    I am skeptical about this. I am an Electrical Engineer and understand what a capacitor will do in the US. Most modern large load/motor devices already have a Start Capacitor that takes up the initial load surge. Unlike motor loads (HVAC, Well Pump, etc.), most electronic devices have such a slight surge that this won't be worth it. IMO, upgrading old non-LED lighting, fixing insulation, updating windows, and putting timers (WIFI/automated) on some items will save you a lot more money.

      Adding capacitors to individual motors helps balance the other loads in a plant that has various inductive loads. This better power in the manufacturing plant with single phase and three phase motors/uses. Does not help your electrical bill. That’s why you don’t see it used voluntarily. If you are a big enough inductive load user the power company might give you a discount for installing capicators so they don’t have to on their side of the meter.

      The electricity provider does not care much about power factor in individual residences. Large subdivisions can warrant a capacitor ("cap") bank. Extremely High Voltage substations often have capacitor banks the size of a large shed on insulator stilts.

    Remember that each device should be power factor corrected with its own capacitor. Because things are switched on and off in a home. Your refrigirator, tv, bulbs, etc. either switch on and off by themselves or you switch them on and off. Connecting just one big cap into your supply, the cap will draw current when you switch off most of your inductive loads and then waste electricity for you, and save for the municipality.

    You are using the same power with improved power factor to calculate current, and then again, you are calculating the power using the calculated current. In this, you will get the same power.
    Energy meter calculates the power consumption of active power. Theorically, the capacitance load will deal with reactive power. Therefore, there will not be any noticeable change in meeter reading. But improving the power factor will help to reduce the current in the line. This is good for the supplier as the voltage drop will be reduced in the supplying line.

    Depends on the area. I use a UPS and it scans the spikes. Got it bc of the ruined Electronics. My power was spiking 200 and was down to 90.. not a steady 120. So I am paying for the 200 but using only 120 . A Capacitor acting as a Reservoir. So I get a steady 120. PROTECTING MY DEVICES .The UPS also is a back up to let my pc shut down in a full blackout. BUT it saves electricity from those 200 spikes thar hit ever 10 seconds and last about 3 seconds. So I am not waistng the surges but saving then for the dims. That hit every 30 seconds and last about 2 seconds and ether surg or dim can ruin equipment. But I noticed my entire electricity bill went down since using the unit and found out it was cleaning the power to a lesser degree for the entire house not just my labtop unlike a regular surg protector that only stops surges not cleans them with Capacitor. It's primarily designed as a backup for laptop. But it's also cleaning my house house of dirty power. So what I am saying is Normally I would be paying for the 180 sudge but only using 120. This Reduces the Problem. My power grids a EXSTREAM example with is why I Got the UPS. But it saves about 15 bollars a month on my eletric bill.

    Does the improved working of the load by improved PF reduce heat and thus either finish having utlized less energy or save through secondary costs such as air conditioning due to less heat generated?

  • @aduedc
    @aduedc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Remember the meter only measures the current (counts current-sec), and assumes value of the PF to be 1 and voltage to be nominal line voltage. So, if you reduce the current your bill will go down. In side a meter there is induction motor in series with your home load, more current it passes through, faster it rotates, and faster it counts.

You clearly explained that connecting a capacitor across the power supply will not reduce the bill but at the same time will increase the life and efficiency of our house hold appliances which can reduce the maintenance cost of our home appliances in the long run which infact save our money. Thanks once again. TH-cam videos are boons nowadays can easily understand any kind of equipment even without basic knowledge also. Little interest only needs to learn about things.

      Are you trying to say our money will be safe if we add the capacitor across to line.

    • @flagmichael
      @flagmichael 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      There is no reason to connect a capacitor across the line. We pay for kilowatts, not kilovars (kilo volt-amps reactive). It will not have any effect on the life of appliances; the one factor that will improve the life of your motor operated appliances (air conditioners in particular) is adequate line voltage. Low voltage heats the motor up more than we might think.
      (Retired after 34 years with a Fortune 100 electric utility.)

  • @justsaying4786
    @justsaying4786 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Seems to me two important qualifications apply here. Firstly the power factor (PF) correction varies depending on the reactive load and that changes as motors, LED lighting and other loads are switched on and off. So the idea that the PF can be corrected by application of a single capacitor is only valid for a given load situation. Putting that aside the other unstated assumption here is that your being billed for the real power component which might be true for domestic households. Large Industrlal users are likely to be charged on total power usage (i.e. apparent power) as a way of discouraging use of high power inducticve loads (i.e. 3 phase motors etc) that do not incorporate some form of PF correction on the equipment.

