with rubber gloves..removed coupling..went to get part.. (23.18$..at electro place 4minutes from my work)..came back and installed. ..took under 1 minute to be exact. ..started machine wash cycle...works like a charm !!..cant thank you enough !!👍👍👍👍
Great video, I used a cargo tie down strap which allowed me to keep my hands out of the machine and the extra length help snap it right out with hardly any effort.
Thank you for saving me money. Every other video was showing to remove the cap and then the plastic divider that sits above most bolts. They were showing the same type of GE but evidently using the inside of another video. I thought someone had placed the plastic divider in upside down and was getting ready to drill a hole in it to remove. Thankfully I looked for the part before I destroyed it because I couldn't find that part so I new something else was going on. I have seen your videos before and you have always come through for me.
Terrific video. One small point. If you can get your fingers under the agitator and pull it out vs using a string/rope, much more efficient. I was able to do that on mine.
The comments are very helpful too. I was in my mind trying to figure out how to rig up something to keep from hitting me in the face. Now I'm not so worried about it. I'm actually replacing the whole agitator and I'm waiting for it to arrive.
Good video. Maybe somebody already said this but i didnt read all comments. I removed bolt. Removed agitator. Placed on ground. Use a long extension and tapped agitator adapter out. Alot easier
My problem is the agitator lifts up on its own too easily, usually during a spin cycle causing the agitator to rumble around inside the basket. I have been just pushing it back down but it keeps happening. Is it the agitator or the coupler, or both? It looks like the agitator has been glued onto the bottom of the basket - there is alot of light brownish stuff on the underside of the agitator and on the bottom of the basket.
The agitator and the bolt came off easy but the coupler makes me wish I had a flight of stairs to push the washer down.I've been beating the couple with a hammer for the last hour and it's only moved a centimeter. Ive pryed and pryed it still wont come off. Any suggestions? My coupler doesn't turn like yours did either. I can also see the teeth thru the bolt hole are not worn down. I'm stuck. Thank you.
I have a 1982 GE top loader with (I'm told) a corroded outer tub. It leaks waterfalls. The repairman said to replace it, but I want to have a go at fixing the machine. I'm buying a tub nut wrench on ebay, but what type of spreader tool would be compatible?? THANX in advance.
I'm in the process of changing out the copuler in my washer I've unscrewed the bolt but I can't get the coupler of the motor shaft do you have any suggestions of how to get it off
+Tiffany Martin Soaking it for a while helps. Wiggling it as best you can, while it's soaking will help it penetrate. With anything rusted or degraded, worst case scenario is to cut it out... You're replacing it anyway.
I've got a GE top load washer that quit agitating...I took out the agitator coupler, got a new one, put it in, now I can't get the agitator housing to go completely back in! Help please, what's the problem?
+Robin Payne Make sure it's clean and there's no junk on it. Once you do that, you could use a little dish soap to grease it. That may do the trick. Good luck.
Agitator just stopped on our GE Washer, found this video, one screw..found the $9 Hub at a local appliance store..simple fix and probably saved us $100 service call..
I also have a GE model, after I pull out the agitator. How do I snap it back securely? I put it back by pushing it down, but it jumped out while it was washing again. Would you please give me some suggestion on how to put it back securely? Thank you!
Time for mine to get replaced. The fins have broken off leaving sharp points that are making holes in everything. I'm probably going to look for one with a spiral design instead of the fins.
Video helped, another video made me believe I had to remove a cap to get to bolt or nut and cap wouldn't remove so I when into destruct mode then I found your video. I used an old nylon belt and it came right off, belt fairly narrow and figured I could get a better grip. Are all GE top loader agitators universal or the same??
I have a Whirlpool Supreme 70 old washer, the agitator bearing seems to be dry, makes a squeeling vibration noise if it doesn't turn on the spin cycle. I took the cap off and there is a brass threaded shaft surrounded with steel. I soaked it with WD40 and just can't get it off. Do you know if this is plastic that fits against plastic like the one you do in this video, or is my shaft rusted into the plastic? Anybody know?
Too bad the Video title was not more specific, this is not about replacing an GE Washer Agitator. That's not what's being replaced. He's replacing the GW Washer coupler and NOT the complete agitator.
Two questions: 1. If there's no bolt, what's the point of removing the cap? 2. Isn't that a tiny hole for a set screw down there on the slope of the agitator?
+rossle70 Most washers, other than GE, have a bolt. 2) Don't know what tiny hole you're referring to - if it's near that cap you're talking about, then that is there for drainage. The cap should be positioned below the hole. Good luck.
The little holes are the size of a flat head screw driver and I think they are just for letting the softer out. That is the only thing I could figure out.
I had to use an impact wrench to get the 7/16 bolt off but after a long fight it came loose. I could only find one chunk of one dog they were just shredded. Time to get some dogs.
The agitator in my washing machine seems like it's coming up off the coupler and maybe that's why it's not agitating properly. I believe it's the same washer in this video, so there's nothing bolting the agitator down to the coupler. I tried turning it clockwise and counter-clockwise to see if it would lock into place on the coupler once it's shacked in, but it won't. I removed the coupler and all of the teeth where it bolts in looks good, so I'm lost. :/
You're probably right. One or the other has worn down. If we were doing the repair, we'd replace both the agitator and coupler. The looseness has probably damaged both parts, and although it might work initially, the problem will likely return. Needs to have a very snug fit.
Not sure what's going on. Shaft is fine. Nothing else would make it do up or down. If you're transmission isn't toast, assume your coupler is slipping on the drive shaft, especially if the transmission is free and spinning properly. Good luck!
+Melissa Berry Totally different problem. If you think it's an issue below it, then check the belt. It depends on the model, but generally the transmission wheel spins both directions. If it doesn't, then it could be the transmission - note that a few models can only spin one direction due to clutch engagement... this is beyond the scope of this video.
I think my GE model is older even than the one you illustrated. I pulled off the agitator and was presented with this column for a model WWA7070GALAD. Looks like agitator spline replacement part is AP2044578. Do I need a special wrench to remove something to get the old AP2044578 off? (Part of it, the thick rubber bit with the spline-channels, is stuck way up in the plastic agitator cover - I'm not even sure I can get it out from up there, yet, but no point trying if I don't know how to put a new model on the agitator shaft shown in the picture. i66.tinypic.com/nwmrs3.jpg
I see my agitator moving clockwise as it should as the machine is in wash mode, but I am also able to turn it by hand counterclockwise easily. I can turn it either direction, easily. Hummmmm............

