This is a 10/10 segment for me. This is exactly why I wish AEW can turn things around and start getting more people into these shows because the crowd reaction for that heel turn was perfect.
From the minute Mariah May stepped into AEW, everyone was waiting for that specific heel turn moment. We all knew it was coming, and yet the outcome exceeded my expectations. For a company that gets a lot of hate for not being able to tell good stories, this Mariah / Toni feud is proving to be one hell of a story already.
I actually thought it was gonna be the other way around!

A few months ago, someone on Twitter made the connection that Mariah and Toni's storyline was heavily based on an old 1950's movie called "All About Eve" where Eve played the long game and manipulated her mentor Margo into becoming friends and something of a student-mentor bond, before completely taking her spot in Hollywood.
This is so fitting considering the Timeless Character. This is essentially AEW's version of that movie's climax between Mariah (Eve Harrington, the conniver) and Toni (Margo Channing, the mentor).
It plays out like Robert Aldrich directed it too. Just perfect

In that movie, a woman (Bridget Fonda) breaks up with her boyfriend & decides to get a female roommate (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to share her apartment. The roommate ends up becoming obsessed to the point of dressing & styling her hair like Fonda & at one point murders Fonda’s boyfriend by stabbing him in the head with a high heel shoe

selling??????? thats legit ever since she got her former tag team partner into the club it was going downhill fast she was just playing "second rate" to stay under the champs wings this was building up for months and she now has her title + another one incoming. She knows every card the current champ has and could ever play, took damn near all the champs moves and finishers and learnt directly from her to boot.

What sells me on this is the fact that Mariah just smothered her face in Toni's "blood" there's way too much risk of infection or illness from that. Don't think I'm disliking it though honestly adding the fake blood made this segment like. Top tier
I think a lot of us thought Toni was just gonna treat Mariah like dirt just for her to be rightfully betrayed. I never would've imagined Toni loving Mariah and Mariah SNAPPING. Beautiful story
It's extremely well done because she genuinely used old movie concepts to sell a great storyline. You're right. Conventional heel behavior would lead us to believe that Toni Storm would just be a really crappy person and treat Mariah as beneath her. Lucky to be under her wing and should be graced. Instead they subverted that trope with the "mean girl actually finds a friend just to get karma" and it's a solid way to pull off a double turn if they want it. There's no one that wouldn't believe in Toni as a face after how brutally she was beat down. And Mariah can easily be the heel now, I mean look at her cup final photoshoot. She did it with Toni's blood on her still lmao.
Toni worked herself into a shoot. Toni created Mariah, a younger, thinner, hotter version of herself.

Exactly right. Last great heel turn like this that I can remember was when Dean Ambrose turned heel on Seth Rollins the night they won the tag championships after Romen Reigns revealed he was fighting cancer. Same surprise, goosebump feeling. Too bad Vince booked Dean's heel run.

Honestly I have to agree. It feels like an HBK level heel turn. Something that can really if done right establish a new megastar in women's wrestling. But unlike HBK, Mariah actually has a really talented top level talent to go against. Also agreed, wrestling has too many heel turns that are way too slow and it's always the "face makes an evil grin and sets up slow" that gives it away too long. Even Seth Rollins heel turn in 2014 , which is one of the most important in wrestling history in hindsight now, was given away too long in the moment. This was perfect. The story gave Mariah no real reason to actually want to betray Toni Storm other than "I figured you would turn on me first and I want your title" and the way she just smacks the shit out of Toni with the belt immediately made it shocking

There have been two AEW shows in Calgary, and both have been absolute bangers with moments that will go down as in iconic AEW history. Tony definitely respects the contribution that this city has made to the industry.
Two live events anyway, split into 5 tv episodes.
(Collision, Rampage, Battle of the Belts 7 last year.
Last nights Dynamite and this Saturday’s Collision)
I know Tony K. was an ECW fan, but even they never went this far. What an amazing segment. We did find out one thing about Toni. She sure knows how to blade!

It's a great storyline but the best storyline AEW produced since their start is the Punk and MJF fued. That's still their best storyline to this day.

We all knew from the start since Mariah joined Toni, she would turn heel eventually: after the Owen Hart Cup was announced, Mariah was the lock to win it so her and Toni's story can build towards All In. We didn't expect the betrayal to happen immediately after winning the tournament.
Nicely done, AEW. Gives enough time between Mariah and Toni to set up the blood feud for London, maybe even play out the whole All About Eve references for the next couple of weeks.

This was bound to happen when Mariah May and Tony Storm came together and when no one could defeat Tony Storm, it was then that it became clear that only Mariah May could defeat her.
Mariah May is so good. You can tell that a lot of people that are critical or dismissive of her, simply saw her look and didn't bother watching her in the ring.
Love watching her in the ring. I admit I was surprised. I thought she was just eye candy and first, but those doubts were put to rest when I saw her first match. She also is surprisingly strong as you can see she was able to German suplex Willow. Total package.