    • @davebutler3905
      @davebutler3905 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You get the picture... PF causes wasted power, so domestic meters charge you for the power you waste. That's why industrial consumers face penalties.

    • @justsaying4786
      @justsaying4786 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Should have mentioned there is also a third unstated qualification - all reactive voltages and currents are sinusoidal. This may not always be the case. Some loads (linear power supplies in electrical and electronic equipment, for example ) give rise to current draw with high harmonic content which also contributes to poor PF. A ' capacitor' solution, in this case will only correct the phase relationship between the AC voltage and current and not the harmonic distortion. This is all very case dependent, but serves to highlight again the practical difficulty and limitations of using a single capacitor to correct the PF.

    • @flagmichael
      @flagmichael 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@davebutler3905 Not at all. Consumer level power factor is aggregated and dealt with at the distribution level. The provider that owns the distribution level lines installs remotely operated cap banks to correct voltage levels, usually from day to night.
      Domestic meters measure Watt hours, not amp hours or VARS. That may be true outside North America or outside Europe or Australia, but I would be surprised.

      The old mechanical kWh meters with a spinning disc only measured real power and could not measure apparent power.
      However with the introduction of smart meters in some countries, they do have the capability to measure apparent power, and even in a residential setting. In the UK they haven't activated that capability yet.
      Apparent power is rarely measured in residential properties, and most often only done in commercial/industrial properties.
      One typical approach is to set a threshold for the power factor and make a charge to the industrial/commercial customer when the power factor goes below the threshold.
      This generally tends to act as an incentive to the industrial customer to adopt power factor correction techniques and devices.
      Too many customers with too low a power factor imposes demands on the infrastructure which the power company (or distribution network operator) incurs costs to provide.
      So to prevent them having to upgrade the network at huge cost, they discourage low power factors.

    Thats why in industries, we always try to maintain unity PF.
    If u maintain unity PF, the stress on cables will reduced

    I got to test one of these Capacitor Banks. What the person that loaned me the device didn’t know, was what instruments I had. Assumed just a DM and Amp Clamp. Installed new Double Pole 15 Amp Breaker in Panel wired in Device. With the Breaker off Ran Major Appliances except Clothes Washer, for twenty minutes and took Watt readings. Also Dryer was run on a high heat, non-Auto dry setting. Freezer, Refrigerator and AC Ran at a slightly lower wattage, with the unit connected. Also a large belt driven floor fan Ran at a lower wattage. When I set the Clothes washer so it was heating it’s water it ran at a higher wattage. Next was the Water Heater, our biggest energy hog. It ran at a higher wattage with the Capacitor Bank Connected. Stove/Oven, Dryer Light Bulbs were all higher. Any Inductive load ran higher wattages. This would have resulted in higher electricity bills in my opinion. BTW Fluorescent Lights quieted down, and my immersible aquarium pumps lost there hum, and ran at a lower wattage. My old O Scope showed a smoother Hz Wave.

    I am curious in which countries electric power distributors charging penalties at home supply for bad "power-factor"?
    Home power supply is measured and charged in kWh (active power only). No capacitor will ever change any home bill.
    Industrial facilities are normally charged in kWh (activepower) and kVArh (reactive power) as penalties as you said. Industrial facilities usually generates a huge amount of reactive power which floats from factory over power lines into generatorsand and vice versa. That energy doesn't any useful work, except it overloads powerlines and transformers as well generators. That is why distributors wish to make that circulated power to minimal values.
    Industrial consumers are stimulated to invest in automatic system which controls power factor all the time automatically switching on or off groups of capacitors.
    Personally I did at least six such systems which are working over 20 years now. Penalty parts on bills are completely kicked out. It is not just trivial calculation. Not really set of instructions by youtube.

    What this video said is true. It all depends on how the utility company charge: Real power consumption or supply power.
    In residential, its usually charge on real power consumption, that's why installing any PF improving capacitor device will not help save your bill but only for utility company.
    Which is why i never install any PF improving devices for my home, and discourage non commercial buildings like schools to install such devices as they also consume extra power.
    But an improved PF does help prolong the lifespan of your supply lines and some devices as less current is required to do the same jobs thus less deterioration rate. It also help old induction motors without PF corrector to run more efficiently.
    Its usually in commercial and industrial area that utility company imposes a penalty for poor PF to force them improve their PF efficiency, esp for those consuming large power using inductor motors.
    I was assigned a project to improve PF for a hotel during my university industrial attachment, learning from utility supplying professional engineer. It did cut the large utility bill significantly after improving the PF.