Thank you for doing this. It was a great help and allowed me to fix my own washer without having to call someone.
Thanks for the tip! I was getting nowhere with my hands. Always nice when someone gives advice for less than ideal scenarios.
Thank you for this video. I bought the part from a local appliance repair shop for $16 and replaced it in a few minutes.

Great tip. I messed with mine for 45 minutes with no success till I saw this clip.
Thank you for the straight forward video. Replaced the part in fifteen minutes. It was $15.57. Saved some money. Thank you again
Where did you buy the part
Excellent video. So valuable. The bedsheet hopelessly wrapped inside the agitator, around my spindle, is now free.
Great video, I used a cargo tie down strap which allowed me to keep my hands out of the machine and the extra length help snap it right out with hardly any effort.
Excellent video and instructions. Thanks so much for taking the time to walk thru step-by-step.
Great video. Thanks a million! I watched another video on how to take this washer completely apart but it did not cover the agitator. Grateful.
Thank you so much!! I was able to replace mine by myself for $9. Works like a charm now!!
Brittany Johnson were did you get it
Thanks for the video man. I was able to get my washer fixed a couple weeks ago with no major issues. I appreciate it.
Just got done using a rope got it off just fine thank you very much for your help it's running again
Just wanted to say thank you! With your help I fixed my washer for less than 20 dollars!!
So glad to help!
Thank you. A thin robe belt got caught under the agitator. This saved me a repairman visit.
thank you followed your instructions and now my washer works great!
It was so easy , God Bless you, saved me alot of money,

The same buy I destruct ed before finding his video, lol. It's all good agitator was broke at top anyway.