      In every civilized country I know of, electricity is sold by the kWh. It is the responsibility of the provider to deal with power factor. Most of that is done at the distribution level, with some at the transmission (the power lines we see a mile away) level. Generally, distribution and transmission level cap banks are remotely controlled based on the line voltage.

  • @flyer617

    Whether or not this works depends on the type of meter and the power factor before and after you add the capacitor.
    I had a friend install a bank of 3 phase capacitors at his plant because he was being billed for poor power factor due to a large number of motors making it very inductive. Some quick calcs and his electrician installed the capacitor cabinet and it saved a lot of money each month as the new power factor was close enough to one to eliminate the additional charge.
    I doubt a capacitor will do much in most residential settings and it adds a component which if not installed properly and with the correct fuse could start a fire, so I wouldn't recommend it. Be careful.

    Unlike the battery, a capacitor is a circuit component that temporarily stores electrical energy through distributing charged particles on (generally two) plates to create a potential difference. A capacitor can take a shorter time than a battery to charge up and it can release all the energy very quickly.

    Capacitors marketed as power-saving devices for reducing electricity bills are often considered fake or misleading. These devices claim to improve power factor and reduce energy consumption, but their effectiveness is questionable. Power factor correction is typically the responsibility of utility companies, and residential consumers rarely benefit from such devices. It's essential to be cautious when considering these products, as they might not provide the energy savings they promise and could be a waste of money. It's best to focus on proven energy-saving practices like using energy-efficient appliances and reducing unnecessary energy consumption.

    Making a change to the output of thye meter will not affect the billing rate of the input to the meter, its a waste of time to consider the public could benefit by adding a capacitor to their output side of the power meter even if part of the home or business were to be rented, the same power billo still results. Surges in power is not a good thing esp for Internet electronic equipment which would be crowded with a noisy line decreasing quality of service.

    Hi when we use motors, like fans, grinders and AC etc.. when we switch on sudden change in voltage drop is happens, to arrest that we need capacitors after switch individually. its also regulate power factor. this method controls sudden voltage drops and increase motor life. Most of the industries people use this method. but remember we have to connect before motor, parallelly to be connected. Otherwise it draws some power and bill will be increased

    Three things to consider here. 1. this video assumes an "ideal" capacitor. Real world capacitors have leakage current, however small,, that will increase overall consumption. Even if by a tiny amount.
    2. I used to add small capacitors to Edison bulbs whenever that socket had a history of blowing bulbs. Wherever the spike happens to come from, a capacitor will help prevent it from burning out the bulb. It may even work on modern LED lights, though they are naturally more resistant to voltage spikes. This saved me a lot of money in replacement light bulbs over the years.
    3. capacitors fail over time and use. They can short out and cause a fire. Never bypass a fuse or circuit breaker with a capacitor. And never place one in a location where its failure might ignite nearby material.

    It's not the p.f aspect. The harmonics and transients contribute to parasitic current consumption. Capacitors partly reduce harmonics and transients, so the loads produce less harmonic currents. Some digital meters are not calibrated for harmonics and may excessively render kWH. Besides cost-saving: 1) equipment will last longer. 2) better health due to reduced harmonic electric and magnetic fields. For these benefits, the capacitors are installed just before the fuse box.

  • @PK-nv4on
    @PK-nv4on ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Your video is ok while the billing is done on active power called kwh. But, now the EB s are billing on reactive power which is called kvah which is more than kwh , when we use inductive loads, ie motors, fans, ACs etc... So in Telugu states, better install suitable capacitors to improve the power factor nearer to 1, so that the bills are reduced. As of now, there is no low power factor charges seperately.

    Well theoretically, if we are using superconductors, there won't be any power/energy losses, thus it won't work as designed.
    However due to imperfection of copper, it suffers from energy losses(in form of heat) as current flows through it. The higher the current, the more it heats up.
    Therefore, if that capa-fruckin-citor could keep my electrical wiring temperature low, then those unnecesary units will be ommited from my monthly bill.