All I can say is Wow! Awesome video
I can't get the new coupler to go back on...I cleaned the grooves out as best I could...Do I have it lined up wrong? Or should I hammer it on?
Anna Grywalski did u hammer it on???
@@MyBloodyLips I am having the same problem, did you end up finding a solution?
My problem is the agitator lifts up on its own too easily, usually during a spin cycle causing the agitator to rumble around inside the basket. This is my issue too! Did you fix it yet? All mine has is a metal rod sticking up? No plastic piece. Help!
Thanks worked perfect, 10 minutes tops. GE's website said it wasn't fixable and to call a tech.
big thanks to you for your video .. i was able to fix my washer in 5 minutes
I have the same problem how did you remove the dust cover to get to the 7/16 nut
The agitator and the bolt came off easy but the coupler makes me wish I had a flight of stairs to push the washer down.I've been beating the couple with a hammer for the last hour and it's only moved a centimeter. Does that agitator turn in both directions when washing or just goes the same direction during the whole wash cycle?
I have a 1982 GE top loader with (I'm told) a corroded outer tub. It leaks waterfalls. The repairman said to replace it, but I want to have a go at fixing the machine. I'm buying a tub nut wrench on ebay, but what type of spreader tool would be compatible??

Under the agitator the part that you pulled looks ok the brownish cone with holes is broken into pieces..... suggestions?
Thanks! I fixed it myself with your help!
Mercy! So much more brute strength needed than the old Maytags.. How long has GE used the same configuration?
Dhvsgrghg,,?^&^(*&*&^&,,;;::;&,:%^^
Great video!
Thanks a lot !
I was able to fix my washer!
Try it just with your hands before attempting with the rope - it might come off . Mine did.
same here. statched it right off.
Hi I got the bolt off but I can’t get the plastic piece off any tricks to get it off?

Is it the same in a unitized model?
I've got a GE top load washer that quit agitating...I took out the agitator coupler, got a new one, put it in, now I can't get the agitator housing to go completely back in! Help please, what's the problem?
+Robin Payne Make sure it's clean and there's no junk on it. Once you do that, you could use a little dish soap to grease it. That may do the trick. Good luck.
Ok, ty. I cleaned it & got all the built up gunk off. I'll try the dish soap
So when i take off the agitator and the motor still turns by hand, do i need a new motor?
Agitator just stopped on our GE Washer, found this video, one screw..found the $9 Hub at a local appliance store..simple fix and probably saved us $100 service call..
I also have a GE model, after I pull out the agitator. How do I snap it back securely? I put it back by pushing it down, but it jumped out while it was washing again. Would you please give me some suggestion on how to put it back securely? Thank you!
If it doesn't seat well, either the agitator or the coupler is damaged. It should fit firmly and stay in place.
The agitator cap on my machine seems to be soft plastic or rubber. I have NO idea how to get it off!
Time for mine to get replaced. The fins have broken off leaving sharp points that are making holes in everything. I'm probably going to look for one with a spiral design instead of the fins.

Your method worked. Thanks so much!
What is the screw broke in my washer done
Thank buddy really helped me out !
Awesome, worked like a charm!
You don't mention how to get off the glued on cap - mine is like that and I can't pry it off. Any suggestions?
dplavins Keep soaking. Push it up and down to get it wiggling. If it wiggled a bit then the water will help loosen it up. Worst case is to cut it off.
what if a couple of the sprockets that hold the agitator are broke off? can that be fixed?
Bwells2705 no. It will need to be replaced.

No... that squealing won't be coming from there. The agitator is floating and secure. Squealing is coming from something underneath. Good luck!
What is the model number of this GE?
Is that y my washer sounds like it's grinding I thought the tub out of line
Too bad the Video title was not more specific, this is not about replacing an GE Washer Agitator. That's not what's being replaced. He's replacing the GW Washer coupler and NOT the complete agitator.

Two questions:
1. If there's no bolt, what's the point of removing the cap?

My washer won’t drain ? Nor does it drain any ideas?
Theirs 4 holes in top of agitator I put old telephone chord through those holes and around an old shower rod lifted right out
Thanks, just on time

Thank you !

ours too, but thank you for showing!!!
Funny thing is you don't have to take the lid magnet off just set another magnet on there... works perfectly yep a girl figured that out!! LoL
This was really helpful, and I was terrified i was going to end up with a black eye from the agitator. Funny.

Its times like this that i hate being petite
What about the dogs?
GE doesn't use them.
I found that out the hard way. Anyhow it still doesn't aggitate. I had to get a whole different aggitator and cuppler
Just pull a strong magnet off of your fridge and not off of the washer lid
You forgot to put the word coupler in the title

Front load washer whirlpool show me some .
Why the fuck would they make it like this??
And just get a fridge magenet
When you pull that agitator out, just leave the cap on the agitator
